Fire Ant Program
Last week, Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz announced that as of June 30, 1975, the U.S.D.A. would cut-off all funds for the control of fire ants in Georgia and other southern states.
This was an extremely shocking and disappointing decision to
me and for thousands of Georgia farmers who have been plagued by the vicious, profit robbing pest for almost 20 years.
The imported fire ant is a serious pest to people, animals and crops in the South. The ants build large mounds generally in open sunshiny areas, the most valuable land on a farm. They have a vicious nature and powerful sting. They directly damage some crops, attack and kill newborn livestock and cause farmers loss of valuable time during seeding, fertilizing and harvesting crops. In addition, it is difficult to hire any workers to go into fields inhabited by fire ants. The ants are not just a farm pest. Highway departments, railroad companies, homeowners, cemeteries, parks, school grounds and golf courses, are all victims of this ant who will attack instead of scatter when disturbed. The Georgia Legislature and the Georgia Department of Agriculture have realized the seriousness of this pest and have worked for years on its control and eradication. However, these efforts have been seriously hampered in recent years by the Environmental Protection Agency, which, it seems to me, oftentimes loses sight of whom or what it is protecting. Such stringent and ridiculous regulations on the use of pesticides to control the ant have been stipulated by the EPA that control measures have become less effective. This is the reason Butz gives for stopping the matching fund program. I agree with U.S.D.A. that the EPA has hurt the fire ant control program. However, I do not believe we should just throw up our hands and say "We quit! If you won't let us do it our way we won't try at all!" I believe that we must continue our struggle against the spread of the fire ant the best way we can, working with farmers,, homeowners, entomologists and the EPA in finding

Dear Editor:
For the past eight years I have been working on a book on "The People who Knew Georgia". I would appreciate hearing from any of your readers who would like to contribute mater ial (which will be acknowledged) for my book.
M. L. Kingry 359 Karen Drive Alpharetta, Georgia 30201 (Editor's note: Last week we featured the Arum Family in our "What Is" column. Three of the species mentioned, JackIn-The-Pulpit, Skunk Cabbage and Dragonroot, are not edible but have been considered medicinally useful in herbal reme dies. The rhizomes or tubers contain Calcium Oxalate which creates the same sensation as dumb cane (Diffenbachia) when eaten. If consumed in large amounts this can be fatal.)

MOW SAFELY
When you mow with a "rider" model, go up and down lawn slopes. That way, you reduce your chances of tipping over, says Cecil Hammond, engineer with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Ser vice.
CANNING TIP
If you're running short on canning jars, you better head for the freezer or dry your produce. Commercial jars -- the kind jelly and mayonnaise come in -- are not suitable for canning. Commercial jars tend to crack when heated and aren't likely to give safe seals, says Cathy Sigman, food specialist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Ex tension Service.

(Vital 9s The
Family?
There are about a dozen species in the Xyridaceae family but there is only one that is found in Georgia The rest are tropical.
The common yellow-eyed grass is found in wet fields and bogs. Narrow linear leaves cluster around a leafless flowering stalk which is topped by a head of small yellow flowers which appear in early sum mer. There is no known use for yellow-eyed grass.

The lack of federal interest and the loss of federal funding will make these efforts impossible to the point that we will see the fire ant spread through the entire state and nation.
Highest Honors Awarded 4-H'ers
Outstanding accomplishment in over-all club work has earned two young Georgians one of the highest honors in 4-H. Barbara Ellard of Clarke County and Jim Burns of Spalding County are the 1975 state winners in achievement.
"A win in achievement is one of Georgia's ultimate 4-H honors," said Tommy Walton, assistant director of 4-H youth with the Cooperative Ex tension Service, who announced the winners. "Unlike other projects, which require outstanding work in a single area, the achievement program calls for excellent performance in all p, ijects."

Georgia Honey
On The Decline
Honey production in Georgia is down. There was a three percent decrease in the number of bee colonies in Georgia in 1974 (161,000) over the 1973 total (166,000).
Honey producers received an average price of 49.6 cents per pound in 1974 compared to 43.6 cents per pound in 1973.
Adverse weather conditions which kept bees from feeding on flowering plants and trees is blamed largely for the decline.
Homecoming at Abraham Bald win Agricultural College, April 5 and 6, offered additional ex citement with the Rodeo Club hosting the 6th International Rodeo Association sanctioned rodeo at the college arena. Bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, girl's barrel racing, steer wrestling and girl's goat tieing were among the many events featured.
CROUTON IDEAS Next time you make croutons, try the unusual. Use unsweetened puffed corn, puffed wheat or bite-sized shredded wheat, corn or rice.

Can I cut pines and treat them for fence posts on my farm? F. W., Woodbury
Mr. Paul Butts of the Forestry Commission mailed you some in formation on this. Posts should be peeled soon after cutting to speed drying and all the bark and inner bark should be removed in order to get the best chemical penetration possible.

I need some information for a research project. What year did the first wholesale feed dealer open in Atlanta -- feed for dairy cows?
W. C., Eatonton
This could prove rather difficult to answer. Very few records have been kept as to when the first wholesale feed dealer opened. The Atlanta Historical Society's records show the first to advertise was Seago & Ab bott, north east corner of Mitchell and Forsyth streets in 1852. Livery stables, grist mills, and blacksmith shops were always found in a new community as well as the "general" merchandise store. The livery stable as well as the general store usually carried feeds and hay for horses and livestock due to the fact this was the principle means of transportation and food.

of seed. That is one reason it is im portant to read your label before buying. What appears to be a "good" price may not be any better than a more expensive variety when you study the tag for germination results and for content.
Testing Seed Any farmer who wants his seed tested before planting should seed a sample to the department as soon as possible. There is no charge to far mers for this service. Germination percentage is a label requirement on all farm seed. It's determined by growing seed samples in special growth chambers at the Georgia Department of Agriculture seed lab. The number of seeds that produce normal sprouts is used to determine the germination percen tage assigned to that lot. The germination test date also is required on seed labels. If the test was made more than nine months ago, the germination percentage may not be as high as the label shows. It is also illegal to offer seed for sale if the test is more than nine months old.
