Dynamics Of
Humane Society
Now entering its second hundred years, the Atlanta Humane Society has become an integral part of animal welfare, not only in MetroAtlanta but throughout the State. Once merely operating a small shelter for unwanted and homeless dogs and cats, the shelter is now the hub of a multi-phasic organization reaching into humane activities on all fronts.
At the shelter at 981 Howell Mill Road in Atlanta, the So-
ciety cares for over 30,000 animals annually, finding new homes in 1973 for 1 1,700 of these pets. The Shelter is not the 'dog pound' for Fulton County or Atlanta, and these thousands of animals are brought to our shelter by concerned individuals. Not only dogs and cats are cared for, but all

species, including many horses and ponies found wandering loose in the Metro area. In conjunction with the shelter, the veterinary clinic staff cares for animals coming in via our 24 hour ambulance service and brought in by individuals in the lower economic income levels. A spaying program for animals adopted from the shelter is also provided.
In addition to the shelter activities, an adoption center has recently been opened in north Atlanta at 3495 Peachtree Road. Other satellite centers are planned for the near future. Also, through contracts with Douglas and Gwinnett counties, the Society is operating the Animal Control agencies formerly known as dog pounds in these two counties. Through the experience and expertise of the Shelter personnel, these agencies can be operated in a more efficient, economical and humane manner than ever before.
Under the able direction of Bill Newman, our cruelty investigators work closely with local and state agencies throughout Georgia. The Society provides the only full time investigators in the State. Dog and horse cruelty and neglect cases occur daily and take the greatest portion of the investigators' time and efforts. With State laws to back them, the investigators do not tolerate acts of inhumane treatment or overt neglect anywhere in Georgia.
The Society provides educational programs to the school children of Atlanta. Already this school year we have met with over 13,000 children

Think First
Most of us think long and hard before purchasing an item that we will live with for many years. However, this usual rational thought process seems to leave many when it comes to buying a companion animal, whether a dog, cat or pony.
Usually its 'the thing to do' to have a pony for the kids or a dog for the boy. These animals take time, attention, facilities and money. All too often, after a short unhappy experience the animal must be given up, either to some agency or another individual. Many unthinking people simply dump or turn them loose.
So, while these animals to many are an essential part of life, to others they are a millstone around one's neck. THINK before you purchase a living creature do you really want and can you adequately care for it in all respects.
(Editor's note: It has also been noted by the Editors that in recent months the number of people going into the cattle or other livestock business without proper knowledge and training has increased. Before you buy be sure. Be sure you know enough about the animal you are purchasing to buy intelligently. Be sure you know enough about the business to take care of it. Contact your county agent or local veterinarian for assistance.)

New Soybean
To Be Released
,The Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture in conjunction with other state and federal agricultural agencies announced recently the impending release to seed producers of a new soybean variety called Cobb soybeans.
Approximately 400 bushels of Cobb soybeans will be available on a limited basis to farmers in the spring. The Foundation Seed Program, located on Whitehall Road in Athens, operates under the Georgia Seed Development Commission which is part of the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
The new variety is a late maturer that is also resistant to root-knot nematodes. In addition it maintains seed viability better and has yielded well in experiment plots.
Soybean Production
Two Billion Bushels In 1985Nearly Double Present Demand
The Soybean industry anticipates world markets for 2 billion bushels of beans
by 1985, nearly double the present demand.
This unprecedented demand is
challenging growers to plant larger
acreages of soybeans and to examine
present production techniques. To
"help growers achieve advances in
production, ARS scientists are
cooperating on a broad spectrum of
research. Research administered by
ARS, constitutes a concentrated
team approach to getting answers to
the question: How can we step up
soybean yields to match increasing

determinate in growth habit. Once
NITROGEN UTILIZATION
its flower bud is formed there is no further increase in plant height hence little tendency to lodge.
One pu/,/le to be solved is how to
improve nitrogen utilization. About 400 pounds (Ibs.) of nitrogen are
required to produce a 70 bushel per
acre soybean crop. Hut research, in-
volving both soil plots and outdoor
hydroponic units, shows thai neither
nitrogen fertili/.ation nor nitrogen-
fixing bacteria alone can meet the
legume's need for this element at an-
ticipated yield levels. Normally,
symbiotic fixation can provide about
100 Ibs. of nitrogen per acre;
however, high levels of, nitrate fer-
tilization inhibit fixation.
Research is oriented toward
enhancing the compatibility of the
two systems of nitrogen utilization.
Soybean plants lose some ability to
take up and use nitrate at the end of
the growing season a condition
which favors maintaining symbiotic
fixation for higher yields. Perhaps
some new form of nitrogen fertilizer
An undesirable trait of soybean varieties is indeterminate terminal bud growth. Soybeans with this
may be found that is less inhibitory to symbiotic fixation.
NUTRIENTS AND LODGING
trait increase in height throughout the growing season, often sustaining severe lodging with reduced yield.
Improving the crop's ability to use
nutrients may intensify another barrier to higher yields lodging. Plants affected by early lodging form

ficiency. When lodging occurs at
During January every Georgia peanut grower will receive a ballot
which enables him to vote on whether or not to continue the work of the Georgia Peanut Commission.
This referendum is held every
three years and allows peanut growers to voice their opinion on the work the Peanut Commission is doing in the fields of education, promotion and research. The Peanut
Commission is funded completely by Georgia's 22,000 peanut growers
through an assessment fee of $1 per ton of marketed peanuts.
Growers who own, rent, or lease peanut allotments in Georgia are eligible to vote and any grower not receiving a ballot should contact the
early pod set, a highly organized crop canopy is disrupted, causing light to be distributed less uniformly over the total leaf area because of increased mutual shading of leaves. Moreover, the older leaves get more light while many younger, more photo-synthetically active leaves become shaded.
Lodging may also lessen yields by stimulating terminal growth and excessive branching at the expense of seed set.
Also, the effectiveness of 7-inch rows and low plant populations in preventing lodging is being studied. Adequate weed control will be essential for insuring higher yields with narrow rows.

