Vet College
Serves Georgia
The primary mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Georgia is the training of veterinary practitioners. Through contract arrangements with the Southern Regional Education Board, we accept students from a five state region (Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.)
Because there are only nineteen colleges of veterinary medicine
in the United States, we are deluged with highly qualified applicants for admission. This year, we received seven applij cations from qulialified individiiuals for each of the 86 available spaces in our entering class. The average entering student has completed nearly four

years of college work, attained a superior scholastic record, and demonstrated a knowledge and background of experience with animals.
Two major factors have controlled our growth and expansion in the past several years: 1) funding for faculty and staff, 2) physical facilities. Last year the Board of Regents approved a $7 million clinical hospital addition to our present facilities. Hopefully, construction will begin this fall and will be completed by the fall of 1977. In anticipation of these expanded facilities, we increased our entering class size last fall from 76 to 86 students, by accepting ten more Georgia residents.
In addition to the professional curriculum, we offer further training to graduate veterinarians as interns or residents in our clinical departments. These veterinarians are furthering their education and experience in specialized areas as well as assisting our faculty in teaching the veterinary students.
In the fall of 1974, an animal technician training program was begun in conjunction with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton. The students in this two-year program will receive their basic instruction at ABAC and their prac-

Fertilizer Supply
Number 21
Demand Outlook
World fertilizer supply and demand may stay tight through 1975 and into 1976, according to economists with the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
They predict prices will climb but not as rapidly as in 1974.
Nitrogen fertilizer is the most widely used in the world, and its small stockpile is not likely to expand in the next two years.
Phosphate should be more plentiful than nitrogen in 1975 and 1976, provided no problems hit the phosphate rock supply.
Potash could also be more available this year and next, if idle capacity in Canada, the major producer, can be developed quickly.
In the United States, USDA economists say farmers may pay 10 to 15 per cent more per ton for fertilizer during the '75 planting season than they did in the last months of 1974. This increase, however, does not match the doubling in prices that followed removal of price controls in late 1973.

Georgia's Big Sweet Onions
Arrive At Atlanta Market
Those big, sweet, delicious Georgia onions, so in demand by anyone who has ever enjoyed the delicate flavor, began arriving at the Atlanta State Farmers Market last week.
The only difference in this year's first arrivals is the sack in which they're packaged. Previously they have always said "Vidalia Onions" and as a result this is what most of us have learned to call them. This year, however, Tattnall countians, who produce just as many of the hybrid variety, have developed their own sack which calls the onion a "Glennville".
Although there are only about 200 combined acres in Toombs and Tattnall that produce the large, almost

grapefruit size, delicacy, about 80,000 50 pound bags are shipped throughout the state and nation. Many people start calling the Market early in May wanting to know if the onions have arrived yet.
So, don't be confused by the sack this year. Whether it says "Vidalia" or "Glennville" or regardless of what you call them, they are still one of Georgia's finest and most famous crops.

Calico, Squares, Triangles; Let's Have A "Quilting Bee"
Calico triangles and polka dot squares pieced in intricate patterns can be the beginning of an heirloom
quilt. Too many people, however, stop with the quilt top and leave the quilting to others.
They visualize huge quilting
frames with 7 or 8 women sewing tediously with needle in hand for months to finish one quilt. The truth is, however, that an individual can do a quilt in less time than it took to piece the top.
The ease in which quilting is accomplished is dependent on choosing the right frame for your needs and the job to be done. If you plan to do it the old-fashion way, a large frame will be needed. If, however, your
space is limited or you plan to do all
the quilting yourself, a small oval frame or lap frame is more appropriate.
The traditional quilting frame and popular old standby can rest on kit-
chen chairs. You will need two lengths of 1" x 2" knot-free boards as long as the width of your quilt and two lengths as long as the length of your quilt; four 3" C-clamps to hold
the boards together and strips of ticking or denim to cover all four length of wood, a staple gun and four straight back chairs.
First, you should cover all four lengths of wood with the material, overlapping the edges, then stapling or tacking it down every two inches. Cover the top rung of the chair with a towel to protect them and place the shorter boards across the backs of each pair of chairs. Lay the longer boards across the tops of the shorter boards and place C-clamps at each corner. Tie the corners of the frame to the chairs with old nylon stockings to hold it firm.
When not in use, the frame can be dismantled and stored easily. If a

