Price Freeze
Hurts Farmers
President Nixon's freeze on prices this past week may seriously adversely affect Georgia's cash farm income this year. Although I agree that some action is needed to stop inflation, it appears that every action taken in Washington lately is designed to hender the American farmer and aid other segments of the economy.
The President's order freezes food prices at the highest wholesale and retail levels ex-
perienced during the first eight days of I June. These levels reflect the remnants of the i Florida vegeta|ble crop and are insufficient to insure the I Georgia farmer a reasonable return on his product.
Georgia's high quality vegetable crops, just now beginning to move to market, must command a better price than those brought by the tail end of Florida's crops.
Although the President said he was not freezing food prices at the farm level, his action does just that. The profit margin on perishable fruits and vegetables is too narrow to enable produce dealers and stores to pay the Georgia farmer any more than they were paying for the dregs of the Florida vegetable crop if their prices are frozen at the first of June level.
In addition, the farmer is paying higher prices established earlier for fuel, fertilizer and other necessities and his labor costs can and probably will go up as there was no freeze placed on wages.
Georgia's watermelon and vegetable crops were cut back as much as forty percent this year due to adverse weather conditions. However, farmers were hoping to recoup some of this loss with high quality produce bringing a good price.
For example, remnants of the Florida sweet corn were being sold at farm prices of from 40 to 45 cents per dozen during the past two weeks. Georgia farmers need and should receive from 65 to 70 cents a dozen for his higher quality corn which will be moving to market this week.
Another example is the farm price on watermelons. Florida watermelons were averaging about 2 1/2 cents a pound during the first week of June. There is every indication that Georgia watermelons would bring from 4 to 5 cents per pound if it were not for the price freeze.
By the time the 60 day price freeze ends, the peak of the Georgia harvest will be over.
In addition, the farm milk price

Mountain Trout In South Georgia? "Cornucopia One"

Don't Laugh; May Be Big Business

Food Exposition Set For November

Mountain trout in South Georgia? It's not as ridiculous as it sounds. In fact, it's being done now. Dr. Tom Hill, assistant professor in the Department of Fisheries and Entomology at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, is heading up research as to the feasibility of this new agricultural product.
Conditions for growing, disease problems, and possible processing methods are all being studied with the use of fishery facilities at the experiment station.
Actually, the growth of these fish usually accustomed to the cooler climates of the North Georgia mountains is an extension of commercial catfish production which is rapidly becoming a large industry in parts of South Georgia.
The experiment stemmed from

Consumers will have a chance to see how the food industry operates and meet representatives from many of the major food companies at "Cornucopia One." The giant food exposition here is being sponsored by the Georgia Agribusiness Council. It is scheduled for November 4, 5 and 6 at the Marriott Motor Hotel.
Theme of the show will be "An Odyssey In Changing Food Lifestyles."
The exposition is designed to let the consumer and the food industry meet face-to-face so they can have a better understanding and awareness of the problems each faces.

The prospects of producing mountain trout as a profitable business in South Georgia are good, according to scientists. Trout can grow to a marketable one pound size in five South Georgia winter months.

Cattle Rustling
On The Upswing
Recent high prices of cattle have brought the thieves and rustlers out of hiding. Branding, long encouraged for individual identification of cows to determine good producers, can also help prevent cattle loss through cattle rustling.
Reports from county agents and others throughout the state have demonstrated that cattle stealing has increased tremendously during the past year.
There are many common sense things that you can do to prevent cat-

the fact that catfish could only be produced during the warm summer months, and the ponds or raceways were going unused during the winter.
Results of the experiment indicated that winter temperatures in the southern part of the state were essentially right for the growth of these trout. Trout cannot grow in a temperature of over 70 fahrenheit, with 55 to 60 being the ideal.
The project was started in the winter of 1971 when the catfish raceways were stocked with trout. These trout were bought as fingerlings from commercial hatcheries and were placed in a raceway approximately 100 feet long by 10 feet wide with 2,500 per raceway. Each raceway holds about 4,500 cubic feet of water and has a one and one-half percent slope from one end to the other. Flowing water is pumped through the raceways from a nearby pond and is recirculated by the use of underground pipes.
The purpose of the flowing water is to remove waste and to provide aeration. The fish were fed a regular commercial trout feed twice a day.
Due to the favorable temperatures, the fish grow remarkably well, with a seven inch fingerling

