Georgia's 4-H'ers Christmas Tradition

Vet School Has Number One Again Choose A Georgia Tree

Opportunities
In June of 1975, 69 men and women completed four years of professional
education' and were graduated from The University of Georgia's College of veterinary Medicine. They joined approximately 600 veterinarians in Georgia and 30,000 veterinarians working in the United States.
These veterinarians are engaged in a variety of professional acti-
vities. More (72 percent) are in general practice, specializing in large animal medicine, small animal medicine, or both. Some are in military service or engaged in local, state or federal activities related to animal and human health. Others, about 90 in Georgia, are teaching in colleges or

universities where they are helping to train future veterinarians.
Research in government or in private industry provides rewarding activity for many. Some veterinarians specialize in the care of laboratory and zoo animals.
There is an apparent need for ad.ditional veterinarians in Georgia. A recent study indicated 44 Georgia counties had no resident veterinarian. It has been estimated that approximately twice as many veterinarians will be needed in the United States by the year 2000.
Many young people have chosen
veterinary medicine as a career. Last year 231 Georgians applied for the 39 positions available to Georgia residents in the entering class of 86 students at The University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine.
The other 47 positions are distributed to the states of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina by contracts with the Southern Regional Education Board. There were 365 applicants for these 47 positions in 1975.
Any young person who chooses veterinary medicine as a career should strive for academic excellence. Association, preferably by work experience, with veterinarians

You can be one of the lucky 15 percent with a Georgia grown tree this year. A list of growers who allow people to choose and cut their own tree has been compiled by the Georgia Forestry Commission in cooperation with the Georgia Christmas Tree Growers Association. The choose and cut method provides an opportunity for the freshest possible tree in the home plus a family outing that could become a tradition.

Care of Tree
After you have contacted the grower, cut your tree and returned home, there are a few precautions that should be taken. The tree should be placed in a container that holds water in the coolest room in your home away from fireplaces, radiator, television sets, and curtains. Also, keep the tree away from entrances. Check the water level at least once a day.

our national award-winning FFA chapter. The picture published in your November 26 issue, however, was captioned "Jackson County". The chapter is from Jackson High School, in Jackson, Georgia, county seat of Butts County.
Jackson County, incidentally, just beat Butts County out of a state Beautification through Conservation award with some fine work and a fine presentation. We certainly don't want them getting credit for our FFA chapter!

PECAN STACK CAKE

1 box cake mix (your favorite) Mix and bake as directed. Pour batter into four 8" cake pans.

ICING

1 cup milk

3 This, flour

1 cup sugar

1 cup margarine

1 tsp. vanilla

3 cups ground pecans

Over low heat, cook milk and flour until it thickens.

Blend sugar and margarine together. Add thickened milk

to the sugar mixture and beat until it looks like whipped

cream. Add vanilla and ground pecans and mix well.

Spread icing between layers and on the sides and top of

cake.

The southern lady fern is one of the most abundant ferns in Georgia. It is less tempermental than other ferns and will grow practically everywhere except in the low sandy southeastern part of the state.
Several varieties of lady ferns are documented under the Athyrium genus, but the most common is the A. filix-femina or lady fern. There is a "northern lady" but she has not been seen in Georgia.
The average lady fern is about six to seven inches tall with finely cut blades. The bottom one or two pairs of pinnae are usually shorter than the upper ones. The yellow-green foliage is different from the rich green color of other ferns but it makes it easier to identify in the wilds.
Glade Few?
The glade fern is included in the Athyrium genus with the lady fern. Like the lady, this fern tapers on both ends but the pinnae are smooth and rarely toothed.
A. pycnocarpum has been found only in the northwestern part of Georgia and most abundantly in Walker County. It likes shaded ravines and grows best in calcareous (chalky, limestone) soils.

Receive Awards
Four Georgia county agents were given Distinguished Service Awards at the national meeting of the Association of Extension 4-H agents held recently in Louisville, Ky. The four were cited for their work with Georgia's youth.
They were: Ms. Pat Bell, Jackson county; Mrs. Jean Jones, DeKalb county; John Walker Robertson, Clarke county; and Ms. Doris Thomas, Jefferson county.

The Georgia Peanut Recipe Contest will be held on February 24, 1976, and is sponsored by the Georgia Peanut Commission in conjunction with Peanut Progress Day activities on the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College campus in Tifton.
Over $1800 in prizes will be awarded to those entering the contest to be held in the Home Economics Department on the ABAC campus.

Economics departments, County Farm Bureau Offices and the Georgia Peanut Commission, P. O. Box 967, Tifton 31794.
Completed application forms and a copy of the recipe being entered must be received by the Peanut Commission no later than February 6, 1976, and become the property of the Peanut Commission.

Minimum requirements for admission to our College of Veterinary Medicine include accumulation of at least 90 quarter or 60 semester hours (two years) of college credit. Fifty-five quarter hours must be taken in English, physics, biology, inorganic and organic chemistry and these credits must have been completed within eight years from the date of application. An overall gradepoint average of 2.7 (4.0 scale) or better is required.

This is the top award of the Ag Alumni Association with only one presented each year, the first having gone to Senator Richard B. Russell in 1963. Davison was cited for his outstanding service to agriculture.
