____ Support of the other members of the General Assembly, their cooperation and efforts, made the passage of these bills possible. Bills directly effecting agriculture and consumers of agriculture products include:
Senate Bill 472 exempts from any registration or licensing requirement, farm trailers which weigh less than 4000 pounds when empty, regardless of the number of wheels, and also trailers used primarily to transport fertilizer to the farm.
Senate bill 476 brings rabbits under the Georgia meat inspection laws when they are being slaughtered for human consumption.
Senate bill 560 known as "The Milk Bill" requires the filling of wholesale price lists of fluid milk and fluid milk products with the Commissioner of Agriculture.
House Bill 1262 sets up a new program of registering marks and brands for livestock in the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
House Bill 1263 makes the crime of livestock theft a felony.
House Bill 1321 amends the Georgia tobacco sales warehouse law to permit the Commissioner of Agriculture to take into consideration each individual warehouseman's past record of handling Georgia grown and out of state tobacco when issuing license and allocating sales opportunity. This bill also directs the Commissioner to license each company buying tobacco on the Georgia tobacco auction market.

Almost all Georgia homeowners eventually encounter problems with shrubs that grow too large and too tall for the location in which they were planted.

nationally as Weights and Measures Week. This is when attention is
focused on the work of the weights and measures inspectors, regardless of the name by which the service is known. The basic job of the inspector is to see that honesty is the third party in every business transaction where weights and measures functions are involved.
At first, all the care seemed to be
to no avail as the plants appeared to grow one leaf at a time. By the third year, the well established root system
causes the faster growth to be apparent, and by the fifth or sixth year, most shrubs look just right in the landscape.
After this, we find that even with several shearings a year, it is difficult

If you acquired new or used depreciable property such as machinery, equipment, or breeding livestock during I 973 for use in your farm business you may qualify for the investment credit. It is important to claim investment credit if you qualify, because the credit reduces your tax on a dollar for dollar basis.
In order to qualify, the property must be depreciable, must have a
useful life of at least three years and must be placed in service during the year. However, the property must have an expected useful life of seven years or more to qualify for the 7% credit on the entire investment. If the useful life is 5 to 7 years, only twothirds of the investment qualifies for the credit. For property with a useful life of three to five years, the credit is allowed on only one-third of the investment. The useful life used for computing the investment credit
must be the same as the life used for calculating depreciation.
A number of different types of farm property qualify for the investment credit including machinery, equipment, trucks, fences, and storage facilities such as silos and grain bins. Also, livestock and income producing orchards and groves qualify for the investment credit.
The amount of the credit that can be used in any year is limited to the tax liability for that year. Any credit unused in the current year can be

Cotton Yield
Record In '73
Georgia cotton growers produced an all time record yield in 1973. The Georgia Crop Reporting Service preliminary estimate lists the average yield at 506 Ibs. of lint per acre (net weight).
According to Charles Roland, Extension cotton agronomist, the. previous state record was 467 Ibs. Prior to net weight standards, the 1973 record yield would have been approximately 527 pounds.
Total value of the Georgia cotton crop including income from seed was 153 million dollars.

Dear Editor:
You sure did play a trick on all your readers a few weeks ago by printing ads in the BULLETIN that were false. We even drove to Surrency, Georgia, to see about that land for $20 an acre and it was a lot of trouble for nothing.
I don't think you should have printed something like that unless you labeled it an example and not meant to be taken as true.

Dear Readers:
We certainly apologize for confusing so many of you when we reprinted notices from early BULLETINS on page 2 of the February 13th - 100th Anniversary edition of the MARKET BULLETIN.
Many people wrote wanting to join the club that was for med in the early 1920's by the Game and Fish Commission, others wanted items from these ads and few even made un necessary trips to investigate land and other ads for sale.
We did not intend to mislead or cause anyone any in convenience. Our sole purpose was to show the contrast of these old ads and the prices with the ones that are ad vertised in today's BULLETIN.

