GAEHE Serves
All Georgians
The Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists is primarily interested in promoting home economics work in Georgia. I'd like to tell you about Extension Home Economists and the work they do.
There is an opportunity for them to serve all walks of life because their areas of concern are broad. Their intent is to distribute home economics information to all people. This includes youth, young families, senior citizens, disadvantaged families and other adults.
(Our guest columnist this week is Mrs. Carolyn M. Wingate, President, Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists, Reidsville
30453.)__________________
Every county home economics program is somewhat alike and yet different, because the programs are planned with the interests and needs of the people in mind.
The Extension Home Economist carries information to the people through various channels. She may: teach a series of lessons on one topic; conduct a workshop; present requested programs to civic clubs or other groups or furnish them a do-ityourself program packet; hold thirtyminute program in office building or other suitable place for working women during lunch hour; send monthly newsletters containing home economics information and announcements of special events; and answer questions and pass out information in day-to-day personal contacts.
Extension home economists also hold "area" programs drawing clientele from surrounding counties. This is a cooperative effort of 3 or 4 home economists. Often state subject matter specialists and other resource people are called in to present or help with the program.
Working with 4-H and other youth is another method used by extension home economists to get information to family members. Not only do the 4-H'ers learn through their subject matter projects but hopefully the whole family becomes involved. Often parents become volunteer leaders and furnish enthusiastic leadership in their communities.
Program content is as varied as the channels through which it reaches the people. Subjects may range from "Dainty Mechanics" to "Making Your Will" and from "Landscaping Your Home" to "Weight Off Wisely".
Counties where the services of the Extension Home Economists are not utilized to the fullest are the losers. Home economists are continually receiving training in order to bring the very latest research information and programs to the people. This is their job. They are usually located in the courthouse or federal building in the county.

Elusive Goal - Hybrid Soybean
May Soon Be Reality For Farmers
For years plant breeders have pressed toward an elusive goal: a hybrid
soybean that would overcome current yield and,-production barriers. A recent discovery by a plant breeder brings the goal a step nearer.
Dr. Brim inspects the foliage of experimental soybean lines for insect damage. Success of this research hinges on pollination by insects, precluding the use of pesticides._________________
"Horses A to Z"
At Stone Mtn.
Every aspect of horsemanship will be covered in horse and horsemanship courses at Stone Mountain this summer.
Appropriately titled "Horses A to Z", the courses include 5-day sessions on horse management and training, riding school instruction and management, and student equitation, June 10-14. All of these courses will be held at Stone Mountain State Park.
A brochure and further information on the summer horse program is available to interested individuals by writing to M. L. Nogueras, Director, Horses A to Z, 2320 Lawrenceville Highway, Apt. No. 9, Decatur, Georgia 30033.
Grow Vegetables For Landscaping
Don't shy away from gardening this summer just because you have limited space.
Many vegetables have attractive foliage and shape characteristics that make them ideal landscape additions, says Paul Colditz, horticulturist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
That means a few well-tended vegetable plants can bring as many compliments as a rose bush. What's more, you can eat vegetables while roses have little appetite appeal. Unless, of course, you happen to be an insect.
You can use "landscape" vegetables several ways. For example, low growers like spinach and leaf lettuce lend themselves to border

Brim and colleagues at the North
Carolina Agricultural Experiment
Station, Raleigh, have demonstrated
the inheritance of male sterility in
soybeans, and have developed a
soybean line possessing the male-
sterile character.
Although it is not the soybean
needed to vitalize economic com-
mercial production, it does have the
male-sterile character needed for
developing new plant material.
Here's how plant breeders exploit
the male-sterile character. Normally,
soybeans are self-pollinating: that is,
each flower has a fertile male and
female organ. The pollen is shed and
fertilization occurs before the flower
opens.
In order to generate the variability
needed for selection that is not
generated with self-pollination,
flowers must be hand-pollinated.
This requires removal of pollen that

