Soil Is Life
Conserve It
I hear it said too many times that soil conservation and soil stewardship is the farmer's job.
Too often I have heard the city dweller say that he can do nothing_about^jour natural resources.
^ owns no land, [ he will say, and \ has no influence lover those who I do.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
With the May 19-26 observance of Soil Stewardship Week this year goes the need to involve every man, woman and child in caring for the earth which is their home. If every man, in his own little way, supported efforts to preserve and
(Our guest columnist this week is Rufus Coody, Chairman, Georgia State Soil and Water Conservation Committee, Room 204, 745 Prince Avenue, Athens 30601.)_______
protect what's left of the Nation's soil, then friends, neighbors, relatives and politicians would be compelled to join in. While it's true that no man is an island, those dedicated to conservation have until recently had reason to feel that way. Fortunately, this is changing.
I believe we can thank the energy crisis for shaking many complacent and uninvolved people into the stark realization that, if they want to eat, they have got to help! They have depended too long on the efforts of the individua.1 landowners, their Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors and the Federal Government.
How can Mr. Everyman help? Let me cite the example of the farmer who is unfortunate enough to have his few hundred acres in the path of a city's growth. He has already been blasted by doubling and tripling feed and fertilizer costs and his taxes are now doing the same thing. How can he keep the land and farm it without profits? Another way to phrase this is: how can the farmer produce food
that Mr. Everyman can afford? The answer is that he can produce
only with Mr. Everyman's vote, influence, and readiness to take a share of the tax and cost burdens.
Remember that soil stewardship is soil management. Management demands knowledge, responsibility, finances and dedication. The time has come when the farmer and-soil conservation people at all levels can no longer do it alone.
And no one should be allowed to forget that soil is life. When it goes, you go.

'A Different Place
Soil Stewardship Week

Needs Your Participation

Soil Stewardship week is being observed throughout Georgia and the nation this week, May 19-26, with the well based admonition to observe and treat the
earth as a Godgiven trust to all mankind. The theme of this year's observance is "A Different Place."

Tobacco Growers
Must Pick Warehouse
Flue-cured tobacco producers growing tobacco this year for market must designate by June 14 the warehouse (s) and the pounds they wish to market at each warehouse in order to establish eligibility for price support.
This is a new federal program, important to flue-cured growers who should go by the county ASCS office to get the details.

According to historians, the ob-

servance of Soil Stewardship began

about 500 AD when widespread

hunger and crop failure in France

caused the Bishop of Vienne to begin

a period of Rogation Days. By the

end of the eighth century, the church

adopted the custom formally and it

was practiced around the world.

In the United States, observance of

soil stewardship traces its beginnings

to these Rogation Days. Churches in

parts of the South began in the early

1900's to set aside the fifth Sunday

after Easter as Soil and Soul Sunday.

Soil Stewardship Week has been

sponsored in Georgia by the State

Soil and Water Conservation Com-

mittee and the Georgia Association

of Conservation District Supervisors

for 20 years.

Facts to remember during this

week are:

There are nearly 55,000 farm

ponds in Georgia encompassing

nearly 175,000 acres of land under

water.

***

The Soil Conservation Service of

the USDA has furnished technical

assistance in the development of

conservation plans for nearly 40

years.

****

In Georgia, there are 324 unpaid supervisors who give leadership through the programs of the 27 Soil and Water Co*nse* rv*at*ion Districts.

Commissioner Tommy Irvin and Bill Robinson of Harland Check Co. point to the Georgia Farm Products emblem and the phrase "Agriculture is
Georgia's Largest Industry" which are both now available through Harland on all personal and business checks. The idea is to urge agribusiness firms, producers and individuals to use this emblem on their checks in order to
show the amount of money generated from Georgia agriculture. (Over $5 billion per year).

One ton per acre per year is an acceptable yield of sediment from croplands. An acre of exposed land can yield 250 *to*ns* p*er year.
The Soil Stewardship observance began as "Rogation Days" more than 1500 years ago* *in *Fr*ance.
Every square foot of Georgia's 37.3 million acres is in one of 27 Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Dear Editor:

The former Savannah Cotton Exchange, a famous land

mark, is being converted into a Cotton Museum which will

reflect Georgia's agricultural development from 1733 to the

present.

'

Special exhibits will feature

JL

major agricultural exports

through the great port of

Savannah, including cotton,

rice, indigo, tobacco, sugar,

timber, rosin and turpentine.

In addition, farm tools and

equipment used in the early

days, old photographs, ar

tifacts, and documents are

being sought.

This new Cotton Museum

presents an opportunity to

help preserve Georgia's

glorious agricultural history in

the actual building where cot

ton prices were established

for the whole world back when

Cotton was King.

We are appealing to all Georgians to sift through their at tics, tool sheds, strong boxes and old photo albums for documents, photographs, artifacts and old farm tools that have been handed down through past generations. Donors names will be affixed to the historical items donated.

Wind 9ft Buitwel?
Legend reports that King Chaba of Hungary applied burnet leaves to the wounds of his army of 15,000 and that a tea made from burnet leaves was given to American Revolutionary soldiers the night before they entered battle to keep them from bleeding to death if wounded. The truth of the story is that burnet has been used for centuries as a natural coagulant when applied to cuts and wounds.
Sanguisorba minor or canadensis is a perennial plant which grows wild throughout this country anywhere it can find well drained soil and full sun. It self-sows readily and is treated as a weed in most localities.
Burnet is a member of the rose family but smells nothing like its attractive relative; in fact, burnet is valued for its cucumber-like smell and flavor. Like borage, burnet leaves are often added to salads for a cucumber flavor without the side effects.

GERM GROWTH Under ideal conditions, one germ produces 28 trillion others within 24 hours, according to home economists at the Cooperative Extension Service.

FREEZING CELERY Want to freeze celery? Boil it for three minutes, cool promptly and drain. Then put it in the freezer, say home economists at the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
WEEDS A PROBLEM
A survey of soybean growers in Georgia revealed that weed control is the number one management problem in soybean production. Over 88 per cent of the growers used one or more herbicides and the same percentage used cultivation alone or in combination with herbicides.
JUNK CAUSES FIRES
Don't hoard bundles of old magazines and newspapers, piles of oily, dirty rags or pieces of old furniture. Sell them or give them away. Junk is nothing more than fuel for a household fire, say home economists at the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
