Bicentennial
At Agrirama
America is a teeming nation of highly mechanized and productive farms and an infinite number of productive businesses and professions. It abounds with outstanding hospitals, colleges, museums and other things that help make life in America the envy of men everywhere.
But it has not always been thus. Early Americans usually lived a
jsimple and sometimes very difficult life. A ;very high per'centage dug a living from the jfarm or survived in not so well establish-
industries *and professions in pioneer towns and cities. The way of life and the way Americans make a living have probably changed more during the

past 25 years than in all the years of our existence as a nation. America will celebrate its bicentennial in 1976. Many plans are being made to recognize this significant event in the life of our nation and recreate for modern man some of the atmosphere of "America two-hundred years ago."
"The Georgia Agrirama plans to share in Georgia's Bicentennial Celebration by opening to the public Phase I of its 1870-1899 living farm and rural village. This project, designed as an educational attraction for all of Georgia and its visitors, will recreate, as authentically as possible, rural life of 100 years ago. There will be farm animals and crops as they were 100 years ago.
The village will have stores and other businesses and professional offices of 100 years ago. There will be the agriculturally related industries a century old. All these things will be alive so that the visitor can "feel the atmosphere" of a bygone era.
The Georgia Agrirama Development Authority, created by an Act of the Georgia Legislature, is being developed by interested Georgians who are donating buildings and ar-

Homemade Fun Still Exists From Materials 'Round House
"Mom, what can I do now?" When the kids are home for the holidays, that will be the theme song in countless households.
Ga. 4-H'ers Win
5th At National
A Georgia 4-H livestock judging team placed fifth in the Keystone International Livestock Exposition, Harrisburg, Pa.
Members of the team, all from Moultrie, are Corbin Crane, Beth Whatley, Franklin Veasey and Joyce Whittington. In earlier state competition, the Colquitt County 4-H'ers placed sixth, earning the right to represent Georgia here.
Fifteen 4-H and FFA teams competed in the event.

Contrary to popular belief, homemade fun still exists. Vegetable printing, mini-gardening, clay modeling and painting are just a few of the possibilities. Best of all, you can make your materials from ordinary household supplies.
Take water colors, for example. Whip up your own from soap flakes,
water and food coloring. Beat the flakes with a bit of water until it reaches the consistency of meringue. Divide into smaller bowls, add food coloring and bring out the paper and
brushes. If the kids want clay, reach for the
salt and cornstarch. Mix one cup salt with 1/2 cup cornstarch in a pan. Gradually add 1/2 cup boiling water and stir constantly over low heat. Cook until it's too stiff to stir, then
remove from heat. Allow the mixture to cool and knead till smooth.
Blowing bubbles is a favorite ac-
tivity for little ones. To make your own bubble stuff, combine 1/4 cup glycerine, 1 /2 cup water and one tablespoon detergent. Use a bubble
pipe or plastic straw to blow big, iridescent spheres.
Making music doesn't require ex-
pensive instruments. Empty oatmeal

Insulating Home
Can Save Money
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, left, shows Debi Lynn Adair, the Florida Citrus Queen the official proclamation he signed declaring the last two weeks of November as Florida Citrus Weeks at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market, as Joe Cerniglia, President of the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association looks on.
Officially, the first day of winter
begins on December 22 this year, but it is certainly not any too soon to think about getting your home winterized for your own comfort, and ~ importantly to save both energy and dollars!
With home heating (and air con-
ditioning, too) the best way to save on your energy costs is to make sure your home is adequately insulated especially the attic.
This is where the greatest heat loss occurs right through the ceiling. If you have an older home, chances are that you have little, if any, insulation in your attic.
Good insulation acts to keep your" heat inside in winter, but outside in summer. The recipe for ideal in-
sulation: six inches deep in the attic; three inches in side walls; and three inches in crawl spaces that are not heated.

YAM YIELDS
Sweet potato yields depend on the amount of food the plant manufactures. What
nutrients are not used by the plant go into growth and development of the sweet potato. The faster the rate of food manufactured by the leaves, the more food will be manufactured. For this reason,
an adequate supply of soil moisture, which keeps leaves fully expanded, is necessary for highest sweet potato yields.
SAVING ENERGY
To cut down on household energy consumption, take a shower. The U.S. Department
of Agriculture reports that the average tub bath takes ten to
15 gallons of hot water. The average shower takes eight to 12 gallons.
PIEDMONT AGRICULTURE Agriculture in the Georgia Piedmont began with the huntsman and the cattle drover, who were followed by subsistence farmers. By 1 820, cotton had come into prominence as a staple crop in the area.
COOKING VEGETABLES? For a pleasant tart taste,
sprinkle lemon juice or herb vinegar on boiled vegetables, advise food specialists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
WHEN IN DOUBT Don't taste questionable food. Just one spoonful of food contaminated with botulism toxin is fatal, warn food specialists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

