Sierra Club For Agriculture

"Everybody know$ that conserva-

tionists are a bunch of nuts who op-

pose all progress, and want us to go

back to living in caves". Now, that is

not entirely accurate.

What about the rest of it? Well,

maybe the average Sierra Club mem-

ber is against progress

if

"progress" means paving the world

with concrete, or running the rivers

in culverts, or covering the moun-

tains with motels.

And maybe the Sierra Club mem-

bers do sleep in caves, and in tents,

and even sometimes spread their

sleeping bags right out in the open.

(Our guest columnist this week is Alastair M. Black, A.I.A., Assoc. A.I.P., Chairman, Sierra Club, Chattahoochee Chapter, Metro Atlanta Group 1600 Tullie Circle N. ., Suite 101, Atlanta 30329.)__________
But one of America's biggest industries is the manufacture of camping gear, so a lot of other people must go camping, too.
Surely anyone who is familiar with rural life can understand what the Sierra Club member is looking for. He feels the need to leave artificial things, and to renew himself in natural surroundings, where there is real, weather, and real leaves, and non-chlorinated water. Such a periodic renewal, he believes, makes him a better citizen certainly it makes him a more comfortable citizen.
The farmer already lives in intimate contact with natural realities. He is involved daily with natural process. He is completely aware of the majestic march of the seasons, and is very respectful of nature's capacity for self-renewal.
The Club opposes damaging, exploitative uses of natural resources, but it does not demand a return to mule-powered plowing and kerosene lanterns. The modern farmer is a practicing conservationist, planning so that there will always be rich harvest in the future. Similarly, the Sierra Club is concerned that we preserve our wild places mountains, rivers, marshes, coastlands so that there will always be rich, healthy wilderness retreats, where people can renew themselves for more successful living.
The purpose of the Sierra Club is "to explore, enjoy and protect the nation's forests, waters, wildlife and wilderness..." All these are threatened by various attempts to take quick, immediate profits. Those of us who understand that there must be patience that there must be an allowance for time between planting and reaping must join together to protect our heritage.

Longer Daylight Hours

Bring Gardening Pleasure

Summer-like temperatures have begun to push the balmy spring like weather

into the background. With the longer daylight hours gardeners are now able to

delay gardening until late afternoon or early evening when temperatures

become p- leasant.

Market Contract Awarded To Crisp
An $85,000 contract has been awarded to Crisp County by the State Highway Board for resurfacing the Farmers Market at Cordele.
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said he was most pleased that the contract had been given to the county as it would benefit the entire area and especially the watermelon farmers who utilize the market.
County Commissioners, Market officials, State Representative Howard Rainey and farmers have expressed their approval of the contract and the work that is scheduled to begin in the next few days.
Nitrogen Shortage
Prompts Meeting
More than two dozen representatives of major fertilizer manufacturers that supply Georgia farmers met in the Department of Agriculture last week to discuss the critical nitrogen shortage.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin called the meeting in an effort to assist Georgia corn farmers get more of the nitrogen desperately needed for this year's corn crop to mature.
All of the manufacturers reported that they are shipping direct from production as there is no reserve on hand.
Commissioner Irvin urged manufacturers and dealers to cooperate in trying to ship first to the areas of the state where the corn was in the stage of "most need" for nitrogen.

gardening needs a careful approach. Some tasks such as weeding, fertilizing, planting and general grooming of plants are ideally suited to this period of the day. There are two activities that are best accomplished earlier in the day.
They are spraying for insect and disease prevention or control and watering. In case you are wondering about these two very important activities let's look at them more closely.
Both spraying and watering results in wetting the foliage and stems of plants or in the case of watering raises the humidity. At this time of year with warm temperatures, a high humidity from watering or rains provides ideal conditions for the development of disease problems.
Wise gardeners will take advantage of early morning hours to water and spray so that the foliage of shrubs, flowers and lawn grasses will have time to dry before night-time. Your chances of disease problems are reduced. Think about this the next time you start to set up and operate your lawn sprinkler at 8:00 p.m.
Some gardeners are experiencing difficulty with lawns. Some of these difficulties result from infrequent moving, failure to remove the grass clippings from the lawn area, and in the case of fescue and cool season mixtures, failure to begin to raise the mowing height.
Cool season grasses should be mowed at a height of 2 inches or more. As daytime temperatures continue to climb so should the mowing

