200 Years Old ---
& Still Growing
The Bicentennial, the 200th an niversary of our nation's birth, is coming. Where will it be? Every where; in every city, town and village, all across the United States. When will the Bicentennial "be held?" It has already started.
Your Georgia Commission for the National Bicentennial Cele
bration is cur rently involved in more than tw enty statewide projects and is actively encoura ging communiti es and organizai-tions all over Georgia to org anize Bicenten nial committees that will establish and achieve special goals in honor of the country's 200th birthday. About a dozen state agencies have respon ded enthusiastically to the Com mission's call for Bicentennial ac tions and have set some exciting
gn-jlt nr thajr niiin departments,
And Georgia's Bicentennial celebration doesn't end in 1976. Numerous events, both before and

after 1776, should be appropriately commemorated -- from the Boston Tea Party in 1773 to the ratification of the United States Constitution in 1789.
To be sure, there will be some who will think of this celebration as just a grand "birthday party" on July 4th, 1976, but to others the Bicen tennial has become a new cause in America with the overall goal of "improving the quality of life for every American."
Wliile this is certainly a highminded goal, we can all agree that the opportunities for working on it are wide open. To help organizations and individuals tran slate this goal into action, three un derlying themes have been developed:
HERITAGE '76 -- Projects to make us more aware of our history.
FESTIVAL USA -- Events to commemorate our 200th birthday.
HORIZONS '76 -- Programs to improve the quality of our lives.
Georgia's Bicentennial Com mission has adopted this thematic approach to the commemoration. It speaks to community groups as well as to large organizations, and it speaks to the people.
So while some may choose to ob serve the Bicentennial with only sur face decorations and temporary festivities, it can and should be a tur ning to a new national commitment which will be a true celebration of our heritage, and indeed, a time of opportunity for every American to do something extra to improve the quality of life.
Our slogan might well be. "Let it begin with me."

Go. Crops
A Look BacJc A Look Ahead
Although Georgia enjoyed a good harvest in 1973, farmers have a fer tilizer and fuel shortage looking them right in the eye as they face 1974.
Georgia's weather was good, but not great. Rain hurt a lot of crops at the beginning of the year. Later, a dry period in the late summer had a bad effect on some crops.
Despite a strong market, many far mers see trouble for corn, tobacco and cotton, crops which require large amounts of fuel and fertilizer. Some experts believe that crops such as soybeans, which require little nitrogen -- the main fertilizer element in short supply - may see an increase in acreage because of the shortage.
The market for Georgia's crops in 1973 was excellent. Prices were higher than ever before for some crops. Shortages drove the prices of many crops upward.
"Some people believe that farm overproduction, surpluses, depressed prices and low farm income are ^hings of the past," says Robert Glover, Cooperative Extension Ser vice marketing specialist!
"These people suggest that prices will remain relatively high and shor tages of farm commodities will reoc cur from time to time. But this may not be the case.
"The current high farm prices could have resulted primarily from the recent rapid expansion of foreign
markets. This means that continued high demand and prices for farm products depend on foreign demand staying strong.
"This also means that farmers are somewhat dependent on policy decisions that will be made by Russia, the Republic of China and other nations," says Glover.
Agronomists with the Cooperative Extension Service in tobacco, soybeans, cotton, peanuts and corn have been working with the state's farmers trying to help them over come some of their production problems.
Leaf Farmers Urged To Write
Butz, Contact Congressmen
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy In/in has lambasted Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz' proposal to increase or terminate the national marketing quota and acreage allotment for flue cured tobacco in 1974 and urged all Georgia tobacco farmers to make their feelings known to the U.S.D.A. and to

We are planning to fatten a beef for our freezer. Will the meat taste strong if we leave the cow in the pasture and supplement its diet with grain, or should we take it off the pasture completely?
Mrs. A. F., Atlanta
Our State Veterinarian advises that the beef would be of much better quality if it is put up and fed only dry feed for a period of about 90 days. When left on pasture and supplemented with other feeds, the beef does not obtain the quality it does when it has been confined to dry lot feeding.

Plea'se advise me on the name of this bean and if it is edible. The bean grows in a pod about one foot long on a running type plant.
B. P., Forest Park
Dr. James Lang, Assistant Director of Seed Division, has identified the bean as the Jack Bean, (Canavalia ensiformis DC). It is commonly grown to feed livestock. The texture and taste of this bean render it less palatable than the commonly cultivated garden varieties. The beans have also been used as a coffee substitute.
considering such a proposal came in the December 26 issue of the Federal Register, with only until January 10 allowed for testimony and letters on
the issue.
"Since 1938," Irvin said, "tobacco has been grown under an allotment system voted on by tobacco farmers. To consider abolishment of this program after 35 years and at a time when farmers are already faced with economic hardships of fertilizer and fuel shortages, increasing production costs and labor scarcity is tan tamount to an attempt to scare or force our tobacco farmers out of business."
Earlier this year in a referendum farmers voted in favor of a three years marketing quota by a 98.5 per cent majority.
"Now," Irvin said, "due to a 10 or 12 percent increase and anticipated increase in export demands, Butz is suggesting throwing out the entire system with total disregard to the farmer vote and to the economic im pact.
"To increase quotas on the basis of increased exports is one thing/' Irvin said, "but to suggest abolishment of the program is a panic tactic that could wreck land values and the economic stability of the entire tobacco producing areas."
Referendums Held
On ACC Programs
Eight of Georgia's nine Agricultural Commodity Com missions have set dates for referendums on the continuation of their marketing programs. Law requires a 30 day period be set every three years for a referendum to give producers an opportunity to con tinue or stop their ACC program.
The dates are as follows: Milk -- January 8-February 6. Eggs & Sweet Potatoes -- January
15-February 13. Peanuts, Apples and Peaches -- Jan
uary 22-February 20. Cotton -- January 29-February 27. Tobacco -- February 18-March 19.
Ballots will be mailed to each ef fected producer by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Bona fide producers who do not receive a ballot may request a ballot from the Department or his local county agent. ____
Duroc Congress
Southeastern Duroc Congress will be held in Quincy, Fla., Jan. 6-8. En tries include 247 open gilts, bred gilts and boars and 30 to 40 barrows. Entries will begin arriving January 4.
The unusual name bittersweet was derived by the experiences of early naturalists who claimed the roots of the plant tasted bitter when first chewed, but then sweet. The berries if eaten in quantity are poisonous to cattle and children.
This slender woody vine is a native of Europe but is now common from New England to Florida and west to Nebraska. Although it has lovely violet flowers the orange-red berries are much more familiar and are easily found this time of year.
