Caring For Land Is Your Privilege
Good management using the latest techniques with great planning and fore-thought is not only confined to business and industry.
There is a tremendous area endeavor where good management may involve burning, burying, rotating, enriching, cutting and storing. That area is land management. It is easy to take for grant-
__________ ed that underneath just about every business in existence is the same thing ... land. Under, every well kept home and vegetable stand is the same thing. But who thinks of managing all this land? Who cares?
The farmer cares. So do all conservationists no matter what part of

the environment they like to concentrate on. These people belong to a rapidly dwindling minority, however, and in many cases they are desperately trying to convince the world that everyone should care. Everyone.
This is why there is a Soil Stewardship Week. Now in its nineteenth year, it is being observed May 27 to June 3 in every state in the Nation. The idea is that people in all walks of life should be reminded at least once a year that no one is free of a dependence on the soil. They need to know that their support and understanding of the importance of the land is all that can preserve what is left. Some discouraged conservationists might say, "Wait until they get hungry. Then you'll see a lot of support for conservation efforts and good land management." But it shouldn't get to that point. It is hoped that the observance of Soil Stewardship Week over the years will remind and reawaken the populace to the facts of land.
The Week is sponsored by the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee and the Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Rather than talking, they have been doing something about improving the land in Georgia for 36 years and the improvement is obvious. It can be seen everywhere. For these men and the landowners who have cooperated in their program to see that all Georgia land is well managed, the Week is a reward for a job well done.
For those who have taken from the land and reaped the benefits of the good done by the small group of soil stewards, the Week should be a time to give thanks and a pat on the back to these stewards for that work.

I hope that you can tell me about the enclosed insects. They swarm around the screens. Household sprays kill them, but they keep coming back.
S. A., Carnesville
Our Plant and Entomology Division has identified them as drain or sewer flies. They are usually found in drains and around sewers. To prevent their presence in your drains, boil some water and pour down the drains occasionally. * * * *

Please advise if wild strawberries are poisonous.
C. M., Atlanta
Wild strawberries, called yellow strawberries because of their yellow bloom, are not poisonous. As a matter of fact, they have been used in making jellies and jams for years.
Dahlonega Hosts Arts, Crafts Fair
On the same site where millions of dollars of gold was once mined, the first annual Dahlonega Arts and Crafts Fair will be held June 16 and 17, 1973, at Gold Hills of Dahlonega on Highway 60, 1/2 mile from the courthouse square.
Artists and craftsmen will demonstrate their talents and offer their handmade products for sale. Applications are available for those who would like to participate and may be obtained by writing Mrs. Diana Hyams, 4-8 Faculty Hills, Dahlonega, 30533, Ph. 404/8643236 or Mrs, Nancy Viles, North Hall Rd., Dahlonega, 30533, Ph. 404/864-3274.

(5) Store pesticides in cool, dry places away from food and feed. (6) Store application equipment out of reach of children and pets.
Grow Your Own Protein Feed While Growing Forage Crop
By W. H. Sell, Extension Agronomist
Protein is an essential item in the diet of cattle. Increasing cost of protein from soybeans, fish meal and cottonseed has added to the cost of feeding cattle.
Grain Sorghums Have Potential For Ga. Farmers
By Stan Savage
Extension Poultry Scientist
In a grain sorghum meeting held at the Rural Development Center several economically important facts were discussed concerning the raising, marketing, and feeding of grain sorghums and their potential to Georgia.
As with any crop, there must be both a supply and demand. The poultry industry alone could consume approximately 30 million bushels of milo each year. Grain sorghum can be substituted for about 50 percent of the corn in layer and grower diets. Beef cattle and swine can also have a large part of the corn substituted by milo.
As more cattle are finished in Georgia, there will be a greater demand for both corn and grain sorghum. The potential for consumption of grain sorghum by livestock in Georgia could reach 50 million bushels per year within the next decade.
To realize this potential, it will be necessary to increase the amount of grain sorghum raised, to improve marketing of grain sorghum, and to provide a consistent supply of grain sorghum for the animal industry.
Grain sorghum has a good potential for partial replacement of corn. Grain sorghum could become an important grain crop. It is more dependable than corn, requires less moisture, and may be used in a double-cropping system.
Many of the production practices and problems are discussed in two research reports: number 98, entitled "Grain Sorghum Production In Georgia," and number 149, entitled "Corn and Grain Sorghum Performance Test - 1972." These may be obtained by writing to H. B.

Grazing and hay crops can supply protein needs for most cattle. High producing crops such as hybrid bermudagrasses, (Coastal, Coastcross I, Midland) summer annuals, (millets, Sorghum Sudan crosses, Sudangrasses) and wi'nter annuals (ry_e, oats, wheat, ryegrass) are capable of producing great quantities of protein.
Management, fertilization, frequency of harvest or age of plant growth at time of utilization, is the key to producing protein with forage crops.
Research conducted at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station, Tifton, Georgia, shows that the protein content of coastal bermudagrass can range from above 18 percent on three week old bermudagrass fertilizers with 600 pounds of nitrogen per acre to less than 10 percent on 12 week old bermudagrass fertilized at the same rate. See table 1.
The same data shows per acre production of protein ranges from more than 2200 pounds per acre when the forage is utilized at six weeks of age to more than 2400 pounds of protein per acre when forage is utilized at three weeks of age. In addition to protein, forage crops contain digestible energy.
Research workers throughout the southeast have found that both sum-" mer annuals and winter annuals can produce forage containing from 16 to 20 percent protein when properly managed. Summer annuals should be kept grazed or clipped to a height of about 18 to 24 inches. Taller, stemy plants will contain less protein and energy than shorter leafy plants. Winter annuals forage crops contain a good level of protein and energy from fall, throughout the winter and spring growing season.
Protein content decreases rapidly in late spring as plants begin to form seed heads. Both summer and winter annuals can utilize 150 to 200 pounds of nitrogen with intensive utilization. Nitrogen should be applied in two to three split applications.
All legume forage crops are good

Dear Editor:
To keep fresh strawberries up to two weeks longer, do not wash freshly picked berries, or remove stems. Loosely pack in quart jar, tightly seal lid and keep in refrigerator. Do not add any water at all as this will make them spoil faster.