Number 22
Bangs Indemnity
Funds Exhausted State agricultural officials have been advised that federal funds for indemnifying cattle producers whose animals are confirmed as infected with brucellosis or TB are exhausted.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said he has been in touch with Washington to determine what, if anything, can be done to insure continued indemnity payments to help prevent farmer losses, but information he has to date indicates no federal funds will be available for the program until after, the beginning of the new fiscal year July 1.
There is no known TB infection in cattle in Georgia at this time but brucellosis reactors are fairly common. All cattle moving through sales barns are tested for brucellosis, which is transmissable to humans as undulant fever. .When diseased animals are found, they are traced back to the farm of origin and all cattle on the farm are quarantined and tested. Diseased animals are branded and sent directly to slaughter.
Under the indemnity program the state has been paying $5 per head with an additional $50 per head paid by federal on grade animals. For purebred breeding animals, the state pays $10 per head and the federal $100.
"With today's cattle prices, lack of federal indemnity funds represents a serious economic blow to the cattle producer who discovers brucellosis or bangs disease in his herd and must send his animals to slaughter," Irvin said.
The Commissioner added that the Animal Health Division of the State Department of Agriculture is exploring every possibility to determine what can be done to prevent

Cotauuuj?

Once prescribed by the ancient

Greeks to bring color to faces of

girls with pale complexions,

caraway is one of the most ancient

herbs known to man. Evidence has

been found that it was used by the

Neolithic Swiss Lake Dwellers and

it was referred to in the Medical

Papyrus of Thebes, dated 1552 B. C.

Caraway is named for its place of

origin, an ancient district in Asia

Minor known as Caria.

Ancient herbalists recommended

caraway to "restoreth the hair

where it has fallen away." The

seeds, after having been powdered

in a mortar, have also been used as

poultice to treat bruises. The

crushed seeds taken in hot water or

milk are also said to be good for

colic and colds.

The greatest value of caraway

today, though, is its use in cooking.

Early German settlers brought

caraway to this country as it was a

favorite in preparing their breads,

borsch and sauerbraten. The seeds

found in rye bread are caraway and

it is the "rye" smell and flavor that is

associated with this herb.

Caraway is a biennial, growing

the first year and flowering the

second. The foliage is delicate and

lacy like most other members of the

Carrot or Umbelliferae family. The

plant reaches a height of about two

feet and bears clusters of pinkish or

white flowers.

It is a relatively easy herb to grow,

flourishing in a well-drained soil,

sunny location and hardy to minus

30 degrees.

such financial loss until federal funds become available again. The state will continue to pay its indemnity, he said.
Since the beginning of this fiscal year, July 1973 through the May 17, 1974 cut-off date on federal monies, Georgia has paid out $24,182 in brucellosis indemnity funds and federal funds have totaled $213,600.
Bait Shortage

For Fire Ants

Aerial operations to eradicate fire ant infestations in Berrien, Clinch and Atkinson Counties will not be completed this spring because of a shortage of Mirex fire ant bait.
Operations were begun in March to knock out the ant pest over almost a million acres including portions of Seminole, Decatur, Echols, Lowndes, Brooks, Berrien, Clinch and Atkinson Counties.
The operations were begun and proceeded smoothly until a few days ago when agricultural officials were advised that a shortage of corn cobs had seriously affected the production of corn cob grits, the bait carrying agent, and Allied Chemical Company, manufacturers of Mirex, would be unable to supply enough bait to complete this spring's contracts in Georgia and other states.
The treatments have been completed in Seminole, Decatur, Echols, Lowndes and Brooks, but the shortage of Mirex has grounded treating aircraft before completion of work in Berrien, Clinch and Atkinson Coun-
ties.

