Farmers' Role
In Changing Times
America's agricultural role is constantly changing. This year in particular with the decrease of crop production in many states due to bad weather conditions we find American farmers in the position of playing a larger role in deciding the outcome of market prices.
The price of soybeans and corn, and consequently the
price of meat, will pivot around the decisions of the farmers who were able to produce these commodities. With the influential role Georgia farmers will play in shaping the fate of America's agricultural future there will be only room for judicious marketing. These facts present a new challenge to agriculture. Often we are made to wonder where the knowledge, and manpower, will

come from to meet these challenges and help conquer agricultural problems in the FFA. This organization consists of high school students enrolled in Vocational Agriculture. It provides a springboard for students interested in the field of agriculture to receive on the spot training for many Agriculture and Agribusiness positions.
The FFA works closely with Vocational Agriculture training in the classroom. This coordination between field and class may be accomplished in several ways.
FFA members are offered the chance to participate in agricultural or agribusiness oriented contests from local to National levels. An FFA member may also decide to have a program of farm work which concerns growing cattle and row crops. This program may result in recognition on local, state, district and national levels.
Georgia was honored this past year by having the Star American Farmer which is one of the highests FFA achievements. With these contests to sharpen our skill we will come closer to a more rewarding agricultural lifestyle.
But perhaps our most important challenge is in informing the American people that Agriculture advancement will eventually result in lower prices in the grocery store. The

ZO Word Limit To Be Enforced
Damaged Tobacco May Be Problem
Space, space, space! It continues to be our problem; and service to as many people as possible as economically as feasable continues to be our watchword.
Therefore, in order to publish as many notices as we can each week, it is necessary to limit the number of words for each ad to twenty (20). Any notices received that exceed this number WILL BE RETURNED TO THE SENDER ONE TIME ONLY!
After returning your notice one time for exceeding the word limit, future ads that are too long will not be published WITHOUT NOTIFICATION.
The 20 word limit includes name, address and phone number. Count your words carefully. Help us to serve as many of you as possible each week without having to leave out ads due to lack of space.
In addition, advertisers can help by remembering: Abbreviate when possible. One notice per category per person. Please do not submit more than one notice in any seven day period. Miscellaneous is considered as one category. Read the bold face notice over each ad heading for further information. Use the following form to submit your ad. You may paste it to the back of a post card or envelope.
Please place the following ad under
______________ heading.
For Ga. Growers
Toward the end of the tobacco marketing season last year, Georgia had more than the normal amount of damaged tobacco. This was one side effect of the eleven week marketing season.
Anticipating that the season will run at least that long this year and maybe 13 or 14 weeks, unless tobacco farmers take steps now, there is a greater potential for even more damaged tobacco on the 1975 market.
Due to an unusually strong demand last year, producers were not docked by buyers for damaged leaf. But if the supply and demand are more nearly in balance this year,
tobacco companies may decide to discount the prices they pay for damaged leaf, according to Robert Miles, Extension tobacco
agronomist. What can the individual grower
do?
He should plan on removing this tobacco from the barn in a somewhat dryer condition than in the past, so it will not be damaged while being held for market.
But the grower can help prevent damaged tobacco right now by making sure he has adequate storage facilities and that they are in good condition.

Learn to Recognize Flowers
By Family Characteristic
Types of Inflorescence: 1, spike; 2, cyme; 3, raceme; 4, umbel; 5, corymb; 6, head (in section) with ray-flower (a),
disk-flower (b), and involucre of separate bracts (c); 7, spadix with spathe (d).
How many flowers can you identify? Do you recognize the individual characteristics, call them by name or know when you have found a rare specimen?
There are millions of wild flowers in the eastern United States alone belonging to at least 4,000 different kinds of species. The identification of flowers, however, is a science which means there are basic rules that can be followed in determining the name and variety of plants.
Related species are grouped into genus. For example all species of violets are grouped together in the genus Viola.
Just as species are grouped into genera, a number of related genera can be grouped into a family. Families usually share certain outstanding characteristics which help identify its members.
For accurate identification, scientific names must be used instead of common names. Common names vary from one place to another. The plant called dandelion in one region is called cankerwort in another.
Leaf Shape: 1, linear; 2, oblong; 3, elliptic; 4, deltoid or triangular; 5, lanceolate; 6, ovate; 7, orbicular or round. Leaf Margin: 8, palmately-lobed; 9, pinnately-lobed; 10, sharp-toothed or serrate; 11, rounded-toothed or crenate.
Leaf Form: 1, simple leaf; 2, palmatelycompound leaf; 3. pinnately-compound leaf, each composed of numerous
leaflets. Leaf Arrangement: 4, alternate; 5, opposite; 6, whorled.
To help identify the wild flowers, familarize yourself with the
illustrations below which show leaf form and arrangement; leaf shape and margins; and types of in-
florescence (arrangement of flowers on a stalk or stem).

