Certified Seed

Work For Quality
The Georgia Crop Improvement Association is an organization of seed growers, processors and others who are interested in growing and making available to the public through certification, high quality seeds and propagating materials of superior varieties so grown and distributed as to insure genetic purity and high quality.
The overall goal of the Association is to make high quality
seed of an adapted variety available to all the farmers in Georgia.
Farmers have three classes of seed to select from:
Farmer to Farmer These seed are sold by one farmer to another. In general, they are of the lowest quality available, as they are exempt from all provisions of the Georgia Seed Law provided the seed are sold at the farm and are not advertised and/or transferred by public carrier.
(Our guest columnist this week is A. B. Carlan, President of the Georgia Crop Improvement Assn., Rt. 3, Whitehall Rd., Athens 30601.)

Non-Certified Seed

Com-

mercial seedsmen distributes these

seed, which must meet or exceed the

minimum standards required by the

Georgia and Federal Seed Laws.

Non-certified seed, in most cases, are

of an adapted variety of high quality,

but may be unadapted and of poor

quality barely meeting the minimum

standards required by law. Note

Read the seed tag and know what

you are buying.

Certified Seed These seed are

distributed by commercial seedsmen

and are of known pedigree and per-

formance. They are produced,

processed and labeled under the

supervision of the Georgia Crop Im-

provement Association.

Certified seed in addition to

meeting the minimum standards

required by law, must also meet or

exceed the minimum requirements of

the Georgia Crop Improvement

Association. The minimum GCIA

standards are considerably higher

than those required by law for non-

certified seed.

Certified seed growers are under a

strict limited generation system. This

means that a grower must plant

either Foundation or Registered

seed as the increase from certified

blue tag seed is not eligible for cer-

tification.

EPA Oil Spill
Regulations
The US Environmental Protection Agency reminds owners and operators of oil storage facilities of oil spill prevention regulations.
Regulations apply to all facilities having above ground tanks with a storage capacity of 661 gallons or more, or if the total storage capacity exceeds 1320 gallons.
Facilities storing more than 42,000 gallons underground also are covered by the regulations, the EPA official added.
.During a two year period, 197273, non-transportation related spills totaled 822,100 gallons in the southeastern states. Recovery costs averaged $5.00 per gallon.
Business and government interests needing more information on spill prevention plans should contact EPA, Region IV, Atlanta, Ga. 404/526-3931.

Stone Mtn. Officers
The Stone Mountain Memorial Association re-elected the chairman and vice-chairman to 1975-76 terms at the June 30 meeting of the Association.
Georgia Attorney General Arthur K. Bolton remains chairman of the seven-member governing board for Stone Mountain Park and Thomas T. Irvin, Commissioner of Agriculture, was re-elected vice-chairman.

LIGHT in the blue to ultraviolet range, proven a potent attractant for many insects, has been used to successfully control a number of important economic pests of pecans.
Results show a 70-percent reduction in shuckworm infestation over a 3-year test period using blacklight traps at the Southeastern Fruit and
Tree Nut Research Station, Byron, Ga.
Presently,"control of shuckworms consists mostly of frequent insecticide applications throughout the growing season. The only pesticides used in conjunction with blacklight traps were one mid-season application of a foliar systemic insecticide for aphid control, and five applications of a fungicide at 30-day intervals for disease control.
During the season before testing began, shuckworm infestation was at 72 percent in the test orchard, and 98 percent in an untreated area maintained as a check.
After two seasons of trapping, shuckworm infestations were reduced to the economic threshhold of 25-30 percent. On the average, producers can afford to live with infestations at or below this level.
During the third testing season, in-

Oglethorpe Festival

Oglethorpe County has announced plans for a Fall Festival to be held October 1 - 5 in Lexington. Arts and crafts, parades, and "lying contests" will be featured. Interested parties should contact Ted Ridgeway, 7435195 for information on participating.
CORRECTION NOTICE
In last week's BULLETIN, Bulloch County tobacco farmers R. L. Shuman and W. P. Clifton were photographed in front of the Statesboro Tobacco Warehouse and not the Claxton as stated in error.

Egg inspectors from Georgia's Department of Agriculture and egg producers from across the Southeast check eggs for quality and grade in a laboratory session during the Egg Quality and Grading School. Here participants use hand candlers, air cell gauges and notebooks to properly identify the quality of each egg checked. The annual school is sponsored by Southeastern Poultry, and Egg Association in cooperation with the Georgia
Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the University of Georgia.

There is a rumor going around that this plant is the miracle cure for poison-ivy fact or fiction?
Our research reveals that perhaps the plant can relieve the agony of poison ivy for some. According to ALL ABOUT WEEDS by Edwin Spencer, "Rubbed on the affected skin the juice of this plant frequently brings almost immediate relief and a complete cure is likely to result in 24 hours."
If it really works, it is easy to understand why some folks call the plant jewelweed, not because its orange or yellow flowers look like precious gems but because the plant is a treasure in itself to poison ivy sufferers.
This plant, however, is not as easy to find as the poison ivy it supposedly cures. It likes shade, rich soil and adequate moisture. The stems are "glassy" looking and contain a watery juice at swollen nodules along the stem. Of course, the easiest way to find them is to "touch" their seed pods and watch them fly.
Their pedigreed relative, balsam, is also a reputed poison-ivy cure. So if you can't find the wild weed, perhaps the garden variety of touchme-not will substitute.
The dermicidal concoction, however, will not keep in the refrigerator or on the medicine shelf. Those into natural medicine recommend boiling jewelweed in water and straining the liquid into ice trays. Supposedly rubbing the ice cubes over exposed skin will eliminate any rash.
A report published by the U.S.D.A. in 1950 admits that wild-touch-menot does contain fungicidal properties used in treating many dermicidal problems, including poisonivy.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Try Drying Fruits, Vegetables