Two quick, great ways to prepare the Sweet Georgia Onions from Glennville and Vidalia:
Prepare a thin pancake batter, dip onion rings in the batter and drop into hot fat for several minutes until golden brown, making the best fried onion rings ever.
Peel and core Vidalia or Glennville Sweet Georgia Onions; fill core with butter, wrap in foil and place on grill while cooking your steak or in oven if you prefer, about 30 minutes (a little longer on the grill).
BAKED SOYBEANS (serves 6)
2 cups soybeans Cold water 1/8 Ib. salt
pork or 3 tbsps. bacon drippings 2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
2 tbsps. molasses 2 tbsps. minced
onions 2 tbsps. brown
sugar (opt.) 1 cup hot water Boiling water
to cover
Soak beans in cold water overnight. In morning, drain water off. Put beans in bean pot (this would be a good recipe to cook in a Crock Pot). Score the salt pork and bury in the beans with the rind side up. Mix the salt, mustard, molasses, onion, brown sugar, and about a cup of hot water and stir un til well mixed. Pour over beans and pork. Add boiling water to cover and bake at 275F for 6 to 8 hours, adding more water when needed. The last hour uncover and do not add water. Turn pork right side up to brown.

Grass Cutting Season Approaches,
Out Of State Wanted
Beware Dangerous Lawn Mowers
Spring ushers in warm weather and the beginning of grass-cutting season. Today, grass-cutting usually involves high speed, rotary power mowers. In fact,
about 90 percent of all power lawn mowers manufactured each year are rotary mowers.
Vet College
(Continued From Page 1)
tical clinical' experience in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
The training these students acquire will allow them to perform as assistants, nurses, and technicians for practicing veterinarians. By this means, we hope to provide highly trained manpower that will help the veterinary practitioner expand his ability to serve the public. Moreover, the availability of animal technicians may result in fewer large, multipleman practices, thus freeing some veterinarians for expansion to underserved areas.
The College is also involved in graduate teaching programs that provide advanced academic training for veterinarians and others who will eventually serve as teachers and researchers. The research programs in the College are many and varied, covering both basic and applied approaches to disease problems in companion and food-producing animals. Unfortunately, funding for research of any type has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Our biggest problems have been in securing funding for food animal disease research. Because of the tremendous costs involved in experimentation on large animals, few agencies are able or willing to underwrite meaningful long-term studies. It is much easier to attract federal or private funding for research projects using laboratory animals as models for human related disease.
We sincerely need the support and cooperation of the livestock producer groups of the State and region to help secure funding for badly needed food animal research.
The College also provides services to the citizens of the State through
the operation of the Diagnostic Aid and Assistants Laboratories at Tifton and- Athens. These laboratories are operated under contract by, and in conjunction with, the Georgia Department of Agriculture. They provide diagnostic assistance to veterinary practitioners and their clients throughout the State.
The College of Veterinary Medicine desires to serve the needs of the citizens of the State of Georgia through training of veterinary practitioners and their assistants, research on animal disease problems, and diagnostic service to the practitioner and his clients. We seek your advice and counsel on how we may better serve your needs in any of these areas.
FOOD IS BIG BUSINESS
Food is the nation's largest business. Add up all of the workers on the farm, in processing, transporting, retailing and restaurant food services and you will find one out of every five workers in the U.S. Farming itself employs 4.3 million workers. That's as many as the combined employment of transportation, steel and automobiles.
This is where the danger lies. Blades of these rotary mowers can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour and can hurl objects 50 feet or more. Therefore, home owners should exercise extra care when using this modern, helpful-but quite dangerous-piece of equipment.
There are four major accident patterns associated with power lawn mowers:
1. Contact with the rotating blade This usually occurs when the victim is clearing the discharge chute of grass clippings, especially when the grass is wet; when the victim adjusts the machine without turning it off; or when the machine hits an obstacle such as a rock and the victim's foot slips under the housing.
2. Propelled objects-- Wire, rocks, and twigs can be shot out either through the discharge chute or from under the housing. Many of the victims in these cases are innocent bystanders.
3. Overturning This occurs primarily with riding mowers which are used on steep slopes or embankments. The victims can come in contact with the blades or sustain injuries during the fall.
4. Mower running over the vic tim This often occurs when a riding mower or garden tractor is being driven in reverse; the victims are usually young children who, unknown to the operator of the mower, were in the vicinity of the mower which was operating. Another frequent accident pattern occurs when the operator pulls the mower backward over his/her own foot.
Before operating your mower-especially if it is a new one-thoroughly acquaint yourself with the operating manual. Pay extra attention to safety instructions.
Above all, when operating a power mower, keep your mind on what you are doing at all times!
Don't Overbuy
Garden Seeds
Home vegetable gardening is well underway for 1975 seemingly having gained momentum from last year's popularity. Why? Growing inflation, high food prices, and a backto-nature trend.
Last year, there was some shortage of certain vegetable seed due to the sudden demand. But, based on last year's demand, the seed industry made adjustments on supplies, so there should be plenty to meet the need this year.
But consumers should be careful not to over-purchase seed for their gardens. A few seeds go a long way, so have in mind what your actual needs will be before buying more seed than you need. This will save you money and eliminate waste.
Your seed dealer can give you advice on how much seed (or how many bedding plants) you will need to plant a garden the size you want, or check with your local extension agent.