Go. 4-H Program
Largest In U. S.
Georgia's 4-H program is the largest in the nation. It began in 1905 when 101 boys in Newton County established the first Boy's Corn Club.
Since that time, Georgia 4-H has expanded to include some 160,000 urban and rural boys and girls between the ages of nine and 19.
Poultry, Livestock
Up 11 Percent In '72
Sales of livestock and poultry products grossed Georgia farmers $777,152,000 in 1972, an 11 percent increase over 1971 receipts, according to W. A. Wagner, agricultural statistician for the Georgia Crop Reporting Service.
Preliminary reports indicate cattle and calf sales increased 27.8 percent to $178 million, hog sales rose 26.8 percent to $122 million, dairy product sales were up 8.3 percent to $87 million and commercial broiler sales rose by 7.2 percent to $215 million.
Down were turkey sales receipts by 13.3 percent and egg sales receipts by 3.5 percent.

brand all your cattle. Write to Marks and Brands
Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street, S. W., Atlanta, Georgia 30334 and ask for an application for brand record.
When you have received your application form, design a first, second, and third choice of a brand for your home operation. You will be less likely to be duplicating someone else's brand if you design yours around your initials or something related to your own operation. Send the application form to the Marks and Brand Division and one of your choices will be approved for your farm.

RDC Seeks Farmers
For Farm Show
Georgia farmers will be going to the Midwest's Farm Progress Show in Lebanon, Indiana, in late September.
The Rural Development Center near Tifton is seeking 75 farmers and agribusinessmen to attend the event, considered one of the best agriculturally - oriented shows in the U. S.
Details can be obtained from Larry L. Marchant, conference coordinator at the Rural Development Center, Box 1209, Tifton, Georgia 31794.

Have you ever considered how much water can be wasted in small ways? For instance, a hot water faucet leaking one drop per second wastes 2,500 gallons a year. And for a pipe-run of only 20 feet between the water heater and the point of use, about two quarts of water runs through the faucet in the average kitchen, this wastes 1,040 gallons of water in a year.
These suggestions can help cut water bills and save a valuable natural resource.
(1) Have the water heater installed as near the point of use as

Recipes Of The Week

PEACH ICE CREAM

1 cup milk 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons flour
Few grains salt 2 egg yolks

1/8 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup thin cream
3 or 4 large ripe peaches

Scald the milk, mix the sugar, flour, and salt; stir in scalded milk to make a mixture which will pour readily; add to the remainder of the milk in the top of a double boiler. Stir until the mixture has thickened; cover and cook 10 minutes. Beat the egg yolks slightly; stir in a little of the thickened milk; return to double boiler; cook 1 minute. Cool; add cream and flavoring. Strain if the mixture is not perfectly smooth. Begin to churn ice cream. Pare, slice and crush peaches with a potato masher; (there should be 1 cup.) Add peaches to the mixture when it begins to become mushy. Serves 6.

Plantain Lily, also known as hosta, is a hardy foliage plant native to China and Japan. Although they are now members of the Lily family they were previously classified with the Funkia and Niobe families.
As a shade loving plant they are unequalled. They are happy in any kind of soil and form large lush clumps of foliage quickly. In the summer the plants produce long flower spikes of funnel-shaped flowers in lilac-blue or white.
Although hostas will thrive in a perennial border, they also like moist, shady locations. They are easily propagated by dividing the clumps in spring or fall.
Plantain lilies are very oldfashion and have thrived in gardens for many years. They are often called daylilies but this misnomer should be applied only to those flowers of the Hemerocallis family.
Of the different varieties available, there are solid green leaf, variegated leaf, gray-blue leaf or white flowers, blue or lavendar blossoms.

Price Freeze
(Continued From Page 1) has been intolerable for some time because of the tremendous increase in grain and feed prices. Georgia dairymen are and have been operating in the red for some time and more and more are going out of business everyday. Milk producers must have a better price for their products or we are going to be faced with a serious milk shortage.
The consumer needs to be concerned about farm prices as well as the farmer. American consumers have come to expect high quality produce and other farm products on her grocery shelves constantly. If everyone does not get concerned about the farmers plight, we may soon see the day of empty produce, meat and dairy shelves in our markets.
Go. Leads South In Pulpwood Value
Georgia, for the 24th consecutive year, led the south in pulpwood production.
The pulpwood harvest value was $174,194,400 for Georgia. The south as a whole yielded more than one billion dollars worth of pulpwood.
MAN'S OLDEST FOOD
Tune is the Dairy Month and dairy scientists at the Cooperative Extension Service are joining the industry to spread the word about "Bossy's" potion. According to these experts, milk is the oldest food known to man since no one except Adam and Eve began life without it. The experts say records exist showing the cow being milked in 9.000 B. C.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Straight Line

I am looking for something to use in my flower beds to keep the weeds and grass down. They keep me worked down and they are still there. Please tell me what to use and where to buy it.
Mrs. A. E., Macon There are methods of treatment that should eliminate some of your problems with weeds in your flower garden. Dacthal spray or granules may be applied around the bedding plants at the time of transplant or af ter working the beds. Dymid or Enide are herbicides which may be used around various ornamental plants, and Casaron is recommended for cer tain wood ornamentals. (We suggest that you check the label to determine if the chemical will be safe for use on your particular plants.) All of these herbicides may be obtained from your local garden centers or nurseries.

