What's Wrong
With Economy?
So much is being said about the economic conditions in Georgia and in the nation that I think it's time to look to the basis of the problem.
Everything comes from the soil either directly or indirectly. When
we examine the downward trend in our economy and see so many people out of work and see our income to the state of Georgia dropping monthly, we need to look at the source of our economic drop to determine where the problem lies.
(Ovr guest columnist this week is State Representative Dorsey Matthews, Chairman, House Agricultural Committee, Mouttrie.)
The upturn in our economy must start with the farmer. The net income of the nation's farmers is at a low ebb due to several conditions. Inflation has caused the farmer to buy as little as he can possibly to get by. The cost of production has grown out of proportion to the return for the finished product, leaving him little or no purchasing power. The farmer, the bonafied farmer who produces the food and fiber for the nation and the world, must be the first to start the ball rolling.
Foremost, he must receive a fair net income from his labors. He must have enough net income to buy the manufactured products he cannot produce for himself. For instance, if his net income after paying for fertilizer, insecticides, herbicides, fuel for the tractors, loan payments on his farm and equipment, and taxes is not sufficient to purchase the manufactured goods, then the whole world feels the difference.
The cotton farmer is in bankruptcy, the cattle farmer is in bankruptcy and only peanuts, tobacco and soybeans are holding their own with sufficient profit for the farmer to exist.
1975 is the last year we have with this present peanut program. There are so many enemies of the tobacco program we have no guarantee that it will last. Exports of these commodities are dwindling because of economic conditions in foreign countries who import these products from us.
When the net income on the farm

Centuries Old "Pest'

Last year flies cost Georgia cattlemen approximately $38,200,000 according to estimates taken by the Division of Entomology of the University of Georgia. Flies have been regarded as pests to man for centuries. At one time in history they were disease carriers, causing plagues throughout Europe. To cattlemen, however, they are an economic threat.

4-H Horse Clinic
A 4-H horse clinic will be held August 3-8 at Stone Mountain coliseum. The clinic is for ages 10 through 18.

Cattle Seminar

Specific losses are difficult to measure and assess although a cattleman instantly recognizes loss of cattle "condition" caused by flies. Uncontrolled infestation of flies can cause a significant daily weight loss in cattle.
These "beef thieves" come in several forms; the horn fly, the stable
fly, the face fly, the horse fly and deer fly.

A Cattle Health Seminar will be held July 30 at the Rural Development Center, Tifton. Registration is at 9 a.m.

THE FACE FLY
The face fly was first discovered
in New York in 1953 and resides mostly in north and middle Georgia. These feed around the face of the animal; near the eyes, the lips and in and around the nostrils. Although face flies are not blood-sucking pests, they are believed to be a contributor in the ppread of eye diseases. They
are thought to contribute especially to the pink eye syndrome which reaches epidemic proportions in north and middle Georgia.
Last year's loss to Georgia cattlemen from the face fly was estimated at $1,000,000.

Bulloch County tobacco farmers R. L. Shuman and W. P. Clifton take a break on the gold leaf outside the Claxton warehouse as Georgia tobacco sales move into the second week.

THE HORN FLY Horn flies are small blood-sucking insects, about one-half the size of the house fly. They are constantly on cattle around the horns, along the back and around the withers. Eggs are laid in fresh manure where the larvae feed. This "beef thief reproduces from early spring till late fall. Cattle waste calories and energy that could be utilized for beef and milk production by fighting the horn flies constantly. Fly annoyance also interrupts normal grazing. According to Dr. Ed Snoddy, Medical Entomologist, University of Georgia, horn flies alone cost the Georgia cattlemen approximately

Page 11
:!S

How can we best fight slugs when they are widespread? J. C., Lyons.

A spray or slug bait, available at nurseries or garden centers. Stale beer

can be used also.

***

Sometimes I get eggs with yolks that are bright yellow while others are dark orange. I'm told the darker yolks are the freshest. Is it so? B. P., East Point.

According to the hen, there are several different acceptable colors for egg yolks. The pigment of the yolk is determined by the amount of protein feed the little lady receives. The darkness of the yolk does not have any bearing on the freshness of the egg.
***
Now that I finally have all of the ingredients household ammonia, saltpeter, baking powder, and epsom salts, I have misplaced the formula for the fertilizer. Do you have it? S. B., Alpharetta.

