Peanuts First
In Cash Value
On July 30, 1973, the Crop Reporting Service announced that peanuts had attained the position of Georgia's No. 1 commodity in cash value for 1972. Of the state's total agricultural income last year, 15.2 percent (or $228,509,000) came from peanuts.
Economists tell us that to calculate the approximate economic
is! impact of this income, you multiply the tot-

lars which ->- by j| any yardstick 1 boils down to
more than "just peanuts." Last year's record crop of 2,620 pounds per acre when compared to the production of 1915, of 510 pounds, is some indication of just

From 1961 on, yields increased dramatically almost every year with last year's yield being the highest on record.
In view of this upward swing in production, what lies ahead? Have we reached the summit as far as yields are concerned? The answer is probably no, although there are a lot of variables to take into consideration. A good, strong price support program has been a key factor in the grower maintaining unaltered interest in the crop. And the input into scientific research has been such that many of the unknowns about peanut production have been unraveled.
Interest is high in peanut production and for the first time in many years the problem of surpluses shows promise of letting up, thanks to increased domestic use here at home and abroad. The world-wide shortage of protein crops is certainly going to have impact on peanut production.
The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts was formed in 1961 and this was the first time that growers voluntarily agreed to kick in funds to promote their crop in the areas of promotion, research and education. These funds have been a profitable venture for the peanut grower as evidenced by the increased demand for edible peanut products.
During the time the Commission has been functioning, over $1 1/2

Pesticide Use
In Home Garden
May Be Stopped
Home gardening or the production of vegetables or flowers on a small scale could be virtually eliminated in this country if proposed federal regulations on pesticide use are adopted, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
Irvin said the proposed regulations would restrict the use of many pesticides to commercial pesticide applicators or farmers producing more than $1,000 worth of agricultural products a year.
"We are all concerned with the safe and proper use of pesticides to protect human health as well as our environment," Irvin said, "but to regulate pesticides so strictly as to make it impossible for home gardeners and flower lovers to enjoy such activity shows a lack of common sense.
In letters to the Environmental Protection Agency, Commissioners of Agriculture in other states and members of Georgia's congressional delegation, Irvin requested the home gardener, flower hobbyists and small truck farmers not be denied use of pesticides necessary for such activity.
"You can't place a monetary value on the pride and personal satisfaction the home gardener and flower hobbyist enjoys," Irvin insisted. "The safe use of most pesticides can best be insured through adequate labeling as to directions for use and educational programs designed to insure products are used properly," he said.
4-H Scholarships
Thanks to friends of 4-H, young people in Georgia and across the nation can pursue college careers in agriculture and agribusiness.
Georgia 4-H members interested in applying for 1974 scholarships can obtain applications through their county Extension agents. All applications are due in the state 4-H office no later than March 15, 1974.
Commissioner Sees Food Supply
Hurt Due To Fertilizer Shortage
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has appealed to state and federal energy authorities to improve the priority position of natural gas to head off an impending farm fertilizer shortage in Georgia.
Dairy Short Courses
The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service will conduct dairy short courses this month on preventing calf deaths.
Dates and locations are: Dec. 1 2 Rock Eagle 4-H Center, Eaton-
ton; Dec. 13 Rural Development Center, Tifton; Dec. 14 Agricultural Center, Millen.
New Equipment
For Scale Tests The Georgia Department of Agriculture has stepped up its weights and measures services offering consumers and farmers of Georgia strengthened protection through the addition of two new scale testing units.
Heavy scale testing units are now in additional areas of the state on a regular rather than occasional basis, one serving southwest Georgia and the other serving the mountain counties of north Georgia.
In the past only three such units have been available to the state for testing heavy scales.
Commissioner Irvin says these new units will offer further protection to the seller and buyer of forest and agricultural products, heretofore impossible with the equipment available.
The heavy scale testing units will test livestock scales, poultry scales, motor vehicle scales, and handle requests for heavy scale testing at all federal installations.
In a letter to members of the Georgia Public Service Commission and the Federal Power Commission, Irvin pointed out that in the fertilizer manufacturing process, nitrogen is taken from the atmosphere and combined with hydrogen, produced from natural gas, to form ammonia which is a basic fertilizer ingredient.
He cited a U. S. Department of Agriculture prediction that the coming year would see a one million ton deficit of nitrogen material which is absolutely necessary for food production on the farm.
Although a prime component in the production of nitrogen, natural gas is listed sixth on the list of fuel priorities and has already affected nitrogen production in Georgia as well as other parts of the country.
Irvin said there is evidence that fertilizer plants have had their natural gas supplies curtailed while lower priority users had sufficient gas to operate using natural gas as a general fuel and he said he did not think this was in the best public in-

Taxes On Sale Of Timber
Reduced By Good Management
The year 1973 saw record prices for many farm commodities. Stumpage, or standing timber, prices were included; and many landowners sold timber to meet the heavy demand for building materials and pulp and paper products.
Pictured above are new officers of the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association. Seated Left to Right: Joe Cerniglia, Jr., President, Charles Tatum, 1st Vice President, Derrelle Pridgen, Treasurer and Charles Rose, Board Chairman. Standing are: board members Tommy Knight, Jim Davis, Bill Webb, Gene Sutherland and Sam Cefaul. Not pictured are Bud Williams, 2nd Vice President and board member.
Income from the sale of timber during the year will account for. a large portion of gross receipts for many landowners. Naturally, this will have an effect on the tax bill due federal and state governments.
.Taxes on the sale of timber can be reduced in many cases by good management. Basic to good management is an understanding of the income tax laws dealing with the growth, harvesting, and marketing of timber crops. Unfortunately, many landowners are not aware that tax laws include certain provisions that are beneficial to timber owners.
In this series of articles, some of these provisions will be discussed. Tax treatment of timber transactions is a complex subject, however; and landowners are encouraged to seek additional information from qualified tax consultants.

