Ga's Delegation
Supports Farmers
A proposed $U2 million World Bank loan to Zambia to assist that country in developing its production of flue cured tobacco (see news article in last week's BULLETIN) caused me to register a strong protest against this loan with the President of the World Bank and President Nixon's advisor William Timmons.
In addition, I sent telegrams to each member of the Georgia
congressional delegation asking their assistance in fighting the loan which would adversely effect Georgia's tobacco exports.
Our congressional delegation, almost without fail, has responded quickly and with vigor to my telegrams. Senator Herman Talmadge responded with a copy of his letter to President Nixon which read in part, ". . .Flue-cured tobacco exports constitute one of the bright spots in American agricultural exports, and I think it would be extremely unwise for the U. S. to participate in a loan which could immediately endanger our own fluecured tobacco exports..."
Our new Senator Sam Nunn has also pledged his support against the loan.
Four of our Georgia congressmen, W. S. (Bill) Stuckey, Jr., Dawson Mathis, Jack Brinkley, and Ronald Ginn jointly appealed to the President stating, "A main objective of the loan is to double current production for export purposes. There is already a world wide surplus of flue-cured tobacco. In the U.S. alone, there are approximately 650 million pounds under CCC loan arrangements.
"Zambia already enjoys a commonwealth preference in the United Kingdom market of 18.5 cents a pound and further, it is anticipated that the United Kingdom will try and bring Zambia into the European Common Market . . . enabling Zambia to sell her tobacco in the Market duty free. Along with these two advantages, low cost production puts Zambia tobacco in a much more competitive position in relation to our own."
Congressmen Landrum, Davis, Stephens and Flynt also pledged their support to the Georgia Tobacco Farmer's in this matter.
I am greatly appreciative and encouraged by our Georgia delegations pledge to fight this matter as well as other matter's that would adversely effect Georgia's agriculture.
This office, had also recently contacted each Of these gentlemen about budget cuts aimed at many of our successful agricultural programs. The support of our Georgia delegation to rural Georgia and to its agriculture is commendable.

during this period of the year. Foremost in their minds are making new plan-
tings or revamping older ones.
Spotted Breed To Host Conference
For the beginning rose grower,
there are many considerations necessary before purchasing the first plant. They need to answer two main questions: "Will I have and take time
The Georgia Spotted Breeders
Association will host the National Spotted Breeders Conference, February 22-24, in Statesboro. There will be a show and sale of the spotted breed with animals from 12
states participating. The Secretary of the National
Association, Rick Maloney of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, will be
present at the Conference. Anyone interested in this breed of swine is invited to attend. Contact Curtis Knowles, Secretary-Treasurer, Georgia Spotted Breed Association, Route 1, Milan 31060, for details.
A small cone-shaped pile of soil,
to give roses the necessary care to keep them actively growing and producing the quantity and quality flowers desired." Secondly, "Do I have the proper location for growth of roses?"
The location should be a sunny spot, preferably full sun. However roses will grow in less sunlight but do not attempt them in a location receiving less than six hours of full sunlight.
The best locations are also those
that have good air movement and not closely adjacent to large trees or extensive shrub plantings. There should be sufficient slope where sur-
placed in the center of the planting face water will drain away. Roses do

hole, aids in spreading the roots uniformly in the hole and in adjusting the planting depth of the bush. When the plant is set on the

