Blueberry Assoc. Started A s Dream

The Georgia Blueberry

Association, which has its headquar-

ters in Alma, was initiated by the

Economic Development Task Force

of the Alma-Bacon County Model

Cities program. The association is

striving to introduce a new

agricultural industry and economic

booster to Southeast Georgia.

In its efforts to do this, the

association has received contin-

uing techni-

cal

assista-

nce from the

staffs of the

Coastal Plains

Experiment St-

ation and the

Rural Develop-

ment Center in

Tifton.

The associa-

tion is presently funded by a

$47,000 grant from the Coastal

Plains Regional Commission,

(Our guest columnist this week is John Foreman, President, Georgia Blueherry Association, Alma-Bacon County Model Cities Commission, P. O. Box 148, Alma 31510.)

$15,000 from Model Cities Supplemental funds, and the Association itself provides $12,000.
Over 100 acres of blueberries are now growing in permanent fields in a seven-county area of Southeast Georgia.
The association owns and operates a blueberry nursery which has 24 rooting beds capable of producing 120,000 plants per year. There are presently 65,000 plants in nursery rows, and it is anticipated that some 390 acres will be in permanent fields at the conclusion of the 1974 planting season.
"The most worthwhile ac-
complishments of the world start with dreams," Dr. S. E. Younts, vicepresident for services at the University of Georgia, told members of the Georgia Blueberry Association at their third annual meeting. "I and the members of the Georgia Blueberry Association believe in dreams."
Dr. Younts said, "The Georgia Blueberry Association began as a dream by people dedicated to the ideals of good people who are willing to work to make life better,
not only for themselves, but for others as well . . . Blueberries are now a part of the people of Bacon County and Southeast Georgia, and your goal of 2,000 acres in production by 1980 is reasonable.
We believe we can and will reach this goal.

Fresh Vegetables

Increased In '72
Production of the principal commercial vegetables for fresh market and processing in Georgia during 1972 was valued at $10,736,000, an increase of 2 percent above the revised 1971 value.

Acreage Reports State Salutes FFA; Building Tomorrow Promise Increase
The acreage seeded in Georgia this

year will be larger than 1972 for

corn, soybeans, and oats if the early plans of the State's farmers materialize. Results from the January 1 special intentions-to-plant survey conducted by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service also shows less acreage will be devoted to cotton, wheat and barley production.
Acreages actually planted this year may be more or less than indicated because of weather, economic -conditions, seed supply, labor supply, and farm programs.

This is National Future Farmers of America Week and more than 20,000 Georgia FFA members join with over 43,000 FFA'ers in the nation in celebrating this occasion. "FFA Unites Youth with Opportunities" is the theme of FFA Week, which began February 17.

When you get ready to set your plants, soak the roots in water just before planting as this will help them to get off to a good start. It is important to set the plants in the ground deep enough so the roots are entirely covered with soil. However, do not cover the crown up as that would cause the plants to die. The soil level should be right at the bottom of the crown. Press the soil around each plant so the soil is firm to the roots. Keep the plants from getting dry by watering them frequently (if rainfall is not
adequate) especially during the first six weeks while the plants are getting established.

I Straight Line

Can peonies be grown successfully here in Georgia? What are the

requirements? Do they like a sweet soil?

Mrs. J. L., Waynesboro

Peonies do grow well here. They require plenty of sun and love sweet

soil. We suggest that you use bone meal and manure. Please be careful not

to plant too deep - only one to two inches deep at the most is recom-

mended.

When is the best time to transplant camellia bushes? Mrs. W. H., Richmond Hill

Please advise me how to get rid of kudzu vine. C. K., Macon
Our Plant and Entomology Division advises that you spray kudzu vine with 2,4-D (brush killer) in May and again in June for control.

