Coastal Plain Station "Is Where It's At"
Dr. W. P. Flatt, Director of the
University of Georgia College of
Agriculture Experiment Stations,
wrote last week about the ad-
ministrative reorganization of the
Experiment Stations in a continuing
effort to provide effective research
support to Georgia's dynamic and
progressive agriculture.
It was my good fortune to be
assigned
the South Georgia
area and to be
relocated to the
Coastal Plain Sta-

I see this as a
fresh challenge

development of an extensive
agricultural research program on the
University of Georgia campus there.

is concerned, the Coastal Plain "is where it's at." It is the heart of a geographical region extending from Virginia to Texas and which has unlimited potential for food and fiber production. When one superimposes the new technology and knowhow being developed by state and federal research scientists at institutions like the Coastal Plain. Station at Tifton on the natural resource base -- generally manageable soils, mild temperatures, favorable rainfall, and enormous underground water supplies there is nothing that can prevent its becomming the real breadbasket of America.
More important even than the
natural resource base is the human resource a population naturally
oriented toward agricultural pursuits. People who have a long history of working with the soil and eagerly accept the innovations and scientific advances developed and extended by the research and education institutions in the region.
It is the goal of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations, and especially those units in South Georgia, to provide the impetus, and the scientific and technological inputs to help, along with the Cooperative Extension Service and the Rural Development Center, focus the vast resources of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture on the progressive and orderly development of Georgia's

Irvin Assures Winter Annual Grazing Crops
Tobacco Growers Of Selling Time
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin reassured Georgia tobacco farmers this week that they will have ample time to sell their tobacco on Georgia markets even though new estimates on crop production caused a slight decrease in selling time per day.
Irvin said that the buying companies assured him, before the season began, that they would stay in Georgia until Georgia farmers had had ample time to sell their leaf.
New crop estimates released this week indicate that the Georgia crop will be about 102 million pounds this year instead of the previously predicted 105 million pounds. The new figures caused a few pounds per day reduction in the amount of Georgia leaf to be sold. Reportedly, some Georgia growers were concerned that they would not have sufficient time to sell their leaf.
Irving said the original schedule of 1 set markets staying open through August 23 and two set markets staying open through September 6 still prevails and there is no cause for Georgia growers to be concerned about the reduced per day poundage.

To Satisfy Your Cow's Palato
Soil and climate throughout the Southeast is well adapted for the production
of several winter annual forage crops. Winter annual grazing crops are high in
protein (18-22%) and dry matter digestibility (68-75%). Total dry matter yield
usually averages between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds per acre. Therefore, they fit
well in a total feed program to supply cattle needs during the winter.
Farmers should consider the high
quality of winter annual crops and
use them efficiently. For brood cows,
this may be limited grazing; for
growing yearlings, it may be full
grazing plus a high energy low
protein supplement such as corn,
citrus pulp or silage, depending on
the total system. Winter annuals have
a high feed value - use them wisely.
Rye and oats are the most com-
monly used winter annual forage crops; however, wheat and ryegrass
can be used quite well for winter
grazing. Rye will germinate with less

mature. It is therefore, well suited to plant

I am just a curious individual. I have read so many notices in the Bulletin inquiring about the man that makes old wooden bread trays. The tray really must be some item. Could you give us a little run down in your column as to what it is that makes it so much in demand?
(Be sure that you buy and plant only recommended varieties of forage crops from the southeast.)
Ryegrass can also be used alone. When used alone, early fall forage is usually less than small grain but total season growth is about equal.

We have had several inquiries about the wooden bread trays in the
Bulletin and why they are so popular. Obviously, it is due to their rarity
that makes them so expensive in antique shops, plus the return of the
popularity of making one's own bread. The shape of the tray is perfect for
shaping the loaves, kneading, letting the bread rise, etc. They are also
useful and ornamental as fruit bowls, table decorations and conversation
pieces.

