Success Story
For Soybeans
Soybeans have become a major crop in Georgia with over a million acres planted in 1974.
The Georgia Soybean Commodity Commission has been in
operation for three years and in 1974 was reaffirmed for three more years by a 94% favorable vote of growers voting. The Commission appreciates the confidence shown by soybean growers in the programs and the administration of their funds. From it's inception, the primary goal of the Commission has been to further the interests of soybeans in Georgia and to use all the funds in a manner in which all Georgia bean
(Our guest columnist this week is William (Bill) Prichard, President, Georgia Soybean Association, P. O. Box 228, Louisville 30434.)_____
growers would benefit. This policy has been adhered to with top priority given to research, market development and education in that order.
The 1973 crop commission funds were allocated to Georgia Research Stations-$40,050, to American Soybean Association Market Development Program $20,000 and $6,000 for Georgia Extension Service Educational Program.
A reserve was held for expenses of the referendum in 1974 and any contingencies that may occur. Administrative costs have been less than 1 % of funds collected. Many dedicated people have given of their time and substance to make our program a working success.
We feel that research in the various areas of our state is important because of differing problems of soybean production in the areas. We have already seen farmers using our supported research results in many areas of the state. We feel that continuing support for Georgia research will pay dividends to all our bean growers.
All production research will be in vain unless there are assured markets for soybeans at profitable prices for growers. The American Soybean Association has had a market development program going on in foreign countries since 1958. It has been highly successful, resulting in an ever increasing acreage and production over the years.
This effort must be supported as 50 percent of our U. S. beans must be exported as beans or bean products. The program is worldwide in scope; the latest office being opened in Vienna, Austria,

Segregation Three
Peanut Regulations
Effective for the 1974 season, a producer of a lot of peanuts found by Federal-State inspectors to contain Aspergillus-flavus mold must agree to sell the peanuts to a sheller or crusher who is a signer of the Peanut Marketing Agreement or tender the lot to GFA for marketing on his behalf.
However, the rules will permit the producer to have a second inspection. After the second inspection, the producer must dispose of his peanuts in the manner described above; furthermore, the second inspection must occur before the close of business on the next working day following the first inspection.
If a grower chooses to have a second inspection made, he will be given a copy of the MQ-94 for the lot which will state that visible mold was found. The MQ-94 must be presented to the inspector making the second inspection.
If a producer undertakes to dispose of a lot of Segregation three peanuts in any manner other than described, he will be ineligible for price supports on the remainder of his crop. If a lot of peanuts found to have Aspergillus flavus mold should receive price support, or should a producer dispose of a lot of Segregation Three peanuts in any manner other than prescribed, and subsequently receive price support on other peanuts, he will be required to pay CCC a penalty of seven cents per pound on all such peanuts.

Peanut Producers Have Option

If Not Satisfied With Price

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and Farm Bureau President H.

Emmett Reynolds have urged peanut farmers to place their 1974 production in

the CCC loan program if they are not satisfied with the price offered by com-

mercial buyers.

The two farm leaders said in a

Excess Tobacco

joint statement that Georgia peanut producers should be fully aware that they have the option of placing their

peanuts in the loan at the time they are brought to market.
Farmers choosing this option will

be assured of receiving a loan ad-

Georgia tobacco farmers who
produced more tobacco this year than they are permitted to sell under federal quota regulations will have an opportunity to store their tobacco for sale during the 1975 marketing season, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
The Flue Cured Tobacco Stabilization Corporation has said receiving points will be established for growers following the end of the Georgia sales season and that all tobacco delivered to such points will be graded and processed for storage.
"Such tobacco received from farmers who over-produced will be
charged against their 1975 quota, but it will give farmers with excess
tobacco an opportunity to store it now for sale next year," Irvin said.
On July 1, 1975, such growers will be eligible for the 1975 government loan rate; however, the tobacco will be offered for sale to buying companies and after processing and storage costs have been deducted, each grower will be paid his pro-rata share from such sales.