I note with disgust the letter of March 12 from Mr. L. P. Harmon of Atlanta. It seems he wants farm land priced at farmers prices. Farmers have had to give away their products all these years and now the city people even want us to give them our land.
Daniel Biggers Route 4 Cleveland, Georgia 30528
Dear Editor:
I want to comment on L. P. Harmon's plea for "Farm Prices
for Farmland" in the BULLETIN, March 12. I agree that it
would be nice if prices were so that more people could af-
j ford land. More people on small land holdings for all or a part of their income would no doubt result in a more in-
dependent and happier citizenry and a healthier economy.
However, with multi-national corporations and smaller
business aggregates eager to buy up all open land
(because of a tax structure which makes such acquisition
and holding practices financially feasible for them) it is not
likely that a person of average income will be able to
acquire farm land for very long in the future. A great per-
centage of the land in all the states is now held by absentee
landlords. If the farmers ask lower prices, businessmen will
just add to their acreage at lower prices. Why should the
farmer subsidize business any more than he already does?
X instead of asking for lower prices from the farmers, we
should insist on tax reforms so that corporations will have to
I put land back on the market in the form of small farm par-
i eels. Then the price of farmland will go down.

There is only one genus of cattail - Typhaceae. There are four species, the most common of which is the latifolia or common cattail. Other names frequently used are bulrush and flag.
All members of the cattail family have long linear leaves rising from the base three to six feet long. The plants grow in rich swampy muck in either fresh or brackish (salty) water.
Brown flowers so close together they resemble a club top the unbranched stem. Although they bloom in late May or June, the brown fruits may last until late fall or sometimes through the winter.
The lower part of the plant and roots contain nearly pure starch making it an excellent survival food. Colonial settlers depended on cat tail roots to supplement their diet when other vegetables were not available. The rootstock can easily be pulled and eaten raw or roasted in hot coals. There is no special !ime of the year to gather the roots as they can be enjoyed year around.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Damaged Tobacco
(Continued From Page I)
have greatly increased their acreage in recent years and some may not have increased their storage capacity at the same rate. If he does not have enough storage space to hold all the tobacco he is likely to produce, and to hold it for as long as the season might last, then he should take steps to obtain space.
Even if storage capacity is sufficient, the tobacco grower needs to be sure it is weather-proof. He should be sure his barn has no holes or open windows that might permit air movement or rain seepage.
If the grower is building a new storage facility, he should be sure to allot himself ample space to prepare his tobacco for market. He might also want to consider making it a multi-purpose facility that he could use for storing soybeans or equipment that must be kept dry.
More and better storage facilities are going to be a must for tobacco producers in the future. It is important that we minimize damage to our tobacco.
If we don't, we run the risk of losing money as well as our reputation, and this we cannot afford to do.
Georgia produces only about 1 1 per cent of the total flue-cured tobacco produced in the United States. Therefore we must have a quality product to offer at the marketplace.
Nominate Saddlebreds
American Saddlebred mares and stallions must be nominated for the Southeastern Saddle Horse Futurity before April 10, 1975, for their 1975 foals to be shown. The Futurity will be shown in conjunction with the Southeastern Charity Horse Show in Stone Mountain in October.

Farmers' Role
(Continued From Page 1)
FFA will help bridge the gap between farmer and consumer if used to its full potential.
Since its founding in 1928, the FFA has become an important teaching tool for the practical application of lessons in leadership, cooperation and citizenship - all vital to successful employment in modern agriculture.
Today the FFA provides leadership opportunities for over 432,000 students (19,000 in Georgia) by challenging them with incentive awards and leadership activities which complement the instructional program.
Through its activities, the FFA encourages entrepreneurship, helps make better employees and develops responsible citizens by uniting them with leadership opportunities in agriculture.