I would like to know if margarine can be frozen. If so, how long will it keep? Will freezing change the taste?
Mrs. L. A., Americus
Our home economist replies that margarine can be preserved by freezing and that to do so would not change the.taste substantially. It can be stored in the freezer for up to a year without losing its quality. Sorry

QUERCITRON
Yellow seems to be one of the easiest colors to produce due to the large number of common plants that produce the dye as well as the ease in which this dye is obtained.
The first source of yellow, gold and orange dye to be discovered in the New World was Quercitron, a dye rendered from the bark of the American Black Oak. As a com mercial crop, it eventually equaled and surpassed indigo in value.
Bark is stripped in the spring from trees which have been felled. The outer bark is removed and the soft inner bark is left to dry in an airy place. When dry, it can easily be powdered.
BRACKEN FERN
Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum), a coarse fern distributed practically throughout the world, produces a lovely greenish-yellow color when the young "fiddleheads" are steeped in hot water for two hours.
Poison sumac is the source for several colors; leaves and young shoots produce a tan to dark brown dye; fuzzy red berries make a yellowish tan dye when soaked overnight and boiled 30 minutes.
SCOTCHBROOM Scotch Broom which is so easily found in gardens and nurseries produces a yellow dye when one pound of chopped yellow-flowering branches are soaked overnight and boiled one hour. Saffron (Crocus sativus) traces its importance as a yellow dye to the Middle Ages. The dye is produced from the bright-orange stigmas of the fall-flowering crocus. Goldenrod produces a beautiful old gold dye by boiling the flowers to extract their dye. And even common privet con tains the dying ingredients to produce a yellow and golden dye. When the colonists first tried their hand at using these natural plant dyes, many of the yellows, golds, etc. turned out muted or drab. The relatively quiet, subtle tones were described as "sad" and it was these sad colors which dominated many colonial color schemes. The drab, muted colors used in the Puritan household were then perhaps the result of improper dying rather than a reflection of moral rectitude.

Coastal Plain Station Give Home A Personal Touch
(Continued From Page 1)
Coastal Plain region. To achieve this goal requires highly trained scientists with adequate support in the form of technical assistants, operating funds and equipment, modern up-to-date laboratories, and first class facilities.
In recent years, increased fund support has made it possible to go a long way toward meeting these basic needs. The Experiment Stations, nevertheless, are beset by the same inflationary pressures as all other business and agricultural enterprises today. If maximum performance and productivity are to be achieved, additional substantial inputs will be required in the years ahead.
The Coastal Plain Station and its associated units are grateful for the continuing interest and support by the people of Georgia through their elected representatives. The scientists and staff both willingly and enthusiastically stand ready to accept their role of helping make a better life for Georgians producers, processors, marketers, and consumers all.
Winter Grazing
(Continued From Page 1)
prepared seedbed. Plant 100 to 120 pounds of small grain seed per acre. The amount of small grain seed can be reduced by replacing pound for pound with 20 to 30 pounds of ryegrass. When ryegrass is used alone, the seeding rate should be 4050 pounds per acre. Fifteen to twenty pounds of Crimson clover or five to eight pounds of Arrowleaf clover should be used in mixtures.
Winter annual crops respond highly to nitrogen fertilization. An intensively grazed crop can efficiently use 150 to 180 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Nitrogen should be split into three equal applications; first at planting or soon after; second mid-winter; last application in midspring; this one is very important if ryegrass is being grazed. Phosphorus and potassium should be maintained at a medium level - use soil test as a guide.
Winter annuals should have a well established root system before grazing begins. Plants should not be abused by overgrazing, which often causes excessive trampling. When forage is not sufficient to supply animal needs, feed hay or other feeds. Remove cattle from fields when overgrazing is indicated. Rotational grazing or limited grazing can often help in efficient forage utilization. Much of the potential animal gains may be lost if sufficient cattle are not available to fully utilize spring growth. If this situation occurs, grazing area should be limited to cow needs and excess forage or grain, harvested.

1 In 21 On Farm:
South Drops To 2nd
There were only 9,712,000 persons living on U.S. farms in 1970. That's down 38 pet. from 10 years earlier. It also means that only 4.8 pet. of the total population or 1 person in 21 were living on farms that year.
Another switch: The South, which led in the number of persons on farms in 1960, dropped to second place as the North Central States moved into first in 1970.

And Save Money Al Same Time
Making curtains and draperies is fun, helps save on expenses and gives the
homemaker an opportunity to add a personal touch to her home decoration.
Accurate measurement of windows is the first step toward beautiful draperies.
The second is to determine the proper amount of fabric that is needed. These