Yes Ma'am. 2 teaspoons household ammonia, 1 teaspoon epsom salts, 2

teaspoons saltpeter, 2 teaspoons baking powder dissolved in 1 gallon of

water.

***

Who sells piston lub motor oil? J. L., Cedartown.

All major oil companies and many independent distributors. Contact your local distributor and explai*n *th*e type of oil you need.
What kind of tree does the enclosed leaf come from? Mrs. G. W., Cedartown.

We need more than a leaf, please ma'am. Then we can identify it for

you.

***

My flower beds and vegetable garden are being overrun with some kind of grass samples enclosed. Can you identify and is there anything I can use on it that won't harm my flowers and vegetables? L. S., Atlanta.

The grass appears to be Crabgrass. The only postemergence herbicides

that will control crabgrass will kill your flowers and vegetables. We

mailed you a pamphlet that hopefully you can use to prevent crabgrass in

future years.

***

I bought this plant as Ginseng but it doesn't look like any I ever saw. G. R., Madison.

It is not Ginseng but without flowers or fruits we cannot positively identify. Looks like wild Geraniu* m*. *
Help! Is there a way I can fight my own private war with a hill of fire ants that is growing beside and gradually possessing my little porch? What with? I bumbled into them, developed a multitude of little blisters on my foot and ankle which swelled and itched horribly; I clawed myself, endured agony for several days, and the druggist could not provide anything to alleviate my misery. Not until I read about them recently did I know what they were. There is also another hill (they look so innocent) a-building about 20 feet from the porch. Should I attack those also? Please tell me what to do. Mrs. J. S., Norcross.

Apply 10% Chlordane on and around the mounds. You might also check your nursery or garden center for Mirex Fire Ant Bait as it has been quite effective in the control of fire ant populations.
***
I am writing to ask about a (to me) new wasp or hornet or something. This pest was building a nest in my barn. It is yellow, much like a honey bee and about the size. The nest was like a hornet's but a little different in color. Mrs. O. W., Villa Rica.

The insect you mailed us was one of the yellow jackets. There are 17 species of yellow jackets in the U.S. Some build nests in buildings and most are known for their vicious stings. You could use Sevin dust or spray or one of the wasp and hornet b*om* b*s for control.
What will kill ground ivy? It is all over my yard. E. B., Atlanta.

Spray ivy with Silvex for control. It will take about three weeks for it to

take effect.

***

Could you tell me the best way to ship small lots of vegetables north? Particularly tomatoes. Mrs. S. S., Farmington.

We were advised Air Express. However, the cost is so high you could buy them cheaper. And, you would have to ship green tomatoes as pinks or ripes would develop a problem -- rot. It is not feasible to ship vegetab les a long distance in small quantities unless they are dried, canned, re frigerated or frozen.

How do you get a brand form and brand registered in the state of Georgia? S. H., Summerville.

The vet division mailed you a brand information sheet and application

form. Indicate three choices on the application form, draw the brand on

the cuts exactly where you wish to place your brand and return the form

to us. That's all.

***

Snakes alive! I have them coming through my hedges around the front of my house. I bought some repellant but it is no good and besides, it is too high. What can I do? E. P., Atlanta.

Mr. Handy, Game Management, Natural Resources, advises that snakes

do not respond very readily to stimulants except for heat and cold and are

hard to control by chemical means. Keep your hedges trimmed and your

yard and lawns clean. Snakes prefer cover and they also prefer an area

that has food in the way of rodents or other small wildlife. You might try

powdered sulphur and moth crystals mixed in equal portions and spread

around in areas you want protected from snakes. However, there is no

guarantee with that one.

***

I found this beautiful plant on the creek bank and want to transplant it to my yard. Is it poisonous and how do I transplant? I enclosed some leaves. M. W., Whitesburg.

It is Kalmia latifolia L. (Mountain Laurel). Species are poisonous and consumption of .2% to 1.3% of the body weight is enough for sheep, cattle and deer to show symptoms. Livestock will not normally eat the plant unless food is scarce. Good survival occurs if you transplant in early spring (March), in a habitat similar to the one where the shrub is growing (cool, moist and rocky woods), and if you plant shallow and cut the top back severly (12 to 18 inches.). * * *
Can you paint a building with creosote if the old paint is latex? If not, is there something similar to creosote that can be used? E. O., Lafayette.

