Pays Off The demand for people trained in agriculture, particularly those individuals with two-year degrees, has accelerated to an all-time high. The available jobs are first-rate! The pay is good! Contrary to the old general belief, agriculture no longer connotes an individual in ragged overalls following a mule and plow. "Farming" today involves enormous mechanical horsepower and specialized farm management training. ABAC has a current listing of about 15 farm management jobs with limited prospects to fill them. Chemical companies, seed, feed and fertilizer dealers, farm equipment manufacturers and distributors, food processing and marketing companies, and many other agriculturally related industries provide a constant variety of openings for trained personnel. One such company has indicated the need for about 100 new employees.
At Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College the supply of trained people for jobs cannot meet the demands so our students are assured of placement upon successful completion of their programs. Unique within the University System of Georgia, ABAC offers a complete college transfer program in agriculture and is the only college in Georgia authorized to offer two-year technical training in agriculture and the related fields of forestry and home economics. Specialists in designing personalized lifetime careers are on call to students in the Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics. The following foundation Florunner seed peanut lots were recently stolen from the Georgia Department Commission at Plains. The variety name and lot number were stenciled on each bag. If anyone has any information regarding these seed please notify the Georgia Seed Development Commission or the Georgia Department of Agriculture immediately.

How old does sawdust need to be before it can be used for mulch or mixed with soil and used for rooting purposes? 1 know it must be aged but I do not know how long.
Mrs. A. M., Albany Before sawdust can be used as a source of organic matter or soil amendment, it must be no less than ten years old. Color is not always an indication that it has decomposed or aged. Inquiries should be made to determine as near as possible the exact age.
In a vegetable garden, is it safe to use nitrate of soda on other vegetables as well as corn?
J. G., Forsyth Our Plant Division advises that nitrate of soda is safe for application on any vegetable. It works best on corn and other fast growing plants.

Paper Wasps' Sting Hurts,

Can Be Harmful To Man

One of the major pests in the South and Southeast are paper wasps. Frequen-

tly, they build their nests on the house, especially beneath the eaves, on other

structures around the house, or less commonly on vegetatiorr.

The sting of these paper wasps is a

threat to the well being of man,

sometime resulting in hypersensitive

reactions that can cause death. Bet-

ween 35,000 and 50,000 deaths are

attributed to wasps and other

venomous animals annually, in the

world and as many as 10 million

people suffer the consequences of

envenomization every year.

the best time of the year to control the nesting of paper wasps. Dr. Hermann and Dr. Dirks have studied paper wasps and their behavior for five years in and around the Athens area.
In the spring of the year fertile

female wasps, known as queens, set

out to found their new colonies.

Usually, only queens are left from

the previous year after hibernating in

cracks and crevices of buildings

through the winter.

These queens were mated in the

fall and their prime objective early in

the year is to build a colony. Many

of them fail in their efforts, but many

of the queens succeed.

At this time there may be one to

10 queens on a nest. Their sole con-

cern is to build the nest, made of

sting, springtime is an ideal time to

take control measures for their

eradication in and around your

home. If you wait until the worker

wasps emerge from their nest to con-

trol the colonies you are inviting the

pain of stinging even multiple

stinging.

NESTS SMALL NOW

To investigate the new nests, check

every crack and crevice on the out-

side of your home and other

buildings such as barns. The nests

will be small at this time of year.

Especially check those areas where

people will be going in and out of

Dear Editor:
Everyone from the producer of goods to the retailer is being blamed for the rise in the cost of living. When our federal government passed its program for wage and price controls, very few said anything against it. The American people were misled by the administration into believing the controls would reduce inflation and the cost of living. The price and wage control is nothing new; it was tried during the Korean War and it didn't work then and it wiH not work now.
Inflation is caused by one thing, and one thing only and that's government spending. There is no way to keep prices down when our government is spending more money than it is taking in on taxes. The only way to stop Inflation is to make our government spend our tax dollars at home.
Our Senators and Congressmen know the cause of inflation, but they will not stop it until you (the people) demand it and there is no better time than right now.

RECIPE CONTEST

The 1973 Georgia Farm Bureau Dairy Recipe Contest is underway. Dessert recipes are being featured this year.
Dairy products make deeelicious desserts so try your luck and enter your favorite recipe by May 10.
The winner from each county will compete in one of the ten district cook-offs where a winner from each district will be selected to participate in the state cook-off in Atlanta, Friday, May 25.
The Georgia June Dairy Month Committee will award prizes of $100.00 in dairy products to the contestant winning first place and $50.00 in dairy products to the second place winner.

SAUSAGE CAKE

1 Ib. mild sausage
11/2 cup firmly packed Brown sugar
11/2 cup sugar 2 eggs slightly
beaten
3 cups sifted flour

1 tsp. each: Ginger baking powder, pumpkin pie spice and baking soda
1 cup cold strong coffee
1 cup raisins 1 cup chopped
walnuts

Combine meat and sugars, stir until well blended. Add egg, beat well. Sift flour, ginger, baking powder, pie spice. Stir soda in coffee add flour mixture and coffee, alternating with meat mixture. Beating well after each addition. Pour boiling water over raisins. Let stand 5 minutes. Drain well, dry raisins in towel. Fold raisins and nuts into cake batter. Turn into well greased and floured cake pan (Bundt) Bake 1 1/2 hr. at 350 or until done. Cool 15 minutes in pan before 'turning out.