I hope you can help me with my problem with tiny black ants in my okra. They cover the plants from the time it comes up until frost. I have tried several things to get rid of them but nothing works. Any suggestions?
H. D., Atlanta The ants in your okra are feeding on aphids on the plants. We suggest that you spray with Malathion to eliminate the aphids and perhaps the at tention of the tiny black ants will be directed elsewhere. Also, you might use Chlordane or any ant killers near your garden.
****

A storm blew down half of my apple tree and revealed that it was hollow and full of large black ants. Before I knew it, my nephew sprayed it with a roach and ant spray. My question is will it be possible to eat the apples when they ripen, even though the trunk was sprayed?
Miss C. B., Rome Our information is that the apples should be edible if they were not sprayed along with the trunk of the tree.
****
I have a mimosa tree that is losing its leaves while they are still green. I cannot see any insects or worms on it. Can you tell me what is causing this and what to do about it?
A. G., Parrott More than likely your mimosa tree has mimosa wilt, which has destroyed most of these trees in Georgia. It usually starts on a limb and spreads rather rapidly to the rest of the tree. We regret that we know of no preventative for this wilt.
****
I would like to know what to use on an iron pot to keep it from rusting and from turning food black?
B. S., Hartwell We suggest that your iron pot needs seasoning. This process consists of coating the pot in question with unsalted grease and placing in a moderate oven (350) until the coating burns off, (approximately two to three hours). Remove the pot, wipe with a paper towel and coat again lightly. This light coating of grease may need repeating after each use.
****
My pet chickens have been laying extremely well lately and I wonder how long they will continue to do so. Can you offer any enlightenment?
N. C., Uvalda "Cackles" says laying hens usually lay on the average of 12 to 14 mon ths and the life of the bird wi*ll *be* 2*4 months or longer.

Mountain Trout
(Continued From Page 1)
growing to a marketable one pound size in about five months from November to March.
"There have been relatively few problems with the production of the fish so far," says Dr. Hill, "The only major difficulty has been an increased number of parasites on the fish due to the warmer temperatures."
Another thing that will have to be calculated is the maximum growth. Keeping the quality of the flowing water high could become a problem if the aeration is not sufficient.
As to processing the fish there are still several alternatives. Since hauling the fish to stock North Georgia streams would be impractical due to the enormous quantities of water needed for transportation, and due to the fact that the fish cannot survive in the summer, there must be local consumption.
One idea which might prove profitable would be a fish-out, where persons could pay so much per pound to catch these exciting game fish. Other ideas would be to sell the fish to processors or to individual consumers and businesses.
Although the production of mountain trout is still under research, it is not too far-fetched to visualize the profitable production of these fish in the already existing catfish ponds of South Georgia in the near future. By Jerry Landmon, Reprinted from the Abraham Baldwin Agriculturist

possible. (2) Replace washers on leaky
faucets. (3) Don't install the water heater
in a totally unheated area; this increases operating costs because of greater than normal heat loss from the heater to surrounding cold air.
(4) Schedule major cleanups (washing walls and ceilings, etc.) when the ground is warm because the water supply to the water heater is colder in winter than in summer and fall and costs more to heat.
(5) Take showers rather than tub baths, which generally use more water. .
(6) Plug the sink drain when shaving or washing. Don't leave water' running unnecessarily.
(7) Place a plastic container filled with sand in the toilet reservoir water to reduce the amount of water used for flushing.
(8) Don't set the water heater thermostat too high. Without a dishwasher, 135 degrees is sufficient; with a dishwasher, 150 to 160 degrees is adequate.
(9) Operate dishwasher or automatic washer with a full load to avoid waste.
(10) Close both the cold and hot water faucets or valves that supply the washer after the laundry is finished.
INDOOR PLANTS
' Many indoor plants can be revitalized a bit during this period of the year. Indoor plants which are growing in pots with drainage holes can be placed outside in the shady shrub borders.
Moving the plants from inside the home to full sun will result in catastrophe. Foliage and stems will be burned. If you have a shaded patio or terrace, you might use your indoor plants for added interest. Rainfall, plus watering and fertilizing, will revive your plants and help them develop new stems and foliage. By fall you may be amazed at growth as well as health and vigor of your plants.
