Pesticide Operators Dept. Finds Short-Weights
This To Me Need To Apply On Plant Industry Products
Is Beautiful
"Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful," I said to myself as I walked through our family garden in early morning. And to me, several factors made the sight one of exquisite beauty.
Rows of vegetables lay before me. Shiny green leaves etched with
crimson red injdicated well-grlown beets benea|th the dark broIwn soil. Glossy 1 lima bean plants I in long, straight I rows stood erect. JThe light green Heaves of half9 runners draped in umbrella fashion, while underneath hung full beans ready for harvesting. Clusters of lettuce looked like pale green balls lined across the garden. Bright red tomatoes were shown

clearly among the ragged-leafed vines in the traditional "tomato patch." As cucumber and watermelon vines crept across every vacant spot, sturdy stalks of dark green corn reached heavenward, silhouetting against the azure sky. Yes, the garden itself was indeed beautiful.
But the beauty of the garden was more than just the plants and the crop. To me it was beautiful because it represented a joint effort a project involving every member of my family. Preparing the soil, plowing, planting, hoeing, weeding, and fertilizing had involved many hours of labor. Yet, despite the toil, the dirt, and the aching backs created by that garden, it was a beautiful sight.
For me it held a rare beauty totally removed, from either of those two factors named. As I gazed in awe at that garden once more at the lawn and house just beyond, and into the distant blue sky specked with fluffy white clouds I thanked God for the sight, sight made possible by a gift.
At eighteen, the whole world had seemed bright and beautiful to me. I had graduated with honors from high school and entered Temple College

For Certification
The Georgia Department of Agriculture will be administering written examinations this fall to all commercial pesticide applicators (not farmers) who will need to be certified under the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act of 1972. The following applicators will be involved:
(1) Commercial pesticide applicators currently licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture (including Pest Control Operators). These licenses will not be valid after October 21, 1976 and all applicators will need to take another examination this fall, (whether they were "grandfathered" in or took a written exam).
(2) Pesticide applicators not producing an agricultural

Farmers, Consumers Saved By "Stop-Sale"
Last year Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin instigated a program whereby pre-packaged agricultural products could be checked for correct weight at the same time they were being checked for correctness of label.
As a result of this effort and reorganization of duties, more than 3.7 million pounds of agricultural products in addition to 1 3 thousand gallons of Pesticide products were stopped from being sold in Georgia due to short weight.
"At the prices farmers are paying today for products such as fertilizers, pesticides, feeds and seeds," Commissioner Irvin said, "the amount of money saved for the farmer by this new undertaking is in the thousands of dollars."
When plant industry division inspectors would go into a retail store to check a product for correctness oi label, they would also carry one of 12 newly purchased platform scales to see if the product was the weight specified. In most cases, of course, the weight was accurate. And the majority of violation's were only one or two pounds short on a fifty or 100

Dear Editor: Please mention in the BULLETIN that if folks have questions
about the recipes published in the paper and expect an answer they should enclose a stamped envelope. I have been "diluged" with questions about my cinnamon roll recipe. They all love it but want answers about can you freeze them, etc. I will answer all the letters but need stamped envelopes since I am an invalid and have to send someone for my stamps.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
This To Me Pesticide Operators
Trumpet Cteepet?
"There is a pretty vine Who has many orange flowers Right in the middle of the garden And when it is pretty, It is very, very pretty; But when it is bad, It is horrid."
Trumpet creeper IS a pretty vine. It has bright orange blooms clustered among lacy bright green leaves. It bears, long heavy canoeshaped seed pods which dangle from suspended vines in trees or on fences.
But it is also a bad weed, a horrid weed. The graceful seed pods are chocked full of winged seed that sprout and seemingly grow overnight.
One beautiful lacy vine planted with discretion in your landscape will produce beautiful orange flowers as well as many, many offspring.
The roots go deep on these vines, too. When you pull them, they usually break off, leaving the rootstock in the ground.
Trumpet creeper is a native American vine. It's home can be anywhere from New Jersey to Florida, from the cornfield to your flower garden.

