Sheep Production
In Limelight
Having remained backstage in Georgia and Florida since first brought to this part of the country, sheep are now receiving the attention needed to bring them into the limelight. This marvelous utilizer of forage has always yielded the most for the least providing wool, skin, milk and meat.
For the past several decades sheep reisers have been challenged
' with many factors contributing to a decline in sheep numbers. But with impetus and determination seldom seen in any industry, leaders of the American Sheep Industry called a halt to the 30 year decline in sheep numbers at a meeting during June, 1975 at Winrock Farms near Morrillton, Arkansas. Heads of major sheep in-

dustry organizations lead by Dr. Hudson Glimp, foremost ovine authority, banded together in a joint committment for growth. With attainable goals set by these determined and respected leaders, the future of the sheep industry looks most promising.
Georgians are in an ideal situation to take advantage of the opportunities that await sheep producers. An abundance of natural forage, mild climate and an efficient marketing system should cause livestockmen to give serious consideration to this most lucrative.livestock enterprise.
Sheep can be raised on land unsuited for any other domesticated animal. They thrive on sparce natural forage and can produce the highest quality meat on nothing more than grass and mother's milk ...... a gigantic plus in a period of high production costs of hay and grain needed for other types of livestock.
Contrary to the legends of the Old West, sheep and cattle go together beautifully on the same pastures. Research has proven that they actually compliment each other in maximizing production per acre. Experiments have shown that one sheep can be grazed with each head of cattle without depriving the cattle of any forage.
Other advantages of sheep include control of weeds, little or no clipping of pastures and extra

Oops! We Goofed
On Peanut Tonnage
In last week's FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN we listed the expected peanut production for Georgia this year as over 800,000,000 tons. This should have been 800,000 tons.
In addition, we also added three extra zeros to last year's production. Instead of 831,268,000 tons, the correct figure is 831,268 tons.

Thoroughbred Assn.
fleets President
Bill Fowler is the newly elected president of the Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association of Georgia. He and his wife Mary breed and raise Thoroughbreds and Half-Thoroughbreds for hunters and jumpers on their farm in Sharpsburg, Georgia.
The purpose of the Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association of Georgia is to foster and promote the thoroughbred horse industry in the state. Any person interested in this industry is eligible for membership. The next meeting is scheduled to be held at the Stone Mountain Inn September 20th. For information, contact Mrs. Dorothy Evans, Route 1, Haynes Circle, Snellville 30278. Phone 404/466-8788.

Saturday, September 27, 1975 is a day set aside to recognize hunters and fishermen for their long time contributions to conservation. Presenting Governor George Busbee with the largest NHF Day bumper sticker in the State are: [1-r] Clanton Armstrong of Atlanta, President of the IzaakWalton League; Garth Fuller, of Athens, NHF Day Coordinator; Gov. Busbee; Jack Crockford, State Game and Fish Director; and Earl Martin of Tucker; President of the Georgia Wildlife Federation, which sponsors NHF Day each year. According to Martin, there are 300,000 hunters and over 1,000,000 fisherman in Georgia. Money from the sale of sporting licenses and excise taxes on sporting goods provides funds to support game management programs.

Soybean Field Day
The Fourth Annual Georgia Soybean Field Day will be held October 16th at Tifton from 10 am until 3:30 pm. For additional information, contact your county agent,

Ttte w Oofe?

First and foremost, the live oak is

our state tree. The Georgia General

Assembly designated it as such on

February 25, 1937. Our state tree

symbolizes strength, grace, en

durance and beauty -- reflective

qualities of Georgia.

The tree's most impressive feature

is its size. It is one of the largest trees

East of the Mississippi surpassed only

by specimen New England firs and

swamp-grown yellow poplars.

Ours is not a tall tree. Its average

height is anywhere from 40 to 80 feet.

But it is a massive tree with a branch

spread of 100 to 150 feet or more.

The trunk can range from three to

eight feet in diameter. About eight to

ten feet above the ground, the trunk

divides into three, four or five im

mense, horizontal wide-spreading

branches forming a broad, dome-

shaped crown.

Live oaks are so called because

they do not shed their leaves in the

fall when other trees lose their

greenery. Instead the leaves remain

on the trees until when new leaves

push the old ones off. Farther north,

live oaks are deciduous.

Economically, the live oak was

most prized during the era of wooden

ships. Live oak wood was so vital to

the ship building industry that the

U.S. Navy purchased live oak forests

on St. Catherine's Island off the

Georgia coast. Timbers from this

island were used to build the U.S.

frigate CONSTITUTION, the famous

"Old Ironsides".

Sheep Production
(Continued From Page 1) profits with essentially no extra cost. Also, diversification of livestock enterprises spreads the risk of operation a welcomed thought at a time of low cattle prices. I might add that I have known of ranchers that have been in the sheep business for as long as 40 years and never had a year of loss.
