October Declared
Energy Saving Time
Citing energy management as the key to Georgia's and America's future, Governor George Busbee announced plans today for a statewide "Energy Conservation Month" beginning Oct. 1.
The program, to be headed by the State Energy Office and involving representatives from a board spectrum of businesses and organizations, will focus on the severity of the current energy situation. Busbee said the Georgia program will be "The most extensive and comprehensive effort undertaken hi the nation."
"Our goals will be first to increase public awareness of our energy situation and second to encourage a more conservationminded lifestyle," said the Governor.
"So that we may have a goal by which to measure our efforts, I urge each family to join me in undertaking a five percent reduction in total energy usage," he said, "Different families will choose to conserve in different ways but the important thing is that each of us conserves five percent, either in electric, motor gasoline or natural gas usage."
ABAC Tractor Pull Coming Oct. 4,5

Dear Editor: As alluded to in your article regarding the American
Chestnut, the AMERICAN CHESTNUT IS NOT LOST. In fact, a small nursery in Georgia [Pine Thicket
Farms Nursery], has these seedlings available for sale and has been selling them for several years now. Historically these seedlings have been raised from nuts from selected trees which were grown from nuts taken
from several large trees found on a granite outcropping approximately 25 years ago. There have been no reports of any of these trees having been killed by blight though many have been killed by the overzealous who insist on applying commercial fertilizers.
To that group of us who make up a rather nebulous but viable "chestnut letter writing club" the fact that
they will not tolerate fertilizer is well known. Several viable trees have been found throughout the
Eastern United States and studies are being made with them, mostly by private individuals, and a great deal of the burden is shared by Stronghold, Inc., which is a foundation headquartered at Sugar Loaf Mountain, a
preserve outside Washington, D. C. Pine Thicket Farms Nursery has, over past years,
made available to several Soil and Water agencies, U. S. National Park Service, several city parks, foundations, etc., several thousand nuts and seedlings at no
charge. As far as I am able to ascertain, there has been only
one other nursery east of the Mississippi River where American Chestnut seedlings could be obtained and this Nursery was in Iowa and has since closed, due to
illness by its owner. As to "roasting chestnuts by the fire", this is similar
to the eating of boiled peanuts; a few people like them, but most don't. American Chestnuts are best eaten raw. They are smaller than the oriental chestnuts, but are not bitter; instead they have a sweet taste.
ALL chestnuts are susceptible to the blight, even the Chinese variety which brought it to this country! However, H is thought by some, that a resistant strain is making itself known. The attempts at hybridization will not leave us with an American Chestnut at all, but
in fact, only a hybrid. These crossings have been made with intentions of
producing a better configuration for timber, more tannic acid, larger nut production and the like-not withsaving
an almost lost part of Americana. A few of us are aware of methods of rooting cuttings
and hopefully, in a year or two, production techniques will be arranged for large scale measures to augment that supplied by germination of nuts [about 70 percent -
90 percent germination]. Certainly the trees are expensive at this time,
because they are so rare. However, interest Is increasing yearly and Involves the very young as well as the very old, who can still remember them as a child.
Hopefully, I have impressed the point that the American Chestnut is not lost just foundering a little.
Baker Huff, M. D. Decatur North Professional Building
Suite 825 775 Columbia Drive Decatur, Georgia 30030
(Editor's note: Address for Pine Thicket Farms Nursery
which has the seedlings is 2622 Mercedes Drive, N. E., Atlanta 30345.)

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Oct., Nov., Dec., Horse Shows

September and October are the

peak flowering months for the

beautiful New England Aster.

Patches of white and purple

"sunflower" blooms stretching to

the sun on stalks five to eight feet

high produce a spectacular end-of-

the-summer color finale, especially

when mixed with bright blooms of

goldenrod.

How this aster came to be

dubbed "New England" is not

explained in our reference material.

The plant grows from Canada to

Georgia equally well flourishing in

moist ground throughout the eastern

seaboard.

Because these asters self-sow

readily, they can become nuisances

in the garden.

Their assets, however, make

them worthwhile to grow. They are

adaptable to most growing situations

and once established need no

fussing. The purple flower spikes

are truly one of the delights of

autumn.

Valera Jessee

Department's Deputy

(Continued From Page 1)
Agriculture, under Mr. J. Phil Campbell, as Personnel Officer. He was soon made an Assistant Commissioner and in 1967 was appointed Deputy Commissioner. Mr. Segars has continued in that position up to the present time.
In all of his activities, he has continued to show his interest in and concern for the problems of Agriculture, and those engaged hi agriculture. Mr. Segars interest is not only in Georgia or nationally but on a world-wide basis. He took the first group of Agri-Business Leaders from the State of Georgia on a GoodWill Tour to the Soviet Union and other eastern European countries. While there they studied agriculture in those areas. He has also taken groups around the world, on several trips to the Far East including Australia and New Zealand.
In 1964 General Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Segars as Chairman of the Georgia Council People-to-People (a volunteer effort of citizens to promote peace, goodwill and understanding between peoples of the world). A position of which he still holds. He has served 8 years as President of the State Employees Credit Union.
Mr. Segars felt very deeply that much of what he had been able to accomplish was due to his training at the University of Georgia School of Agriculture, and so in 1973 he accepted the Chairmanship of a Committee to set up a Foundation for the Alumni Association in order for it to give more effective leadership and service to the people of Georgia. Through the establishment of the Eterna Club, they were able to raise an endowment of over $100,000.00, the principal of which will never be spent and will be used by Ag Alumni.
Mr. Segars and his wife, Anne, will live on their farm at Route 4, Winder, Georgia, and he assures all of his friends that as long as he lives he will continue to be a friend to the farmer and to serve the cause of .Agriculture.
