An Ever Present
Need For Research
The Georgia General Assembly, in the weeks to come, will be required to supply funds for certain types of research. Some of these funds will be allocated through the University System, some through the Community Development Department and others through the Department of Agriculture, Department of Transportation, etc. Regardless, it will be a tremendous and thankless task even if the wisdom of Solomon is applied in making these decisions.
It is often easy for us to become complacent in our attitude
'toward the ne[ed for additional research, when we see evidence of tremendous efficiency and sopjhistication in | industry. AgriIculture is just such an industry. All of us are aware of the tremendous advances that
(Our guest columnist this week is Hulan L. Hall, President of the Georgia Agribusiness Council. Mr. Hall is associated with Van tress Farms, Inc. For information on agribusiness address inquiries to Georgia Agribusiness Council, 19 Hunter Street, S.W., Atlanta 30334.)
have taken place in agriculture over the past 20 years. Let us not assume that we can maintain these efficiencies without continued research and development.
It is often asked, and righly so, why can't industry provide these funds? This question can best be answered in this way. Industry commits many hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to research and development. The State of Georgia has benefited directly and indirectly from this research as have the companies conducting the studies. However, there are critical problems that arise from time to time where it is necessary for the state to act to protect its citizens and its industry.
It is necessary for the General Assembly to anticipate research needs and have funds available as needed. It is also necessary that facilities be made available to meet contingencies. We must prepare facilities that will allow both the State's University System and industry to engage in expanded cooperative research projects.
All research is not technical research. Georgia in particular needs to do much more market research for many of its raw agricultural products. Market research will enable Georgia to develop new industries and expand existing ones while she builds a more balanced economy.
Working together Georgia and Georgia's industries will be able to continue growing and assure us all of a brighter future through research.

Georgia Annual Crop Report 1972
The value of Georgia's major crops, amounted to $660.6 million in 1972, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. This was a record high value for Georgia's crops, surpassing the previous record set during 1971, by $21.4 million or 3.3 percent. Peanuts continued to be the highest value crop for the state by a wide margin accounting for 30 percent of the total value. Corn ranked second, contributing 21 percent of the total value. Tobacco increased $8.5 million in value and retained its third place rating of values. The cotton crop was worth $7.1 million less due to a drop in yield, but still ranked fourth in value. Dry weather hurt the soybean crop and dropped its value by $8.1 million. Soybeans had the largest value decline despite a 12 percent increase in acres harvested and sharply higher prices. All small grains recorded a value decline, as did sorghums.

At what depth should sawdust be applied to ponds which leak through the bottom?
J. J., Harlem A pond can leak or lose water for different reasons. The most important factor in solving this problem is to determine the cause. The leak could be due to a construction problem or possibly a geology problem involving the soil structure. We suggest you contact Mr. Walton E. Greene, Soil Conservation Service, P. O. Box 69, Thomson, Georgia 30824, phone (404) 595-4241. We would not recommend using sawdust at this time in attempting to stop the leak. Normally sawdust provides little help in a pr*obl*em* of* this nature.

Equine Infectious Anemia, a deadly and highly contagious disease effecting horses, has been diagnosed in several areas of the state.
The Coggins Test, which has been declared the official test, by the United States Department of Agriculture, is used to diagnose EIA. This test is apparently quite accurate, although occasionally an inconclusive result will be made. In these cases, another sample should be submitted for retesting.
If positive horses are discloved in herds, there are three choices the owners may make involving the positive animal: Number 1 destroy the horse, Number 2 completely isolate from all other horses, Number 3 house positive horse in insect proof stable.
The department of Agriculture plans to follow a prospectus developed for handling EIA reactors in that a representative of the department will contact herd owners who have positive animals and quarantine only the animals that are positive to the test for EIA.
At some future date, it is intended that these positive animals be permanently identified by some method of identification as once an animal becomes infected, it remains a carrier throughout it's life span. By means of mosquitoes, or possibly other insects, the carrier horse can be a means of spreading this disease to other closely associated horses.
Any instrument that might come in contact with blood, such as hypodermic needles, scissors or shears, curry combs, bridles, bits, harness, dental instruments, hoof instruments, etc., should be thoroughly sterilized by boiling for fifteen minutes prior to being used from one horse to

I raise broilers and use the chicken litter on my pasture. I've been told if I put this litter on the pasture in early spring, it will kill the cattle. Can you tell me when is the best time to put the litter on the pasture and what effect the grass will have on the cattle?

