Charolais Cattle
Create Change
Charolais cattle have revolutionized the U.S. beef industry. During the past twenty years they have created more change and provided more genetic potential than has occurred in the past century. This breed has also established a challenge for the remainder of the industry, which has resulted in far more efficient beef production practice.
Charolais have everything the industry needs...growth, efficiency,
acceptability at the market place, quality lean beef, practical usefulness...all those things that can put the industry back on track.
There's little doubt among experienced cowmen that Charolais is the nation's most copied breed. There are reams of research data, show ring leadership, performance data, and downto-earth commercial cow herd experience to hold the breed high.
For example, there's the compilation of bull test station results

ville 31044.)_________________
over several years that show Charolais bulls converted 7.4 pounds feed into a pound of beef 'way below feed requirements for other purebred bulls. Tests at the feedlot level showed Charolais steers required 8% less feed per pound of gain than other mixed breeds.
The Charolais cow is coming into her own as a mother cow in ranching operations, based on seven years of breeding records in the Canadian Conception to Consumer program. Out of some 5,900 calvings from 180 bulls, the results showed the steer progeny out of Charolais cross cows were easier calving, had heavier weaning weights, produced yearlings with heavier weights, and steer carcasses had less fat and larger rib eyes. Most important, the progeny of Charolais dams produced more lean primal cuts of beef per day of age than the average of all cows. The cowman is becoming more aware of the traits, all of which are

700 Receive EPA
Training
Over 700 commercial pesticide applicators have received training since September 30, 1975 in preparation for an exam given by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The training program was conducted by the Cooperative Extension Service.
Passing the exam will certify these applicators to use certain restricted use pesticides (those that can be toxic to man or the environment when misused). No commercial pesticide applicator will be able to purchase or use restricted pesticides after October 21, 1976 without being certified according to current Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
Dr. Burton R. Evans, Special Entomologist-Pesticide Applicator Training, reported that almost all applicators are passing the exams after taking the training.
About 1,500 applicators have registered for training courses yet to be given at Decatur, Athens, Tifton and Statesboro. Pre and posttesting is being used plus written comments from trainees to better evaluate the training.
If you need information on the training program, call the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Ron Conly, 404/656-4958.

Corn - America's Staple
Georgia's Money Maker
Over 70,000 Uses For This Grass
Corn, (Zea mays), an annual cereal grass, is one of Georgia's most im-
portant grain crops. Not only does it bring approximately $364 million dollars annually to our farm economy, but about one third of all the items in your local grocery have some form of corn in them.
Sweet Potato Festival
The Fifteenth Annual Georgia Sweet Potato Festival will be held November 15 in Ocilla.
The Festival will feature Georgia's largest agricultural parade, beauty contests, cooking contests, farm implement displays, and a tractor pull.
For information, contact the Irwin County Chamber of Commerce, Ocilla 31774.
State 4-H Winner
WSB radio's "Young American of the Year" award was presented to Dave Lee of College Park recently. Special note was taken of Dave's interest in, and dedication to, people-related programs.
Dave organized a 4-H club at Christian City Home for Children and was a national 4-H leadership winner in 1974.
Teosinte, corn's nearest relative, is a perennial tall grass from Mexico
and has two rows of seed on a single cob covered by shucks. Some researchers believe that primitive man produced today's corn by selecting and planting mutations of teosinte which had increasingly larger numbers of seed rows on a single cob.
From these humble beginnings corn has increased in its importance as a food for man and feed Original Teosinte for his livestock. Actual Size The total value of

Dear Editor: Perhaps some of your close to nature readers
know why and/or if it is an omen weather-wise what
I am about to relate. I have observed the habits of yellow jackets and
been stung often by them during some fifty years of my life. I am now 76. Invariably until this fall I have
always found that yellow jackets nest in the open
and in the ground. However, this fall the only two nests I have found
were inside dry well ventilated buildings. One was inside my tool house. The other inside my feed
room at the barn. I interpret this to mean we are in for a severe winter.
Perhaps some of your readers have made similar observations and can tell us if it has any significant
meaning? James E. Sanders Box 207
Route 8, Burnt Mill Road
Chattanooga, Tennessee 37409
(Editor's note: We checked with our Entomology Department and their only comment was that there are a number of species of yellow jackets, some of which nest in buildings more than others. We are very interested in what some of our "sign readers" might have to say about this phenomenon and hope to publish some of the response in this column.)

