IT CAME UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR

V
// came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old. From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to men, From heaven's all-gracious King: The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing.

Still thro' the cloven skies they come. With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats O'er all the weary world: Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hovering wing, And ever o'er its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing.

For lo, the days are hastening on, By prophet bards foretold. When with the ever circling years Comes round the age of gold; When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world give back the song Which now the angels sing.
And ye, beneath life's crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow, Look now! for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing: O rest beside the weary road. And hear the angels sing.
Richard S. Willis

GEORGIA CROPS
Georgia has a diversified agriculture which includes practically every crop grown in the United States except rice and citrus. The dollar value of these crops reached almost 700 million in 1972.
FERTILIZER SHORTAGE
Fall and winter application of phosphate and potash for spring-planted crops will help ease the fertilizer shortage, according to P. J. Bergeaux, agronomist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. However, he advises not to use this practice on deep sandy soils.

MYRRH

FRANKINCENSE

"And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshipped Him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh."
Matthew 2:11 The treasures brought by the wise men were gifts of great value: gold, a token of kingship, frankincense for holiness, and myrrh, symbolic of the suffering the Christ Child would endure in His life on earth. The Frankincense tree (Boswellia thurifera) is native to the southern Arabian peninsula and the northeastern coast of Africa. It is a beautiful tree with a pink starshaped flower and bright green leaves similar to the mountain ash. The wood is very hard and sturdy and is used for many purposes. About the end of February or the first of March, the bark is cut and a thin layer peeled off; about a month later the process is repeated and the white resin flows. When hard, it becomes brittle, glittery and has a bitter flavor. It is acclaimed to be the finest burning resin or incense in the world. The name frankincense is derived from "freelighting". For centuries, the frankincense was a principal item for trade among Mediterranean countries. Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is the resin product of a small tree, also native to the southern Arabian peninsula and in Bible days the coast of the Red Sea. The myrrh bush has a large trunk with knotty branches. Along the thin bark, small leaves grow in clusters. When the bark is cut a yellowish, oily liquid flows but solidifies into brownish granules with a balsamic odor and bitter aromatic taste. Myrrh has been used as a spice and medicine for centuries and was used as a salve in the purification of the dead. The holy anointing oil was used in Tabernacle ceremonies and was considered most precious in preparing the body for religious rites. Myrrh has also been used to identify a fragrant wild herb, commonly called sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata). This plant is not, however, the myrrh brought by the wise men, according to Biblical authorities.

Your Favorite Christmas Symbol Indoor Gardeners

Probably Had Fascinating Origin

Ready For Winter
Indoor gardeners who leave their

Stockings hung by the fireplace ... boughs of holly ... a jolly little man in a red

suit ... no matter what your favorite Christmas symbol, you can be sure that it

had a fascinating beginning.

The symbolic use of the tree, for example, dates back at least 4,000

became its symbol. The Christmas tree originated in

years, to a time when the Egyptians the days of Saint Wilfrid in the 7th

celebrated in honor of their sun god Century. On one occasion, as he

house plants to fend for themselves this winter may have a surprise in store next spring.
To maintain healthy growth, indoor plants like outdoor ones
need special winter care, says
Doug Crater, horticulturist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
For example pl-
ants brought indoors for winter should be carefully che-

most popular Christmas gifts to give and receive, few people know how to tell a good one from a bad one in the store.
And even fewer people know how to care for a poinsettia.
Most people believe that the red leaves make up the flower part of
the plant. Actually, the flower is in the middle of the leaves, and the red leaves are called bracts.
When buying a poinsettia:
Make sure the plant is at least one and one-half times as tall as the pot. Pick a plant with large bracts, but not one that pulls the stem over. The bracts should be at least one and one-half times larger than the base of the pot. The best looking plants have a symmetrical bract growth pattern. Multi-stem plants should have at least three stems. Get the deepest colored plant you can. The older the plant, the more likely the colors are to fade. The deep color also shows that the plant has had good care. Keep the plant around 70 degrees during the day and no lower than 60 degrees at night.
Unexpected Gift
Brings Real Joy
The buying and giving of Christmas gifts should be most enjoyable.

"This little tree," said Wilfrid, "is
a young child of the forest. It shall be your holy tree tonight. It is the sign of an endless life, for its leaves are evergreen. See how it points toward heaven. Let this be called the tree of the Christ Child."
Santa Claus. Did you know that jolly St. Nick actually existed? It's a fact! The historical St. Nicholas was a popular saint who lived in the fourth century -- and who in his lifetime was Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor. He was reputed to be very rich and it is said that he loved to make mysterious journeys bearing secret gifts to the unfortunate.
Legend has it that St. Nicholas knew an old nobleman who was very poor but did not want anyone to know of his dire need. Wishing to give him a gift of money, the Bishop crept to a window of the house and, seeing the old gentleman asleep by the fire, climbed to the roof and dropped the money down the chimney. However, it so happened that the nobleman's daughter had hung some stockings to dry by the fire, the money fell into one of them, and the custom of hanging Christmas stockings by the fireplace had its beginning.
Mistletoe is another symbol of Christmas from the annals of legend. The ancient Druids thought it was sacred and hung sprigs of the plant over their doorways for luck. To the Romans, however, mistletoe was an indication of peace and goodwill. From myth and custom over the years, mistletoe became a symbol of love, and inevitably, the custom evolved of kissing under the mistletoe.

cked for insects and diseases.
Treat mildly diseased plants by breaking off infected limbs and leaves, but discard severely infected
plants. When moving plants into light
any window will work, but southern
or eastern exposures give more light for keeping plants in active growth.
If plants are placed on window sills, Crater says, "For goodness sakes don't let them touch the window panes. That's the coldest part of the house and the plants will freeze."
Because closed curtains keep warm air away from plants. Crater also cautions against pulling draperies when plants are sitting on sills. "Either leave an open space so the warm air can circulate or remove the plants from the sill when the draperies are drawn."
Never put plants near a heat vent or in a drafty location. This tends to dry the leaves and causes them to fall off.
During late fall and winter, because of reduced sunlight, plants usually require smaller amounts of
water. The best way to know when to
water is to test the soil moisture by pushing your index finger into the pot until the soil almost reaches the second joint. If the soil is moist at that level, don't water. Repeat this test every day or so until the soil is dry, then water, saturating the soil until water runs through the bottom
of the poi. Plants should also receive less fer-
tilizer during winter. Follow your regular schedule, but cut the amount of fertilizer in half.
