Cotton Contracting
New Technique
We are in the midst of tremendous changes in the Cotton Industry and in Cotton Merchandising more changes have been made in the past four or five years than in the last 45 to 50. Two of the more important are: 1. Crop contracting, and (2) Acceptance by domestic and foreign buyers and the transportation industry of the universal density bale.
Crop contracting is a relatively new element in cotton merchandising brought about by the short crops in 1967 and 1968. Mills in an effort to tie up raw material suppliers began directly contracting with some producers and making contracts with merchants for future deliveries; the merchants to tie up bales thus sold, made contract with producers the large percentage of these on a hog-round basis. The goal at that time was total

number of bales. Some refinements then took place and contracts were tighter drawn to more specific quality elements.
Crop contracting is of enormous importance to cotton producers for these reasons: 1. It enables a producer to lock
in a profit for his production before his seed is planted. In the past he never knew whether he h'ad a profit or not until his cotton was sold in the fall; 2. It permits more orderly planning of his farming operations; 3. It permits him to finance his crop with a bank before planting season; 4. It frees him from dependence on government subsidies with the adverse public reaction these payments have generated. Responsible producers understand this.
The members of American Cotton Shippers Association are private firms small and large located from the Atlantic to the Pacific. They handle each year between 75% and 80% of the U. S. cotton crop not bought directly by mills. They are the merchandising arm and sales
force for cotton producers. The Atlantic Cotton Association Covers the Southeastern States. Five major functions performed by cotton merchants are: 1. To buy and assemble the in-
dividual bales of cotton offered for sale by thousands of farmers in local markets, class each bale, and pool those of the same grade, staple, length, color and character into even running lots. 2. To sell to spinners in spinners' markets and even running lots, at the time mills wish to buy, and to deliver the cotton at the time and place required by

Bad Rye Seed Found In Omega
Rewards
Of Fall
Garden
Thousands of pounds of rye seed "totally unadaptable" for use in Georgia have been shipped into the state, the Department of Agriculture discovered last week.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said his office has put a stop sale order on some 5,000 pounds of the rye offered for sale by Omega Farm Supply at Omega but investigation indicates that some 20,000 to 30,000 pounds of seed may have already been sold.
Irvin said the rye, which was produced in South Dakota and shipped into Georgia by Payne Bros. Seed Co. of Charlotte, N.C. is so unadaptable for planting in Georgia that it wouldn't even pay the farmer for preparing the land.
The seed tag on the rye does not state the variety as required by law and Irvin said farmers in south Georgia should check the seed tag on all rye they have purchased recently to insure it is labeled as to variety and is adaptable to growing conditions in their area.
Farmers in doubt as to what variety of rye they should plant for winter grazing should check with their local county agricultural agent, the Commissioner said.
Farmers purchasing rye not properly labeled as to variety and farmers approached by truckers peddling rye are urged to notify the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Atlanta.
Livestock Expo
Features Swine
An expected 2,500 visitors from the Southeast will gather at the Rural Development Center, Tifton, Nov. 28-29 as participants in Livestock Expo '73 for Swine.
The third livestock exposition and the second one on swine ever held at the RDC, Expo '73 will include talks, displays and demonstrations concerning swine production, processing and marketing.
Delightful, Delectable
A fall garden is a true delight. It can supply you and your family with a
variety of fresh vegetables to enjoy well into the fall months. Fall-grown
vegetables are usually of very high quality. Supply water as needed, use
pesticides properly and fertilize according to recommendations. You will be
rewarded with tender vegetables in a season when few persons are enjoying
such delicacies.

The award winners are recognized leaders in the application of modern farming and agribusiness techniques.
In addition, they are community leaders in agricultural and civic af-

Dear Editor:
I've read so much about bread trays until I thought I'd help you by sending you my picture with one. They are made of tupelo wood that grows by a stream of water. The tree is first cut down and a block cut off of it and it is hewed out. They're wonderful.
I don't know of anyone in Berrien
County that makes them now. I hope this will help you to explain to others what
they are. Mrs. L. J. Horten Route 2 Alapaha, Georgia 31622
(Editor's Note: Mr. Stutz Hall, Toomsboro 31090, makes these bread trays! He is presently out of wood but will continue to fill orders as soon as he gets the special wood needed for the tray. The bread tray is made from the Tupelo tree which grows in swamps. It is a soft hard wood that will not split and the sap of this tree has no taste. It takes approximately one week to make a bread tray. Although he has a croaker-sack full of orders, he will be taking additional orders in the future. Thank you, Mr. Hall, for calling us!)
Dear Editor:
I am enticed to write the first poem of my life on the mat-
ter (Bread Trays). You are welcome to use it, if desired: For months there's been a reader-haze
For that elusive gent who makes bread trays. Won't he have mercy on the mass of us
Who don't want, trays but disdain the fuss And tell the Yelpers where he stays -

'Round The B*rn
During my boyhood days, we had a mule named Mac. He was a good farm animal and on Sundays, pulled the buggy to our church and was tied to a pine tree in the church yard. Whenever he was driven to town, which was some distance from the church, he would turn in the drive way to the church. It was easier to let him stop by the church than to make him stay in the road to the county seat. On the return from town, Mac did not care to go in the church yard again that day.