Seasoning to taste
Dumplings
Cold water
Gravy
Put the chicken in a large pot and cover with cold water and
season to taste. Cover the pot; bring to a boil and then sim
mer until chicken is tender. Pour off 2 to 3 cups broth to
make a separate gravy. Make the dumplings and drape them
across the chicken (do-not drop in the broth). Cover the ket
tle and steam the dumplings 12 to 15 minutes, or until tender.
Lift out the dumplings into a bowl, and pour the gravy over
them. Serve with the carved chicken.
DUMPLINGS
1 cup flour
2 Tbsps. shortening
1 1/2 tsps. baking powder 1/2 cup milk
1/2 tsp. salt
Mix dry ingredients and shortening; stir in the milk. Roll the
dough out on floured board to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into
strips about 1-inch wide. Drape the dumpling over the
chicken as directed.
GRAVY
3 cups chicken broth,
3 Tbsps. flour
fat not skimmed
Water
1 Tbsp. butter if broth
Salt and pepper
not rich enough with
chicken fat
Heat the broth in a skillet. Add butter if necessary. Mix the
flour with enough water to make a thin paste. Stir flour mix
ture into broth; season to taste with salt and pepper. Cook
the gravy until it is as thick as heavy cream. Pour over the
dumplings.
CORNCOB JELLY
12 bright red cobs
1 pkg. pectin
3 pts. water
3 cups sugar
Boil broken cobs in the water for 30 minutes. Remove from
heat and strain the liquid. If not 3 cups, add enough water to
make 3 cups. Add pectin and bring to a rolling boil. Add
sugar and boil 2 to 3 minutes or until jelly stage. The finished
product tastes a lot like apple jelly, has an attractive, reddish
color.

Humor
'Round The Barn
Just before press time, an employee spilled some type 'that had to do with two stories, one about a public sale, the other about a wedding. The editor asked the printer to pick up the type and re-proof it before placing it in page form to be printed. The printer obliged but did not proof the finished story. The editor therefore did not know of the mixup until an angry preacher and the bride's family appeared in her of fice in a storm. The article as it appeared in the paper read: "William Smith and Miss Lucy Anderson were disposed at public auction at my barn, three miles west, a beautiful cluster of white calves with red roses on her shoulder, before a background of farm implements too numerous to mention, in the presence of about seventy guests, including six cows, five goats, six mules and one buggy. The Reverend Jackson tied the nuptial knot with 200 feet of grass rope and the bridal couple left on a gang plow for an extended trip with terms to suit purchasers. They will return to be near friends with one good baby buggy and a few kit chen utensils to responsible parties and some 500 chickens."