We Get Letters

Dear Editor: . I would like to reply to the question of Mr. Bob Sanders of Roberta, Georgia, who asked about the uses of wild cucum ber bark, ratsbane and rattleroot so often advertised in your paper.
Wild cucumber bark can come from three trees of the Magnolia family -- the Cucumber Tree -- Magnolia acuminata; the Large (big) leaf Magnolia tree -- M. macrophylla and the Umbrella Tree-- M. tripetala. The bark of these trees is a gentle stimulant, aromatic, tonic, diaphoretic (to increase perspiration), stomachic. A warm infusion is a laxative and will induce perspiration; a cold in fusion is an anti-periodic (used to prevent the periodic return of a disease), and a tonic. This bark is used in cases of rheumatism and malaria.
Ratsbane is also called Spotted Wintergreen or Pipsissewa -- Chimaphila maculata. This should not be con fused with the Pipsissewa -- C. umbellata of more northern regions. It is said the species -- C. umbellata is the more medicinal of the two plants. The leaves are used as a diurectic and have an antiseptic influence on the urinary tract; therefore, are useful in cases of cystitis. Ratsbane is also used as a tonic, astringent, alterative (used to alter the course of a disease), for coughs and heart trouble. A poisonous plant -- Nux Vomica -- Strychnos nux vomica -- is also called Ratsbane.
Rattleroot -- Cimicifuga racemosa -- is used as an astringent, alterative, expectorant and~is used in tuber culosis -- helping the cough, reducing the pulse, inducing perspiration. It is also helpful in cases of whooping cough. This plant is said to be an antidote against poison and the bite of poisonous snakes. This gives rise to one of the com mon names -- Black Snakeroot. The root is the medicinal part. The leaves are used to drive away bugs, and therefore, we have another common name -- Bugbane. The generic name -- Cimicifuga comes from two Latin words -- Cimex (bug); fugo (to drive away, to drive away bugs.)
I am not recommending these plants as a treatment for the above mentioned diseases -- merely reporting some of the uses of these plants.

Honey is the oldest sweetener known to man and was the only one until sugar cane was discovered and cultivated on a large scale in the New World. Honey was. one of the basics for survival, not only for food but also for medicinal purposes.
Until the 18th century, every rural farmer maintained his bees as part of his farming operation. They were as important to him as his milk cow or chickens. Honey was considered to be a measure of a man's wealth and a jar of honey on a kitchen table signified prosperity in the home. Honey was often used as bartar for payment of rent and other necessities.
Many old home remedies used honey as their base. Besides using the sticky liquid, the wax combs were also valuable. Strips of clean linen were dipped into the melted wax for use as bandages. The wax was used to preserve leather, smooth sewing yarn and make a primitive chewing gum.
Honey itself is a sweet liquid made by honeybees from the nectar of flowers and plants. The bees suck the nectar from the blossoms and carry it to their hives for storage. It is transported in a special honey pouch in the bee's body. While the nectar remains in this pouch, inversion breaks the substance into two simple sugars, levulose and dextrose.
Although honey today is not used as extensively as it once was as a sweetener, it is still preferred by many for its taste as a natural sugar. Honey is almost pure carbohydrate. It is a predigested sweetener and therefore recommended in certain diets.
Honey can easily be substituted for sugar in any recipe by reducing the liquid 1/4 cup. 1 cup honey is equivalent to 1 cup sugar in sweetness.
While not every rural farmer has his bee colony, Georgia produced more than six million pounds of honey in 1972. This should prove to anyone 'that honey is still an important natural product.