"Honeysuckle on My Mind" seems to Georgia's theme song in spring. Lush green leafy vines with white and yellow flowers filling the spring air with sweet fragrance have come to life after sleeping through the winter.
It's easy to say nice things about honeysuckle if it's in somebody else's yard - but if the tender ten drils are weaving themselves around your beans or climbing your rose bush, all you can think of is KILL!
Hall's honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica halliana) is primarily the invader on which our ill will con centrates. It may be hard to con ceive but before 1752 we were a country without honeysuckle. It was brought here from southern Russia as an ornamental vine and ob viously acclimated itself well to the new environment (L japonica was imported from Japan.)
It almost goes without saying that honeysuckle is a hardy plant, not susceptible to disease and easily grown. Now if you can conquer your prejudice one minute you might discover the hundreds of other honeysuckle species that are still grown as attractive ornamentals and possess all the favorable qualities of the species.
There is bush honeysuckle, red honeysuckle, everblooming honeysuckle and at least 20 more that are frequently grown for en joyment rather than nuisance.
Not all honeysuckle varieties are fragrant, but of course, Hall's is. Some determined gardeners have planted Hall's honeysuckle on ar ched trellises, carefully watching for volunteer vines and pulling or cutting them as soon as they ap pear. In this way they can enjoy the heavenly fragrance of the vine and at the same time have a beautiful garden planting.
If you have ever tasted the sweet nectar in the honeysuckle bloom you have no doubt wondered if the plant could be used productively for human consumption. Regretably research has not revealed any food value for common honeysuckle. Tatarian honeysuckle does produce small fruits from which a tasty jam can be made but birds usually go af ter the cherry-red berries as soon as they appear.
The only way to completely eliminate honeysuckle is to pull up

Pressing Dried Flowers
Inexpensive, Easy To Do
Pressed framed flowers are selling like crazy in department stores, and the price tags are equally wild. So if you're short on cash, try making your own.
Squares, Triangles; A "Quilting Bee"
(Continued From Page 1) quilt is on the frame, it can be leaned against a wall or raised to the ceiling by pulleys.
An oval quilting hoop on a stand is excellent for individual use and works quite well with small and large quilts. Start quilting in the middle of
sx
the quilt and work outward in all directions.
A modern day version of the community quilter is more satisfactory than the old standby since the stretchers have a ratchet at one end so the quilt can be rolled tightly.
The "quilt-as-you-go" frame is gaining popularity since it is portable and the burden of handling the entire
quilt is eliminated. It is suited to quilts that are made in squares and sewn together after quilting for the finished product.
While there are still many groups of people who gather together for a "quilting bee", others prefer to do all the stitching themselves on their quilt. By selecting a quilting frame to suit the job, finishing what you start can be more enjoyable than you imagined. the roots -- every single one of them. A heavily infested four foot square piece of ground can yield as much as 100 feet of honeysuckle vine and root. Spraying with silvex will help control the unruly wan derer if you prefer not to pull vines til Christmas.
English herbalists recommended a honeysuckle tea for headache relief - perhaps they too had problems with the troublesome vine.