Farmers Beware
Illegal Calves
South Georgia farmers are being warned that the purchase of baby calves from unknown herds could lead to a lot of trouble and expense.
According to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, illegal traffic in the movement of baby calves, especially dairy animals, from quarantined herds in Florida across the Georgia line is being scrutinized closely by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
"Some cow jockeys are buying baby calves from Florida dairy herds, hauling them into Georgia illegally and peddling them to Georgia farmers and livestock producers," Irvin said.
"Most of these calves are coming
from herds that are under disease quarantine and their purchase could lead to serious troubles for Georgia cattlemen," he added.
The tracing of such animals to any

Farm Equipment
Ads To Be Checked
The editors of the Farmers and
Consumers Market Bulletin are
proud of the caliber of its advertisers
and its readers and customers. We
believe the readers and customers of
the Bulletin should be able to order
from its pages with confidence.
When situations occur that in-
dicate that some of our advertisers
are not living up to their obligations,
or to the rules and regulations gover-
ning our publication, we are con-
cerned.
The Market Bulletin was
established to assist the individual,
farmer and consumer in buying and
selling products of the farm or items
necessary for the farm and home. It
was not and is not a publication for
commercial enterprises and dealers
to advertise.
We have recently received
numerous reports from individuals
responding to equipment ads in the
Bulletin, that the person advertising
the equipment owned a dealership,
had not used the equipment per-
sonally on his own farm, or had
purchased the equipment merely for
the purpose of reselling it through
the Market Bulletin.
This is in direct violation of our
rules. Each week at the beginning
of the farm machinery and equip-
ment for sale column, the following
warning appears:
Only that farm machinery which
has been used in an individual far-
ming operation and is being sold
by that same individual may be ad-
vertised in this column. The same
general rule applies to those wan-
ting equipment in that they should
be seeking equipment for their own
individual farm. Our rules and
regulations prohibit dealers and
commercial enterprises from ad-
vertising.
If this regulation continues to be
ignored by a few individuals who are
buying and selling equipment for
profit, the editors feel obliged to
protect the customers of the Market
Bulletin and the legitimate dealers
who do not try to advertise with us
by taking more stringent steps to en-
force this regulation.
Presently we have Department of
Agriculture inspectors calling on
many of our equipment advertisers
checking to see if they are com-
mercial dealers. We want your cooperation. We ap-
preciate your suggestions. Let's keep the Georgia Farmers and Con-
sumers Market Bulletin a tine,
dependable publication, serving the

Dear Editor:
I noticed in the "What Is" column some months back you seemed to be at a loss as to how foxglove got its name.
The following is an excerpt from Potter's New Cyclopedia of Botanical Drugs and Preparations about foxglove (Digitalis Purpurea, Linn.): "According to Prior, Popular Names of British Plants, the name foxglove is derived from the Anglo-Saxon, Foxes-glow, an ancient musical instrument with hanging bells."

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, May 1, 1974
; Straight Line (
Also known as Jamaica pepper, allspice is a member of the myrtle family. The tree is so common to
Jamaica that the island practically has a monopoly on the spice.
Although the name implies that it is a combination of several different spices, it is actually an individual spice and came by its name due to the flavor which resembles a mix
ture of cloves, cinnamon and nut meg.
Allspice is most commonly used in preparation of relishes and
meats, especially pot roast. Baked and stewed fruits, preserved fruits and tomato dishes are enhanced
by the addition of the spice. The dried unripe fruit of the
Pimenta (Pimento) tree is picked
green and dried in the sun. After wrinkling, they turn a reddish brown which intensifies their flavor and aroma.