not like wet feet. Soil preparation, planting
technique and general care are very important. Most any soil as long as it is well drained, aerated and contains nutrients will grow roses. Amending
any type of soil is possible by deep
plowing or spading (a minimum of
12 inches, preferably 18 inches or
more).
To insure drainage, most soils
require the addition of .some
material. Pine bark has come into
the picture as an excellent material
because it does not rot or decompose
as readily as other materials.
Some gardeners, particularly with
heavy clays, prefer to add three to
four inches of sharp sand plus three
to four inches of organic matter such
as peat moss, compost, well rotted
sawdust, or sterilized barnyard
manure. Whatever material, it must
be thoroughly worked into the rose
bed. Preparing the soil several weeks
prior to actual planting is desirable.
Planting techniques center
around not crowding the roots and
making certain the plants are set at
the proper depth. Earlier prepared
soils will settle if sufficient time
passes between preparation and
planting.
If you think you have seen everything, just wait until you see 75 "Demons of the Dirt", start huffing and puffing next week in the Macon Coliseum.
Imagine a 12,000 pound giant tractor with enough power to drag a 70,000 pound load, 300 feet down a dirt track. Red Georgia clay is hauled into the Coliseum to form a dirt track three feet deep, 30 feet wide and 300 feet long. It is packed as hard as concrete and scraped after each pull.
A gaint tractor, geared to as much as 450 horsepower, is hitched to the "sled" on which rides the dead weight. A special "weight transfer machine" on the sled mechanically shifts the load off the back wheels on to the sled. As the tractor moves forward, more load is transferred to the sled being dragged on the ground. Finally, when forward motion has stopped, or the wheels begin spin-
ning, the pull is over and the distance is measured. The tractor going the
longest distance is the winner. For something really different try a trip to Macon on February 9-10 at the
Coliseum. Tickets may be obtained from .most farm equipment dealers at reduced prices for advance sales or from the Georgia Farm Equipment
Using a rose bed rather than individual holes and plants scattered over an area prevents crowding of roots. Check the stems and roots of plants carefully before planting.
Use a sharp clean pair of pruning
shears to prune away broken or damaged stems and roots. If plants are shipped or purchased bare root, you should soak the roots in a tub or pail of water for several hours before planting.
To plant, dig large deep holes in the planting area. Replace soil in the hole using it to build a cone. Have the top of the cone about level with

Dear Editor:
I noticed on the front page of the MARKET BULLETIN several weeks ago a picture of the Stone Mountain Park grist mill which I have seen. Now, how about the beltpowered cane mill? I know for a fact this mill was manufactured by the Columbus Iron Works Company prior to 1936. Up until then all cane mills were built by the Iron Works for the Southern Plow Company. I went to work for the C.I.W. Co., January 12, 1924 and retired 1965. I was working there when this mill was built. I would like to see a picture of this mill in the MARKET BULLETIN for this mill is an antique. The number of this mill is 18.

CAMELLIAS
Henry Clay, Savannah, is a Cooperative Extension Service horticulturist, and he works with camellias all the time. Still, he finds it "simply hard to imagine that there are hundreds of different varieties of camellias and that each variety produces a flower of distinct form and coloration."
Page 7 VEGETABLES
Want some vim, vigor, j
vitality
and vitamins? '
Then pick up on some of
those good vegetables. Ex-
tension Service nutrition
specialists say vegetables
such as carrots, turnips and
parsley are excellent sources
of vitamin A and B2. Beans,
peas and soybeans are high
in vitamin Bl and B2. And a
good source of niacin is
asparagus, mushrooms and
turnip greens.
DON'T PINCH!
That's the word when it comes to handling fruit. C. D. Spivey, University of
Georgia Extension horticulturist, points out that rough handling of fruits while you are selecting them causes spoilage and waste. If you think this doesn't cost you anything, Spivey reminds that such loss to the grocer usually is passed on to the consumer.
COMPACTED SOIL
Some Georgia farmers are having trouble with "trafficpan" or "plow-pan" soil.
These compacted areas may
severely reduce crop yields during a dry year. "Plowpan" is developed mainly by tillage instruments and usually occurs at a depth of 8 to 12 inches. This "pan" is often so compacted that roots cannot penetrate to the deeper soil moisture. Many growers, according to Ex-
tension specialists, are using subsoilers and chisel plows to disrupt the hardpan.
SOIL AMENDMENTS
Such materials as peat moss and decomposed leaves
add only slightly to a soil's fertility. Gerald Smith, Extension Service horticulturist, says sawdust,
wood chips and shavings may even reduce the nitrogen level for one to two years after they are mixed with the soil. Pine bark may cause a slight reduction in nitrogen level, too, but a normal fertilization program will prevent a problem.
CHECK MARKETS
Each year several Georgia farmers add vegetables to their production program for the first time. Extension Service Horticulturist J. M. Barber says many of these growers decide on a particular crop and go ahead and plant it without checking into the marketing possibilities first. Barber points out that this can be very hazardous, particularly
in areas that don't have an active farmers' market.
PECAN TREE CARE
Many pecan trees were transplanted in Georgia this fall and winter. Some will die next spring and summer because of planting techniques. If yours survives 'til then, be sure to water it every week to ten days if there's no rain. And if no fertilizer was applied at planting time, take care of this chore in March. Ray Livingston, Extension horticulturist, suggests three pounds of 10-10-10, scattered around the edge of the planting hole.