vance based on the legal minimum price support level less a $ 17 per ton deduction imposed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture for han-
dling, storage and inspection costs on loan peanuts. In addition, farmers using the loan program stand to share in any profits that may be realized through the resale of these
peanuts. "We have learned that ap-
proximately three million dollars has been earned and will be distributed to growers using the CCC loan program in 1973," Irvin and Reynolds said. "This means that approximately $10 per ton will be returned to those participating in the
loan last year." The other option available to far-
mers is to sell their peanuts to commercial buyers at whatever is agreed to between the producer and the buyer. Last year, the cash price generally paid Georgia farmers by commercial buyers was the exact equivalent of the loan value that is, support price less the amount of the handling, storage and inspection
deduction.

Pecan Festival

"This year, rather than sell their peanuts commercially at the same value they would receive by putting

vin and Reynolds said.

By placing their peanuts in the

loan, the producers at least stand to

recover some or possibly all of the

$17 per ton deduction from profits

that may be realized from the

disposal of the Loan peanuts.

"In the case of peanuts sold to

commercial buyers, the price

received by the farmers at the buying

point is final. If last year is any

guide, a farmer selling his peanuts

commercially in effect will be

penalized $17 per ton with no hope

of recouping any of it."

This year, most buying points in

Georgia are authorized under con-

SPECIAL SOIL ANALYSIS
A special soil analysis can reveal if minpr elements are lacking and, as a result, causing abnormal growth or low yields, according to the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. For instance, the lack of zinc in the soil or an improper pH may cause abnormal, twiggy growth of pecans, seriously reducing the yield.

Dear Editor:
I notice there is a shortage of lids for canning purpose*. This is a great disadvantage and deserves your attention.
I find that plastic cans or jugs sold in delivery of milk and household bleach will withstand boiling necessary for can ning. The only avenue for passage of air is at the bottom of the lid-screw. This can be rendered air-tight by regular sealing wax or melted wax from a candle. It can be applied to the lower part of the lid-screw by the liquified candle sub stance or by preparing proper receptacle can use the con ventional sealing wax. But you will be surprised at the sim plicity of candle-use.
I found this method white I was at home from illness. If this method is used it will provide food for many who would be otherwise burdened with expense.
John Henry Poole 1107 South Park Avenue Tifton, Georgia 31794
(Editor's note: The main disadvantage of this procedure, from our lab's standpoint, is that plastic jugs have thin spots rendering weak walls in the jug. If a jug breaks or spings a leak, the contents will be lost.
However, the lab did run a few plastic containers through a test and they stood up much better to high temperature and pressure than anticipated. The temperature and pressure tested were higher than those needed in home canning.
Therefore, if the housewife uses caution and care in the handling of plastic jugs, and if she washes them carefully and thoroughly with plenty of soap and water, then rinses them carefully and fully at least two times, the odds are that she will
have no problem with the jugs. Also, care should be used to completely seal the bottom of
the screw caps so as to make a complete seal with the candle wax; thereby closing all small pin point openings so that air cannot enter the threads of the screw cap. Air will cause spoilage of the product in the plastic jugs.)

Once thought to protect homes against the "evil eye", hyssop was hung over doorways to avert superstitious curses. There are many Biblical references to hyssop including purification of lepers as well as a mixture of the bitter herb and vinegar given to Christ during his crucifixion.
Hyssopus officinalis is a member of the mint family and grows to a height of 18 to 24 inches. The smooth, narrow leaves taper to a point and are dark glossy green. They have a pungent aroma and resinous taste. Small white, pink or blue flowers are in bloom from July through Noverwber.
Hyssop's ancient medicinal uses have been lost over the years and the flavor of hyssop in cooking is not pleasant to modern tastes. In fact the only value of the plant is its use as an ornamental.
The plant likes full sun, light welldrained soil and if kept clipped will produce a low growing hedge. The stems do not die down in winter, hence it is considered* evergreen.
