Work Together
Last month I attended the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. Farmers and agriculturists, due to their individual nature, usually are not prone to meetings and organizations. But this is a good, productive organization and I feel strongly that by working together with other southern states we can and have accomplished things of benefit to the southern farmer that would not have been possible working alone.
During this recent meeting, I sponsored several resolutions that
were passed by the member states which will hopefully bring to the attention of the federal government, or others involved, the feelings of this association and thereby get results. For instance, one of my resolutions strongly opposed the increased tariff on imported crude oil as this very directly effects agricultural production and farmers individually. Another resolution was also directed to the United States' involvement in imports and exports, opposing foreign aid programs which help countries produce a surplus of an agricultural product and places this surplus in direct competition with
American products. I know of no other country that would allow U.S. commodities to be imported in direct competition with their own country's products. And I opposed the lowering of tariffs on imports which compete with commodities produced in the United States.
On the other hand, to assist our export grain program I, through resolution, encouraged the U.S.D.A. not to allow the quality of American grain and soybean exports to be discredited by lax inspection.
Closer to home, the Southern Association supported a resolution for the study and implementation of a realistic swine tuberculosis eradication program and a resolution encouraging the acceptance of poultry litter usage as a commercial feed.
I was also .glad to introduce and have passed a resolution calling for the opposition to changes in the interstate milk shipments conference

First Blue Tog Many Activities

Certified Pines
Twenty-one years of hard work by the Georgia Forestry Commission has paid off. The Georgia Crop Improvement Association has inspected and approved for blue tag certification 12.8 acres in the Georgia Forestry Commission Davisboro Seed Orchard.
This is the first blue tag certification of pine seed in the United States. Seed coming from this area will be from trees of proven genetic superiority. The species involved is slash pine.
The seed will be planted in the spring of 1977 which will make blue tag certified tree seedlings available for the 1977-78 planting season.
which would virtually turn this now good and workable voluntary cooperative agreement into a Federal Food and Drug Administration, government regulatefd program.
There were many other good resolutions introduced by our sister states which came out of this meeting dealing with Brucellosis, Fire Ants, beef imports, natural gas and power production.
There is a time to stand alone as a free individual. But there is also a time and a need for joining together in strength for the betterment of American Agriculture.

For Cotton Day
Cotton Promotion Day will be held at the Methodist campground three miles north of Vienna on July 16th beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Activities for the day will include a cotton fashion show, crowning of the Cotton Queen for Georgia, gospel singing entertainment, complimentary barbecue lunch and others. The finest display of cotton production equipment to be assembled during the entire year will be on exhibit. There will also be a report on new developments
Among guests present will be Georgia Cotton Queen Libby Stegall; Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin; Georgia Cotton Commission Chairman P. R. Smith; L. W. Eberhardt, Jr., Executive Secretary, Commodity Commission for Cotton and Governor George Busbee.
Man-Of-Year Named
At the June annual meeting of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Associa<tion, Dr. James F. Andrews, State Veterinarian with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, was presented the Veterinarian-of-theYear Award. Dr. Andrews has been associated with the Georgia Department of Agriculture since 1967.

Number 27
The Bugs Are Comln'
Is this the year of the tag? According to experts over the state, bug populations usually increase after a mild winter such as the one Georgia experienced this year. Many of the bugs that don't normally survive the winter did so this year and got an early start in spring. The ideal weather conditions for bug growth during the mild, wet spring has caused home gardeners to be appreciative of the problems of the farmers.
With a large number of people gardening this year, there seems to be a new awareness of the "tag". The high prices of pesticides has caused many who normally buy to stall. Thus, more bugs.
There seems to be an increase in the spider population also. Spiders feed on insects; more insects, more spiders. This is one of Mother Nature's ways of keeping things in balance.
If you are pestered by tags, take heart so is everyone else. Use the correct pesticide for your particular insect according to package directions. Before you spray or dust, however, be sure your bug is a bad bug.
New Fertilizer
Looks Like Beads
A fertilizer that resembles insect eggs is causing some homeowners to look twice at the container grown nurserystock or pot plants they purchase. The fertilizer, which may be clear or multi-colored, is usually on the surface or mixed inside the potting soil.
This is a new type of slow release fertilizer which consists of standard dry fertilizer particles coated with a plastic-like material. When these 'beads" come in contact with water, the fertilizer dissolves and seeps out at a very slow rate.
The new fertilizer formerly was available to commercial nurserymen only but now may be purchased at garden centers.
Read the label carefully as the "beads" release the fertilizer over a three to twelve month period, depending on the formulation purchased. The plastic-like coating usually remains for several months after the fertilizer inside is used up.

Dear Editor: When our house burned, I lost all my recipes. I would ap-
preciate the readers of this paper sending me some of their favorites.

Dear Editor: I have something to say concerning people who order
from ads in the BULLETIN. I suppose other advertisers must have the same problem.
Why can't people send a stamped envelope when they order something like a quilt pattern. I get orders with 25 cents for the pattern and nothing to send it back in. I pay 10 cents for a stamp plus envelope and the pattern, so what do I have left?
Thanks for printing this. Maybe someone will notice. Miss Dovis Pilgrim Route 4 Cleveland, Georgia 30528

Beautiful white or pink flowers, sweet fragrance, dinner-plate leafy pads the absolute essence of a tranquil pond. Blossoms appear in the morning and close in the afternoon. The seed pods can't be seen among the pads because after pollination the flower stem sinks below the surface to develop its seeds underwater.
In times gone by, it was customary to use water lilies medicinally. It was recommended that the flowers be made into a syrup which would soothe the brain of frantic persons. The roots were regarded as an astringent and found to be a wealthy storehouse for ammonia, tannin and starch.
People who lived near mosquitoinfested swamps tried the handy lily pads and found them to be cooling poultices. Consequently they became known as a pain reliever for "skeeter bites".
Water lilies also multiply rapidly, clog ponds and streams, and stagnate running water. They provide a great breeding place for the mosquitos whose bites they help relieve.