Planned Packaging For Produce
Gives Protection/ Convenience

The methods and materials used in packaging produce for the grocery shelves and for shipment to the store'does not just happen by chance. They have been
thoroughly researched and designed to give products the greatest protection for

the longest shelf life possible as well as giving the greatest convenience for the
consumer.
The slash pine is also known as the Cuban Pine and Caribbean
Once a product is packaged it will
be loaded and unloaded many times on its way from the manufacturer to the homemaker's kitchen. The packages must afford the physical protection needed to prevent crushing or bruising and to provide stacking strength for normal handling wood boxes, fiberboard cartons, cans, and glass jars provide this protection.
Some packaging, like polyethylene box liners, are used extensively to protect fragile fresh produce during shipment to market even though the consumer may never see this.
Products must be protected from moisture loss or moisture gain. When moisture loss is excessive, shriveling and underweight packages will result. Increases in moisture
above a specified level will cause
dried foods such as potato chips to
lose crispness, or they will cause mold to grow such as in bakery goods.
Sanitary protection barriers are required for all packaging to prevent
contamination from dust, and entry and destruction by bacteria and insects.
Excess contact with atmospheric
oxygen hastens quality deterioration
of many products. Thus packages must restrict gain or loss of gases
such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen for many prbducts.
Additional protective measures
must be taken to prevent odor loss or pick up, flavor loss, grease or fat loss, and changes in color. In these cases a package with a good barrier film is needed; including packages
that partially or completely exclude light which causes changes in color.
Pine. It is a native of the coastal

region of Georgia as well as the Bahamas and western Cuba. It derives its name from its tendency to grow in swampy or slash land.
The needles of the slash pine are arranged in bundles of 2 or 3 with a persistant basal sheath usually less than 1/2 inch long. They are from 6 to 10 inches long.
The tree itself grows to a height of about 80 to 100 feet. It is a very rapid growing tree of great importance in the production of naval stores as well as commercially valuable pulpwood and lumber. In this respect, it is one of the most
valuable trees of its kind to Georgia's economy.
Although its native habitat was the semi-swampy low lands, it has been extensively planted in the lower South in reforestation projects. The hard resinous wood is very similar to other pine wood. It is used in general construction, and is one of the chief sources of turpentine and rosin.

the surrounding area. Spread the roots over the cone.
Check to make certain the graft or bud union will be slightly above the surface of the bed. Bud unions are those enlarged or swollen portions of the stem near the base of the main stem. Gently sprinkle soil over the roots.
Continue until hole is about 3/4 full. Fill the hole with water and allow it to soak in. Repeat two or three times and add more soil to take care of settling. Leave a slight dishshaped depression to help channel water down into the root zone. Place three to four inches of mulch over the entire bed.
Check weekly to make sure that the soil is moist, not wet. If rainfall in inadequate, water thoroughly. In a few weeks you will need to begin your fertilization, disease and insect prevention program.

by canning or heat processing leads all other methods and provides maximum storage life. Tin cans are actually made of steel and lined in tin which prevents internal and external corrosion.
Some cans are coated in enamel because certain foods such as rhubarb, tomato juice cocktail, and some fish products react with tin. Other cans are made of aluminum which is lightweight, corrosion resistant and compatable with certain foods and beverages like soft drinks, frozen fruits juices, dairy products, and canned meats and fish.
Glass containers are popular because of their protective qualities and convenience. The advantages of these containers include the following: 1) they do not react with food; 2) they are almost 100 percent impermeable, nonporous, and odorless; 3) they are transparent; 4) they are strong; 5) they can be opened and resealed; 6) returnable bottles provide very low cost packaging.
Many products are packaged in
wraps or bags made of waxed paper, foil, cellophane, polyethylene, polypropylene and other similar materials. These packaging materials, allow for control of moisture con-
tent, which may need to be com-
pletely or partially restricted.

L. W. Jesup Some cows show very little external sign when they come in heat. Our