Gardening
(From Page 1)
height continue to be raised until you are mowing fescue, mixtures and bluegrass at about 4 inches by the time real hot weather arrives. Bermuda and centipede may still be cut quite low. Zoysia and St. Augustine should be cut at its normal cutting height.
Watch out for snails and slugs on your flowers and vegetable plants. These pests have become quite active during recent weeks. Use your snail or slug pellets or meal. Generously sprinkle them around your plants. If the pellets or meal become wet from rain or watering you will need to repeat the application because they lose their effectiveness and snails and slugs just don't seem to like soggy bait.
Keep the unused portion lightly sealed in the container and by all means keep out of reach of youngsters and pets. If possible keep all insecticides under lock and key and there will be no risk of accidents.
Roses and daylilies have been most beautiful. It's still not too late to enjoy them. Look at yours, your neighbors, or at municipal plantings for new ideas of color, vigor and overall beauty.

Please cooperate when contacted.

Out of a possible 780 points, they scored 700, surpassing all past performances by Georgia teams.
Team members were: Andy White, Steve Lee, John Griner, of Watkinsville, and Ray Gilbert, Madison.

Straight Line

Would you please give me any information you have as to the length of time one could reasonably expect his home to remain free of termites after commercial treatment? Is the yearly "re-inspection fee" charged by pest controllers after the initial treatment really a bargain at about 10 percent of the original fee?
J. G., Newnan

Tests conducted by the Forest Service in Mississippi show that in-

secticides used in termite control continue to be effective against in-

festation after more than 15 years. Although the chemical is apparently

stable, there is the possibility of termites finding even a fraction of an

inch of untreated soil and regaining entrance. Since a contract assures

retreatment by the company if reinfestation occurs, it is a kind of in-

surance.which can be renewed annually depending upon the contract

holder's decision.

I am sending a sample of a plant that comes up in my flower bed. I would like to know if it is edible. I thought at first it was a turnip.
Mrs. W. L., Eastman

The plant you submitted is either Wild Radish, (Rephanus raphanistrum L.), or Wild Mustard, (Brassica kaber). The leaves of Wild Mustard and Wild Radish may be used in the same way as those of the cultivated radish and m*us*ta*rd*.
I am submitting a box containing some things that appear to be eggs. I dug them up while spading my garden. I am reasonably certain that they are an abomination of some kind as I never find anything good. Can you tell me what they are?
R. H., Atlanta

The pellets you sent in are not egg cases at all, but are styrofoam balls that are used quite frequently for assistance in rooting and growing plants. They tend to keep the soil aerated and porous.

I am sending some red berries that are all over my place. What are they and are they poisonous?
Mrs. L. J., Stone Mountain

The berries appear to be from the Strawberry weed of Five Fingers, (Potentilla canadensis L.). They are not poisonous but they are not
very tasty either. The berry is composed mostly of seeds and there is very little pulp.

Home Canning
Meat and Poultry
Meats are food products that we usually do not think about canning. We always freeze meat. Meats can be safely canned and can result in good products. We don't always have a food freezer or adequate freezer storage to take advantage of meat specials.
Home canning of meat helps you take advantage of the specials; therefore, it helps you save money.
Home canned meats can really be convenience foods. Most homemakers keep canned boned chicken handy for making quick casseroles. Buying chicken on sale and canning it yourself can really result in a savings, as well as being convenient.
For more information on canning meats and poultry, contact your county home economist.
Parasite Booklet
For Swine Released
A new booklet containing information on parasite control in hogs has been issued by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service Entomology department. The booklet, Extension Entomology Bulletin No. 725, is entitled "Control External Parasites on Hogs".
Copies of the new booklet may be obtained from your county extension agent.
