Soybean - Super
Success Story
It's very gratifying to have a part in helping a crop become a success" story in our state. In 1973 soybeans became the fourth most important crop following corn, peanuts and cotton with a gross value of 123 million dollars.
Much of this success can be attributed to our dedicated re
search and ex tension people with some help by Georgia Soy bean Association, the Georgia Soy bean Commod ity Commission and the many gr owers who have given leader ship. The United States Department of Agriculture's January 22nd planting
(Our guest columnist this week is W. M. Prichard, President, Georgia Soybean Association, P. O. Box 228, Louisville 30434.)____________
intentions report shows intent of a 15% increase in acreage or 1,120,000 acres for 1974 in Georgia. Nitrogen shortage might increase this figure.
With favorable weather in 1974, we could reach an income of 150 million dollars or more from soybean production. All Georgians should be proud of our state's two billion dollar plus 1973 agricultural income as only a short time ago we were trying to reach a one billion dollar figure.
Much of the success of United States soybeans as an ever expanding crop has been the worldwide market development program of our national organization, the American Soybean Associaton. . This program, started nineteen years ago mostly on faith and prayer, has been the greatest success story of American agriculture. With some help from Foreign Agriculture Ser vice and the soybean industry, American Soybean Association has been in forefront of developing uses of soy products in many countries. Its success is measured by exports of approximately one half our soybean crop as whole beans or bean products each year. Soybeans will undoubtedly be the number one source of protein for man and animals over the world in the foreseeable future.
Agricultural exports from January through November 1973 had a plus balance of 8.1 billion dollars over our agricultural imports. This favorable balance offset a deficit of 7.5 billion dollars in non agricul tural imports, giving the United States the first favorable trade balance in many years.
A majority of Americans are beginning to realize that United States Agriculture is our most im portant natural resource.

Illinois Restricts
Cattle Imports Due
To Brucellosis Rate
The state of Illinois has imposed strict requirements on the importa tion of cattle from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mis sissippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky due to the Brucellosis infection rate in these states. This plan will go into effect March 15. Other states are considering similar action.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture urges all livestock producers in Georgia to cooperate with the State Brucellosis program and hasten the eradication of this disease from Georgia.
For additional information on how you can help, contact the State Veterinarian, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street S. W., Atlanta 30334.
Apply Nitrogen
To Small Grain
The time to apply nitrogen (N) to
small grains is approaching. Present
availability and prices dictate careful
planning to obtain and efficiently
utilize N on small grains.
N should be applied to small
grain between February 1 and March
10 to obtain maximum yield
response and minimum lodging. If
applied earlier, the risk of winter
killing is increased and if applied
later than mid-March, head for
mation may have already occurred
and response to N would not be ex
pected. If N is applied as ammonium
nitrate, care should be taken that
leaves are dry before application to
avoid fertilizer burn (so that fer
tilizer does not stick to the leaves).
Application in the afternoon on a
sunny day will help to reduce the
possibility of leaf burn.
Especially in view of the high N
prices, excessive N rates should not
be applied. Total N applied, in
cluding the fall application (in com
plete fertilizer) should be between
60 and 75 Ibs/acre for grain. If small
grain is utilized for grazing, a N rate
of 110 to 130 Ibs/acre should be ap
plied as a split application with 1/2
applied in the fall and 1/2 in
February. Be sure your fertilizer
spreader is calibrated correctly, and
that it is in good condition to ac
curately distribute the nitrogen.
Warm January temperatures have
caused an abnormal amount of
vegetative growth in small grains in
the Southeast. If this condition per
sists, heavy grazing, delayed ap
plication of N, or clipping of small
grains at a plant height of 6 to 10 in
ches will retard growth and reduce
the chance of winter killing.
With the increased cost of
nitrogen fertilizer that is due in part
to the energy crisis, a little extra
planning and care in applying N to
small grains will pay dividends at
harvest time.

