How tot
Egg Outlook
Appears Brighter
After a decline in production resulting from ruinous production costs in late 1974 and early 1975, the egg market outlook appears brighter for the months ahead. This is good news for the state, for its agricultural community gener-
sally, and for the 'consumer; as well as for the Georgia egg producers represented by the Georgia Egg Association.
It is good news for the state beicause eggs at Ifarm level accounted for $282,059,000 or 13.4 percent, of Georgia's total cash farm income in 1974. As other dollars are

added through processing and allied industries, it's a substantial contribution to our state's economy.
The $282 million received for eggs by Georgia farmers last year ranked below only broilers and peanuts among the 17 major contributors to Georgia's 1974 cash farm income of over $2.1 billion dollars.
Georgia is, in fact, second nationally in both egg and chicken production, and leads the nation in total poultry product income. We are proud of this and the key roles the Georgia Egg Association, Georgia Egg Commission, and Georgia Poultry Federation take in state, regional and national activities.
The egg news is good for the consumer because, even though egg prices have had to increase to make ends meet for the egg producer, eggs will still remain a remarkable bargain providing high protein.
This year has seen egg prices lower than when the Bureau of Labor Statistics first started reporting food cost figures; and even at 80 cents a dozen, eggs would be a 52-cent-a-pound source of complete protein.
Eggs have always been a godsend to the dietician and a delight to the gourmet.
They are the standard for complete protein content against which the quality of other protein

Georgia Tobacco Sales Finally End

With Prices - Marketing Problems

Seed Agencies

By Tommy Irvin Commissioner of Agriculture

Hold Nat'1 Meet Auction sales during the 1975 season on the Georgia-Florida flue-cured tobacco market took a downward turn for both volume and value.

The organization that assures American and Canadian farmers of high quality seed of adapted varieties is coming to Georgia for its 57th Annual meeting.
The Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies (AOSCA), with representatives in every state and Canada, will meet October 19 - 23 in Savannah.
Members oversee three and onehalf million acres under certification in the two countries. They work with 50 crops and more than 1,450 varieties and hybrids.
The Georgia Crop Improvement Association and Foundation Seeds, Inc., both headquartered in Athens, will host the group's first meeting in Georgia. Harvey C. Lowery, Cooperative Extension Service agronomist seed certification, and Sammie B. Parkman, manager of Foundation Seeds, are sharing responsibility for the program and arrangements.
The Association, organized in 1919, establishes minimum standards for genetic purity and quality of seeds, standardizes certification regulations and procedures, and encourages cooperation between individuals, agencies, groups and organizations in the seed industry.
Some 250 members are expected to attend the meeting.

Gypsy Moth Found
The destructive gypsy moth has been discovered for the first time in Georgia. Since only one male moth was trapped, U.S.D.A. officials said it is unlikely that the tree pest has established colonies in Georgia.
The moth was trapped in Colquitt county. No female moths or egg masses have been reported. This isolated find was probably due to moths "hitchhiking" on recreational vehicles or other objects moving out of the generally infested northeastern United States.
Inspectors will survey the Georgia discovery site for egg masses that would survive the winter. The fuzzy tan cluster each of which may contain from 100 to 1,000 eggs are laid on the undersides of tree limbs, logs, rocks, outdoor furniture and recreational vehicles. Any masses spotted should be reported to Carl M. Scott, Jr., Director, Division of Entomology, Georgia Department of Agriculture, or your local county agent.

Gross sales for the belt including 23 Georgia and 5 Florida markets totalled 190,395,745 pounds for $190,645,694.00, averaging $100.13 per 100. This volume includes 8 3/4 million pounds of resale tobacco and is down about 7 million pounds from the year before and sold for $2.68 per 100 weight less in average price. Also the total monetary value fell 12
million dollars from 1974. Georgia producers' sales amounted
to 151,485,819 pounds for $152,452,092.17 dollars averaging $1.69 per hundred.
Grade distribution for the 1975 Georgia crop indicated an overall lower quality from last year. The Federal-State Market News Service reports that a majority of grade prices were lower than a year ago. More than 50 per cent of the grade averages were down from $2.00 to $6.00 per hundred with only a few of the grade prices increasing from
$1.00 to $2.00 above last year. Stabilization cooperation receipts totaled 29,027,927 pounds or 15.2 per cent of gross sales. This was the second largest volume going under loan ever recorded for type 14 tobacco, exceeded only by the 1955 volume of 31.2 million pounds going
under loan. Growers were disappointed on the
prices paid for their leaf and were unhappy over the longest selling season in the history of Georgia flue-

For years I have visited Georgia markets during the selling season to have a first hand awareness of growers and warehousemen's problems.
Even though only 12 sets of buyers were assigned by the Marketing Committee to the Georgia-Florida belt, early sales in July were set at a daily rate which was sufficient to allow type 14 sales of 18 1/2 million pounds per week. In late July and

