100th Anniversary
Of Ag Research
This year, the United States' agricultural experiment stations system is celebrating the hundredth anniversary of continuous state-supported ag research, and we in Georgia are proud to be a part of this celebration.
We have made numerous plans for Georgia's commemoration of
the anniversary of the founding of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station on Oct. 1, 1875. The Georgia General Assembly has already passed a joint resolution noting the Centennial and the importance of agricultural research to the people of Georgia. It said, "a vigorous agricultural research program is

essential in maintaining Georgia's place in the American agricultural success story, in which 5 percent of the populace can produce the food and fiber for the other 95 percent."
We intend to hold special Centennial open houses at our three Main Stations. The first one will be

Forces EPA To
New Approach
Strong resistance from Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has apparently forced the Environmental Protection Agency to clarify some of its requirements for enforcement of new federal pesticide laws as they concern farmers.
Known as the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act, the law requires that all applicators, including farmers, using certain restricted pesticides be trained and certified that they are knowledgeable in the proper use of such pesticides.
Some EPA officials in Washington, responsible for enforcement of the Act, have wanted farmers to not only be trained, but be required to pass a written or oral examination prior to certification.
In most states, including Georgia, the State Department of Agriculture is responsible for the farmer certification program, and as Georgia's Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin has refused to consider any idea of forcing a farmer to take a written or oral examination.
Instead, he has recommended and fought for a "common sense approach" which would enlist the aid of the Agricultural Extension Service and County Agricultural Agents in training farmers to meet requirements of the federal law.
In a statement this week, an EPA official in Washington, who requested he not be identified, credited Irvin's resistance and influence among other agricultural leaders as

We Salute "Bossy" The Cow During June Dairy Month
All dairy cows are not created equal. That's the conclusion of a group of dairy scientists who spent considerable time observing a typical dairy herd.
Bovine Brucellosis
Eradication Urged
Members of the U. S. Animal Health Association have urged federal authorities to step up the time schedule and federal funding of the joint federal-state cattle brucellosis eradication program.
Meeting in Washington, Association members representing regulatory veterinarians from the different states, as well as livestock industry people, expressed displeasure at the 10 year time frame
The scientists found cows to be a very undemocratic group with discrimination running rampant and a boss running the herd.
A cow establishes her rank in the herd soon after becoming a member. If she's a bossy type, her privileges will be many. She'll have plenty to eat, the best shade and get milked first.
If the cow's a quiet, docile girl, her position in the herd will be low and she'll have a rough time the rest of her days. She will have no privileges,
have to wait at meal time plus take abuse from the others when milking begins.
It's hard to say whether a cow herd

Peach Pickin' Time In Georgia
Peach harvest is swinging into high gear in the Fort Valley area with early varieties showing up pretty good. Peak harvest for middle Georgia is expected in about 10 days to two weeks for all varieties.
Georgia's 1975 peach crop is expected to total 90 million pounds, just about double of 1974, but not quite as good as 1973 when we
had 100 million pounds. These pictures, taken at Howard Lawson's peach farm at Morven,
show one of the first peach packing operations to get underway in Georgia.
After the peaches are hauled from the orchard, they are washed, brushed, sized, graded and packed. An inspector inspects the peaches as they come off the line to insure that they meet the rigid quality standards.

Dear Editor:
Enclosed is a section of the MARKET BULLETIN that I have marked to indicate space that is a waste of your time and money.
The spaces marked do not have a price for articles for sale. If the party does not know the price when the ad is submitted, they certainly won't know when they are called.
I have bought a tractor and several items of equipment through the BULLETIN and each carried the price. I have sold two tractor tires promptly in the BULLETIN with price for each; response was good.