Feverfew is an easily grown perennial, growing to a height of about two feet. It is a showy plant with numerous small daisylike flowers borne in a cluster and feathery green aromatic leaves.
The name feverfew comes from the plant's "fever-lessening" properties, attributed to it by herbalists for many centuries. The plant was cultivated around homes not only for its lovely flowers and medicinal qualities but also because it was a common belief that it purified the air and kept disease away.
Among the "cures" feverfew is supposedly responsible for is the ability to calm nervousness, lift up low spirits, relieve vertigo, and induce quiet restful sleep.
Feverfew tea is made by pouring 1 1/4 pints of boiling water over 1 ounce of the herb, fresh or dried. Besides making a good tea, herbalists claim that it makes a good insect repellent when the solution is rubbed on the skin.
The herb probably originated in southeastern Europe but because of its easy cultivation, lovely flowers, not to mention its medicinal properties, it quickly spread throughout most temperate zone climates. Horticulturists have developed numerous varieties of feverfew some which can be grown as border plants and others which succeed in semi-shade.

Fall Garden
(Continued From Page I)
to two inches apart. Have the soil deep and well prepared so roots will have depth to grow and develop
fully. This crop is not attacked by many insects or diseases.
Lettuce: Head and Leaf A small packet of seed will usually supply enough plants to plant 100 feet of row. Sow seed directly in the soil and thin, or grow the plants indoors in a coldframe or a hotbed. Plants that are thinned out can be easily transplanted. Plant seed about 1/4 inch deep in rows 16 inches apart for hand cultivation. Plant seed as early as the soil can be worked. Space the plants 14 to 16 inches apart. It takes four to six weeks to grow plants.
Mustard and Turnips
About 1/4 to 1 12 ounce of seed will plant 100 feet of row. Cover seed 1 /3 to 1/2 inch deep in rows 1 5 inches apart. Thin plants to three to four inches apart. Sow seed thickly so that seedlings are 1/2 to 1 inch apart. Allow them to grow until plants are about seven inches tall. Harvest by thinning plants. Remaining plants can be harvested by removing large leaves, allowing the buds to remain. You can get two or three additional harvests in this manner.
Turnips and mustard do not thrive well in the summer heat.
Collards The collard is a very hardy plant and will withstand wide /anges in temperature. One-fourth ounce of seed will plant 100 feet of row. This is a very popular crop in Georgia. It exceeds cabbage, turnip greens and spinach in protein, fats and carbohydrates. Harvest collards by cropping the leaves, allowing the bud to remain on the stalk. This lengthens the growing season because new leaves grow and expand to.be harvested later.
Onions Use about 1 12 ounce of seed or two pounds of sets to plant 100 feet of row. Onion plants can be transplanted to the garden row about four inches apart. Keep weeds out of the onions by shallow cultivation. Grow on level ground, and do not throw soil to or pull soil away while cultivating. When the plants start to mature (usually when about 3/4 of the tops have fallen to the ground) use a broom or rake to break over those still standing so that all the onions will mature thoroughly. When all the tops are dead, pull up the plants and spread them in the sun for a day or two. Place the tops over the bulbs. Then cut the tops off an inch above the bulbs. Store in slatted crates or mesh bags in a shed where air can circulate.
Beets Good quality red beets can be produced in the garden early. Plant one ounce of seed per 100 feet of row and thin to \wo to four inches. Cover the seed with about 1/2 inch
of soil.
Begin in Fall For Spring
Begin soil preparation in the fall for next spring turning the soil deep to bury litter in the bottom of the furrow. Fall preparation will insure proper soil conditions for early spring planting and will help decompose litter.
Take a soil test at this time to determine fertilizer and lime requirements. Your county agent can instruct you in proper soil sampling procedures and will provide you with materials and information on getting soil tests made. He will also make recommendations, based on soil test results, on the kind and amount of fertilizer and lime to use.
Cotton Contracting
(Continued From Page 1)
mills. 3. To store and to finance the sur-
plus spot cotton "including the excess ginnings over consumption during the major harvest months and also the annual carryover" with the aid of investors in cotton futures markets. 4. To combine activites of the United States cotton merchandising group to blanket the entire world and thus constitute the greatest, more powerful and aggressive sales force for cotton in the world. 5. To establish by competitive trading, market difference for different qualities of cotton based on spinning, value and relative market supplies.
A misconception exist in the minds of some producers and others unfamiliar with the merchandising of cotton when they compare the price level of a crop contract with market quotations on the futures exchange and automatically assume that the buyer is receiving a "windfall" profit of the difference. The cotton merchandising business does not work that way.
In cotton merchandising a firm endeavors to stay in a "hedge" position, that is, his purchases are offset by selling either to domestic or
foreign mills or by buying futures contracts. The cotton industry requires'enomous amounts of financing by banks, and banks simply will not permit cotton merchants to engage in speculation with their money.
In February and March of this year merchants responded to inquiries from domestic and foreign buyers and began contracting with
producers to obtain cotton for delivery against these bales. Mills both here and abroad, in turn make corresponding sales of cloth to their customers. As a consequence the entire structure of cotton merchandising and mills operations is threatened if merchants do not receive delivery of crop contracts in order to fill their commitments to mills and, in turn, mills can fulfill commitments to their customers.
The U.S.A. cotton industry is in a new era. The recently passed agriculture and consumer protection act continues for four more years a market oriented concept for cotton. Increased exports demands offer the best opportunity for producers to increase their cotton acreages with continued cooperation between producers, shippers and mills, the future of U.S. cotton looks bright.
A contract made in good faith between a willing seller and a willing buyer is the basis of trading in the cotton industry, both in this country and abroad. We are confident that the large majority of producers will observe their contracts just as buyers did last year when the market moved considerably lower than contracted prices. Future crop contracting will depend to a great extent on the manner in which producers deliver their contracts this year.
CLEANER CLOTHES
Water type is an important key to cleaner clothes, according to home economists at the Cooperative Extension Service. Hard water, they report, requires excessive detergent and may leave a gray, dingy deposit on clothing. Residents of hard water regions (south and northwest Georgia), should soften water for best laundry results. Mechanical softeners are available, but packaged softeners or conditioners are adequate substitutes.
