Careful Planning
Yields Dividends
Price and income patterns over the past few months have been disappointing to farmers and consumers. During 1974, Georgia farmers poured over $2.2 billion of crops and livestock into marketing channels. The 12 percent gain in income for the year was exceeded by a 16 percent rise in the level of farming costs. Similarly, the Consumer Price Index rose faster than consumer incomes. As cost increases eroded income gains, both farmers and consumers were caught up in a squeeze.
Recent declines in wholesale prices offer a glimmer of hope that
=1*1 costs may be manISageable in the IS months ahead. Is Nevertheless, a :;;K great number of
uncertainties in fc : the present si-
tuation are soSfurces of coni|'j|cern in planning. Flexibility and alertness may be the key words for effective farm management this year. In April the parity ratio (purchasing power of

farm products) stood at 93 up one point from March but...down from 112 a year earlier. Prices of farm production goods eased upward again during April rather than holding as they had the last couple of months, but farm product prices also showed some strength during April.
Already there is evidence that farmers are reading and reacting to the signals from the market. Declines in price quotations for delivery of crops in the fall of 1975 were reflected in the reductions of farmers planting intentions from the January to March reports.
Even with the apparent reductions in intended acreages of corn and soybeans, good weather and yields would still provide sufficient supplies to put further downward pressure on prices. This prospect suggests caution on the pan of farmers in developing 1975 production systems. The size of the 1975 crops will ultimately determine price levels.
There is nothing now in the demand picture that promises to override the potential adequacy of

Go. Soybean Yield
May Win National
The state soybean yield record of 77.7 bushels set by James L. Brown of Telfair County will apparently be the nation's top yield for 1974.
A spokesman for the American Soybean Association said recently that all states that conduct yield contests had reported their top producers. None exceeded Brown's mark.
It is unlikely that a higher yield will be reported, although it remains a possibility.
Brown's record yield, which won the Georgia Soybean Yield Contest, was produced on a 6-acre plot. On his total of about 200 acres of

May is a busy time for gardeners.
It is the time to plant, spray, prune and fertilize if you plan to enjoy a bountiful vegetable garden, healthy shrubs and trees, and have flowers in
bloom til frost. The cool nights and warm days of
May are ideal for tender seedlings to get established for the hot summer days ahead. Sow zinnias, nastur-
tiums, salvia, marigolds, cosmos and other tender annuals and get your summer flowering bulbs such as caladiums, dahlias, tuberoses and cannas in the ground.
One of the most important gar-
dening tasks in May is spraying for insects. Some garden pests are still in the larvae stage while others are just starting their attack on your plants. Hit them now before they get a

The U. Ga. research team headed by Worley will study the effects of pruning. Research with bearing trees is a time-consuming process, because when a bearing limb is pruned, it will take four to five years to regenerate.
Several pruning variables will be studied by Worley. He will try tests with different amounts of wood removal, selective limb pruning, and a particularly ingenious method of conserving land use, the "temporary" stand.

There has been considerable interest in greenhouse tomato production in

Georgia during the past few years. Much of this has been due to glowing ad-

vertisements and popular articles suggesting this type of production as a part

time effort to supplement the family income or as a route to handsome profits.

This is not a business for amateurs or for persons with a full time job who expect

to spend a couple of hours a day working in the greenhouse.

Dear Editor: In a recent article in the BULLETIN by Mr. Foy Gilbert, en-
titled Georgia Catfish Mighty Good, he mentioned that the Stokes Fish Company was processing fish in Quitman. Unfortunately, the processing plant has closed, because they, do not have fish to process. The company does plan to' reopen the Quitman processing unit when sufficient 1 pound and up fish are available (at least 50,000 pounds). It will probably be fall before the unit reopens.
If anyone has fish which need to be processed, they should contact Mr. Henry Carr, Brooks County Extension Chairman, P. O. Box 510, Quitman, Georgia 31643 (phone 912/263-4103). Mr. Carr is assisting the farmers and the processing unit by scheduling the fish to be processed.

Tussie-Mussies are probably the most traditional and attractive of all herb decorations and adornments. They are part of Olde England and played an integral part in all celebrations, the most notable being Elizabeth It's coronation.
Besides their aesthetic qualities, tussie-mussies were also used to ward off unfavorable smells and odors. Their presence in the sickroom was thought to be conducive to a speedy recovery.
According to the period in history, different herbs were preferred in making the tussiemussies. The 15th Century for example was partial to marigolds since the flower which "dedicated its beauty to sun" was a symbol of happiness and sunshine.
Sprays of southernwood were tucked into a bouquet before going to church as they were thought to make one more reverent; white and gold flowers of camomile or sprigs of sage were evidence of wisdom and the serenity of long years.
To make your own tussie-mussie choose small, delicate flowers. Small roses, pinks, forget-me-nots, violets are good selections. Remember, a tussie-mussie is delicate and refined like a miniature oil painting. Avoid large, cumbersome flowers.
Start with a central flower, such as a rose-bud or several small flowers tied together. Next arrange a circle of flowers or alternate leaves and flowers around the center.
Bind the stems as you go. Finish the tussie-mussie with a round of leaves and then slide a paper doily or stiff net up the bound stem,

Fertilizer Grades
Fertilizers are sold by their grade, such as 6-12-12 or 5-10-15. These numbers refer to the percent nitrogen, phosphorus and potash, respectively. For example, 100 pounds of 6-12-12 contains 6 pounds of nitrogen, 12 pounds of phosphorus and 12 pounds of potash. The other 70 pounds are chemicals used by the plant and conditioners to keep the fertilizer from becoming lumpy.