For Good, Economical Eating

An additional six million new home gardens were sown during the current growing season.
During the summer months, nature provides an over-abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. We've talked a lot about canning the fruits of our labor but many varieties are suitable for home drying.
Drying is one of the oldest, simplest, and most economical methods of food preservation.
The drying method of food preservation has several advantages. Not only does the removal of moisture prevent bacterial growth, but it reduces the weight and bulk of the * food. This makes it possible to store large quantities of food in a small amount of space and in any type of air-tight container.
Although both fruits and vegetables can be dried satisfactorily, fruits are more easily preserved because of their high sugar content. Some fruits that dry easily are apples, pears, peaches, apricots, cherries, plums, figs, dates and berries.
Vegetables best suited for drying are .sweet corn, mature beans, peas, and pumpkins. Others which are more difficult to dry are the rapid growing, young vegetables such as, asparagus, greens, celery, cauliflower, english peas, green snap beans, and okra.
In selecting produce for drying, choose only fresh, ripe, firm and perfectly clean foods. They should be processed as soon after picking as possible. Trim away bruised or inedible spots, then cut into small strips or slices about 1 /8 to 1 /4 inch thick so that the pieces will dry quickly.
To minimize the darkening of fruit, it is recommended to soak the pieces in a salt so-lution for 20 minutes. Use 3 to 5 teaspoons of salt per gallon of water.
Smoking Smoking fruits with sulfur helps retain their natural color and flavor. Use 1 teaspoon of sulfur per pound of fruit. Wrap the sulfur in paper, drop it in a tin container, then place the fruit near the burning sulfur and cover with a large, vented box. Smoke the fruit for 20 minutes. Vegetables should be blanched or steamed to preserve their quality and color and to speed up drying time.
' Sun Drying The simplest and least costly is sun drying. It requires consecutive, sunny days with high temperatures. It has a double advantage in that there is no

festation was down to about 14 percent.
The scientists point out that while blacklight trapping can be considered successful based on these test results, further studies are needed on the feasibility and economics of the technique in pecan orchards.
ARS personnel who worked on this project were agricultural engineer John S. Smith, Jr., entomologist Cecil R. Gentry, and technicians George W. Edwards and John L. Blythe. They put four blacklight traps per acre in an 8-acre orchard at a height of about 1 5 feet in the pecan trees. The orchard had 81 trees.

expense for fuel and no danger of over-heating.
Simple trays can be constructed of strips of wood, then heavy fabric can be stretched over the frame to form a bottom. The food should be spread in a thin layer so that it will dry quickly. To keep out dust and insects, a layer of cheesecloth can be used to cover the top of the tray. For effective drying, the trays should be placed in a slanted position facing a southern exposure. To ensure even drying, stir or turn fruit several times a day. Sun drying will probably take three or four days.
Oven Drying Another method of home drying is in your oven. The advantage of this method is that it is independent of weather conditions. Similar wooden trays as used in sun drying can be used in the oven. Spread food in a thin layer on the tray, then leave the oven door open during the entire process. The oven temperature should be low and constant. It is recommended that the oven temperature be set at 150 to 175 F. Stir foods frequently to prevent burning and to assure uniform drying. Most vegetables dry in four to 12 hours, while fruits need six hours or longer. Before storing, it is important to test your produce for dryness. To test fruits, squeeze a handful together, if they fall apart when the grip is released, they are thoroughly dried. Vegetables should be crisp and brittle to the touch.
Conditioning Conditioning is the next step in the drying process. This ensures even dryness and prevents growth of mold. Place food loosely in a deep container in a dark location. Stir the product each day for eight to ten days. After conditioning, dried products need to be heated to destroy any microorganisms that may have been deposited on the food during the drying process. Heat for 30 minutes at the temperature of 150 F.
Storing Always store dried foods in resealable, air-tight containers. Place containers in a cool, dark, dry location. Periodically examine the product for signs of moisture. If food becomes moist, heat for 15 minutes at 150 F.
Cooking To rehydrate dried products, cover with warm water and soak until plump. This will usually take less than two hours. Cook foods in the same water to retain as much nutritive value as possible. Cooking times will vary between 10 to 30 minutes. By using dried surplus foods, your family can enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the winter months.
Outdoor Cooking
Long summer evenings are a perfect time for cooking outdoors. To get that tantalizing smoke flavor, add wood chips such as hickory, oak, apple or cherry to the fire.
Soak the chips in water at least one hour before using so they will burn slowly.

Certified Seed
(Continued From Page 1)
The Georgia Crop Improvement Association has 600 active members, 1200 growers producing seed under contract and 84 approved processing plants. Under the supervision of the Georgia Crop Improvement Association these growers produced some 109,000 acres of seed crops in 1974. From this production the association has tagged over 1,700,000 bags of certified seed. This is an all time high for the association. Certified seed was available this spring to plant the following percent of the acreage devoted to the major crops in 1974. (1) Hybrid Corn - 50%, (2) Cotton 80%, (3) Peanuts - 95%, and (4) Soybeans - 75%.
Georgia certified seed is packaged in either a GCIA emblemed or branded bag and is labeled with one of the following official tags (1) Foundation (white tag), (2) Registered (purple tag), and (3) Certified (blue tag).
