Georgia Farm
Bureau Women
Farm Bureau is the worlds largest general farm organization. Membership in Georgia is nearing 100,000 farm families united to analyze their problems and to promote, protect and represent the economic, social and educational interests of farm people.
Farm Bureau is a family organisation where men and women work
together as equal partners to implement the po1 icies as set forth by the members. Through family membership, women share the full privileges as well as the responsibilities for the success of the total Farm Bureau program. A women's committee is the organization structure recommended

for more involvement by the women. The purpose of this committee is to work on the entire Farm Bureau program with emphasis on those activities particularly suited to the talents and interests of women. Women are active in such areas as safety, health, commodity promotion, citizenship projects, local affairs and others.
Our state goal for 1975 is to motivate Farm B.ureau women to greater interest and involvement in our organization. Our aims are to equip ourselves to be better leaders through information and education; to help achieve effective legislative results; and to improve farmerconsumer understanding.
Statewide projects include the Georgia Homemaker program. Farm Bureau scholarship program, June Dairy Month Recipe Contest, Peanut Princess Contest and the annual Georgia Rural Health conference.
Information and applications for the scholarships are now available at all county Farm Bureau offices. The program is to recognize and to assist worthy and outstanding high school seniors who plan to pursue a profession in the field of agribusiness or home economics. Four scholarships of $500 each will be awarded. Applications must be mailed by May 30.
At the present time we are in the

N.C. Firm Fined
For Illegal Seed
A judgement of $ 1200 has ended a Federal Seed Act case against McNair Seed Company of Laurinburg, N.C.
The USDA reported the firm made six illegal shipments of agricultural seed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Virginia. The shipments, involving sorghum, rye, cotton, and soybean seed, were found to be falsely labeled as to percentage of germination and one shipment had not been tested before interstate shipment as required by law.
"Big s n outdoors"
"Big As All Outdoors", a program that takes a look at agribusiness, forestry and environmental progress in 1975 will be held May 7 two miles west of Winder on Highway 29 at the Johns-Manville plant. The event, sponsored by the Seaboard Coast Line and Louisville and Nashville Railroads, is open to the public.

Flowers aren't the only thing that come out in the spring, so do the termites!

Warm days are usually when termites most often swarm. This is a good indica-

tion that some of the little "undercover agents" may be hard at work on the

wood in, under, or around your home.

Although flights or swarms of ter-

For EEE, WEE, VEE
The first three-component vaccine to protect houses from eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE), western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) has been licensed by the USDA.
Equine encephalomyelitis, also known as horse sleeping sickness, is a virus disease of horses that is transmitted by mosquitoes and known to affect other animals and man. Annual vaccination against this disease complex is recommended because one or another strain may occur seasonally.
The new vaccine uses only killed virus components and can be administered safely without extra restrictions. Previously, combination vaccines using killed virus were available only for EEE and WEE; immunity against VEE had been provided only by modified live virus (MLV) vaccines.

Water Plantain is native to the United States but is found most abundantly in the eastern states. Shallow ponds and swamps are the natural home for the aquatic perennial, either standing erect or floating on top of the water. Sometimes it is found flourishing in wet ground beside a pond.
The most common species in this family is the arrowhead (Saggitaria latifolia) which is characterized by its large pointed leaves. During the summer, flowers appear in groups df three. The inflorescence is borne on a stout stem one to three feet tall.
The edible underground stems have a high starch content and are edible. In fact, the men in the Lewis and Clark Expedition substituted these rhizomes for bread and lived on them throughout their travels. The roots can be boiled or roasted and eaten as you would potatoes.

Farm Women
(Continued From Page 1) midst of the recipe contest. All entries are due May 1. The purpose of this Dairy Dessert contest is to encourage greater use of dairy products throughout the year by emphasizing new and different recipes. The contest is open to any user of dairy products in Georgia.
Cook-offs will be held at the county level this year and recipes may be pre-prepared for district and state contests. Judging will be by a recipe scorecard and sampling the finished product.
Complete information is available at all county Farm Bureau offices and also at the office of your extension home economist. The prizes offered were previously announced in this paper.
Farming is a family affair; women are just as interested in improving farm conditions as the men are. There are many jobs to be done and farm bureau provides a place for all farm women to become more effective.

with termites, it is often difficult and usually costly to control them. A careful examination by a welltrained, reputable pest control operator is needed to determine the extent of the damage and the measures needed to prevent further damage.
However, if you do have termites, don't panic. Termites usually work slowly. Your house will not be ruined or in a state of collapse if you do find termites present. Do not be rushed into hiring someone to do the exterminating job who is not efficient or trustworthy.
Use the same care when purchasing termite treatment that you would use when purchasing any other service for your property. Get an estimate of the cost of the job and a contract. Read the contract carefully before you sign it and make sure it covers the entire job.
AH licensed pest control operators in Georgia must have the vehicle marked clearly with the firm name and LPCO (licensed pest control operator) number. Each operator should also have an identification card stating that he is a registered operator. If you are unsure of the company or have questions, contact the Entomology Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street, SW, Atlanta 30334.
Rye Test
(Continued From Page 1) V
This picture shows the difference between the unadapted northern rye varieties (front) and the adap ted southern varieties (back).
Each year, Morey and Morris collect rye seed samples from state seed inspectors and plant them at Tifton and Beltsville. The objective is to check the accuracy of variety labeling in this crop. The heads of seventeen different state seed labs contributed samples for the 1975 test.
"Tifton is chosen as a test site because Georgia is a large producer of rye," said Morris at the test plot. "Rye is a large crop here primarily for winter forage, not for grain." Most of the varieties checked in the test were Southern varieties.
The 1975 test marked the fourth year that trueness-to-variety trials were run at the Tifton experiment station. However, Dr. Morey has been conducting these tests for the Ga. Department of Agriculture for over 15 years.

Appoints Members
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has appointed eight members and their alternates to the Georgia Peach Industry Committee, which recommends regulations to be issued under the federal marketing agreement and order covering the handling of fresh peaches grown in Georgia.

Members and their respective alternates are:

Press Mechanism
Needed For Gin
The Georgia Agrirama is searching for the press mechanism for a two story (drop door), double box turntable press for a press assembly for a pre-1900 cotton gin.
Restoration has just been completed on the bale press structure and the 1896 Lummus cotton gin, both of which are housed in an authentic reproduction of a pre-1900 cotton gin house. Both the gin and bale press are to be operated by steam power, and the press mechanism will complete the press assembly enabling the Agrirama to begin cotton gin operations.
The press mechanism includes a master pulley, master gear, main bed plate, main pressure plate, five inch screw and other minor parts.
Anyone who has information on a press mechanism which could be salvaged off an old press should write the Georgia Agrirama, P. O. Box Q, Tifton, Georgia or call 912/3829416 or 386-3344.
The Georgia Agrirama will be a recreated farm and rural village of the late 1 800's carrying out day-today activities of that period. Scheduled opening date for the Agrirama is July, 1976 in conjunction with the national bicentennial celebration.
Georgia Hay Day