Mr. and Mrs. Brock Baxter, Cordon county, have received an award for the highest yield in a High Yield Soybean Contest. The award consisted of an expense paid trip to Denmark, Norway, Hungary, and France and was presented by David Carlson, Elanco representative. Mr. Baxter, who farms jointly with his father, J. D. Baxter, produced 63.38 bushels per acre on a random sample plot from his total acreage of soybeans.

Dear Editor Thanks for sending the MARKET BULLETIN. My husband
and I have moved out of the City of Tallapoosa and we enjoy being here with nature and the privilege of enjoying fresh air and quietness. We are only three miles out from Buchanan and the week before Christmas we saw four deer in front of our home also the quail and cardinal and even a bluebird occasionally. And at night we enjoy seeing once again God's Heaven the moon and stars.
Thanks again. May all of you have good health and happiness in this New Year.

BLANCHED TURNIPS

8 small turnips

Salt water

Chicken broth, or canned 3 egg yolks

consomme to cover

1/2 teaspoon sugar

1/4 stick butter

Salt, pepper (white pepper)

Dash cayenne

1 tbls. minced onion

Peel turnips and blanch by parboiling in salt water for about

10 minutes. Rinse and return to a saucepan with enough rich,

seasoned chicken broth or consomme to cover; add sugar

and cook until turnips are tender. When tender stir in butter.

Just before serving, beat the egg yolks and blend until

smooth with 3 tablespoons of the chicken stock. Gradually

pour the egg mixture into turnips, adding a little at a time and

stirring with wooden spoon to prevent curdling. Season with

salt, pepper, cayenne, and minced onion. Bring to a boil. Ser-

ves four.

STUFFED ONIONS

Cover the onions with lightly salted boiling water and cook 10 minutes. Drain and dip in cold water. Drain and scoop out the centers to make cups 1/2 inch thick. Chop the centers and mix with cooked sausage meat or with any wellseasoned cooked meat or chicken, chopped mushrooms and soft bread crumbs. Moisten with cream or melted butter and season to taste. Stuff the onions and sprinkle with buttered crumbs. Put in a baking dish with a small amount of water or stock. Bake at 375 degrees until tender (30 to 45 minutes).

Georgians Drink
More Milk In 72
Georgians apparently are drinking more milk, and that's good news to the state's dairy industry.
During the first nine months of 1972, fluid milk sales were up better than six percent over the same period of 1971.
Flavored milk and drink was up over 65 percent. Skim milk registered a 12 percent increase, and the two percent product (low-fat) jumped 90 percent.

(Celtis laevigata Willd.)
Sugarberry gets its common name from the sweet, thin-skinned fruits which attract squirrels and birds like a steak attracts a hungry man. The pea-sized, orange-red drupes are a confectionery treat much sought after by tree-dwelling wildlife and it's a sure bet that if you have a sugarberry tree, your yard is full of birds and squirrels when the berries are ripe.
Sugarberry, also known as Southern Hackberry or Mississippi Hackberry, likes a humid climate and therefore thrives throughout most of Georgia except in the nor theastern corner of the state. Tem peratures are usually too severe in this area for the tree to be common.
The tree is easily damaged by light fires. The wood is neither strong nor hard. It is, however, used in the construction of boxes, baskets and cheap furniture.
The medium size tree averages a height of about 60 to 80 feet.

chicken litter to your pasture could cause a buildup of excessive amounts of nitrogen and this could cause nitrate poisoning, or grass tetany, in the cattle. Adding lime to your pasture would help prevent this condition. We suggest that you contact your local county agent about getting a soil test run to determine if lime is needed. You should supply these cattle with a complete mineral mixture free choice, and this will help prevent problems on your pasture.

I would like to acquire any and all information available on setting up and operating a beef ranch.
C. M., Doraville
In order that your questions be answered intelligently, it will be necessary that your farm be visited and a crop rotation play be established according to the type of land and other important features, including availability of water. This can best be ac complished by three people, all of whom are located or have offices within your county. May we suggest that you contact each of the following: (1) your county agricultural agent, located in the county in which your farm is located, (2) the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, also located in the farm county, and (3) the Soil Con servation Service, which has a similar location. If you can get the help of these three people, we are sure that they will be able to give you assistance. However, we mailed the information we have available.