Dear Editors:
It is time to remind your readers that the easy way to hull walnuts is with an old fashioned corn shelter.
Also, the croaker sack term began because of the type material the sack is made of to start with which was crocus cloth or a burlap type of cloth.

(Helleborus Niger) A native of southern Europe and Asia, the Christmas Rose is a hardy, erect evergreen perennial which flowers between November and March. Because of its pure white flowers and proximity of blooming to Christmas, many legends have evolved surrounding the plant. Legend has it that poverty stricken peasants were driven from their homes into the forest. Being far away from home and quite poor, they could make no Christmas preparations for their children. However, when Christmas Eve approached, the forest fell silent and a whitish flow came over the woods. The next morning the earth was found to be covered with Christmas Roses. Others tell of the "Gift of Madelon" who wept because she had no present for the Christ child. She cried to the angels that everyone had a gift but she could not even take the child a flower because it was winter. The angel waved a wand of Lilies and transformed the pathway to Bethlehem into glistening white Christmas Roses. Upon presenting the bouquet of roses to the Christ child, Jesus touched the white flowers and they became tinged with pink. Such a beautiful flower in the deep of winter will stir the emotions of any soul, especially when you find a large clump of dark green leaves two feet and more across with wide waxen flowers at their base. The Christmas Rose is a hardy plant and does well in borders and in a slightly shady location. They do well in a clay soil which is moist but does not hold water for long periods of time. Enrich the soil with leaf mold and decayed manure when you set the plants out in the spring. Clumps should be divided in March and set out so they can sink their roots into cool soil before hot weather arrives. Valera Jessee
Peanuts First
(Continued From Page 1) million dollars has been spent on peanut-related research which has helped the grower produce not only larger crops of peanuts, but peanuts of the highest quality ever known before.
Georgia is the largest producer of peanuts in the nation with an allotment of over 515,000 acres. Peanuts are grown on 26,000 farms in 84 South Georgia counties. From this acreage, which is approximately 34 percent of the total allotted acreage in the U. S., we grow 43 percent of the nation's supply of peanuts.

terest. In his letter, Irvin pointed out that
due to a lack of natural gas one Georgia fertilizer plant was closed down an aggregate of 80 days during the 1972-73 season, resulting in a production loss of 15,000 tons of ammonia or an equivalent loss of 246,620 tons of 5-10-15 fertilizer.
"Unless the situation is improved," Irvin stated, "our food prices will be affected and a food shortage is evident. A survey conducted by the Fertilizer Institute shows the nation's present inventory (of nitrogen) to be one-third of the supply on hand in 1972."
Buying Service
Needs Checking
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has been contacted by several county agents concerning farmers in their counties being approached about joining a buying service. This would allow them to buy certain items at reduced rates. Although many buying services are legitimate, farmers are warned to use extreme caution in subscribing to a service of this type especially if there is any fee involved.
If you have been contacted recently by a service of this type, please report it to your county agent or to the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Taxes
(Continued From Page 1)
provisions affecting timber owners are depletion allowances and capital gain benefits. Depletion
allowances let you recover capital invested in timber and in certain timber management practices. A little time and effort spent in determining the depletion allowance can often save you money.
Since timber is a long-term crop, it is clearly a capital asset, and timber growth is an increase in the value of that asset. The use of capital gain provisions when timber is cut or sold can reduce your taxes. It is far less expensive, even if you are in a low tax bracket, to pay tax on a longterm capital gain than to pay on ordinary income.
To get full benefit from these special provisions, it is important for landowners to maintain adequate and proper, records. Some of these records need to be permanent so expenses can be deducted years later when the timber is harvested.
Landowners need to keep records of capital expenditures on land, timber, and equipment. Assets placed in the land account or record include the land and improvements on the land, such as buildings, fences, etc. Items in the timber account should include a reasonable allocation of the total cost of the timber. The equipment account is charged with the cost of depreciable assets having a life of more than one year. Records of the various accounts need to be adjusted as costs are incurred or as sales are made.
In addition to being necessary for tax purposes, records can be helpful in determining the cost of growing a cord of wood or a thousand board feet of sawtimber. There is no limit to how helpful records can be.
Receipts from timber sales and the treatment of expenses will be discussed in subsequent articles.

Can you identify these large brown seeds for me? I found them near a church where some hippies had built a fire. Are they narcotic in nature?
Unknown, Hiram
The seeds you submitted are the seed of the Pawpaw tree, Asimina triloba (L.) Duval. There are no known narcotic properties of this tree or its seed. The tree is quite rare. Though it is found primarily in this part of the country, it is only found sparsely here.

RESPONSE
As an ex-farmer for a long time, I would like to share my experience with Fig Bushes.
In extremely cold winters Fig Bushes freeze to the ground and are killed, which results in sprouts from the roots as new growth the next year and no fruit that year as fruit comes on old growth. This is common in North Georgia and upper regions of the Southern States.
I bend my bushes down to the ground, as flat as they will lay, tying the top of one bush to the bottoms of the others with a rope or strong twine, until all limbs of the bush are flat on the ground. Then I cover them completely with pine straw. Fig bushes are very pliable and the process of bending them will not result in breakage. In late March the pine straw, or leaves, used for a protective cover can be removed and the bush springs back to normal with no damage either from the cold or the ben ding.
This is a very good way to keep Fig Bushes through extremely cold win ters which I would like to share with others.
Mrs. O. H., of Gainesville, advises that a piece of fat salt pork, hung in a rabbit cage two or three days before litters were due, would prevent the does from eating their young. She suggests that it be left in the cage until
the young are too old to be eaten.
