Supporting
Ag's Future
The future of this state, this nation and in fact this world is dependent upon agricultural production more than any other one factor.
It therefore follows that this future is going to be in the
i hands of our young people tomorrow and their ! children in the I tomorrows to co! me. When we sup[port the trainj ing grounds for [agricultural leaders. It is an assessment of our belief in the future of our state and country. To a great extent this future, its growth, its successes and failures depend largely on our agricultural colleges and universities. How often do you have the opportunity to do something that you know will last forever? This is the

opportunity afforded through membership and support in Georgia's agricultural alumni associations, to everyone in any phase of agriculture or agribusiness, and to all who recognize the essential role of agriculture to the present and the future of our state, nation and the world.
Of course, all graduates of any agricultural college or university should support their alumni associations. However, many do not realize that this support can and indeed must come from other areas as well if these training grounds are to flourish sufficiently to meet the demands of feeding and clothing tomorrows' world.
ETERNA CLUB
The University of Georgia College of Agriculture Alumni Association offers a unique opportunity in this respect. It is the Eterna Club in which membership is based on a single tax deductible contribution of $100, providing a

Home Vegetable Gardens

Require Planning, Work

Home vegetable gardens have increased drastically in Georgia during the past

year. Many Georgians had their first garden during 1974, some with great

results, others with disappointment, barely reaping enough harvest to pay for the

cost of their garden.

One of the primary reasons for

failure was the novice gardener often

bought or ordered packages of seed

that were produced in areas unsuited

to Georgia's soils and climate.

The Georgia Department of

Agriculture cautions home gar*

deners to purchase seed carefully

and make sure that they are adap-

ted to your area's growing con-

ditions.

Planning, planting and harvesting

your first vegetable garden can be a

rewarding and profitable experience.

However, remember that very few

things that are worthwhile come easy.

So study the recommendations below

and contact your county agent or the

Department of Agriculture if you en-

Budworm Research

counter problems.

Aid For Tobacco
Tobacco budworms are resistant to most commonly used pesticides. Losses to this pest are estimated to be well over $100 million each year.
Scientists have isolated and identified the sex attractant of the budworm and have used identical synthetic chemicals to catch male types.
Quite possibly, broad-area application of the attractant will lead to suppression of entire populations.
However, the chemical treatment is in early stages of research and if found significantly effective, it may still be sometime before it is perfected and made available.

LOCATION
All vegetables grow best in full sun. Select a site where maximum
sunlight is available throughout the day. Avoid areas which are shaded by
buildings and trees. Most all trees and shrubs have extensive root
systems which compete for nutrients and water. Try to locate the garden at least 75 feet from large trees.
Locate the garden as near the house as possible. This will permit frequent visits to the area and allow closer observation to detect insect and disease problems that can develop. .Well-tended and attractive
gardens near the house can be a joy to you and your family throughout the season.

Bull Sale Benefits
Childrens' Home
The Georgia Baptist Children's Home in Baxley has planned its first Charolais bull sale on February 28, 1 P.M. The sale will be held at the new livestock pavillion on the farm, located 10 miles south of Baxley on Ga. Hwy. 15. For information contact A. D. Garner, Farm Manager, Ga. Baptist .Childrens Home. Ph. 912-367-2241.
What's Stuck?
- Plastic wrap stuck to the fry pan or toaster? Remove it with nail polish remover.
-- Glue from price tags or adhesive tape sticking? Remove with lighter fluid.
-- Price marked with indelible ink or other black ink? Remove it with rubbing alcohol.

PLANT IT CAREFULLY Plans made in advance of planting will insure that your labors will be used in growing vegetables your family likes and enjoys. Plan to plant more of those vegetables that will be canned or frozen. These might include beans, sweet corn, peas, broccoli, turnip greens, etc. Don't waste time and space growing vegetables which none of the family eat but do try a few new vegetables each year on a small scale to see how the family accepts them.
SOIL PREPARATION Successful gardens start with good soil preparation. No plant can do its best in soil that is not properly prepared. Turn the soil over completely by plowing or spading. Be sure to bury any plant debris as deep as possible. Manage soil to eliminate

Dear Editor:

We are planning an exhibit of folk pottery by the Meaders

family and other White County potters for next year at

Georgia State University. If your readers, in checking their

attics and smokehouses, find they have any old jugs,

churns, crocks or pitchers they think were made in lower

White County .(Mossy Creek district), and would like to have

them considered for the exhibit, we'd like to hear from them.

This ware often has a green or brown runny glaze. In ad-

dition, we would be interested in any other Georgia pottery

they might care to donate or sell for our Museum of Georgia

Folk Culture; we are especially interested in older signed,

dated or unusual pieces. Thanks.

Described as one of the four fine herbs of French cuisine*, tarragon is characterized by the moderately strong anise-like flavor its leaves impart to eggs, fowl, beans, cabbage and tomato dishes.
The French word tarragon means "little dragon", a classic way of saying that tarragon should be used with discretion. Tarragon is described as one of the most appealing and tantalizing herbs known.
Tarragon is a woody perennial, spreading by creeping rhizomes. The shiny dark green leaves are slender, pointed at the ends and very aromatic. The plant will do best in full or partial sun and in well drained, good garden soil.
True French tarragon will not produce seeds and must be propagated from cuttings or divisions. Root cuttings can be made every 3 or 4 years.
Medicinally, tarragon has been accredited with sweetening the breath and if taken before drinking medicine would dull the taste.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Liquid, Solid, Fertilizers

Compared For Corn Usage

The current fertilizer shortage and high fertilizer prices have influenced some Georgia farmers to use questionable fertilizer practices in crop production. For instance, certain fertilizer concerns are promoting the use of liquid fertilizer at
the rate of 6 gallons per acre? They sometimes rationalize this comparatively low fertilization rate by stating that one gallon of this material is equivalent to one hundred pounds of a solid fertilizer. They are careful to recommend ad..-
ditional nitrogen and lime if needed.

clods and leave a smooth surface to plant on.
Organic matter, such as compost, will increase fertility and aid in holding moisture in the soil. Any material added to the garden soil should be thoroughly mixed with the soil.