Butterfly weed is not a collector's item. It is a plant to be left in the wilds and enjoyed by the naturalist. To say butterfly weed doesn't like to move around is an understatement because the plant would rather die than be disturbed.
Unfortunately many have not heeded the warning of conservationists and butterfly weed is quickly on its way to extinction. In fact you may have to hunt for a specimen to enjoy. A sure indication of where a plant is growing is to watch where the butterflies cluster. The brilliant orange flowers and sweet nectar naturally attract the four-winged insects and as many as ten different species have been observed on one plant at a time.
This lovely milkweed maiden can be transplanted but only with great care. Don't bother it when it is in bloom; dig plants only in fall and then be sure to take a shovel-full of dirt with the roots so that the transition will be less traumatic. It is the long tap root, so easily broken, which determines if the plant will live or die in your garden. More people kill the plant in trying to save it than succeed in moving it closer to their home.
Despite its aversion to being transplanted, butterfly weed is most tolerant of the soil in which it grows. It can be dry, moist, poor or rich but it does require sun.
As you might expect, butterfly weed did not escape the hawk-eye of the American Indians. By the time the pale faces started arriving, concoctions had already been tested in the treatment of respiratory ailments, rheumatism and fever. The most clever idea the Indians had, however, was drying the poisonous roots near the fire to make the first American chewing gum.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
100th Anniversary Irvin's Action
(Continued From Page 1)
July 16 at the Georgia Experiment Station near Griffin. Open houses will follow in the fall at the Coastal Plain Station at Tifton and the College Station in Athens. All of you are invited to any of these events.
We are planning to place historical markers at appropriate Experiment Stations spots this year, and are organizing a speakers' bureau to visit civic clubs and other groups so that some of our people can show you what the last hundred years or, specifically, the time since the Georgia Experiment Station was founded in 1888 have meant to Georgia agriculture.
A brief history of our Experiment Stations in Georgia, which is currently running as a series in our monthly publication The Paper, will be prepared for distribution to interested parties. We are also looking, as part of another Centennial project, for "Then And Now" photos depicting the changing methods of agricultural practices and technology. (If you can help, please contact us in Athens.) And we have more ideas and projects under way.
Bovine Brucellosis

set up by U.S.D.A. and urged Washington officials to study and come up with a five year maximum program for the eradication of bovine brucellosis.
Dr. J. F. Andrews, Georgia State Veterinarian and President of the Association says U.S.D.A. officials have agreed to consider and develop the outline of such a program which will be presented to the Animal Health Association executive committee during the annual convention of the American Veterinary Medical Association to be held in July in California.

I long for a cow of modern make That milks five days for leisure's
sake. That sleeps on Saturday, snores on
Sunday, Starts fresh again on every Monday.
I wish for a herd that knows the way; To wash each other day by day. That never bothers to excite us With chills of fever or mastitis.
I sigh for a new or better breed That takes less grooming and less
feed. That has the reason, with and
wisdom To use the seat and flushing system.
I pray each weekend long and clear Less work to do from year to year And cows that reach production
peak, All in a five-day working week.
I look for officials by the mob To guide the farmers at their job And show these brilliant breeders
how To propagate a five day cow!

having a "significant effect in modifying previously considered methods of compliance" with the 1972 Act.
The official indicated that Georgia's original plan to certify farmers by means of a training program may be acceptable to the agency.
On learning of the new trend in EPA's thinking, Irvin said he was extremely pleased over what he termed "a demonstration of common sense" in support of a program designed to meet the intent of Congress without burdening the farmer unnecessarily.
Dairy Month
(Continued From Page 1)
status affects her milk production. High producers are found as often at the bottom as well as at the top of the social ladder.
Bossy cows are apt to fill up faster since they have first crack at the feed. In mapping out the feeding patterns of a herd on cropped green feed, the scientists found bossy cows walked only 400 feet and filled up in about one hour.
The docile cows had to "try harder" to get a good meal because of all the abuse they had to take. These cows walked nearly 1000 feet and took more than two hours to fill up.
The quiet cows do however have one privilege. There is always a "mother-cow" in the herd to sympathize with their plight. She'll kindly lick their nose or pat their head when the going gets rough.
Today, not all dairy cows are pasture raised. In such states as California, cows are penned in an area no larger than three to five acres. Each day they are milked by farm laborers and walk only a few feet to troughs filled with grain. Their entire lives are spent grouped together.
Dairy production, however, is just as high, yet one wonders if such cows don't yearn for greener pastures.

Here is a poem that might cheer up embattled dairy farmers who are
caught in the squeeze of high costs and low prices for their milk. The author is unknown.
The poem was mailed to Mrs. Helen Dickson, 4 Patton Drive, Brunswick 31520, by her brother in Wisconsin and she forwarded it to us.

Beef Producers
Plan Fact Tour
Georgia beef cattle producers are planning a tour to Australia and New Zealand this January to study first-hand the grass-dominated cattle industries there.
The fact-finding tour, planned and sponsored by the Rural Development Center in Tifton, will begin January 5 and conclude January 26. Georgia beef producers will have an opportunity to see how their "down under" neighbors are producing cattle on grass.
Tours of research facilities and private ranches are included on the agenda. Specific information on the tour can be obtained by writing the Conference Planner, Box 1209, Tifton, Georgia 31794.
