Research Council
Aids Forestry
Forestry emerged from World War II beset by two major problems: On the positive side was the exploding demand worldwide for housing, paper products, furniture and naval stores. On the negative side was the fact that millions of acres of abandoned and eroded farmland was unproductive and was best suited to be planted to trees. In addition, millions of acres of forestland was understocked as a result of years of rampant woods burning, poor cutting practices and other abuses.
Fortunately, a corps of business and forestry leaders recog-
nized Georgia's 'great potential for meeting state, national and international needs and thus focused their attention on , making the state's 25,000,000 acres of forestland proI ductive. The answer lay in the intensification of forestry practices in reforestation, protection management and utilization. It was immediately apparent, though, that there was a dearth of

knowledge so urgently needed to meet this great challenge. Thus was created the Georgia Forest Research Council, an independent state agency with the sole responsibility of solving Georgia's multiciplicity of forest management problems through coordinated research involving state, federal and private agencies.
In 1953, Honorable Herman E. Talmadge, then Governor of the state signed a bill creating the Georgia Forest Research Council with full power to pursue every possible means to initiate, implement and coordinate forest research in the state. This agency, operating largely on public money, has been recognized nationwide, as an example of how a state can effectively meet and solve its own problems. Georgia became a leader in forestry and forestry research. The Council does not do research. It seeks out and contracts with educational institutions and other organizations

BCF Georgia's Excel E27, a full French Charolais bull, owned by Mr. and Mrs. James W. Bullock, Bullock Charolais Farms, Dallas, broke the world yearling weight record of 1728 pounds for 365 days and set a new one at 1735 pounds. Allowing 100 pounds birth weight, this is an average daily gain of 4.479 pounds per day. This weight was verified by Gerald Atkinson, University of Georgia, Paulding County Estension Agent PRI (Performance Registry International), the pioneer of performance testing for all breeds, gave this bull an official PRI adjusted yearling weight of 1781 pounds. This is the first bull from the state of Georgia to hold this record.

Get your handicrafts ready now!
School Age Child
Needs Immunization
The percentage of vaccinated children under five years of age has dropped steadily over the past several years, and now is so low that the state could face a serious problem.
One cause of this problem is parents who wait until their children approach school age before completing their immunizations. As a

rrCool Grassesrr
For Best Lawns
Now is the time to seed lawns with cool season grasses. Fescues for north Georgia can be planted in shade or sun. September or early October is the best time to plant these grasses in order for them to produce a good stand with a root system that penetrates the soil deep enough to survive the summer months.
FERTILIZATION Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue should be seeded at the rate of at least 10 pounds per 1000 square feet of lawn area. For new lawns plow in at least 25 pounds of fertilization such as 1010-10 and 50 to 100 pounds of lime per 1000 square feet of lawn area. After a smooth seed bed has been prepared sow and rake to cover seed. A roller will help smooth the surface and firm the soil around the seed. A light mulch of weed free straw will help conserve moisture and prevent soil erosion while grass becomes established.
MOWING Established fescue lawns should be mowed at one to two inches and seeded with 10 pounds per 1000 square feet. Bare spots should be dug or scratched to provide a seed bed. For best results an aerator should be run over the entire area.
GERMINATION Much of the seed sown on an established lawn is lost since it can not germinate when left on top of the ground where it can dry out. Liberal watering during the germination of seed is necessary to get a good stand. Start mowing when grass is three to four inches high and always mow when grass is dry.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

The Georgia Horseman's Association met recently at Stone Mountain Inn. Among those pictured are: W. C. Rexroat, President; Charlie Outz, First Vice President; Mrs. Charles R. Pendleton, Second Vice President; Mrs. James B. Kirk, Secretary; and Bill Mangum, Treasurer. Special guest of
honor was Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Not pictured are Directors Hoyt Padgett, Sam Hart and Jim Conrad. The Association does
not favor any particular breed of horse but works to further the interest and needs of the horse industry in Georgia. All interested horse lovers are invited to join. For additional information, contact Mrs. A. D. Conway, 205 West Crossville Road, Roswell, Georgia 30075, Ph. 993-3195.

Beekeepers value lemon balm because it supposedly attracts bees; it is also believed that bees stay together and in the garden longer if their hives are rubbed with the leaves.
Lemon balm has also been a popular strewing herb and chairs have been rubbed with the foliage to give them a pleasant lemon scent. Lemon balm tea, according to folklore, will dispel melancholy and sadness and a compress of the leaves if applied to scorpion stings will remove the poison.
This lemon scented/flavored perennial prefers rich, moist soil with sun or partial shade. It is very hardy and spreads rapidly by runners. The leaves of the plant can be used to flavor tea, fruit salads or punch and are used extensively in making potpourri.

Carryover I \\rt HH
(Continued From Page 1)
ment Grader to grade the tobacco. A receipt will be given to each producer listing the weight and grade of each sheet of tobacco delivered. Also, the producer will be asked to sign an arrangement making Stabilization agent for the producer for the handling, servicing, and sale of such tobacco.
The tobacco will be received, processed, and redried in the usual manner and offered for sale as soon as possible after July 1, 1975. That tobacco which does not sell for a satisfactory price will be tendered to Commodity Credit Corporation for loan under the 1975 program. Proceeds from sales or loans advanced, less expenses incurred (storage, insurance, fumigation - anticipated not to exceed $.01 per pound) during the carryover period, will be distributed to participating growers after July 1, 1975.

with requisite research competence in personnel and facilities.
Research accomplishments are many. One of the Council's first triumphs was in the field of reforestation where research developed efficient means for gathering, treating and storing pine seed to reduce cost and preserve viability. The Council has supported tree improvement programs enabling the state to take the lead in producing seed in seed orchards from selected high quality pines.
Council-sponsored research has demonstrated the feasibility of growing "silage sycamore" and other hardwoods on short rotations as a source of fiber.
The Council has also supported studies on Wildlife Management beneficial to the farmer, and the utilization of residues such as bark and sawdust for agricultural pur-
poses.___________________