A gallon of a liquid 9-18-9 fertilizer weighs approximately 10 Ibs. Therefore, if a farmer applied 6 gallons of a liquid 9-18-9 fertilizer per acre, he would be applying approximately 5.4 Ibs. of N, 10.8 Ibs.
of P2Q5 , and 5.4 Ibs. of K'O per acre. If he applies 600 Ibs. of a 9-189 solid (or liquid) fertilizer per acre, he would be applying 54 Ibs. of N,
108 Ibs. of P2Q5 , and 54 Ibs. of K^O per acre.
Farmers following this program may produce crop yields comparable

FERTILIZER
Commercial fertilizers are sold by grade, such as 6-12-12 or 10-10-10. These numbers refer to the percent nitrogen, phosphorous and potash, respectfully. In 100 pounds of 1010-10 there are 10 pounds of nitrogen (N), 10 pounds of available phosphorous (P^O5 ) and 10 pounds of soluble potash (K20).
In your garden use a 10-10-10 or 6-12-12 grade rather than trying to use a specific grade for each vegetable. You will need to supply additional nitrogen to vegetables as they grow. This is best accomplished by applying ammonium nitrate or nitrate of potash after the plants are growing. One cup of ammonium nitrate or two cups of nitrate of potash per 100 feet of row is adequate for side dressing. Place these materials at least three inches from the plant. Avoid getting these materials on the foliage fo prevent burning the leaves. It is best to apply these while the foliage is dry.
PLANT ON TIME Schedule planting to get seeds in the soil on time. Plan to get English peas, turnips, lettuce, collards and cabbage in early, even before frost danger is over. Wait until the soil warms up and the danger of frost is over before seeding warm season crops, such as tomatoes, beans, pepper, egg plant and okra._______

to farmers following our soil test fertilizer recommendations for the first crop year. The reason for this is that most farm fields in Georgia are in a high state of fertility due to previous high fertilization practices. Consequently, farmers following this program would be utilizing the soil
accumulation of P and K and most
likely his crop yields would not decrease for the first one or two years. Eventually, however, his crop
yields will begin to decrease as the residual soil levels of P and K are exhausted.
A fertilizer company using the above mentioned merchandising technique requested that we initiate research comparing their product at their recommended rates with our soil test fertilizer recommendations using a solid fertilizer.
Dr. Milton Walker initiated such
research at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station in 1972. He compared their suggested fertilization rate using their liquid fertilizer with the same amount of P and K based on soil analysis results. The crop grown was corn. Additional N was
applied to all plots to bring the total amount of N applied to 150 Ibs. per acre. All plots also received one ton of dolomitic lime per acre in 1972.
The soil type was Norfolk Sandy Loam and soil test results prior to initiating the experiment were: pH 5.3, P - 92 Ibs. (high) per acre, and K - 56 Ibs. (low) per acre.

L3 - Liquid fertilizer cost based on price of $3.50 per gallon and solid fertilizer on price of $157.00

L4 - P and K applied according to soil analysis resuhs.

As shown in the table, applying 6 gallons of a 9-18-9 fertilizer per acre to corn resulted in an average of 8 bushels per acre less corn produced than when soil test fertilizer recommendations for P and K were followed. Deducting the cost of the fertilizer used, the 6 gallon per acre liquid fertilizer plots realized ap-
proximately $22 per acre less income than where soil test fertilizer recom-
mendations were followed. These research results also show
that applying the same amount of P and K in a solid fertilizer as in 6 gallons of liquid fertilizer per acre rate resulted in approximately the

same average per acre corn yields. This indicates that there is nothing
magic in the plant nutrients contained in the liquid fertilizer. In other words, if a farmer desired to follow this program, he could do it much less expensively by using a solid fertilizer or a liquid fertilizer comparable in price to the solid fertilizer.
This information does not reflect on the merchandising policies of local liquid and suspension fertilizer dealers, who generally attempt to follow our Extension fertilizer recommendations. P. J. Bergeaux, Extension Agronomist.

one-half the amount in the recipe. For one cup sugar, use one-half cup honey and one-half cup sugar. Decrease liquid by three and onehalf tablespoons and add one-fourth teaspoon baking soda to counteract acids in honey. One cup corn syrup equals one-half cup sugar in sweetening power. If recipe calls for one cup sugar, use one cup corn syrup and one-half cup sugar. Reduce liquid in the recipe by three to four tablespoons. 3. Make use of the "hidden" sugar in the syrup of canned peaches and fruit cocktail. Boil the syrup down and use as a sweetener for hot and cold cereals, beverages, fresh fruit, pound cake and any other foods that need sweetening.
HARVESTING Harvest vegetables at proper stage of maturity. Quality begins to decline rapidly in maturing vegetables.
