There is a well-worn but true statement that has been used a lot lately and certainly applies to the egg industry: when the going gets tough, the tough get going. This is precisely what the egg industry has been doing through the last several years. We have had some good times and some very lean. We are not out of the woods yet but through the Georgia Egg Commission, we are helping ourselves.
The Commission's purpose is to increase egg consumption through
promotion, research, and education. We utilize many avenues to achieve this goal. In promotion, our staff works closely with radio and television stations and newspapers throughout the state to tell the Georgia Egg Story and to make consumers aware of the excellence of the

egg. There is not a day that passes that the Commission does not have a radio program, newspaper article, or some message reaching the consuming public.
We work with stores to display point-of-purchase materials to educate the consumers. We also do it through other home economists and the extension service.
Our producers have the opportunity to draw on the resources and abilities of the Commission staff throughout the year for promotion and marketing purposes.
We believe that we are a prime example of an industry working to improve itself because we are funded entirely by the funds which producers themselves pay into the program. Through the efforts of our members and with the counsel of our Commissioner of Agriculture, we are constantly seeking new avenues of service to the commercial egg industry of the state.
An excellent example of this is the Commission monies which go to the University of Georgia Poultry

Plant-Pest Degree Horse Sense For Horse Buyers
Offered By UGA "Look Before You Leap"
A Master's degree in plant protec-
tion and pest management is being offered in a new program at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture.
"By combining courses in agronomy, horticulture, entomology and plant pathology, the new sequence will qualify graduates for work in industry, Extension or regulatory agencies," said Wiley N. Garrett, coordinator of the program.
The growing world demand for

Owning a pleasure horse provides a great deal of enjoyment for thousands of
Georgians. Horseback riding is one of the oldest and most popular sports
known. The horse provides real family fun, offering a challenge to everyone
from the beginner to the Olympic caliber rider. Trail riding, horse shows, racing,
and just backyard riding are examples of the many ways of enjoying the com-
panionship of a pleasure horse.
Perhaps one of the greatest
reasons that the horse population has
grown so rapidly in recent years is
the tremendous fascination of young
people with horses. Caring for a
horse can be a real learning ex-

Colorful Shrubs Planted NOW
In almost any type of landscape development a few colorful spring flowering shrubs can be included. Now is time to plant these shrubs.
Spiraea, Forsythia, Althaea and Flowering Quince used in mass plantings can brighten up a garden.
Winter Honeysuckle and Naked Jasmine are especially nice for early blooms. These flowering shrubs used around, and under Dogwood, Crabapple and Redbud make a very attractive informal border. Mix a few

that the store can not sell the product as fresh after that date. Is it safe to
buy and use that product after the pull-date has passed? Yes, the pulldate is designed to allow you a span of time to store and use the product
at home even if it is bought after the pull-date.

Necessities
There are necessities that must be provided, and the horse owner must plan for these and should budget the cost of providing these necessities before a horse is purchased.
Feed is the most obvious necessity
and usually represents the greatest cost of owning a horse. The actual cost of feed varies with market conditions, availability of pasture, storage space available, and the owner's ability to economize in feed
purchases. However, an average cost of a
dollar per day is useful for budgeting for a 1,000 pound pleasure horse that is stabled with little access to pasture. This one dollar figure allows for 20 pounds of hay (figured at

A young servant to the King of Cypress was carrying a large vessel of precious perfume of which the King was particularly fond. Accidentally he tripped and spilled the contents. He was so afraid of punishment he fainted and while lying on the ground where the oil had spilled, he metamorphosed into the oregano plant.
Although the story is myth, it does help explain the flavor of the herb. Often confused with marjoram, it is more bitter and pungent with dark green leaves shaped like a roundish egg. The flavor is similar to sweet marjoram or thyme, all of which belong to the mint family.
Oregano is a beautiful plant often grown solely for its attractive purplish pink, lilac or white flowers rather than its scented leaves.
Like most herbs, oregano requires cutting back to encourage bushiness and thick foliage. It makes a good container plant thriving in well drained soil, full sun and routine watering.

Science Department and the Extension Poultry Science Department each year researching better egg production. These projects have included internal and external egg qualities, fatty liver syndrome and others. These are all problems which confront egg producers and the Commission is seeking to find answers through the cooperation of some of the nation's top poultry scientists.
The egg industryman is an optimist by necessity. We always believe that a better egg can be produced and that "tomorrow will be a better day" for industry. It is to this end that the efforts of the Georgia Egg Commission are dedicated.
We are industry funded and operated but in a larger sense we are a consumer organization seeking to Inform the people of our state and nation that the golden goodness of the egg is one of the most important foods that America has to offer and that the egg industry is an important part of agriculture in Georgia.
Approximately 50 counties in the longleaf-slash pine area of South Georgia produce more than 80 per cent of the nation's supply of gum turpentine and rosin. This is also about 50 per cent of the world production.
When looking for a garden site, keep in mind that the exact soil type is less important than such factors as high fertility, good internal drainage, ease of tilling, good moisture retention and deep topsoil.

$62.50 per tone, or $1.25 for a 40pound bale), and 5 pounds of mixed grain at $7.50 per hundred weight.
In addition to the hay and grain, trace mineralized salt and a calcium and phosphorous supplement should be provided. Adequate salt and minerals can be provided for one horse for a year for $5.00 or less. The expense of feeding horses can be minimized by using pasture and homegrown feeds as much as possible.
Even for the suburban horse owner, pasture can often be rented at considerable savings. In many areas, vacant land can be fenced, fertilized and clipped to provide good horse pasture and save on feed cost. Horses on good pasture will require little grain or supplements except during periods when they are being ridden hard and often. Of course, brood mares that are nursing foals and growing horses will require more grain in order to look good and produce profitably.
Money can also be saved in grain purchases by buying in large quantities wherever possible. In order to do this, you will need good rodentfree, dry storage area. If you own several horses, you should consider using bulk bins and purchasing bulk feed rather than bags. Whole grains (corn and oats) can sometimes be purchased on the farm at harvest at a considerable saving.
Water is the cheapest feed, but the most essential nutrient. Every horse should have access to good clean drinking water at all times. This can be provided by means of a creek or
pond, a safe bucket or water trough, or an automatic waterer,

Freshness Date - January 17, 1975. "Better if used by April 21, 1975," is another type of opendating. This means that the product will be at the highest level of freshness or quality up to the date written at the label. Is it all right to use the product after the freshness date has passed? Yes, however, the product will not be at the peak of freshness or have a very high quality.
* Read food labels to find the pulldate or open-date.
* Use the food before or within a reasonable time after the date shown on package.
* Store foods quickly and correctly after you get home. , * Open-dating does not mean that all foods bought will be fresh or of high quality. The way food is handled and the temperature at which it is stored affect quality. If you can't find the open or pull-date, ask the dealer to show you the date.
* If you see other numbers on the item ask the dealer to tell you their meaning.
