Swine Inspection Rye Planting Time Near:
Render A Service
To The Consumer
During the summer of 1974 as I traveled around the Slate of Georgia and talked to people, one of the most often repeated statements I heard was, "Every time I go to the grocery store the prices have gone up!" Or the question was asked "Why in the world does my cousin in South Georgia get only 30 cents a pound for his beef and yet I'm paying 99 cents a pound for beef here in Atlanta?"
As a result of questions like this and many more the Georgia
Food Facts Council was formed in January 1975.
The Council is a group of volunteers ... experts in the fields of nutrition, agriculture, and consumer affairs. With the exception of two home makers they are each employed full time by agencies of the State of Georgia. The group was brought together by

Executive Order of the Governor to serve for a one year period.
The goal of the Council is to help the Georgia Consumer understand and cope with high food costs.
Because we hope to reach Georgians from all walks of life with much needed information about food, we have approached the problem in a number of ways.
A Seminar was conducted at Lenox Square auditorium on May 12 which will be repeated in at least two other locations in the state. The next Seminar will be September 11 at the Rural Development center in Tifton. The other location will be in Middle Georgia probably Macon.
The Seminar includes an explanation of "What Effects Food Costs" "Who Gets Your Food Dollar?" "Buy Ways That Make Cents" and "Your Food Pay Off At Home." The program is followed by a question and answer period during which the audience may direct questions to the experts. The Tifton Seminar will be moderated by Gil Patrick of WALB-TV, Albany.
The Food Facts Council, with the help of the Georgia Co-Operative Extension Service, has been running

For Farm To Farm
Movement Stopped
Inspections of swine for farm to farm movement within the state or from farm to special feeder and breeder sales will no longer be required. This ruling became effective August 15.
Health inspections will continue to be made of all swine entered at special sales. If any swine in a shipment shows evidence of illness, the entire lot will be returned to the farm of origin and quarantined. Adequate records of origin and destination must be kept so that any illness detected after sales can be traced back to the original herd.
Veterinarians will continue to

Horse Show Edition
The deadline for the October 1 Show edition is September 24. Show Listings for October, November and December will be included. The next horse show edition will not be published until January.
Only Buy Adapted Variety
It is time now for growers to obtain rye seed for this fall. Last season was a
poor one for rye seed production because of diseases and weather problems
resulting in low yields and poor quality of seed. By reason of short supply and
good demand rye seed will be scarce and expensive this coming season all
the more reason to use care in the purchase and use of rye seed.
Growers who want good winter
grazing from rye should consider
these points:
(1) Obtain an adapted variety
which will give high forage
production throughout the colder
winter months.
(2) Buy seed which has been
treated and which carries a recent
germination percentage on the seed

Dear Editor: For the last couple of ' we hove hod a very successful "Swap
and Sefl Vegetable :et" at our three Garden Centers here in Atlanta.
We think this is just great for everybody concerned. As far as we are concerned it bunas some traffic in the middle of the summer when we don't have too many people coming into our store and ifs helpful to the man or woman who has a little surplus of vegetables.
This project provided gardeners and vegetable users a service that could probably be applied to many similar situations throughout the state if some of the people knew that such a project could be suc-
cessful. Elbridge Freeman H. G. Hastings Company

There has never been a forest tragedy more devastating than the blight that killed the American chestnut. No forest fire, tornado, or parasite (including termites) even when combined can claim the timber destruction equal to the chestnut blight which ravaged our country in the early 1900's.
The fungus was brought to this country by accident, presumably on a stock of Oriental chestnut. We first became aware of the danger when chestnut trees in New York started dying. From here the disease spread in all directions as the spores of the fungus were carried by the winds from tree to tree. By the 1920's the blight had reached the Appalachians and the chestnut trees in Georgia and other southern states were doomed.
Before the blight, forests of American chestnut were common, stretching from Maine to Georgia. Historians claim that this was our most valuable tree. It was an excellent timber tree; the bark was a rich source of tannin; and the sweet nuts were a valuable food commodity.
Because chestnut trees did not bloom until late spring, thereby escaping most late frosts, the harvest of nuts was one of our most dependable crops.
When we lost the American chestnut trees, we lost more than money, though. Part of our tradition was gone.'"Chestnuts roasting on the open fire", a tree laden with creamywhite spring blossoms, family gatherings to collect nuts - all just memories.
The occasional chestnut tree that is seen growing is a sprout from live roots. These trees often grown to be 10 or 15 feet tall. Some even bloom, some will bear nuts, but they too will die.
For years now, researchers have hoped to find a species immune to the blight but with no success. Experiments are underway to cross the American chestnut with the Japanese and Chinese species, both of which are resistant to the chestnut blight. Hopefully, another generation will not go by before the American chestnuts resume their role in our country.