Prune Shrubs
(Continued From Page 1)
new growth begins or is just beginning is the only period of the year when severe pruning can be safely accomplished. In South Georgia late February and early March is a desirable period. In northern half of the state early March is the best time to prune heavily.
In cutting the large limbs, it is important to prevent injury to the bark. A fine-tooth saw is the best tool to use for making clean cuts. Limbs less than one inch in diameter can be easily cut with lopping shears. The cut surfaces on all stumps should be sprayed or painted with a commercial tree wound compound. These materials are readily available at most nurseries or garden centers.
Satisfactory results will depend greatly upon adequate soil moisture to support new growth; therefore, one should plan to water at least weekly during dry periods in the spring, summer and fall months. A mulch around the pruned plants will also be beneficial in preserving soil moisture. Fertilizing at a normal rate is advisable. Extra heavy applications are likely to injure the plants instead of promoting additional growth.
Some final advice - don't become discouraged when new growth is not evident immediately. The dormant buds must become active and break through the bark before noticeable growth can begin. Four to six weeks may be required for this to occur. After the small buds along the stems become evident, growth will proceed at a rapid rate, providing that ample soil moisture is present.
The rate of growth will depend, of course, upon the original size of the cut-back shrub. A healthy, six-foot Japanese holly is often 18 to 24 inches tall at the end of the first growing season following pruning.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
Tax Advice
(Continued From Page I)
carried back three years and then forward for seven years. There is no limit on the amount of new property that can be taken into account in figuring investment credit for any one year. However, there is a limit of $50,000 on the cost of used property that qualifies for the credit in any one year.
The investment credit is calculated on Form 3468 and then it is subtracted directly from tax due on Form 1040, thus it reduces tax dollar for dollar.
For example, consider a farmer who has purchased qualifying property with a useful life of seven years or more costing $10,000. His investment credit would be $700 (7% of $10,000). Assume his tax liability was $1 200 before the credit. In this case he would reduce his tax liability by $700 and pay only $500 in income tax for the year.
Purchased dairy or breeding livestock, except horses, are eligible for investment credit. However, a special rule states that if substantially identical livestock has been sold during a one-year period beginning six months before other livestock is acquired, the cost of the acquired livestock is to be reduced by the amount realized on the sale of the identical livestock.
For purposes of investment credit, breeding or dairy livestock would be considered as new property if the animals had not been used for breeding or dairy purposes before they were purchased. In a case where the animals had already been used for breeding or dairy purposes prior to the time of purchase, the animals would be considered as used property for investment credit purposes.
Incoming producing orchards and
Nematodes
(Continued From Page 12)
die to late summer and fall with annual crops. With perennial crops, such as. shrubbery, population change is less noticeable throughout the year.
To obtain a representative sample, take 20 to 25 probes with a soil tube that's used for taking fertility samples. These cores of soil should be taken to about an 8-inch depth in a zig-zag pattern over the garden or field. One sample should be taken for each 4 to 5 acres. If you have only one problem spot in the field you should sample this area separately from the rest of the field. A separate sample can then be taken of the rest of the field.
Mix the soil in a bucket and put approximately one pint of the soil in a plastic bag. Take the sample to the county Extension office. One of the
groves also qualify for investment credit. This includes apples, peaches, grapes, pecans and other income producing trees and vines. In order to be eligible for investment credit, the orchard or grove must have the required years of useful life. If the orchard or grove is already in production when it is purchased, it would be treated as used property for investment credit.
In .a case when an orchard or grove is established by the farmer, it would be treated as new property for investment credit purposes. However, the credit cannot be claimed until the year in which the orchard or grove becomes an income producer. The cost basis of the orchard or grove would be the amount of cost capitalized during planting and the development stage. This cost basis would then be used to calculate the investment credit in the year the orchard or grove becomes an income producer.
Page 7
agents will fill out a complete information sheet on each specimen and mail them to the Nematode Lab free of charge.
The cropping history and the crop to be planted must be known in order to make recommendations. This is why individuals should not mail soil samples directly to the laboratory.
After nematode counts have been made, the results and control recommendations will be sent back to your local Extension office. Control recommendations will be based on such factors as kinds of nematodes present, the population of particular nematodes, the susceptibility of the crop to be grown and the previous crop grown in the area.
The nematode diagnostic laboratory is equipped to handle soil samples from problem fields, plants, or gardens from over the state of Georgia. Although now is not the best time for sampling, soil samples sent in now will give a better indication of a potential problem than samples taken later in the spring. You'll have more time to select resistant varieties or plan soil fumigation if you send in the sample right away - and next year sample in late summer or fall.
Greenhouse Plans
Being Reprinted
Dr. Charles Rice, Ag Engineering, College Of Agriculture, University of Georgia, Athens, has contacted the MARKET BULLETIN regarding the number of requests received for his green house plans. Due to the large volume of requests received, these plans are having to be reprinted. If you have written Dr. Rice for a set of these plans and have not received them yet, please be patient. As soon as the plans are available, you will receive yours.

