Studies Beef
A major concern today is providing beef at the least possible cost. Because of the tremendous increase in feed costs over the last few years, as well as the current feed shortage problem that will probably get worse as time goes on, it has become imperative to select and develop beef cattle that will gain rapidly and efficiently convert feed to meat.
Berry College's Rollins Beef Research Center is attempting to identify breeding animals which possess these economically important traits.
In the performance testing system at Rollins Center we -are individually feeding bulls (the center has a capacity for 95 animals) and deter-

mining their daily weight gains and pounds of feed required per pound of gain (feed efficiency). Bulls that are of the desired type and passes the rapid and efficiently gaining traits will be the ones selected for breeding stock.
Performance traits such as these are greatly influenced by heredity. Therefore, fattening cattle produced by these selected efficient sires will be more economical to feed because it will not take as much time or feed to feed them to the desired slaughter size.
The Research Center's capabilities also related to nutrition and many other variables which can best be evaluated under controlled conditions. The center is also used to some extent as a laboratory supplement to the two-year animal technology program and the recently approved four-year degree program in animal science.
Peach Crop Still OK If ..
In last week's BULLETIN which went to press prior to the freezing temperatures which hit Georgia on March 3 and 4, we published an article about the encouraging outlook of Georgia's 1975 peach crop.
Subsequent surveys indicate that last week's low temperatures may have damaged the blossoms on Georgia's peach trees somewhat, and that there is a little damage anticipated to Georgia's early peach varieties. Other- later varieties should produce a full crop if of course we are not hit with cold weather during these last few weeks of March.

Horse Trainers Association National

Offers Good Opportunity Horse Show is coming to Georgia.
March 28th and 29th. This is the first

time this nationally recognized horse show has been held outside the State of Tennessee.
The Georgia Walking Horse Exhibitors Association will host the 1975 show at Stone Mountain Park.

The demand for feeder pigs has created new opportunities in the hog business for the farmer who is short on capital and feed but long on management ability and labor. However, a feeder pig operation isn't for the farmer who wants to choose his chore time because he will be spending a lot of nights in the farrowing house.
Producing feeder pigs is a highly

specialized enterprise that demands

year-round labor and a strict

sanitation and disease control

program. A farmer's abilities for

raising pigs must be better than

average to cope with the specialized

nature of the enterprise.

There are several advantages of

raising feeder pigs as compared to a

total operation:

1. There is a more rapid turnover

in the volume of pigs that can be

handled each year.

2. It provides an opportunity to use

efficiently a maximum amount of

labor.

3. Less feed is required per dollar

well to the farmer who wishes to keep a small number of sows.

5. A smaller investment in

buildings and equipment is required.

Feeder pig producers must have a

room for younger pigs coming along.

Two major Georgia agriculture chemical firms have been cited to appear at a hearing in Atlanta this week to show cause why their fertilizer manufacturing licenses should not be revoked after offering for public sale bags of fertilizers that were found to be short weighed.

shape itself is the desirable feature. Tree-form crape myrtles are desirable as accent plants or as small trees that produce seasonal color. These small trees develop attractive trunks that add interest to the winter garden.
To develop a tree shape, remove all except one to five limbs at ground level. Then cut off all side limbs on these up to the area where branches are desired. As the plant grows taller, more of the lower branches can be removed. It may also be necessary to

feeder pigs by pooling large numbers that are of desirable type and uniform in quality and size.
The foundation of the feeder pig enterprise lies in management.'Good management plus good hogs equals profit. Start with well bred high quality animals and management can be plugged in.
There is a tremendous potential for producing feeder pigs in Georgia. The market will take care of itself if we produce good quality, diseasefree, growthy pigs. Joel P. West

Form Prices For Farmland
Dear Editor: I see that on March 19th, you are coming out with another
Edition with Farms 'for sale'. I sincerely hope that this edition comes out with Farms 'for sale' at Farm Prices instead of Investment Property 'for sale'. For any Farmer will tell you to make a good deal that he must produce enough from the farm to pay for itself in (15) fifteen years. Some of the prices that people are asking, a young man would have to work a life time and still the Farm wouldn't pay for itself. It's time for people to be more realistic abour pricing their land.

Lamb's quarters also goes by baconweed, fat hen, goosefoot, muchweed, pigweed, wild spinach and wormseed. Such interesting names belong to a fuzzy 4 foot annual that will self-sow -year after year in gardens, and fields anywhere in the United States.
According to herablists, lamb's quarters makes an excellent vegetable dish being very high in vitamin C. In times of famine in Europe, the seeds were mixed with wheat to make the wheat crop go further. Indians made a concoction of the leaves to relieve indigestion.

Import Taxes
Reviewed
A number of food and agricultural commodities imported into Georgia and other states of our country are federally controlled by import duties and/or excise taxes. The purpose is to protect U. S. producers of like or competitive products, as well as U. S. consumers.
The U. S. International Trade Commission is reviewing these import taxes, considering adjustments or concessions which might be made to exporting countries in accordance with the Trade Act of 1974.
Hearings are now being held around the country and letters are invited by the Commission to determine the views of interested parties as to whether to revise or eliminate certain of the import duties and/or excise taxes.
Consumers or food industry officials interested in those imported food products which might be affected can get a list of such products from the International Trade Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Atlanta.
Persons desiring to write letters to the Commission commenting on specific products should address their correspondence to U. S. International Trade Commission, 8th and E Streets, N. W., Washington, D. C. 20436.

course, it should be done before growth begins in the spring.
If an intermediate size shrub is desired, prune moderately by removing the twiggy growth smaller than pencil size. This annual pruning will stimulate more vigorous growth in the spring.
In pruning any size plant, remember that almost all future growth will be within three to four inches of where the limb was cut off or sawed. Thus, it is possible to predict the location of most of the new growth that occurs after a plant is pruned. Gerald Smith, Extension Horticulturist.