It doesn't take much money and/or a flower garden. Some of the best flowers grow wild in the woods and along roadsides.
Wet flowers tend to fade, so do your picking after the dew has risen on a warm, dry day. Flowers with flat blooms like pansies and violets are easiest to press, but experiment with anything that catches your eye. Don't forget about foliage. Try pressing ferns, interesting grasses and colorful leaves such as coleus.
Press the flowers within a halfhour after you pick them. The idea is to let absorbent paper draw moisture from the petals. An old telephone book makes a fine press, but glossy paper won't work. If you don't have a spare directory, use several layers of facial tissue, paper towels or newspaper.
To press flat flowers, simply lay them face down on the paper. With three-dimensional blooms like tulips or daffodils, take the flower apart and press each petal separately. Once you've got the flowers between paper, put bricks on top to increase pressure.
Drying takes anywhere from several days to several weeks, depending on the flower. Make sure petals are completely dry before arranging your picture. Otherwise, they may fade or get moldy after they're framed. To test flowers for dryness, lift them carefully from the paper. They're ready for framing if they lift without sticking and are per-
fectly flat and crisp. There are two types of frames on
the market. With one kind, the glass drops in from the back. With the other, the glass slides in on one side.
Besides a frame you need tweezers, toothpicks and a piece of fabric for the background. Try taffeta, crepe, satin, linen or any fabric with body. Pastels, neutrals and black are the most effective colors. Black velvet is a traditional background, but the pile can press holes in delicate flowers. Instead, use black felt to get
a velvet look. You also need some sort of pad-
ding to put under the fabric. Cotton batting, a thin sheet of foam rubber or polyester fleece interfacing will do the trick. Lay the padding over the frame's cardboard insert and place the fabric on top of the padding.
Using toothpicks or tweezers, arrange the flowers on the fabric. Place the largest bloom in the center and arrange smaller flowers around it.
Since glue adds damaging moisture to the picture, use pressure to hold the arrangement in place. Here's how.
Remove the glass from the frame and put the glass on top of your arrangement. Carefully slide the whole unit cardboard, padding, fabric, flowers and glass off the table and drop the frame over it. Now turn the framed arrangement upside down and put it back on the table. Fill the back of the frame with cardboard to press the flowers firmly against the glass. Secure the cardboard with masking tape.
Finally, seal the back of the frame with brown paper. Sealing keeps the arrangement airtight and helps preserve the color.

Food Preservation
Seminars Coining
The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service is again conducting a series of food preservation seminars called Conserve-ARama.
These seminars are designed to give consumers the latest information and techniques on "do-it-yourself home food preservation. Seven exhibit areas will be featured to give the public up-to-date pointers on canning, freezing, drying, how to make jams, jellies, preserves and pickles. In addition, one exhibit will specifically emphasize food safety as it relates to preserving in the home, and another will include consumer cues (how to select produce to preserve, nutrition labeling and storage life of food.)
In addition to "live" demonstrations home economists and food scientists will be on hand at each exhibit to discuss proper methods of preserving foods.
Dates and locations are as follows: June 10, Walton EMC, Snellville; June 11, Salem Village, Conyers; June 12, Farmers Market Exhibit Hall, Forest Park; June 17, Market Square - Winn Dixie, Douglasville; June 18, Cumberland Mall; June 19, Lenqx Square; July 1, Columbia Mall; July 2, Perimeter Mall; July 15, North DeKalb Mall; July 16, West End Mall; Greenbriar Mall;

No-tillage Crops
On The Upswing
No-tillage row crop acreage in Georgia increased dramatically in 1974 and is expected to increase again this year, according to the Soil Conservation Service.
No-tillage is the method of planting one crop directly in the residue of a previous crop without mechanical cultivation.
The practice has proven of greatest value in the northern part of the state. The Soil Conservation Service estimates that 65,000 to 70,000 acres of row crops, mainly corn and soybeans, were produced using notillage in 1974, compared to an estimated 39,000 acres in 1973.