Vanilla is a beautiful lemoncolored orchid which is cultivated primarily for its bean pods - the source of vanilla flavoring. Although Vanilla planifolia lacks fragrance it self as does the seed pod, the fruit of the plant when dried and cured produces a delicate sweetness used to flavor baked goods, ice cream and candies.
Vanilla flavoring is one of the oldest spices used. Besides its use as a flavoring agent, it has also been applied as perfume.
The Spanish conquistadors first sampled the taste and flavor of vanilla more than four centuries ago from the Aztecs. The first record of vanilla was its use in combination with chocolate as a beverage. This team is still enjoyed today, especially when a few drops of vanilla extract are added to hot chocolate.
The vanilla orchid is a loosely climbing vine, sometimes reaching a height of 300 feet. The foliage it self is most attractive and the lemon-yellow flowers are quite abundant. They are approximately 2 inches across.
Before you decide to produce your own vanilla beans, you should know that the plant is pollinated by a single species of bee, native only to Mexico. A method of handpollination has been used but even at best it is a slow, painstaking task. Even the drying and curing process takes a minimum of six months to transform the green pod into the vanilla beans used in making ex tract.

Other nematodes that cause problems are lance, reniform, sting, lesion, stubby root and stunt nematodes. The effects of these other nematodes on the roots are not easily recognized. They may cause a coarse, stubby branched or poorly developed root system.
While certain kinds of nematodes
will effect only certain crops, a field may have several different kinds of nematodes present. This makes selection of a rotational crop very difficult. It's usually the moderate to high nematode populations present in the soil at planting time which
If the growth of plants has been poor and symptoms suggest nematodes as the cause, have a soil sample checked for nematodes. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service now has expanded facilities for processing soil samples for nematode assay. These facilities allow the handling of a larger number of samples. An accurate ap-
praisal of the nematode population in your field can be made in the laboratory if you've taken a good sample.
Nematode population levels fluctuate with the time of the year and do not occur uniformly over a field or soil area. They are highest in mid-

How many roosters are required for 70 laying hens? C. N., Cordele
In reference to your inquiry, please be advised that the average requirement is one rooster for 18 to 20 hens.
****
I have an interest in a small herd of Hereford cattle and a bull (horned type). This year we have had considerable trouble in calving. I would like to change to another bull for a smaller calf at birth and still retain the beef type. Any suggestions?
J. C., Bronwood It may be true that you are having more calving problems with a horned typed bull because the calf s head may be larger than if you had a polled bull. The size of the calf's head is usually the most important factor causing difficulty In calving. We would suggest that you keep this in mind when purchasing a new bull.
I need some information on African violets.
Mrs. J. C. Hahira
We mailed you what we have on African violets. There are several
publications also available from your local garden centers. You might
write to the African Violet Society of America, Inc., Box 1326, Knoxville,
Tennessee 37901.

I have heard of a book, YESTERDAY IN THE HILLS, that tells of early rural life in Georgia. Can you give me some information on it?
Mrs. J. C., Hahira
In 'the early years of this century, the hardy, resourceful farmers of Georgia led a simple, uncomplicated life of work, play and worship. A North Georgia father and son have nostalgically recaptured those bygone days in a new book published by the University of Georgia Press entitled "Yesterday in the Hills." Charles Hubert Watkins and his son, Floyd, describe the farmers' homes, schools and churches, their back-breaking toil, their song and play and courtship. More information on "Yesterday In The Hills" is available from the University of Georgia Press, Waddell Hall, Athens 30602.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently administered the oath of office to George Welchel of Cordele and J. R. Odom of Sylvester after they were appointed to a three year term on the Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts. Also appointed but not present for the ceremonies was Jon Daniel of Dawson.
Can you give me advice on the use of pecan leaves for mulching? C. H., Temple
Pecan leaves can be spread on the garden soil as they are removed from the tree area or they may be placed in a compost heap. If you choose to make the compost pile, we suggest that you sprinkle some actual fertilizer, such as 8-8-8 or 5-10-5, on the heap every three or four inches while composting. Pecan leaves can be used as a mulch, though pine straw is more suitable for this as it does not move around with wind movement as readily as the leaves would. The only treatment for the leaves in the heap would be the addition of some fertilizers.
