Veterinarians Offer Assistance

Fight To Help

Feeding the hungry masses of the world is becoming an ever increasing problem and concern of all humanitarians the world over. Americans have enjoyed an abundance for so many decades that we may tend to be short sighted in preparing for the future in this respect.
Livestock producers and veterinarians must undertake
this challenge hand in hand in order to make a workable soluttion become a j reality. Our annual livestock ' & losses from disease alone could feed many huw. ngry mouths both here and abroad. Long range plans and some sacrifice must be put in motion daily to cope with future problems in feeding an overpopulated world.
Our guest columnist this week is Dr.
Herman L. Westmoreland, D.V.M.,
President of the Georgia Veterinary
Medical Assn., 1432 Riverside Dr.,

Cash receipts from farm marketings topped $2.1 billion for the first time in 1974. Livestock and livestock product sales returned $1,026,992,000 and accounted for 48.7 percent of the total while crop sales made up 50.8 percent and amounted to $1,072,396,000. Government payments plunged $46.7 million to the lowest level since 1956 and accounted for only .5 percent of the total. Commercial broilers continued it's reign begun hi 1956 as the leading source of farm income.

Tobacco Fanners
Continuing his fighting to prevent financial losses on Georgia tobacco markets, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, last week appealed to major buying companies and members of the National FlueCured Tobacco Advisory Committee for more selling time on Georgia, Florida and Carolina markets.
Citing excessive rainfall and humidity which causes cured tobacco to deteriorate and a lack of adequate farm storage facilities, Irvin said it was unrealistic to control sales at the 85 million pound weekly tobacco company capacity when over 30% of this year's fluecured tobacco is going into the government loan program and not to buying companies.
Members of the National Tobacco Advisory Committee as well as all major buying companies were contacted, asking that Type 14 tobacco be allowed to sell at the rate of 13 million pounds per week instead of 10.7 million pounds on the Georgia-Florida market and that the South Carolina border belt be given a sales rate of 20 million pounds per week instead of the present 18

Apple Pickin' And Packin' In Georgia

It's apple time in Georgia. And this delectable fruit is growing hi more ways than one. Georgia-will produce more than a half million bushels of the red and gold fruit this year. For many years the Georgia apple was mainly grown in north Georgia areas, around Ellijay and Cornelia. But during the last ten

years Georgia fruit growers have found that this can be a profitable crop and the apple has moved into
the middle Georgia area as a companion to the long time favorite Georgia peach. In fact, today there are more apple trees in middle Georgia than peaches. Many farmers are growing peaches and

apples side by side utilizing the same packing facilities. The peak time for apple picking and packing is from about August 1 to September 15, after the peaches are gone. In
addition, this early season in Georgia allows our farmers to market their fruit first, giving an advantage in the market place.

Primary varieties grown in Georgia include: Detroit, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Staymen, Winesap and Yates. Don't forget, only a few more days to get your apple recipe in to the Department of Agriculture to compete in the Apple Commission's recipe contest. Mail today.

From orchard to packing house and ready for market. These apples were grown and packed in McDuffie and Peach Counties. Photo 1. Harrison Farms in McDuffie County. 2. Young boys picking apples on the 150 acre orchard near Thomson. 3. Apples coming in from a Peach County orchard for cleaning,

sorting, and packing in Bo Hart's Marshallville packing shed. 4. Apples go through flotation and scrubbers in the Hart shed. 5. Apples bruise easily and
must be carefully packed in the Harrison Farms shed managed by Bob Hays.
Some apples are packed hi boxes for market and others in plastic bags ready for the grocery shelf.

Dear Editor
My wife and I both work so it is hard to dry apples at home. I know this idea isn't new but it works for us. We cut and peel the apples. I put tin foil behind the back seat of my car under the glass and spread the apple slices. I close all of the windows and the air vents. I go out at lunch time and turn them. In two days they are completely dry with no flies or knats to bother them.

Cottage Paw?
Cabbage palm may seem an unlikely inclusion in this column on plants that grow in Georgia, however, it is the only palm to be found north of Florida and hence grows abundantly in south Georgia.
The trunk of the cabbage palmetto grows straight and tall usually to a height of about 30 feet in Georgia. New leaves stand erect in the center of the crown, later spreading horizontally and finally downward turning brown with age.
Early Spanish explorers found the Seminole Indians eating the large cabbage-like bud growing in the center of the tree's crown. They tried \( and found it to be very tender and palatable. The tree was subsequently named "cabbage palm." Although many people have learned to appreciate the delicacy, removal of the bud permanently disfigures or even kills the tree.
Since early colonial days the trunk of the cabbage palm has been used for pilings of wharves and docks. This wood has long been valued for use as pilings of wharves and docks because the wood of no other tree has such resistance to teredos or shipworms. Palmetto logs were used to build one of our first forts on Sullivan's Island in Charleston harbor.
Seminole Indians use palmetto trunks to build their houses, and thatch their roofs with the stiff fanshaped leaves. The fibers of the leaf stalks are used to make brushes and brooms.

Vegetables, Melons Production Down
Spring vegetable and melon production in Georgia was below the same period last year, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. The lowered production resulted primarily from continuous heavy rainfall throughout the growing season.

ups but severe downs in the agricultural economic situation. It seems that no one person or
team of persons has an answer to these co_mplex problems.
Numerous government programs have not proved 100 % effective. The time honored effects of "supply and demand" are still with us and will continue to exert their influence.
We in veterinary medicine must pledge our utmost efforts to work with the livestock producer not only in treating diseases but more importantly in herd health management and disease prevention. Never has the adage "a stitch in time saves nine" been more true than in routine vaccinations, deworming, and other disease prevention methods. I am sure you will find this to be the most economical means of producing quality livestock products.
We are fortunate in Georgia to have excellent Diagnostic Laboratories to assist us in disease prevention. These are provided for your use and we hope that you will utilize their services through your local veterinarian.