from January 22 through February 20 and it is most important that each

Sassafras was the first plant exported from the New World according to historians. It was regarded as a valuable herb medicinally as well as monetarily and was influential in the establishment of the original London and Plymouth companies in 1606.
The first expeditions to this country discovered sassafras from the Indians and Spaniards. Early writers of, the plant life and geography of America mentioned sassafras numerous times in their accounts of the vegetation to be found on the eastern seaboard and expounded on the plants curative properties. This, of course, made it most desirable in Europe.
Although folklore attributes numerous cures to sassafras including its use as a general tonic, its medicinal value has declined. Sassafras oil, however, is still widely used to flavor other medicines.
Sassafras can be found growing from Maine to Florida and west to the Plains. It is easy to recognize the plant as sassafras is usually a small tree, although large specimens have been found. New shoots sprout from the outstretched roots of the tree so you are likely to find clumps of sassafras growing together. In winter the green bark makes it easy to distinguish the tree. The leaves are unusual as there are three characteristic kinds: antire margins, mitten-shaped and three-lobed. All three kinds can usually be found on the same tree.
Sassafras is a very hardy plant and it is doubtful that you could get rid of it by pulling up a few saplings for roots. It puts up new growth wherever a plant has been removed and seems to thrive when roots are regularly gathered.
Roots can be collected any time of the year but are usually easier in the early spring. All the roots are good but the bigger they are, the more scraping is necessary before they can be made into tea.
To make sassafras tea, put a handful of roots into a kettle with water and boil until it turns a brownishred color. Sweeten to taste and drink hot or iced. You can use the roots several times before the flavor is all gone. The bark can be used in the same manner as roots.
The heavy fragrance of sassafras, especially the roots, acts as a moth repellant as does cedar. A bag of chips packed with winter woolens will keep them fresh smelling and protect them from insects.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Soybean Production
Wednesday, January 16, 1974
(Continued From Page 1)
ted from plots where crops and her-
bicide treatments have been rotated
since 1964.
Scientists are also compiling in-
formation on weed yields, weed seed
content of the soil, and herbicide
residues
plus their effects on
nematodes and other small animal
life in the soil.
EFFECT OF SUNLIGHT
The secrets of photosynthesis is being probed in hopes of increasing soybean yields. Soybeans, compared with plants like corn, sorghum and sugarcane, are inefficient users of sunlight. Photosynthesis in the soybean is retarded by a process called photorespiration wherein the plant, in the presence of light and abundant oxygen, breathes out some carbon dioxide (CO2) that had previously been incorporated in sugars.
Nonphotorespiring soybean plants by applying radiation and other mutagenic agents to seeds are being researched.
CONTENT OF BEANS
Chemical composition, especially 011 and protein content, is an important consideration in the developing new soybean varieties. Analysis of 8,000 to 12,000 seed samples are done annually, mostly in support of uniform tests in a soybean breeding program which the U. S. Regional Soybean Laboratory coordinates with several state agricultural experiment stations. An experimental infrared reflectance method for determining protein, oil, and moisture content of soybeans is also being developed.
Scientists are also paving the way for breeders to develop varieties that produce more oil and protein.
DISEASE CONTROL
Losses to diseases which vary from year to year, but average 1"0 to 12 percent annually 'must be reduced.
New races of insects and diseases constantly evolve so that the plant breeder's work is never finished.
HARVEST LOSSES
Ever since soybean production has become a viable industry it has been beset by significant harvest losses. Today's losses in major soybeanproducing states average 8 to 10 percent of the yield.
Advances in the Federal-State cooperative research will provide the know-how for the nation's farmers in achieving higher soybean yields on about 50 million acres already devoted to the crop, nearly 30 percent of which is exported. These advances will help the industry maintain a steady and growing market and meet world demands for soybeans.

with programs ranging from puppet shows to seminars on endangered species.
Through active participation and involvement in all areas of animal welfare, the Society has become a force in adopting new or changing present laws and regulations, effecting a more humane approach to our fellow creatures.
The "little old lady in tennis shoes" so often portrayed as the typical Humane Society member is passing into history. The part she played was necessary, but now a more professional, less emotional approach are the shoes worn by todays Atlanta Humane Society. Why not join this dynamic group today?
For many years tractor pulls have been sensational. Each year they have become more daring, more challenging and more interesting. You'll have a chance to see 75 of these "Demons of the Dirt" perform inside the Macon Coliseum on February 8-9-10. There will be 12,000 pound giant tractors with enough power to drag a 70,000 pound load, 300 feet down a dirt track. For the show, red Georgia clay will form a three foot deep, 30 foot wide, 300 foot long track, which becomes as hard as concrete. There will be four per formances, Friday, Feb. 8th. at 7:00 P.M., Saturday, Feb. 9th. at 1:00 and 7:00 P.M. and on Sunday, Feb. 10th. at 2:00. Macon is on the national cir cuit and will attract pullers from as far away as Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas and ail the southern states.
