*me,
this
as-
sociation of
the 16 southern
states and its
annual meeting
is important
and vital to
jthe progress of
[agriculture in
[Georgia and the
[south.
Many programs, goals and ideas
can be accomplished and become
realities by working together with
our neighbors who frequently have
the same problems and produce the
same crops that we do.
Knowing and working with the
other Commissioners has enabled me
to call on them for assistance in ac-
complishing programs or passing
national legislation of benefit to
Georgia's agriculture.
At the recent meeting held in
Nashville, Tennessee, 23 resoultions
were introduced and passed. Eleven
of these were sponsored or co-
sponsored by Georgia. (Those spon-
sored by Georgia appear in bold-
faced type.)
Briefly, these included:
(1) A resolution to petition the
U.S. Department of Agriculture to
reinstate the Federal-State
Agriculture Market Improvement
program to foster domestic and
foreign trade.
(2) A resolution in favor of the
total eradication of brucellosis
from the livestock industry of the
states represented, and rejection of
a lesser type program designed
merely to control the disease
leaving this burden upon the
livestock industry of the South and
urging the United States Depart-
ment of Agriculture to work toward
the complete eradication of the
disease.
(3) A resolution stating state in-
spected meat should receive the same
privileges as federally inspected
meats and foreign orgin meat
products and requesting an im-
mediate study of the Wholesome
Meat Act..
(4) A resolution asking
legislation to prohibit any product to
be labeled HONEY or to imply it is
HONEY unless it is a product made
by bees and contains no additives.
(5) A resolution to conduct
research and develop action
programs directed at reducing cer-
tain hazardous bird populations by
any environmentally sound means
and thus decreasing the damage done
to our grain crops.
(6) A resolution urging in-

Tobacco Sales
Country Fair Excitement
Prevades As Markets Open
One of the most exciting and interesting seasons in Georgia agriculture begins next week in south Georgia tobacco sales auctions.
The smell of the leaf, the cry of the auctioneer, the buyers' face as the raising of an eyebrow or nod of the head says "he's buying," the farmers' face as he wat-
ches the price, the rush of the warehouseman and hands as tobacco is loaded, unloaded, weighed, sold and moved . . . offer all the excitement of a country fair, harvest festival and stock market exchange rolled into one.
4-H President
Elected At Meet
At the 41st annual State 4-H Council Meeting held at Rock Eagle recently, Kathy Fales, Hazlehurst, was elected president of Georgia 4-H and chairwoman of the eight-member board which will govern 4-H during the 1974-75 year.
Two vice presidents were elected to serve on the new Board of Directors. They are Dave Lee, College Park, and Ann Patterson, Gumming.
Other 1974-75 members of the Board are Lori Maxey, Irwinton; Stanley Smith, Coolidge; Rebecca Lee West, Dawson; Tim Castellaw, Griffin, and Alan Fain, Fort Valley.
"Community Pride"
Winners Named
A mental health mini-park and courthouse renovations have earned top honors for Stephens and Oconee County 4-H Club members in state Community Pride competition.
Both groups will receive $100 cash awards. The Stephens County Club won first place and will receive an expense paid trip to the 1974 Community Pride workshop to be held in Tifton.
The project aim is to stimulate youth and adults to work toward action programs designed to make their community a better place to live.
Other counties receiving recognition in the project include Bartow, Walton, and Paulding placing third, fourth, and fifth respectively. All of these counties also will receive a $100 cash prize.
This year brings a lot of changes in the marketing system of the bright leaf, but basically the system of buying and selling tobacco has changed less than any crop during the past half century.
BUYING TIME The Georgia-Florida flue cured tobacco belt will have sales opportunity time to move 86.4 million pounds or 40 percent of this year's crop during the first three weeks after tobacco sales begin July 15, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
The sales opportunity time of 28.8 million pounds per week for the first three weeks of the season will require farmers not to hold back but get their tobacco on the floor as fast as possible during these first three weeks.
In the past, sales opportunity time
not used during a given week could be carried over and used in the following week, but this year's new marketing system will not allow this.
All sales opportunity time not used in any given week this year will not be available until the end of the season, if still needed at that time.
After the first three weeks of this year's selling season, weekly sales opportunity time will be cut and the balance stretched out over a much longer marketing period.
QUALITY LEAF In addition, major buying companies have been advised that top quality tobacco will be available earlier this season than during any previous year in Georgia and buyer representatives should be prepared to pay adequate prices for top quality tooacco when Georgia-Florida markets open on July 15. Commissioner Irvin wired the

