Microwave Weed
Killing Machines
The Engineering Experiment Station (EES) at Georgia Tech is involved in efforts including such diverse activities as poultry processing machines, peach blight studies using satellites, and tornado detection and tracking instrumentations.
For two years the Radar Division of EES has studied
the effects of microwave radiation on insects and weed seeds with particular emphasis on the possibility of developing a microwave weed killing machine. Such a machine could be important, for, unlike chemical weed killers, a microwave weed killing machine leaves no harmful residue and can be focused and directed like a flashlight beam for easy application to specific areas. Several experiments have been performed by the Radar Division and

other Georgia agencies to determine what levels of power are necessary to control or prevent the germination of weed seeds and what environmental factors such as soil type and moisture influence the success of microwave treatment. Two of these tests are of particular interest to Georgia farmers.
One test was performed at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton. EES cooperated with Dr. John Cundiff of the University of Georgia's College of Agriculture in a test of a private company's microwave weed killing machine. Even though the private company's personnel operated the equipment, the results of this test were very disappointing.
Fescue grass seed was used in an indoor test performed at Georgia Tech. Germination counts were made by the Georgia Department of

Enfl-of-Year Farm
Surveys conducted
The end-of-the-year farm surveys will be conducted for crops in November and for livestock in December by the Crop Reporting Service.
Many producers will be asked about number of harvested acres, production of crops, livestock numbers, poultry numbers, and farm labor and wages.
Some producers will receive a questionnaire in the mail. Others will be visited by a USDA representative. Each producer in the survey sample is urged to cooperate. After filling in the answers to the questions, the questionnaire is forwarded to the crop reporting service's office in Athens for processing. With good response from the producers in the sample, both enumerated and via mail, the sample will be adequate to produce reliable estimates for Georgia's agriculture.
Scientist Honored
Dr. O. W. Charles, an Extension Service poultry scientist at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture, was recently presented a "Distinguished Faculty Award" by the Ag Alumni Association.
Dr. Charles has specialized in the area of vitamin stability and eggshell quality while at Georgia.
Georgia Farmers Pick 'Beans
For Versatility,
As costs of agricultural production go higher and higher, many Georgia far-
mers are turning increasingly to soybeans to get the most out of their labor,
machinery and fuel.
. Low.. labor requirements, ver-
satility of equipment and high poten-
tial net income make soybeans a
good cash crop in this time of
skyrocketing production expenses.
One of the biggest advantages of
soybeans is a comparatively low
labor requirement. The labor shor-
tage that plagues agriculture
throughout the state is particularly
acute in counties like Walton it's
within commuting distance of
Atlanta.
Workers who might otherwise be
available to help on the farm go to
Atlanta to work. So growers must
concentrate on crops they can
produce by themselves.
Another big advantage of soybeans
is the versatility of the equipment.
You can cut any kind of grain
with a combine. But you can't do
anything with a cotton picker except
pick cotton. And a picker is an ex-
pensive piece of machinery.
While 'beans offer the Georgia far-
mer a number of advantages over

brothers, have been growing
Seven Georgians soybeans as a main crop since
1970.
iiBackyard Beekeeping" Honored For Work
Supplements Sugar Supply
To bee or not to bee? Soaring sugar prices are reviving that question.
"Open-Dating 99
Voluntary
"Open Dating" is not mandatory but is completely voluntary. Processors who voluntarily elect to put a calendar date rather than a coded date on their products must put what that date means.
The U.S.D.A.'s newly recommended regulations on meat and poultry products require that the calendar date be identified as the packing date, the "sell by" date, or the "use before" date.
These dates may then be qualified by terms such as "for maximum freshness".
"Beekeeping is possible even in a small back yard," says Rodney Coleman, entomologist with the Cooperative Extension Service. "You probably won't make dazzling profits, but you can supplement your sugar supply."
There are three requirements for beekeeping equipment, bees and a suitable location.
Basic equipment includes a hive, frames, two or three supers (extra frame boxes), a smoker and protective veil and gloves. Usually, $50 covers the cost.
You can buy a hive readymade or assemble your own from a kit. You'll be all set by spring the best time to begin beekeeping.
Three pounds of bees and one queen is the optimum amount for starting a colony. Buy them from a

The beguiling expression "we are at the parsley and the rue" meant being at the beginning of a project, derived from the Greek habit of bordering their gardens with parsley and rue.
Of the more than 30 varieties of parsley, the curly french (Petroselinum crispum) is the most popular. This is the most compact and decorative species and makes a beautiful border plant for all gardens.
Italian or plain-leaf parsley (P. filicinum) is preferred by cooks because its leaves have more flavor than the French, but the latter reigns supreme as a garnish.
Parsley has had a variety of purposes and meanings in history. Supposedly signifying victory, garlands of parsley were used to crown champions at the Isthmian games; the linking of parsley with death is found in an old English proverb expression "to be in need of parsley" which means at death's door; and yet another use of parsley in olden days was to ward off intoxication.
Parsley was brought to this country by early colonists and it is one of the few . herbs southerners have legendized, considering it unlucky to transplant it when moving to a new house.
Parlsey is an easy plant to grow but the "seeds must go to the devil and back 9 times before they sprout" - an attempt to explain the slow germination of parsley seed. Soaking the seeds for 24 hours before planting will cut the germination down to a few weeks.
Since it is a biennial, you should replant parsley every year to keep a new crop coming in. Sun-filtered shade, and partially moist soil are the only requirements necessary to grow parsley.
Parsley is one of the most popular herbs in history. The reason for this reputation is perhaps explained by a 16th century herbalist in his writings that "parsley should be eaten to helpeth men who have weak brains".