Grow Vegetables
(Continued from page 1)
planting along walks, driveways or flower beds.
Other vegetables, like beans, can scale a trellis or wall to provide a privacy screen. And "showy" varieties like eggplant can be used as specimen plants to attract attention to special landscape areas.
Low-growing vegetables suitable for borders include leaf lettuce, mustard, spinach and green onions. Since all are cool season vegetables, you can plant them outdoors now in all sections of Georgia.
Low-growing vegetables are particularly good choices if you're running short on sunshine.
Throughout the growing season, you'll also need to supplement rainfall. Water vegetables in early morning if possible, and avoid frequent applications of small amounts of water.
Also, keep an eye out for insect and disease problems. Apply corrective sprays at the first sign of infestation or infection.
For detailed information on spraying or any other gardening procedure contact your county Extension agent. He has free leaflets and booklets complete with planting charts and step-by-step gardening instructions.
Farmers Beware
(Continued from page 1)
Georgia farm would result in the quarantine of all cattle on the farm as well as TB and brucellosis testing of all cattle on the farm at the owner's expense.
Georgia farmers and cattlemen should not buy animals from unknown sources and their cooperation is urged to prevent problems for them in their livestock operation.
Georgia law requires that all calves under six months of age imported from other states must be accompanied by an official Interstate Health Certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian, showing individual identification of such animals and certifying that they did not originate in a brucellosis- or tuberculosis-quarantined herd.
DON'T STORE GAS
It is unwise to store gasoline in or around residences. Not only is it hazardous, it might void insurance.
Stone Mountain Park received a "Good Egg" award in the midst of its annual Great Egg Hunt Easter Sunday. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, (r), who is vice-chairman of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, accepted the award from Georgia Egg Commission General Manager Bill Sanders (1).
Hybrid Soybean
(Continued from page 1)
Fertile lines of experimental soybeans are harvested with a specially designed plot harvester. These soybeans are the progeny of male-sterile and male-fertile crosses that were harvested the year before. may be on the flower and introducing poHen from another source. Pollination by hand is, of course, expensive and time consuming.
In a male-sterile plant the pollen is inviable but the female part of the plant is fertile, so these plants can serve as the female parents in a cross. They cannot pollinate themselves, but can be planted close to malefertile plants and natural crossing will occur.
A plant breeder can therefore avoid hand pollination merely by interplanting the intended male-fertile and male-sterile parents and relying on insects to transfer fertile pollen to the female parent plants.
"With this technique," explains Dr. Brim, "a plant breeder can make more crosses in a year than he could have gotten in a lifetime before." Hand pollination usually produces one to two seeds per cross, but with the male-sterile system, literally hundreds of cross seeds can be obtained at much lower cost to the breeder.
A major question remains: Is there a hybrid soybean? "No," says Dr. Brim, "this is a first, fumbling step, and we have a long way to go." The fact remains, however, that this ARS research advance may make it possible to break down old barriers to improved soybean yields.

We recently noticed a column in our newspaper concerning the control of Japanese Beetles by the use of a powder containing Milky Disease Spores. We wonder if you can tell us where to buy it. These beetles have been doing heavy damage to gardens and orchards in our area.

The substance containing Milky Disease Spores (Doom) is available at H. G. Hastings Company, P. O. *Bo*x*4088, Atlanta, Georgia 30302.
Will the Norwegian Pine grow in this area? What kind of soil, plant food and protection would it require?
T. B., Cedartown
The Georgia Forestry Commission advises that the Norwegian Pine, (Pinus resinosa), will only grow well in the Cedartown area if it is cared for like a row-crop plant. While it can withstand temperature extremes of -60 F. to + 105 F., this is true only for air temperature; high soil tem perature and summer drought restrict its natural range to the upper Nor theastern U. S. In addition it needs a light, acid, sandy soil with a silt and clay content ranging from 10% to 40%. The soil Ph ranges from 4.5 to 6.0 which can be found in many Georgia soils; particularly if they have been cultivated recently. The tree itself is considered extremely hardy and while it can stand less competition from other plants than the white pine, it will outgrow the white pine when free from any competition. While it does grow naturally as far south as West Virginia it does so only at altitudes above 3800 feet. Dr. Turner Davis of the Experiment Station, Experiment, Georgia, has done a great deal of work on the problems of growing trees beyond their natural range in Georgia. If you contact him or his office, they will be glad to share their experience with you.