Careful Planning Pla nting

Agricultural

(Continued From Page 1)
'supplies of farm products. Until the economy turns around and global purchasing power increases, there is only a small population push on domestic demand growth.
Perhaps the brightest element of the farm situation is the possibility that costs now may be leveling off. The index of prices paid by farmers rose three points in April but actually declined one point in March. Unless energy costs set off a round of price rises, farm production goods should become more readily available.
The classic short-run supplydemand conditions now prevail in agriculture and this leads to quick price shifts from small or temporary changes in either supply or demand. Producers may find it more advantageous than ever to watch market conditions closely and to act quickly on favorable price movements.
Again this year, good bookkeeping and careful planning will yield dividends. Production systems must reflect the adjustments needed to keep total costs under control.
As the price of human effort (wages) rises, its cost gets built into the activities necessary to generate and distribute our food supplies. It is unlikely that producers or consumers will experience real cost reductions this year.

times. The number of failures among
those attempting this type of production in Georgia has been very high due to the many production and marketing problems that have arisen.
To those who become enchanted with the idea of growing greenhouse tomatoes for a profit the following is suggested: 1. Make a thorough study of
production procedures and problems and marketing possibilities before any decision is made. 2. Check with your local County Extension Agent for details of problems that have been encountered in Georgia. 3. Investigate as many sources of greenhouses and supplies as
Bossi^e. the decision is made to enter this type of production, begin small. 5. Keep accurate records on costs and labor involved. 6. Make every effort to grow a quality product.

Food Seminar
The first of several regional seminars on food supplies to feed an expanding population will be held in Atlanta May 15 - 16. The seminars are sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in cooperation with the Fernbank Science Center.
CONTROL WEEDS, INSECTS AND DISEASES Cultivate only often enough and deep enough to keep out weeds and grass.

azaleas indicate peony scale which if
untreated will affect new growth this summer. Control by spraying the entire plant with malathion. This method will also control lace bugs on azaleas and pyracantha.
Spider mites on the underside of leaves are detectable now and should
be sprayed with Cygon. Damaged dogwood trees are very
prone to dogwood borers. The insects use an injured spot as a front door to the heart of the tree. The best remedy is prevention by keeping the lawn mower away from the trunk of
the tree. Bagworm larvae (caterpillar) are
feeding on junipers. They are extremely small and are covered with a protective cocoon. Spray with Cygon
or Diazinon. Leaf gall on azaleas and sasanquas
which causes leaves to swell abnormally should be removed and-
burned. Fusiform rust on pines is visible
this month. Look for an orange powdery material on trunks and limbs. Small limbs should be removed to protect infection of the entire tree. There is no cure for canker on large trees, and removal of the whole tree is necessary to halt the spread of rust to other healthy trees.
Spring-planted decidious trees and shrubs may need pruning now if new shoots seem weak or plants show no sign of growth. Terminal growth of annuals should be pinched out to make bushy plants and encourage
formation of additional flower buds. This also extends the flowering period later into the .summer.
Your summer vegetable garden should be finished in May. Stake tomato plants and pole beans and
thin seedlings. House plants can safely be moved
outside now but don't put them in direct sun. A semi-shaded spot will prevent sun scald to tender foliage.
Mother's day potted plants can be planted in the garden after the blooms have faded. Hydrangeas, azaleas, begonias and caladiums will do best in a shaded area of the garden while geraniums should have full sun.

Southern Pine
Beetle Spreading
The southern pine beetle is still wreaking havoc in Georgia.
A recent survey shows 79 Georgia counties are now included in the southern pine beetle outbreak area. This is an increase of nine counties over a July 1974 survey.
Infested areas include practically all of the Piedmont counties in Georgia, the mountain counties of Northeast Georgia, four counties in the Savannah area, and five counties south of Columbus.

I'm sending you two plants that were brought in a load of topsoil that I would like to have identified pr lease. Mrs. T. Gt ., Rome.
We sure would like to identify your plants but you enclosed them in some plastic wrap and by the time we got them, they weren't there. Next time, please ma'm, place them between two sheets of blotting paper or paper towel and arrange cardboard panels over them to prevent damage in the mail and we will be able* t*o *id*entify.
Frogs are in my wet weather pond and I would like to get rid of them. How? W. M., Rossville.

Well, Game and Fish folks say the most effective means is to drain the

pond and/or fill it in. with dirt. That, as a matter of fact, is about the only

method we could find. You can contact your Soil Conservation Service

for assistance with this.

I need instructions on constructing a pine pole peeling machine for use in making fence post. Mrs. K. M., Milledgeville

The Forestry folks sent you a pamphlet which should help. Another way that you can peel the bark off of the post is to take a sharp hoe and bend the blade flat and peel the bark* w* i*th*i,t.
Can you give me any information on the vegetable "Dasheen"? Is it available today? No Name.

No seed houses that we could find carry this today. And, we could have written you about "other things" if we had your name and address.