We do think you would have a difficult time trying to apply creosote over latex paint. Generally speaking, creosote would not penetrate the latex since it is an oil solution. We don't know of anything similar to creosote right off hand. Check with a reputable paint store in your area.
***
What can I use to repel bats so I can seal off the attic? W. S., Cedar Springs.

Paradichlorabenzene crystals placed in the attic should do the job. They are commonly known as moth crystals and it may take several pounds to get rid of the bats. * * *
We have gnats I suppose but I can never see them. Could it be something else? L. S., Atlanta.

Dr. Ed Snoddy, THE GNAT EXPERT, advises that you may have black flies or "no-seenms". Use ample insect repellant when outdoors and keep all animals and animal pens as far as possible from your house. Keep all organic litter such as grass clippings away from the house area also.
***
Why do my strawberries rot before they ripen? C. H., Fayetteville.

Your strawberries should be mulched to keep them from touching the ground. You can use pine bark, pine needles or grain straw for a mulch. This will prevent fungi in the soil from rotting your strawberries.

RESPONSE Tell the lady who said rabbits ate her beans that if she uses chicken manure in the garden the rabbits will not bother her beans. They won't bother anything including flowers with chicken manure spread around. J. P., Sylvania.

Page 12
There was a time in England when anyone who permitted jimson weed to grow in his garden was thought to be in cahoots with the devil. Since superstition was running rampant, little encouragement was needed for persecution of those affiliated with the demon of the deep.
You might think that you too have been cursed if you find jimson weed in your yard. Although it is a reasonable easy weed to eradicate, it somehow manages to pop up in the choicest spot in the garden. In fact, it is most at home in the rich muck of hog pens. There is no danger of consumption by the 'oinkers, however, since the plant is accompanied by a strong, disagreeable odor.
This odor is probably the plant's most distinctive characteristic. Once you have crushed a leaf of this disagreeable plant, you will never again have trouble recognizing it. Creative people have nicknamed it stinkweed, stinkwort, devil's trumpet, devil's apples, mad apple and thorn apple.
It is called jimson weed as a corruption of "Jamestown Weed," since the first recorded presence of the plant was at this colony in the new world. The Indians quickly relinquished any knowledge of it by calling it the "whiteman's weed" since it seemed to grow best near the white man's house.
Medicinally, jimson weed is one of the best sources of atropine, a drug used to dilate the pupil. Mountaineer girls, who sometimes lived dangerously anyway, squeezed a little of the jimson leaf juice in their eyes to make them shine.
Jimson weed is a pleasant looking plant with its white or purple trumpet-shaped flowers. The plant itself has the general shape of a spreading shade tree. Its appealing qualities are few, however, when you consider what might have happened to you centuries ago if the plant had been seen growing near your house.

I have a 3 month old calf with what appears to be warts rapidly developing around the neck and head. Is it curable? Can I have them also? A. W., Jesup.
Warts are usually caused by a virus infection. They may be transmitted from one cow to another. We don't believe they are transmissible to people. However, for an exact diagnosis, please contact your vet as we don't want your calf to be sick. * * *
Is there any way to prepare fresh cabbage for slaw and put it in the freezer? Also, how do you cure green onions so they won't rot? Mrs. J. L., Springfield.
Our home economist says cabbage is one of "those" that cannot be frozen successfully so we can't answer that. However, we mailed you a pamphlet on home freezing that may help out. Store your onions in a shady place, such as a carport, for five to seven days after they have been dug. Once they have dried, wring the tops off and hang in a mesh bag for storage.

dwindles to this point, then the state's appropriations are going to feel it and feel it fast. The people that manufacture automobiles, televisions, refrigerators and a thousand and one items that are produced for sale to the public will also be cut in this squeeze of economic situations.
Only when a change is made to give those who produce the food and fiber of this nation more return on their investments and labors, will there be an improvement in the economy and state's income.
Cattlemen

$20,500,000 last year.
THE STABLE FLY The stable fly may be more troublesome than the horn fly if found in large numbers. This bloodsucking insect is found throughout the United States and lays eggs in either manure or decaying vegetation. Last year's loss to cattlemen was estimated at $15,800,000.
HORSE AND DEER FLIES Horse and deer flies are cosmopolitan; they are found from north Georgia to the coastal area where severe outbreaks are common. The larvae live in an aquatic or semiaquatic situation. The female of this species does the damage as the males are not found on animals. Horse and deer flies cost $900,000 last year. For information on and control of the "beef thieves", contact your county agent.
