Fifty Good,
Golden Years
The Georgia Homemakers Council celebrated its 50th Anniversary at the 4-H Center at Rock Eagle, in conjunction with the State Council Meeting, May 14-16, 1974.
The State Council was organized on January 24, 1924 on the cam-
pus of the University of Georgia at Athens. It is composed of Community and County Homemaker organizations and also members at large.
The Homemakers are proud of the contributions made in their communities, counties, and state. These have truly been fifty golden years of growth, progress, and service. Homemakers, seeing the need for school children having a nutritional meal at noon, prepared and served

Paper Shortage "Phony Peach" Disease
Hits Bulletin
Reducing Georgia's Trees
The current short supply and high price of newsprint papers in the U.S. has effected the Market Bulletin. We've had to shorten the size of your paper. Did you notice?
The FARMERS AND CONSUMERNS MARKET BULLETIN formerly ran 161/2 inches from top to bottom and is now only 15 inches. A very slight change and yet it cuts the number of notices we can publish each week by about 100.
Therefore, we need your cooperation. We will continue to serve as many people as possible each week and strive to cause as little hardship to our advertisers as possible. However, it will probably be necessary to leave out certain categories each week. This week we did not have room for our
"Livestock Handling Boarding and Equipment" column or most of our Poultry, Game, Fowl and Eggs For Sale and Wanted notices. They will be published next week. DO NOT RE SUBMIT YOUR AD.
Also, please watch the word count and do not exceed the 25 word limit.
The editors appreciate the cooperation of our advertisers and subscribers.

A disease which seriously reduces the production of infected peach trees has increased sharply in Georgia orchards this year.
Normal
Phony
Paintin' & Pumpkin
Dr. Norman McGlohon, plant
pathologist with the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, says that the disease, known as "Phony peach" disease, appears to be in-
fecting from five to fen per cent of all peach trees in the state this season.
If this infection rate continues to climb, many Georgia peach orchards could be destroyed in a few years.
Phony disease is caused by a microorganism similar to a virus. It does not kill the infected tree, but severely reduces the number of
peaches produced. Peaches produced are of low quality.
Wild plum bushes are believed to be the primary source of phony
peach infections. The disease is spread by the leafhopper insect.
Show Coming Soon
The eleventh Annual Paintin' & Pumpkin Arts and Crafts show will be held at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market the weekend of October 5-6.
Open to all interested Georgians, the show features a Juried Division of original works of art. In addition, there will be a Flea Market for the sale of collectibles of every description.
Anyone interested in entering the show may obtain entry blanks and additional information by writing P. O. Box 314, Forest Park, Georgia 30050, or by calling Tina Picard at 363-2908.
Weeds like Johnsongrass which grow up into the tree are believed to have contributed to the disease as it feeds the insect.
The disease was first recognized in 1885.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture is conducting an eradication program of its own and is doing an excellent job, but needs grower cooperation.