What 9ft Few?
There are 80 different varieties of ferns in Georgia, but few are as widely distributed as bracken fern. From Walker to Glynn, from Seminole to Rabun, there are few counties this fern has skipped in spreading itself throughout Georgia.
Bracken fern is easy to identify and certainly one that farmers in particular should be familiar with since this fern is poisonous to cattle, horses and chickens. Hogs are not affected.
The bracken fern is tall ranging in size from 16 to 28 inches. The fronds are coarse with a leathery texture. When dry they make a delicate addition to a fall dried arrangement.
U'bf 9 ftetioiteciiiut Few?
Another fern of wide distribution in Georgia is the resurrection fern, so named because its fronds curl up and appear dead in dry weather but are immediately revived by rain.
This is a small fern sometimes no more than an inch long. The leaves are evergreen and smooth on top but scaly and silvery-brown on the bottom.
The resurrection fern is sometimes thought to be a parasite on trees but this is a misconception. It is able to produce its own food like all other green plants. It is most resistant to drying out, however, and can survive in places that other plants could not exist.

corn has increased steadily over the years. In 1974, it was Georgia's largest income crop, even surpassing peanuts.
Every Part Used
Corn is an important crop because of the high energy conversion rations, yields and the fact that every part of the plant can be used. The leaves can be used as fodder, the ears can be cooked and eaten, used for animal feed or taken to the local mill. Or, they can be sold to a commercial operation for many other uses.
Important To Consumer
Corn is not only important to the farmers of this state but also to the consumers. No other grain crop plays such an important role in day to day living. Corn and corn derived products are found in nearly onethird of all items in your local grocery store. The corn wet milling industry provides the most commonly used products: corn syrups (glucose syrups], corn starch, corn oil, corn syrup solids, dextrose, maltodextrins, corn dextrin, caramel coloring, lactic acid and sorbitol. And, these are just the very basic products. There are about 10,000 other uses of derivatives of the basic corn syrup and starch products.
When shopping, nearly one-third of the products in your basket contain corn milled products. If you don't count the foods which come straight from the farm such as fresh vegetables and meats, the number increases. And if you add the dry milled corn products such as flour and meal, fifty percent of everything in your cart contains some corn derived product.
Dextrose is often used in pork sausage to help keep the spices evenly distributed. Corn sweetners are used in bread and corn syrup in the jelly you eat. The peanut butter sandwich and soup lunch contain corn. Dextrose helps the peanut butter spread easier and the soup's thickness comes from corn starch.
Frozen, Canned Foods
In the frozen food section, it's hard to find a label without corn oil, corn starch or dextrose listed. As for desserts, nearly all have some corn in them, be it starch, syrup or dextrose.
Canned foods, peaches, tomatoes, or pickled beets, all rely on a little help from corn. Of course, there are the corn cereals as well as the newer breakfast foods which use corn. Cheese spreads, cottage cheese, baby foods, pet foods, jams, jellies, preserves and a wide variety of sauces from catsup to soy sauce depend on corn.
Besides playing an important role in the grocery store, corn is used in textiles, paper, cast metals even the ink used to stamp prices on food.

highly heritable. Although temporarily held up by
actions of a group of small packers, recent proposed changes in the USDA beef grading system are adding further importance to Charolais in commercial ranching programs. With the new official emphasis upon cutability... these changes require that carcass beef that is quality graded also be given a cutability grade .... the picture throughout industry is expected to increase the realization of the need for a Charolais bull in every pasture.
Charolais breeders have a strong sire evaluation program that compares their herd sires with reference bulls to provide an authentic measurement of the real worth of those sires. Many Charolais are enrolled in the Herd Improvement Program of the American-International Charolais Association. It is a simple but complete system for within herd performance record keeping.
Charolais have made their niche in the beef industry with its fast growth rates, improved feeding efficiency, and quality of the leanbeef
produced by its carcasses. It is these factors that will keep the breed moving forward and in the leadership circle.

Corn Husk Dolls Easy To Assemble
Put a quarter of a cup of liquid bleach in large mixing bowl fuu of water. Add husks, making sure they are completely covered. Usually 1/2 hour is enough time. Check frequently to see if spots are disappearing. Rinse them in clear water before proceeding.
Soak husks in warm water for a few minutes.
Lay six large husks on top of each other, then tie husks together about one inch from tops to form a neck (Illus. 1). Round off tops (Illus. 2) and push in ends to shape head (Illus. 3).
Make arms by either rolling 2 long husks together or braiding 3 strands together. Insert between husks under the head (Illus. 4). Tie arms in place with criss-cross over chest and back (Illus 5). To form shoulders, fold 2 more husks about one inch wide. Place over each shoulder in a criss-cross fashion. Tie at waist (Illus. 6).
A skirt is made of long wide husks tied above the waist. (Illus. 7). Fold a husk to form a wide band and tie around top of skirt (Illus. 8). If doll is a male, just separate the skirt to form two legs and wind a husk around each leg, then bend ends to form feet.
Cut and bend arms, then tie loosely in position until dry. Also, tie skirt in place so that it will hold it's shape.
