Uncertain
Spring planting decisions may be as important to Georgia farmers as any made in recent years. High prices of feed grains have forced substantial cutbacks in feeding rates. Indications are that foreign demand for U.S. grain may be moderating.
Reduced foreign demand combined with a corn crop of 5.5 to 6 billion bushels in 1975 could result in a turnaround of the price movements in recent years.
The primary area of concern is in the supply-use balance. The record price increases in corn since 1972

have been due to both higher domestic utilization and tremendous increases in exports coupled with a leveling of production and then a drop in 1974. The national price may have reached a temporary plateau in the $3 to $4 per bushel range. Whether it goes up or down will depend on livestock prices (whether favorable for feeding or not), exports, and the 1975 crop.
The latest USDA estimates indicate the lowest beginning inventory of corn for the next year since 1967, 5.1 billion bushels. This means that total use will have to be cut to less than that of 1971 when 4.4 billion bushels were used domestically and 800 million exported.
If exports are at the 800 million bushel level and domestic use is 12 percent below 1973, carryover in October, 1975 would be only 100 to 200 million bushels. A 1975 crop no greater than 1974 would necessitate a further reduction in use and prices would likely move upward again.
It is not likely that production will again be as low as 1974. The yield per acre was near 72 bushels, only the second year since 1966 that average yields have been this low. With yield and acreage increases, corn production in the United States could easily reach over 6 billion bushels in 1975.
Since a Georgia farmer must make planting decisions before accurate projections of production for fall crops are possible, and estimates

Beware Purchasing Extra Care During Planting

Unsuited Chemicals Insures Healthy Shrubbery

The Georgia Department of Agriculture has recently received reports from many south Georgia farmers that they have been contacted by pesticide companies based in New York advocating the use of certain chemicals on their farms.
The chemicals which these companies are attempting to sell are registered and can be legally sold in Georgia. However, the chemicals are not registered or suited for use in the farming operation or on crop land. The chemicals that these two particular companies have been attempting to sell Georgia farmers are registered for industrial land only and should not be used by Georgia farmers on crop land.
The Department of Agriculture has presently scheduled a hearing with one of these companies to determine any violation of Georgia Economic Poison Act
Georgia farmers are warned and urged to consider any purchase of pesticides carefully; check the registration and use for which the chemical was intended, and contact their local county agent or the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Pesticides Division, 19 Hunter St., SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30334, Ph. 656-4958, if they have any doubt as

The future growth of shrubbery planted in a yard depends a great deal on

what is done at planting time. Very seldom does extra care given after planting

overcome errors made in setting shrubs.

Different kinds of shrubs have distinct requirements as far as light, tem-

perature, and moisture are concerned. Care should be taken to locate shrubs

where they will most likely succeed.

The least desirable planting site for semi-hardy shrubs, such as azaleas and

camellias, is an open southern exposure. Such type plants in this kind of

location easily lose their cold hardiness during warm periods in the winter.

Semi-hardy shrubs will survive low temperatures better if they are planted in a

partially shaded area with protection from the winter sun and wind.

In transporting balled and burlapped plants, the

shrubs should be carried with the hands underneath the

ball. Balled shrubbery should be kept watered to prevent

drying out during the period before it is planted. If it

cannot be planted immediately, it is a good plan to

"heel in" the shrubs in a temporary location. This will

provide more even soil moisture and also will prevent

the root system from freezing during periods of low

temperature.

Too deep!

It is not necessary to remove the burlap when planting balled and burlapped plants.

The best time to transplant shrubs is during the dor-

mant season, usually between November and March.

The future growth of your shrubs will depend a great

deal upon the kind of soil preparation made prior to

planting. The planting hole should be at least 24 inches

wide and 16 inches deep for best results with most

shrubs.

This large hole is especially necessary in heavy clay

soils to make possible more rapid root growth.

Placing shrubs too deeply in the soil can stunt future

Proper depth

growth. Therefore, shrubs should be planted at the same

Survey Underway
A comprehensive survey to determine costs of producing wheat, corn and other feed grains, cotton, soybeans, milk and selected commodities will include information from a sample of farmers in more than one-half of Georgia's 159 counties.
The data collecting effort will get under way January 20 and continue through February 28. A small sample of producers in Georgia and those in other parts of the country will be contacted in person and asked questions concerning 1974 costs of production.
Questions will relate to labor, power and equipment, fertilizer and chemicals, storage, drying, and other similar outlays. All responses will be confldentiai and only state, regional, and national summaries will be issued.
The survey will be conducted an-

depth that they grew in the nursery. If the shrub is not watered carefully the first year,
it is likely to die. Lack of water during the first
growing season is the major cause of unsatisfactory
results. Shrubs should be watered at least once a week during dry periods.
By watering is meant a thorough soaking not just wetting the surface of the soil. Enough water should be applied each time to soak the soil down to the bottom of the hole.

