USDA-EPA Restore
Fire Ant Program
Last spring I wrote a column in this space expressing shock and disappointment that Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz had announced that U.S.D.A. was discontinuing federal participation in the fire ant control program.
Today, I am extremely happy that the U.S.D.A. and the E.P.A. (Environ-
mental Protection | Agency) have finally gotten their heads togetI her and announcI ed last week that ! federal funds will be restored immediately for this | much needed program in Georgia and other southeastern states.
Since the announcement last spring, I have been working diligently with members of our Congressional delegation in Washington to have these funds restored. I think their interests in helping us have these funds restored was beneficial. In addition, this department has worked with officials of the E.P .A. and U.S.D.A., not only in an effort to have the fire ant eradication program re-instated, but to come up with alternate programs if necessary. We knew we could not leave our farmers and ranchers in the lurch on this serious pest that costs them inestimable loss in time and money each year. In addition, our homeowners, schools, cemeteries, recreation areas, highway and railroad right-of-ways have been plagued by this imported pest.
One of the best aspects that came out of the U.S.D.A. - E.P .A. agreement announcement last week, was the possible development of a new type of fire ant bait and poison that will be less toxic to the environment and therefore allow more frequent applications of Mirex to ant invested areas. This is necessary if we are ever going to do more than just "control" the fire ant problem. The new bait, still using Mirex, but known as Mirex 10-5 instead of Mirex 4X, is believed to be as effective in killing ants but about 75 percent less toxic in the environment.
This is due to the fact that Soybean oil and Mirex oil have been used in the past to soak the

Dear Editor We are looking for turkey feathers, preferably
black & white but not solid white. These feathers are for a school activity.

Dear Editor: I want to tell you how much we enjoy the
MARKET BULLETIN. I had a very successful garden this year in my backyard. You do not have to have a large space to supply your family and friends with vegetables.
You can have a fall garden as well as a summer or spring garden. Cold weather doesn't stop gardening. You can also have an abundant supply of vegetables in the winter months. Different types of greens can be grown in the coldest months.
If everyone that is able and has the proper space to have a garden will plant one you will see a difference in the price of groceries. You will not only be having fresh vegetables but will also be getting the proper exercise that is important for all of us.
It will require about 30 minutes or an hour a day so if you are interested in cutting your grocery bill or getting plenty of exercise try your luck at gardening.

Sweet
Among the many wonders of the new world was the sweet potato, a native American vegetable unknown to our European forefathers.
Long before the first European boat landed in our hemisphere, the inhabitants of Mexico, Central America and most Caribbean Islands were cultivating sweet potatoes as a dietary staple.
Sacks of these potatoes were bought and traded by early swashbucklers. From these merchant and pirate ships, sweet potatoes made their way to Virginia, helping stave off starvation during those early settlement days.
Sweet potatoes quickly became a profitable crop in the southern states. Besides being relatively easy to grow, their nutritive value, versatility and good taste made them a popular vegetable in early America.
Sweet potatoes are still popular today, especially in Georgia. We rank among the top three producers of sweet potatoes in the United States producing over 150,000 bushels last year with a revenue of better than $817,000.00
Fire Ant Program
(Continued From Page 1) corn cob grit (bait). This method caused the entire kernal to be saturated with Mirex. The ant sucks only the outside of the grain, leaving the rest of the Mirex to disseminate into the environment or be eaten by other insects, etc.
The new bait will be soaked with soy bean oil only and then a lesser amount of Mirex in soybean oil will be used to coat the outside of the grain. This, hopefully, will be effective in killing the costly fire ant pest with much less Mirex.
This new bait will be tested this fall while we continue with the old method of treating fire ants. If it is found acceptable by E.P.A. we will possibly be able to step up our program with the new Mirex 10-5 this next spring. The Georgia Department of Agriculture is ready to go. Funds were appropriated by the Georgia Legislature last year. When the bait is available and if weather permits we will begin treating approximately 1,000,000 acres in Georgia.

Sweet Potatoes
Easily Stored
Home grown sweet potatoes will keep well into the winter months if carefully dug, handled and properly cured.
Sweet potatoes should be dug before the first frost to prevent freezing. Any chilling is damaging so be careful not to leave freshly dug potatoes out overnight.
Good sanitation practices are important in the curing and storing of all root vegetables. Remove all potatoes which have any cuts, cracks or bruises. The ideal location for curing should have high humidity and temperatures around 80 degrees F. with good ventilation. The curing process can take anywhere from 10 days to several weeks. Sweet potatoes that are allowed to remain at high curing temperatures too long will lose considerable dry-weight and moisture content.
After curing, sweet potatoes are most successfully stored at a temperature range of 55 degrees to 60 degrees F. The storage area should be well ventilated. The best containers are mesh bags or loosely woven hampers which permit air circulation. It is a good idea to check for any decaying potatoes on a weekly basis. Then, enjoy piping hot baked potatoes all winter long!