What 9 Sage?
Fresh and dried sage is widely used in cooking for the aromatic bitter taste. Dalmatian sage, grown in Yugoslavia and imported to this country, is primarily what we buy in the store. There are several other varieties of sage such as pineapple, garden, clary, white, Cyprus and meadow sage.
There is one sage native to the U.S. which grows profusely in the western part of our country. Sagebrush, also known as purple sage, however, is of no culinary or medicinal value.
The most commonly grown sage in the herb bed is SALVIA OFFICINALIS or garden sage. It is a shrubby perennial with gray-green leaves, the surface of which is covered with small bumps giving it a coarse texture.
"Sage" comes from Latin meaning safe, whole or healthy. Since its earliest usage as a medicinal plant, it has been said to strengthen and prolong life. An old proverb reiterates this fact, "How can a man die with sage in his garden?"
Poor but well drained garden soil and full sun are the only growing requirements for sage. It is fairly drought resistant and does not like to be overwatered as this will cause mildew.
Garden sage was highly valued for its medicinal qualities and was said to cure ailments ranging from broken bones and wounds to stomach disorders and loss of memory.
Sage is probably the most popular of the seasoning herbs and is used to enhance the flavor of poultry, fish, cheese, salad dressings and some vegetables.

Homemade Fun

boxes make fine drums while a comb and paper can substitute for a horn. Fill soft drink bottles with various amounts of water and chime away.
You might introduce the kids to gardening. Have them plant beans in an empty egg carton. With proper light and water, the shoots will appear in just a few days.
Flour and water are the only necessities for homemade paste. Mix one cup cold water with one cup flour to form a creamy consistency. Boil 1 12 cup water and gradually stir it into the flour mixture. Cook over low heat for about five minutes, remove from heat and cool. To store, put the paste in a covered jar and refrigerate.
Collages, face masks, vegetable prints and bird feeders are additional ideas, but your imagination is the only limit.

Don't Fall In Grain Bin
Climbing Out Isn't Easy
Gus Moore, Gordon County far mer, has a first in Georgia agriculture, a slotted floor beef confinement system. The practice has been used in swine production for several years but Mr. Moore has put it to use with cattle.

tifacts which are now being assembled.
Buildings already on the site on 8th Street at 1-75 in Tifton or planned for early moving, are: A cotton gin from Webster County; a grist mill from Worth, log houses from Colquitt, Lanier and Tift, a sawmill from Columbia; commissaries from Tift and Dooly; a railroad depot from Montezuma; a doctor's office from Thomas; two small stores from Tift; a farm home from Tift; a corn crib and shelter from Cook. Artifacts for the farm and village are coming from many people from all over Georgia.
The Georgia Agrirama is establishing an important benchmark in the development of today's Georgia. Its opening in '76 will be one of many ways that Georgia will recognize the significance of bygone days as we celebrate 200 years of American development.
Those interested in having a part in this project, or wishing to have additional information, can contact the writer at P. O. Box "Q", Tifton, or telephone 912/386-3344.
Autumn brings pretty leaves, cooler temperatures, mature crops and harvesting accidents. Unfortunately, the harvest of grain and soybeans brings tragedy to a few families in our state each season.
Garden Calendar
For December
This month finds most residents with a few more chores to be done outside.
Drab Yards can be improved by
planting narrow or broadleaf evergreens in areas that need some greenery. Be careful to select plants that will be an asset in every season. Berry-type plants usually add interest into winter. Consider mature plant size to insure ample growing space. Many evergreens do not produce the abundance of showy berries in heavier shade areas.
Build a Small Coldframe in a
sunny protected location for starting vegetable seedlings next year. Also annuals for spring and summer can
be started earlier. Prepare a Sunny Location for
Rose Planting. A few rose varieties require only moderate spray and fertilizer for good results. Look into
this. Fruit Plants should be selected
soon if you have a sunny area that is well-drained. Careful attention to variety selection, pollination requirements 'and planting procedures will insure good results.
Selective Pruning of Magnolia and Holly and other plants can provide a wealth of cut-foliage for
holiday decorations. This is a good time to shape those plants that need corrective pruning.
Holiday Plants. Poinsettia, Cyclamen, Begonia, Amaryllis and other plants require some care to last a long time in the average home. Follow instructions when plants are received, particularly the details on temperatures, lighting, and watering.
The number of storage bins for storing grain is increasing across the .state and, likewise, the number of accidents in bins.
Many people, it seems, do not recognize the danger of drowning in a grain bin. When a bin is unloaded, grain flows toward the center where it is pulled out by augers below.
If a person ventures into a bin being unloaded, he can easily be pulled down with the flowing grain, while noise from the machinery muf-
fles his cries for help. To avoid tragedy, the best policy
is to stay out of bins while unloading. But if you find yourself in this dangerous situation, try to get to the outside of the bin. If you can stay away from the center of the funnel, you may be able to walk the grain down to floor.
If you become mired in grain more than a foot above the knee, however, walking will probably be impossible. If this happens, try to place your body in a horizontal position on top of the grain. This permits you to float and you can use a scissor-kick, as in swimming, to get to the outside of the bin.
Even if the bin is not being unloaded, it is unwise to enter it without another person looking on.
The atmosphere may be dangerous, particularly if chemicals have been used to treat the bin contents.
Children who seem to be fascinated by ladders and climbing, should not be allowed to go near grain conveying equipment, especially when it is in operation.
Cages that look very much like shoring are now on the market and can provide a frame for support of victims caught in a bin. A rope suspended from the center of the roof can provide a lifeline in such situations.