Tulips are one of the most, if not THE most economically valuable flower in the world. When Holland first started growing tulips, everybody became obsessed with tulipomania when virtually the entire country gambled on futures in tulips.
This tulip madness was a result of a freak of nature called the mosaic. The 17th century Dutch horticulturists were unaware of this non-fatal virus which could cause a normal tulip to break into variegated, striped, flamed and feathered colors. Offsets of the phenomenal bulb showed the same unusual markings but seedlings did not. This of course made the bulb valuable and caused "tulipomania" to spread even more rapidly.
Everybody started gambling on bulbs hoping a "bizarre" tulip would show up in their flower bed. One freakish tulip could mean untold riches for the family that owned the bulb. The Associated Bulb Growers of Holland have on record the following price for one tulip bulb: a load of grain, 4 oxen, 12 sheep, 5 pigs, 2 tubs of butter, 1000 pounds of cheese, a suit of clothes and a silver drinking cup.
Of course, eventually the bubble burst and "tulipomania" suffered the same demise as did Wall Street many years ago. But, Holland was left with thousands of gardens full of beautiful tulips multiplying thei'r hearts out. Ingenius Dutchmen made use of the volume and tulip exporting was born, certainly one of the most valuable enterprises in the world.
Now is the time to put a little Holland in your yard by taking advantage of the beautiful soon-to-beflower bulbs now available. In North Georgia bulbs can be planted through the first part of December but South Georgia gardeners' deadline is next month. Valera Jessee.
WHAT IS A CORD? How much wood do you really get when you buy a cord of firewood? The standard cord is the only standard measurement for stacked rough wood. It's often described as the outside dimensions of a stack of wood four feet by four feet by eight feet, or more simply, a volume of 128 cubic feet.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Go. Tobocco
(Continued From Page 1)
volume in Georgia-Florida back to 10 1/2 million pounds per week. This reduction caused the type 14 season to drag on into early October.
The prolonged selling season caused much tobacco to damage on the farm and on the warehouse floor and interfered with harvesting of peanuts, cotton and corn which normally are ready for market in August or September.
The Georgia markets closed out in a most unsatisfactory manner. Under the close-out procedure established by the Marketing Committee, when the markets in an area begin to close, markets remaining open should be allowed to sell at an increased rate until all the markets in that area close.
Quitman, Georgia held its final sale on Wednesday, September 24 and Pelham on Thursday, September 25. The Georgia Department of Agriculture and Georgia warehouse representatives formally requested Committee and industry representatives for increased sales opportunity to begin on the date the Quitman market closed. This increase was requested to continue for the following week with the understanding that several of the Georgia markets would need one or two days the week of October 6 to finish their sales.
Not only did the Committee and Industry spokesmen deny this request, the full Marketing Committee met on September 25 and ordered all Georgia markets to sell at the rate of 450,000 pounds or more per sale for the 4-day week of September 29 - October 2 and scheduled all buyers and graders to leave Georgia and be on markets hi the northern belt on Monday, October 6.
This action caused a heavy financial loss to Georgia growers. In order to sell out in the time allowed by the Marketing Committee, daily sales rates had to be increased to an unrealistic amount in some instances reaching 550,000 to over 600,000 pounds per set of buyers per day. Sales began before there was enough light to see the tobacco and continued to almost dark on some days.
Growers, warehousemen and graders did the best they could under these unfortunate circumstances. The Marketing Committee met again in a called emergency meeting on October 2 the day Georgia markets closed and rescinded their former action and rescheduled the buyers and graders into North Carolina and Virginia a week later on October 13, which is what the Committee should have done at the September 25 meeting.
Georgia growers and warehousemen cannot afford to let the financial loss caused by such unfair treatment as this to happen again. If more wisdom, fairness and foresight are not used by the Committee and industry leaders in scheduling flue-cured tobacco sales in all areas, some better way will have to be found to market this valuable crop.________

Plant Strawberries Now
For Best Results
If you want to have home-grown strawberries next spring, fall is the time to plant them.
It doesn't take much space. A plot 3 feet by 10 1/2 feet is all you need to grow 100 strawberry plants. That's enough to give a family of four plenty of berries for fresh use and home canning according to Maurice Ferree, horticulturist, Cooperative Extension Service.
Strawberries need full sun and good drainage. If possible, choose a planting site higher than surrounding land. Most soils are suitable, but steer away from heavy clays and deep sands.
Fertilizer should be added two weeks before the planting date. Set the plants at the same depth they grew in the nursery at least six inches apart in all directions. Water thoroughly, then mulch with pine needles, pine bark, sawdust or straw. Mulch keeps weeds out, moisture in and helps prevent berry rot.
Water the plants frequently until freezing weather sets in. Otherwise, they may wilt or die during dry spells in the fall.
"Lots of Strawberries" gives additional tips, including fertilizer requirements and recommended varieties for Georgia. For a free copy of this pamphlet, contact your county Extension agent.

individual's local county agent. The wasp is very small, about
one-eight inch long, black, with clear wings. The larvae are only slightly smaller than the adults and resemble maggots. Other than the insect itself, the chief sign of the wasp's presence are "galls" or small brown knobs on the end of the chestnut twigs.
Gall wasps lay their eggs on Chinese chestnut buds. The galls form after the eggs hatch, housing the larvae over the winter. The following spring, these buds cannot form leaves^ flower, or produce chestnuts.

New Crop Record
Apples are coming to market this month in a big way. According to marketing specialists of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the total fall crop is expected to reach a hefty 173.7 million bushels. That represents a 12 per cent increase over last year's figure and establishes a new commercial crop record.