The Food Facts Council sponsors a weekly television program over the Georgia Educational Television network. The program, called "Food for Thought" consists of an informal panel of experts who answer questions about food.
We believe that the Georgia Food Facts Council is a good example of the cooperation that is possible between state agencies to render a service to the consumer.

furnish service at the special feeder and breeder sales for the purpose of making health inspections and issuing inter-state health certificates for swine sold into other states.
The time limit that a facility must be vacated of all animals prior to a special sale is now 48 hours instead of 72. A permit is still required from the State Veterinarian's office before any special feeder or breeder sale may be held. Also, cleaning and disinfection of the sale facilities during the 48 hour period before a sale is still required. All swine purchased at a special feeder or breeder sale are automatically quarantined to the purchaser premise for a period of at least 30 days.
New Poultry Pamphlet
Available From USDA
The U.S.D.A. has a new pamphlet available on judging and scoring milk and cheese. The pamphlet is intended for use by high school students taking vocational agricultural courses. An ability to judge and score milk and dairy products is important to anyone planning to enter the dairy and food industry.
Single copies are available on request from the Standardization Branch, Dairy Division, AMS, USDA, Washington, D. C. 20250.

best varieties, rye growout tests are conducted each year by Dr. Darrell Morey at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station at Tifton in
cooperation with the USDA and the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Rye seed lots are collected from as many commercial sources as possible and grown in plots to test trueness-to-variety. Over 600 plots were grown in 1975 and similar
numbers in previous years. During the past three years tests show the following rye varieties have been generally satisfactory, as labeled and sold in Georgia: Athens Abruzzi, Wrens Abruzzi, North
Carolina Abruzzi, Explorer, Weser, Pennington Wintergrazer 70, McNair Vitagraze, Gurley Grazer 2000, W. R. - 811, Wondergrazer
and Florida Black. Elbon rye produced in Oklahoma
and Texas has been questionable in these tests. About 50% of the samples have been true-to-variety name, while the remaining 50% have been mixtures or unsatisfactory types. Oklahoma Foundation and Certified Elbon have always been good, but there is no certain way of telling farmers where to obtain satisfactory Elbon unless
they buy Certified seed. The growout tests at Tifton show
several varieties are too winter in
growth type and produce poor forage yields. The following are not satisfactory for planting in Georgia: Wintermore, Grazemaster, KoolGrazer and T. E. Gro-Green. Other commercial strains and blends are
still being tested. Truly winter or northern rye
varieties not recommended for planting in Georgia include Balbo, Tetra Petkus, Hiawassee, Kodiak, Cougar, Puma, Coloma and several others from Canada, Minnesota,
Wisconsin and the Dakotas. The Georgia State Seed Law
requires that every bag of seed offered for sale be clearly labeled as to kind and variety, number of noxious weed seeds per pound, where grown, a germination test within the past nine months and other important information. If you have questions about rye seed or
labeling, contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

Judgment Ends seed violations
A judgment of $12,000 and costs has ended a case against Stull Brothers, Inc., Sebree, Ky., for violations of the Federal Seed Act.
The case involved 10 shipments of field corn seed which were made into six states Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina and Tennessee. The violations included false labeling as to germination, purity and "lot" of seed, and failure to keep required records.
Seed shipped by the firm into four of the states was labeled 100percent "n" cytoplasm, meaning that all of the seed was produced from plants with normal cytoplasm in the inbred lines. Such seed ordinarily produces plants resistant to southern corn leaf blight. None or only a portion of the seed was produced from plants with normal cytoplasm.