Farm Population
Slowly Dwindling
The number of people living on farms has been dwindling steadily for several years. For that matter, so has the number of farms.
In fact, the United States currently is losing farms at the rate of 1 23 a day. Only 2.83 million farms are now in operation in the country.
This is down nearly a million from the 3.7 million farms just ten years ago.
PRUNE PECANS? After nuts have been harvested it's a good idea to clean up pecan groves including pruning when necessary. On old trees, says Extension Horticulturist Ray Livingston, it helps to prune off the lower limbs about every three years. This enables tractors and other equipment to pass under the trees for proper grove management. Remove limbs flush with a lateral limb or flush with the trunk. And if limbs more than two inches in diameter are pruned, the cut area should be treated with a pruning compound.

necessary will depend on the size of the patch and the length of the dry period. Irrigation will lengthen the production period and increase yields substantially.
SELECTING VARIETIES
Varieties well adapted to South Georgia are Dixieland, Pocahontas, Florida Ninety, and Missionary. In some years the yield from Florida Ninety may be small unless a good spray or dust program is followed.
Dixieland, Pocahontas, Surecrop, and Florida Ninety do well also in North and Middle Georgia. Other varieties recommended for these two areas are Blakemore, Albritton, and Tennessee Beauty. For the northern one-fourth of the state, Empire and Catskill are recommended.
Everbearing Varieties Do not
attempt to produce everbearing strawberries, as you will be disappointed. These berries are adapted only to areas of higher elevations and cooler climates.
PLANTING
Set plants in the southern part of the state during October and November and during March in Middle and North Georgia. Freezing weather during the winter months in the mountain area of North Georgia may cause young plants to heave out of the ground. The single row of the narrow matted row system of planting seems to be most desirable.
Set plants 12 to 18 inches apart in four foot rows and allow them to form runner plants. In the matted row, a stand of four to six plants per square foot is adequate for good yields. Beds are generally allowed to form from 18 to 24 inches wide, leaving walkways to be used for picking fruit.
FERTILIZATION
In general, on soils to which no manure has been added, 600 to 800 pounds per acre of a 5-10-15 com-

In their classes of vocational
agriculture the FFA members study the practical scientific principals of agriculture. Each member is required to conduct a supervised practice program under the direction of his teacher of vocational agriculture, thus receiving practical experience to supplement his study.
As a result of their project programs last year, Georgia FFA members had a total combined labor income of over four million dollars.
More Bee Colonies
Bring Production Up
Georgia beekeepers responded to a more favorable honey price by increasing the number of colonies of bees in the state in 1972 to 164,000, one percent over the 162,000 in 1971, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service.
Yield per colony increased from 35 pounds in 1971 to 37 in 1972
even though some producers, particularly those that market package bees, limited the amount they harvested to insure sufficient winter stores.
Honey producers received an average price of 28.4 cents per pound in 1972 compared to 20.6 cents per pound in 1971. Value of production in 1972 is estimated to be $1,723,000, almost 48 percent above the 1971 value of $1,168,000.
LOT OF GRASS
Improved permanent pastures occupy more land 2 1/2 million acres than any crop grown in Georgia. In addition, there are over one million acres of temporary winter pasture in the state. Of course, it takes a lot of forage to feed all our cows.

mercial fertilizer should be broadcast before setting plants. An application of 300 pounds per acre of this fertilizer, applied June 1 as a sidedressing, helps in runner plant formation. Repeat a 600-pound application again in October to aid in the development of buds for the next year. Fruit bud formation takes place in the short days of the late fall and early spring months.
Use only two applications of fertilizer on plantings after the first year. Applications should be 600 pounds per acre after harvest and again during early fall. This is at the rate of approximately 1 1/2 pounds

per 25 feet of row. Broadcast the fertilizer over the entire bed when the foliage is dry. Remove the fertilizer from the leaves immediately with a broom or some other suitable object.
MULCHING Using sawdust as a mulch around strawberry plants and in the middles will help to keep weeds under control and eliminate cultivation. Sawdust not only holds moisture, but helps to prevent soil temperatures from injuring the roots of the plant. Pine straw and other mulch materials are good also.
See Page 5 for a delicious strawberry recipe.

FRUIT TIP
Don't buy fresh fruit just because the price is low, advise marketing specialists with USDA's Consumer and Marketing Service. Unless the lower price is a result of overabundance at the time, the so-called bargain may be undesirable. And buy only what you need.