Proper Care of New Horse
Ranges From Saddle to Fencing
An exercise area is also a requirement for proper horse care. In order to provide pasture and exercise together, allow a minimum of one acre per horse.
For exercise alone (no pasture) a quarter acre per horse will do. Remember, the smaller the acreage, the better fence that will be required.
Microwave
(Continued From Page 1)
Agriculture's Seed Division. The results of this test showed that weed seed control is dependent on moisture content of the seed, and the soil moisture and type.
Further, the amount of microwave power required, even under ideal conditions, to control weed seeds makes microwave treatment with current technology uneconomical except for perhaps a few very special cases.
What does this mean to Georgia farmers? It means that microwave weed killers are some years away from being significantly useful and reliable. More research will be necessary to determine the exact conditions which produce maximum control at minimum cost.
A warning should also be made to Georgia's farmers. Claims for machines using microwave radiation to control weeds or insects should be viewed cautiously. The equipment tested is not ready for general agricultural use yet. It would be wise to contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture or your county agent before buying or renting such equipment.
Beekeeping
(Continued From Page 1)
commercial supplier or another beekeeper, but make sure they are certified. This prevents the possibility of bee diseases.
Locate hives away from children's play areas. Camouflage with shrubs or other greenery to cut down on stings and complaints from the neighbors. Water is important, too. Keep a fresh, cool supply near the hive.
"Beekeeping for Beginners" offers more information on the subject. For a free copy contact your county Extension agent.
Rust Stains
Can Be Removed
Unhappy about those unsightly stains in sinks, bathtubs, and toilets? Water dripping over a period of time causes these yellowish stains.
Easy removal of rust stains from enamel sinks and tubs can be accomplished by the use of liquid rust removers. These products can be purchased for a minimum price at your local department store or drugstore.
For those more stubborn stains from toilet bowls, two steps may be necessary for their removal. First you will need wet sandpaper which can be purchased from most paint stores. It is a must to lower the water level by dipping out some of the water. This makes it possible to sand the yellowish ring off.
If the stain still remains, the second step is to go over the yellowish stain with the liquid stain remover. Do not use a knife or other sharp object to scratch the stain off.
Fences should be strong, high (at least 50 inches) and have safe gate latches in order to control horses.
Shelter must be provided. In confinement the average horse requires at least 100 square feet of stall space, or a 10' x 10' box stall. Where
(Second in a series on buying and caring for a horse by Dr. Charles A. Mutton, Extension Animal Scientist, U.G.A.. Athens 30601.)_______
several horses are provided access to a open shed, 50 square feet per horse will do. The stable should be well ventilated, sturdy, and well drained.
Manure removal and handling, must be provided for.
Equipment cost will range from less than $100 as a bare minimum to provide stable and riding equipment for one horse to many thousands of dollars which can be spent in riding equipment, stable goods, etc. Every horse will require feed and water buckets, simple grooming tools, a strong halter and lead rope (preferably nylon), saddle, saddle pads and blankets and a bridle.
Many of the lower-priced saddles on the market today are poorly designed, uncomfortable to ride and flimsy in their construction. A good used saddle would be a better buy in most cases than a low-priced (under $100) new saddle, whether English or Western. The saddle needs to fit both the horse and rider.
A great many horse owners will eventually purchase a horse trailer in order to haul their horses to shows, trail rides, and other mounted events. The horse trailer does represent a considerable investment. Like any major equipment purchase, the horse trailer should be well cared and maintained so as to last- as long as possible. Used trailers are often available and can be a good buy.
Health care will include both regular veterinary services, such as worming and immunizations, and the possibility of emergency care in the case of injury or disease. Controlling internal parasites requires both good stable and pasture management and regular worming with the appropriate drugs to control internal parasites.
Most horses kept on small acreages should be wormed at least four times annually. Administering the worming drug by stomach tube is the surest way of worming and must be done by a veterinarian.
All horses should be immunized for sleeping sickness (VEE and EEE). Vaccination for tetanus is also essential, and your local veterinarian may also recommend immunization against certain other diseases, such as influenza. The cost of this basic health care can be estimated at about $50 per horse per year, but will vary widely.
Accidents are responsible for a major part of a horse s veterinary expenses and can often be prevented. Being careful to provide safe fences and stables, avoiding moldy or decayed feeds, and exercising care in handling are examples of some of the primary ways that a manager can avoid costly accidents.