The Pesticide Residue Lab of the Georgia Department of Agriculture is highly specialized and is able to detect very low levels of a large number of complex organic compounds including insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and certain industrial chemicals. The detection levels are in the parts per million, billion, and in some cases parts per trillion.
Samples tested by this lab include all kinds of foods for human consumption (vegetables, meats and fish, dairy products), animal feeds and feed ingredients, soils, water (pond and well), stomach contents and body organs from both human and animal sources.
Many vegetables are sampled from the growing field before harvest to insure that no above tolerance amount of residue is present. A survey of milk throughout the state is constantly being made. A program of checking feed ingredients materials for pesticide residues for information purposes is in effect.
REVIVE FLOWERS
A teaspoon of detergent added to wilted cut flowers will revive them according to floriculture experts.

to prepare myself for my life's work. After just one month at Temple, I suffered a sudden loss of sight, a loss that left me 90% blind. For twentysix months I lived in a state of constant dread, a penetrating fear that the next day would bring total blindness. And for an excessively independent-minded teenager, that seemed the worst of all possible fates.
Then in 1967 I became the recipient of a corneal transplant. Through an eye will, a 72-year-old man had donated his eyes so that someone might have a new lease on life and I was the fortunate one who was given a chance to live a full, rewarding life as a result of that gift. With each new sight I am again thankful.
From the close-range view of my garden and home, I cast my view to this great land of which I am a minute part. America is my heritage. She has given me freedom freedom to live, love, and direct my life as I choose. With that freedom, however, comes responsibility, responsibility to respect the laws and the rights of my fellow man, as well as be a productive citizen, contributing whatever I can to maintain my nation. As I dedicate myself anew to greater service, I can likewise expect greater commitment from fellow Americans. This to me is beautiful.
Our garden holds beauty because I can see it and work in it. My family is beautiful because I can see those I love and share with them their joys and sorrows. My country is beautiful, for it has allowed me freedom to set a high goal and strive to help improve society. In fact, I can simply and sincerely say: "Life is beautiful!"

commodity and not currently licensed by the Department of Agriculture (such as federal, state or local government employees, research or demonstration workers) who use certain highly toxic pesticides that are expected to be restricted to certified applicators''only. If you believe you are in one of these two groups of pesticide applicators, and have not received a package of more detailed information from the Georgia Department of Agriculture, you should contact: Mr. George Thornton, Georgia Depart-
ment of Agriculture, Pesticides Division, 19 Hunter Street, S. W., Atlanta, Georgia 30334, (404) 6564958.
Training manuals have been developed by the Cooperative Extension Service and may be secured through the Georgia Department of Agriculture. All examinations will be based on the material contained in these manuals.
The Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Georgia will provide training for those who request it. Training is not mandatory, but is recommended. You should pre-register for the free training prior to September 15, 1975. Pre-registration forms are included in the infer-mation packages from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Seating at all training centers is limited.
The first two days of each training session will be the same for all commercial applicators based on the EPA general standards. The third day of each session will provide training for the operational categories designated on the training schedule. Present plans call for training to be provided only between September and December, 1975.

pound bag. "But," according to Elmo Win-
stead, Assistant Commissioner, in charge of Plant Industry, "some 100 pound bags of fertilizer contained less than 85 pounds and some fifty pound bags were 10 pounds short."
The feed and seed store operators were happy with the new program and cooperated well as they and their customers were paying full price for short-weighted products.
Commissioner Irvin stated that he was so pleased with the results of this program that his department is purchasing 12 additional scales for use by the plant industry inspectors.
In addition, Irvin said, wholesalers are finding out that they must do a better job of quality control and checking or their product will not be Sold in Georgia. This department is going to continue to do everything in its power to see that the farmers and consumers are getting what they pay for and will not be gyped on quality or quantity.
