Special Message To Tobacco Farmers

Prices offered Georgia tobacco far-

mers this past week were extremely

disappointing to me. Opening day

sales averaged only around two cents

per pound above opening day sales

last year, even less the second and

third day of sales and on Thursday,

the fourth day of sales, the average

price was almost one cent per pound

below last year's sales on the fourth

marketing day.

We were concerned about such

a possibility when we opposed Se-

cretary Butz'

10 percent allo-

tment increase

for 1974 follo-

wing a similar

increase

in

1973.

On July 1, fif-

teen days before

the markets op-

___jened, I person-

ally wired all the buying companies

licensed to purchase tobacco in

Georgia, advised them that we had a

good crop and that buyers coming to

Georgia should be prepared to pay

an adequate price to reflect not only

the quality of our crop but the in-

creased cost of production as well.

Needless to say, I was most disappointed when in Statesboro and on other markets on opening day, I saw the low price trend develop. I returned to my office in Atlanta early Tuesday morning and immediately wired the buying companies again, telling them as pointedly as I knew how, that in light of market demands for our tobacco they could, and should, offer a fair and reasonable price for this year's tobacco crop. I advised them further that if they expect an adequate supply of quality tobacco from Georgia they must share in the increased cost of production experienced by every tobacco farmer.
Farm Bureau leaders, NFO leaders and Georgia's congressional delegation have cooperated in every possible way in a combined and continuing effort to get higher prices for this year's tobacco crop and I assure you this fight will be continued.
In my opinion, prices on our flue cured tobacco markets this past week should have averaged at least 12 cents per pound more than they did average, and as this issue of The Bulletin goes to press, I am hopeful that next week's sales will reflect not only a fair price based on quality but a fair price based on cost of production as well.
It seems now that we will have no choice but to demand of Secretary Butz that allotments be discussed for 1975 unless buying companies accept their responsibility and pay our farmers a fair price for the 1974 tobacco crop.

Dear Editor:
I asked my husband to get me some lime for making my pickles and he brought home agricultural lime rather than household lime. Have I ruined my pickles or can I save them and start over?
Name withheld by request
(Editor's note: The County Extension Home Economist advised that agricultural lime does not dissolve well and is only slightly soluble in water. Consequently, you can wash your cucumbers and start over. You should use horticultural hydrated, slaked or builders lime in preparing your pickles. Check the label on the lime bag to be sure it contains calcium hydroxide when pickling.)

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Also known as horseheal, elf dock and scabwort, elecampane was valued by Greeks and Romans for its medicinal powers. According to Roman writings, elecampane is supposed to lift your spirits and "fastenth loose teeth."
Early in the 19th century, elecampane candy was a favorite sweet of English school boys. The candy was eaten before athletic events because it was supposed to strengthen their wind and improve endurance.
The common name horseheal comes from the fact that it has been used by veterinarians to treat pulmonary afflictions in horses.
Elecampane is a member of the daisy family. It grows to about five feet with a stout, deeply furrowed stem. The flowers bloom from July through August, are 3-4 inches across and bright yellow, resembling a double sunflower. The plant is perennial.
Other medicinal properties attributed include its use as an antiseptic, astringent and gentle stimulant. It has long been used in treating coughs, consumption and chronic diseases of the lungs.

2 New Varieties
Of Blueberries
Two new blueberry varieties have been released for propagation to nurserymen by the Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station Tifton, and the Agricultural Research Service USDA.
Bluebelle berries are large, round, light blue and have excellent flavor. The fruit ripens over a relatively long period beginning in mid-season and under favorable conditions they size up well throughout the season, making them an excellent pick-yourown variety.
Climax berries are medium in size, medium dark blue in color, have good flavor and ripen early over a short period.