Many years ago tansy was regarded as one of the most decorative herbs in the garden. As a garden favorite it acquired many interesting common names including "Prince of Wales feathers" -- so called because the leaves resembled the ostrich plumes worn in the prince's helmet.
Tansy's bright green leaves are large and finely cut, not unlike those of a large fern. It is a hardy perennial with small buttonlike yellow flowers that bloom in late summer.
When the leaves of the tansy plant are crushed, they emit a strong, unpleasant odor. Medieval Anglo-Saxons called tansy "Stinking Willie" because of its characteristic smell, not necessarily because it was so terrible but because they had only one word in their language to express smell, good or bad.
It is this "smell" which makes tansy valuable as a strewing herb to repel insects, especially fleas and flies. It can still effectively be used for this purpose if the herb is strewn in doorways or wherever flies are attracted.
After you heed the precaution that tansy tea taken in overdoses can be fatal, perhaps you would be interested to learn that tansy's many medieval cures included a remedy for rheumatism, gout, plague, colic, sunburn, and freckles. . Tansy is an easy plant to grow. In fact it is more often than not considered a weed. It spreads rapidly when planted in full sun and it is a good idea to plant it in a submerged pot or in a strong cellophane bag and replant the bag-bound roots every three years. Such treatment will result in a dense bushy plant, perhaps as tall as four feet, bearing loose clusters of tight, yellow daisylike flowers.

to "deals" or effective useage. Further, the Georgia Department
of Agriculture would like to remind farmers that the economic situation produces a hey day for "fly by night" operations, (especially as effects farm chemicals,, fertilizers, etc.) and that they should be particularly cautious when purchasing any "miracle" or bargain products.

'75 Corn Crop
(Continued From Page 1)
of use for 1975 will be at best, speculative, what kinds of information can be used for planting decisions?
First, start with what he knows best, the individual farm and production capability. Suppose a farmer has some acreage he can plant in either corn or soybeans. His past records show his normal yields are 75 bushels per acre on corn and 30 bushels on soybeans. In 1974 the corn cost $150 per acre to produce and soybeans $ 120 or $2.00 and $4.00 per bushel respectively. If soybean prices were twice those of corn one crop would be as profitable as the other. Costs for 1975 will likely go up so he must determine if the ratio changes, i.e. will it be greater or less. Then, planting decisions can be based on anticipated prices.
The difficulty is predicting prices. As incidated, another small crop will almost certainly lend to higher corn prices, but this is only known after the fact. There are some early USDA reports on planting intentions that may be helpful. Harvested acreage usually is 7 to 10 million acres less than planted so indications of 70 million acres of planted corn or more should result in at least 60 million harvested acres. At an average yield of 90 bushels per acre (near 1972 and 1973 levels) there would be a 5.5 billion bushel corn crop in 1975. Sixty-five million harvested acres would produce over 5.8 billion bushels.
In addition to supply, the utilization rate, both domestic and exports, will be critical. Exports are announced and usually are contracted over a period of time thus, it may be possible to estimate the rate of disappearance due to foreign sales. USDA estimates of placements on feed of livestock and inventory numbers could give an idea of domestic use.
Beef feeding is particularly im-
portant as it takes a major part of the grain. If the feeding industry does not gear up again before the summer of 1975, then even with a moderate corn crop prices could be depressed at harvest.
There will be a fundamental difference in the marketplace for the 1975 crop. Throughput the sixties a large part of the grain reserves were held by the CCC. There is little doubt that government stocks tended to reduce price variation. Stocks now will be held in private hands probably resulting in more seasonal price fluctuation, if production is around 5.5 billion bushels, i.e. low at harvest, but increasing through the year. In this case storage could become an alternative. Production of 6.0 billion bushels or more could drop prices to the $ 1.10 to S1.38 per

nually to identify production practices and establish current national average costs of producing farm commodities. The information will be a major usefulness in identifying and updating budgets for crop and livestock enterprises. The survey results will also help outline production costs which have drawn considerable interest as possible determinants of target price or price support levels.
Buy Family Meat
By Serving Size
Buy according to the number of persons to be served. The following is a guide. If meat is boneless, allow 1/4 Ib. of uncooked meat per serving. If meat contains bone, allow 1/2 to 3/4 Ib. per serving.
Buy meat that does not have an objectional odor.
Buy meat that has been properly refrigerated.
Select meat according to tenderness desired.

Wins Nat'1 Title
Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Kaylor of Lee County, Georgia were named the outstanding young farm family in the country at the 56th Annual Meeting of the American Farm Bureau Federation in New Orleans, Louisiana. Wesley and Angie Kaylor competed as the Georgia Farm Bureau entry in the competition with young farmers from all across the United States. Kaylor is 29 years old.
This marked the third consecutive year that Georgia Farm Bureau has captured the national title and the second consecutive year that the winner has come from Lee County.

bushel range (loan rate and target price respectively), especially if world production of grains is up.
Forward contracting or diversified cropping may be the answer. It may be a case of selecting the alternative that would be least unfavorable in a wrong decision; there is little to go by from recent history. In short, each farmer must critically evaluate his alternatives and maybe keep his fingers crossed.

Public Hearing Held
On Pecan Regulations
The Georgia Department of Agriculture held a public hearing on January 8, 1975, concerning proposed rules and regulations which will establish standards and grades for shelled and in-the-shell pecans sold in Georgia.
After adoption of these rules and regulations, pecans sold in Georgia at retail will be required to be labeled as to grade or classification. Additionally, each retail package will be required to indicate the name of the product, net contents, and the name and address of the packer or distributor.
These proposed rules and regulations are to be amended to require each affected firm or individual to immediately notify the Georgia Department of Agriculture of the quantity of presently printed labels and labeling materials they have in stock.
Should any firm or individual have any questions or need assistance concerning the above requirements, please contact the Consumer Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Telephone No. Area Code 404-656-3621.