Historians claim that lavender is one of the oldest sweet-smelling fragrances known to man. Native to the Mediterranean, sailors since Roman days have claimed that the fragrance of lavender along the shores could be smelled far out to sea.
Lavender blossoms are prized for their fragrance and are widely used to perfume soaps, pillows, bath and toilet waters and in times past, have even been added to chair stuffing. Trunks of large old plants are often burned for firewood in Europe releasing the perfume which acts as a natural room deodorizer.
There are several species of lavender which are popular and easy to grow. Englash lavender (Lavandula officinalis, in some books L. spica) is a tall woody perennial reaching a height of 3-4 feet, spreading about 3 feet across. The leaves are gray and narrow and the lavender flowers grow on 24 inch long spikes at the end of the stems in mid-summer. This is the traditional lavender from England introduced to other parts of the world as early as 1568.
Several dwarf varieties of English lavender are available for cultivation:
(1) 'Compacta', 8 inches tall, 1215 inches wide, deep purple flowers.
(2) 'Munstead', 18 inches tall, deep lavender-blue flowers.
French lavender (L dentata) has bright green leaves with square toothed edges and reaches a height of about 3 feet. The lavender-purple flowers grow in short, blunt clusters. In mild winters this variety will bloom almost continually. However, French lavender is less hardy than the English.
All lavenders need sun and loose, fast draining soil. The plants should be pruned immediately after blooming to keep plants compact and neat.
Its' sweet-smelling flowers make lavender a valuable plant and it is grown commercially for use in perfume, soap, etc. There is also a demand for the dried flowers which are used to fill sachets and for placing in linen closets.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Golden Years
(Continued From Page 1)
traveled 16,656 miles, visited 75 counties, and distributed 6,3918,410 books to rural women. At the dedication, it was said the book-
mobile will roll forward as a stinging repudiation of the dismal pessimism
that once stigmatized Georgia as a "Tobacco Road State."
As the young people of today will be the homemakers of tomorrow, the
Council gives scholarships annually totaling $1,050.00 to three deserving 4-H girls.
A special project in which the homemakers worked long and hard with many other Georgians was the building of the beautiful 4-H Center at Rock Eagle.
There have been many other ac-
complishments in the areas of citizenship, safety, cultural arts, health. Club members, too, can be
depended on for service to nursing homes, hospitals, day care centers,
health centers, and homes for alcoholics. The Georgia homemaker
shares unselfishly of her time, talents, energy, and material possessions in her service to her community, county, state, and nation.
The organization offers one of the greatest groups of volunteers in America. As a Homemaker member one renders uncounted hours and incalcuable dollar value in service to
others. Originally the organization was formed to help the rural women, but now it is an organization to which any woman may become a member. If you would like to join a community club, a county council, or be a member at large, contact the Ex-
tension Agent in your county and she can put you in touch with a homemaker member who can give you information.
Women have creative energy that
when properly channeled can do great things. Each homemaker should borrow from the 4-Hers their motto, "To make the best better" for the purpose of this organization is to foster better home life, better community life, greater interest in humanity and better living conditions for people every where as we look to new horizons, new ideas, new challenges, and new inspirations.
Vicki L. Eubanks of Appling has been chosen as the 1974 Georgia Forestry queen. She is the daughter of Reverend and Mrs. Harold S. Eubanks. Mitzi Minick, of Statesboro, was runnerup.

Extended Time On "Open Datingrr
The U.S.D.A. is extending the effective date of its new regulation covering "open dating" of meat and poultry products from Sept. 8 to Dec. 8, 1974.
Some processors and retailers have initiated open dating programs coupled with consumer education aimed at letting consumers know the meaning of the open date they are using.
The Sept. 8 date would force these processors and retailers to suspend these programs, since they and their federally-inspected suppliers could not obtain the necessary equipment to make changes in their current open dating of meat and poultry products.
The new regulations will provide consumers with significantly more information on the freshness or shelf life of meat and poultry products. The ultimate quality and safety of such products, however, depends on how carefully they are handled between the processing plant and the consumer's dinner table.
Lynn Bentley stitched her way to a state championship at the 32nd annual State 4-H Congress. The 16year-old Decatur 4-H'er prevailed in competition against 19 other district Fashion Revue champions. Miss Bentley will represent Georgia at National 4-H Congress in November in Chicago.
STATE ELEVATION

Conserving Crop
Protects Allotments
Farmers who participate in the 1975 upland cotton, feed grain and wheat programs may protect their allotments with volunteer conserving crops.
Any conserving crop on cropland (including approved volunteer cover) will protect allotments if the crop or crop residue is left on the land for erosion protection through the normal growing season. This includes volunteer and seeded small grains pastured out or harvested for other than grain before the crop matures.
The U.S.D.A. is issuing a clarification on allotment protection at this time when many farmers are making cropping plans. Your local ASCS office has details.