June Dairy Month
Four-H'ers will promote June Dairy Month again this year, and for some the promotion will mean a big profit. Members who turn in the top two entries in the 1974 June Dairy Month Poster Contest will receive $100 awards.
Posters will be judged on creativity and appeal:
A11-4-H members at the fifth grade level or above are invited to par ticipate. There are two divisions of competition: junior, 5th through 8th grades, and senior, 9th grade or above.
Competition begins at the county level. Each county must choose one junior and one senior winner by May 25, 1974. Winning county posters will be brought to district project achievement meetings to determine district winners..
For further information contact your county Extension office.
Farm Power Show
A second, vastly expanded Farm Power and Recreation Show aimed at the rural consumer is being plan ned for the spring of 1974.
The event will be held on March 28, 29 and 30 and will be located on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), Tifton.
the analysis tag is as follows: (1) Kind Wheat ,, (2) Variety Holley (3) Where grown Georgia (4) Pure Seed 99.25% is the per
centage by weight of pure Holley wheat seed. For example, a bag of seed weighing 100 pounds, 99.25 pounds of this would be pure seed. (5) Inert Matter .55% is the per centage of sand, sticks, broken parts of seed, etc., in the seed. (6) Other Crop .10% might be rye or some other crop seed.
(7) Weed Seed .10% could be evening primrose or any other common weed. A small per centage of weed seed can mean several hundred weeds per pound of crop seed.
(8) Name and Number of noxious weed seed per pound. Note -- Georgia Certified seed -- None. Depending on the weed Georgia non-certified seed may contain up to 300 noxious weed seed per pound. State Seed Law requires that analysis tag give the name and number of noxious weed seed per pound.
(9) Germination -- 90% is the per centage of wheat seed that will sprout and grow into a healthy plant.
(10) Hard seed none. Some crops like clover contain hard seed. They are good viable seed, but will not sprout immediately even when supplied with the correct temperature and moisture for germination.
(11) Total germination and hard seed 90% includes the per centage of live hard seed plus the seed that germinated im mediately.
(12) Lot Number W 140, this refers to a quantity of seed of equal quality for identification purposes. The lot number is usually shown on the bag and is required on all invoices, bill of sales, etc. Georgia certified seed lots contain 400 bags or less.
(13) Net weight 50 pounds in cludes only weight of the seed.
(14) Date of Test 12/73 is the date when the germination test was made. Month and year must be shown.
(15) Name and address of the grower and/or seller of the seed -- John Doe, Anywhere. Georgia. REMEMBER, to know what you are buying read the seed label. For if it's in the bag it'*, on
the tag.

DELUXE ANGEL FOOD
(All ingredients should be at room temperature)
1 cup sifted
1 1/2 teaspoons
cake flour
cream of tartar
1 1/2 cups
1 teaspoon
granulated sugar
vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon
almond extract
1 1/2 cups egg whites (12 eggs)
Sift flour and 1/2 cup of the sugar together three times. Add salt to whites in a large bowl. Beat whites to a coarse foam. Sprinkle cream of tartar and extracts over surface and continue beating until egg whites just form soft peaks. Add remaining sugar in two-tablespoon portions, beating after each addition, until stiff and glossy. Fold flour-sugar mixture gently into whites in 4 portions. Place mixture in ungreased 10 x 4-inch tube pan. Pass knife through the mixture circling the pan twice. Bake in a 375F (moderate) oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until top springs back when lightly touched. Invert pan to cool. Do not remove cake until thoroughly cooled. To retain maximum crust on cake remove from pan as soon as cool, about 1 hour. Makes one 10-inch cake.
Daffodils are members of the Narcissi family and are
the trumpet-flowered members of the genus. While all
daffodils are Narcissus, not all Narcissus are daffodils.
Jonquil is a name loosely applied in the South and
parts of Europe but technically it applies only to
species with a cup not less than 2/3 the length of the
flower petals.
The family name Narcissus is taken from Greek
mythology tales of a youth who turned into the flower
because of the hours spent in self-admiration.
The culture of daffodils is simple. They should be
planted in late August or September for best results.
This gives the roots time to become established before
the ground freezes. They should be planted 4 to 5 in-
ches deep in good, loose soil.
The most important part of spring care is to allow the
plants to grow after the flowers have died. This means
that you should not cut the leaves until they have tur-
ned yellow. While they are green and growing they are
manufacturing food for next year's flowers. If they are
cut, you will have smaller flowers next spring.
Bulbs should be lifted and separated no more than
once every four years. This should be done after the
leaves have died. Clumps should be carefully lifted,
separated and allowed to dry out a few days in the
shade.