The wishbone flower or Torenia is one of the most versatile flowering plants known. It can be planted in an indoor pot for yeararound flowers or used outside as a bedding plant. It is a prolific bloomer from June through frost and will grow in either sun or shade. Besides all this, it is easy to grow.
Torenias are natives of tropical Asia and Africa, and derive their name from Olaf Toren who discovered them in China. Although there are numerous varieties only two have become popular. These are Torenia Fournieri and Torenia flava.
The flowers of T. Fournieri are violet, blue and pale mauve; T. flava has yellow flowers with pur ple throats. There is an albino variety of T. Fournieri which is most unusual and rare.
Jn Georgia and other areas of the South, Torenias are especially im portant because they stand heat well, flower for a very long season and are often used as a substitute for pansies. Seeds should be sown in early spring when danger of frost has passed. They prefer a soil rich in peat, loam, leaf mold and sand.
Children especially love torenias since they are easy to grow and most rewarding. The "monkey face" flower is an excellent annual to interest young and old gar deners alike.

Upon finding their nests, many of the common insecticides, especially aerosol sprays with pyrethrums, can be sprayed directly on the nest from a safe distance of about 10 ft. with good results. Gasoline or kerosene also works well but are often messy and unsafe. There is no need to use fire as a cmr<i?.
After the ; -us are controlled the nest usu:>.!i\ never will be used again but it may be a good practice to take the nest down anyway. A roving queen may take up her abode there and you will have to start over again.
SPRING COMPETITION A good point to remember about these wasps is that springtime for them is a time of competitive behavior. This means that new queens may come in periodically during this time of the yea; to start a
cqucntly, it is best to your buildings at weekly intervals until no new nests are found. This period of colony founding may go on throughout April and at least part of May. But if you catch the nests and control them during their initial stages you will make the following summer months much more pleasurable and safer for your family.

Many Materials Good

For Organic Mulching

A variety of materials may be used for mulching. For the organic materials listed, only two to three inches (after settling) is needed. Here are some you
may consider:

Pine Bark - Pine bark is the most recent addition to the list of useful mulching materials. The attractive large size particles called "nuggets" are more effective for weed control than is the finely-ground pine bark since weed seed will germinate in the finely-ground material. Bark does not create a nitrogen deficiency as does sawdust when used as a mulch.
Sawdust One to two inches of sawdust makes an effective mulch that has a neat appearance. A disad-
vantage is that it will rob the soil surface area of nitrogen. This can be overcome by several .light applications of a nitrogen-containing fertilizer during the growing season.
Pine Straw - Pine straw or pine
needles are the most widely used mulch in Georgia. They are excellent materials for this purpose since they are long lasting and do not "mat down" excessively.
Fall Leaves Fall leaves are the most overlooked mulching material in Georgia. They are not as attractive as are some of the other materials; however, they do just as well in retaining soil moisture. To eliminate the "blowing around" problem, place the fall leaves in a pile until late winter. They will then be decomposed enough to be suitable as a mulch.

if nothing else is available. Disadvantages include a fast decomposition rate and the fact that they tend to pack down. It is desirable to place only one to two inches of fresh clippings on the surface at the time, otherwise the material may "heat up" and break down rapidly.
Peanut Hulls - Peanut hulls make an acceptable mulch; however, they are not as attractive as some other, materials. They also may bring in weed seed and nematodes if not treated with methyl bromide or a similar chemical before application.
Wood Chips - For large areas, wood chips make satisfactory mulching material. In addition to being useful around plants, it is good for mulching walks, trails and play areas.
Pecan Shells - Broken bits of pecan shells make an attractive dark brown mulch that is effective in holding soil moisture.
Gravel - Gravel and pebbles are being used more frequently as a mulch. They have the advantage of being permanent, fireproof materials. A disadvantage is the reflected summer heat that can be a problem with plants such as azaleas.
Peat Moss - Peat moss is not the best mulching material since it has a tendency to cake and harden when the surface becomes dry. It has a pleasing appearance, however, when freshly applied.
Straw - Straw from grains, such as wheat, oats or rye can be used as a mulch. It is somewhat unsightly, however, until it settles and may contain seed that will germinate.
Plastic Film - Polyethylene plastic can serve as an effective mulch for long-term weed control, including bermudagrass. It is an unsightly material when used as a mulch; however, this can be overcome by covering the plastic with an attractive material such as pine straw. When placing plastic around shrubs, the drainage should slant toward the stem. Punching small holes every 12 to 24 inches with a pencil or similar instrument will also prove beneficial. Both clear and black plastic may be used. Polyethylene is not suggested in poorly-drained areas since it may cause the soil to hold too much water.