Edible heads of Artichoke (XX).
Artichoke means different things to different people. To some it means a tender, leafy vegetable delicacy, served with dipping sauce; to others artichoke implies an underground tuber similar to a potato and also used in making delicious relishes and pickles. The fact is there are three distinct kinds of artichokes that are grown as vegetables.
The globe artichoke, Cynara Scolymus, is a vigorous thistle-like perennial about 4 feet high with coarse leaves, stout stems and large fleshy flower heads. It is a member of the Daisy family and is native to Europe. They were brought to this country by French settlers through Louisiana and have often been referred to as "French artichokes". These artichokes are cultivated mainly where the climate is cool, foggy, and free of frost.
The globe artichoke is most often eaten by pulling the leaves off, one at a time, dipping them into a sauce and eating the tender part of the leaf by drawing it through the teeth.
Tuber of Jerusalem Artichoke (XX).
The Jerusalem artichoke, Helianthus tuberosus, is not really an artichoke at all, nor is it related to Jerusalem in any way. It is a hardy, tuberous-rooted perennial that thrives in almost any soil. In fact, the plant often spreads like a weed since frost will not kill tubers left in the ground from one season to another.
The Jerusalem artichoke is a member of the sunflower family. It has been cultivated for centuries in this country and is native to North America. The tubers of this perennial are dug when the leaves turn yellow in autumn. They are used in similar ways as potatoes and also in making relishes and pickles.
To start a Jerusalem artichoke garden, plant tubers in early spring, 4 to 5 inches deep, 10 to 12 inches apart in rows 3 feet'from each other. Try to keep the area free of weeds. Other than this, they require no care unless you don't want them to spread freely.
The third artichoke is the

protein producers. Most legumes average about 20 percent protein when utilized in the leafy vegetative stage of growth. Legumes do not require nitrogen fertilization. Good yields of legume crops are dependent on a well inoculated plant and a good supply of phosphorus, potassium and a soil pH of 6.0 to 6.5.
Nitrogen is the fertilizer element
that has the greatest effect on grass yield, and content of protein. Fertilizer cost per pound of protein produced varies with rate of nitrogen and cost of nitrogen fertilizer. See table 2. These data show coastal ber-
mudagrass fertilized with 300 pounds of nitrogen and harvested every four weeks has a protein content of more than 15 percent and produced more than 2000 pounds of protein per acre during a growing season.
Protein cost based on cost of fertilizer only is 2.1 cents per Ib. The present cost of common protein supplements ranges from 15 to 20 cents per pound of protein. Many cattlemen can lower their cost ot protein by growing forage crops.
Digestible energy content of well managed forage crops usually ranges from 50 to 60 percent.

Roy Named To Post In Ag Department
Rojbert F. Ray, 38, a native of Crawford County and manager of the Macon Farmers Market, has been named Assistant Commissioner in charge of marketing for the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
He will be succeeded in Macon by S. E. Mathis, 30, a native of Brooks County presently living in Milledgeville.
Ray has been manager of the Macon market for the past two years. He was elected president of the Crawford County Farm Bureau at only 19 years of age and at 22 was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation.
Mrs. Jones Named
Top U.S. Cattleman
One of the best cattleman in the nation is a lady from Georgia. Mrs. R. W. Jones of Leslie, in Sumter County, has been known as one of the best purebred cattle producers for many years.
Now it's official, Mrs. Jones has been named the 1973 Seedstock Producer of the Year by the Beef Improvement Association.
Also, the RWJ ranch received the Georgia Beef Cattle Improvement Association "Outstanding Herd Award" each year from 1969 to 1972.
Her husband was named to the American Polled Hereford Hall of Fame in 1971.
One recognition Mrs. Jones is especially proud of is that they were responsible for the first herd of registered cattle ever sent from the East to the West. This came about when she sold 187 head of cattle to a breeder in Colorado._________
Grain Sorghums
(Continued From Page 1)
Harris, Georgia Station, Experiment, Georgia, 30212. Dr. Harris stated that over the past three years, the top five grain sorghum hybrids have outperformed the top five corn hybrids.
The marketing developments that need to be made in grain sorghum will be made through the education of both producers and consumers to the fact that grain sorghum has a good potential for utilization in rowcropping and animal diets.
If a farmer knows that he will have a market for a crop, he will be more likely to grow it; and if a consumer knows that he will have a consistent supply of milo, he will be more apt to use it in his diets; therefore, there is a great need for both the supply and the use of it.
If supply and demand can be relatively equal within the next few years, the potential for raising grain sorghum in Georgia seems almost limitless.
There are just over seven million acres of crop land in Georgia. Considering yields of approximately 100 bushels of milo per acre, this means that within the next few years, there would be a potential of utilization of between three and seven percent of the total crop land in the State of Georgia for the production of grain sorghum. Grain sorghum could then become an economically important crop.
Chinese or Japanese artichoke,
Stachys Sieboldii. It is not known
widely in America but is native to
northern China. It is a member of
the Mint family, Labiatae, and is
more similar to the Jerusalem ar-
tichoke than the globe since it is
cultivated for its spiral-shaped
edible tubers.