LP Gas Increase
Causes Concern
Increased costs of propane or LP gas in the middle of the crop production year and the heighth of the tobacco curing season has brought an angry response from Georgia's Commissioner of Agriculture.
A 2.5 cent per gallon increase by Citgo last month and the recent 2 cents per gallon price increase by American just doesn't make sense in light of efforts to control inflation and especially in light of the big profit margins the oil industry has been announcing says Commissioner Tommy Irvin.
Irvin said the increased costs could only result in added consumer costs. According to him, the increases would bear most heavily on tobacco curing in south Georgia at this time, but would be reflected in the costs of producing poultry and the drying and curing of grain, hay and other farm crops this fall and winter.
The Commissioner said the price increases for propane were approved by the Federal Energy Administration. He added that Citgo and American distribute most of the LP gas used in the state's agricultural production.
Georgians Beware
Tree "Doctors"
Home owners around the state should beware of persons offering to "save" the trees and shrubbery in their yards from insect infestations and diseases.
The individuals may offer protection against the Southern Pine Beetle or other pests.
If approached by someone offering services similar to these you should ask them to present their Georgia Pesticide Operator's License. State law requires that operator's carry this card.
If you are in doubt about an individual or a company, check with the Pesticides Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, to confirm if they are licensed by the state. The phone number is 404-6564958. ;
If you contract with an unlicensed individual you have no guarantee that the company is insured or that the company possesses the experience and expertise to do reputable work.
4-H "Horse Weekit
To Be In Athens
Four-H "Boots and Saddles" will muster in Athens at the University of Georgia Coliseum July 14-19. All week 4-H'ers will pursue the finer points of horsemanship in the seventh annual 4-H Horse School.
The public is invited to attend any or all events during the week free of charge.

When you first observe dill, it is
hard to realize that it once was the
tool of magicians and sorcerers to
cast their evil spells. A contrad-
ictory superstition held that boughs
of dillweed hung above the door
would protect a home from witch-
craft. Dill is a finely cut, featnery plant,
similar to fennel but shorter and
smaller. It is an annual and reaches
a height of 3 to 4 feet at maturity
(about 2 months after the seed has
'been sown.)
Dill was used to purify the air in
(banquet halls during feasts and
celebrations. Wreaths were hung
from streamers and the flowering
dill was used as table decorations.
The stems of dill are hollow and
need to be cut back continuously to
keep it coming into flower. It grows
well in full sun and drained garden soil. OilIseed is the dried fruit of the
herb which can be harvested in the
fall when the flowers go to seed.
Dillweed is the dried or fresh,
leaves of the plant. Dill leaves
can be preserved by drying boughs of the plant on newspaper in a hot, dry place, such as the attic,
cleaning out any stems or unwanted
pieces and storing leaves in airtight
containers. ___________Valera Jessee

major tobacco buying companies pointing out that although July 15 is the earliest opening date in history for Georgia-Florida flue cured belt, the quality of this year's crop plus modern methods of bulk curing will see a better quality tobacco available earlier in the season and they should be prepared to pay higher prices than they have normally paid so early in the season.

Pickling Salt
.May Be Scarce
Pure granulated salt, sold as pickling salt, or flake salt, may be difficult to find for canning and pickling. If so, you can look for Kosher salt. This is salt with polysorbate 80 (a non-caking agent).
Reasons for avoiding iodized salt ,is that iodine may cause discoloration. Salt with calcium compounds such as meat curing salt (calcium chlorate added) may neutralize the acid solution when fermenting pickles.
Ice cream salt is crushed rock salt so is high in impurities. It is not poisonous. Since ice cream salt probably is high in calcium, it should not be used for fermenting pickles
