Peanut Program
Last week a decision to change three phases of the peanut support program came out in Washington, U. S. Department of Agriculture, which I consider to be unjustified, irrational and probably illegal.
The decision was to discontinue the peanut sheller pur-
chase program, to discount $50 a ton any peanuts showing visable signs of aspergillus f I a v u s mold, and that producers would be required to assume the s t orage, handling and inspection costs on peanuts placed under warehouse storage loans. This is, to me, just another attempt of the people in Washington to beat our farmers over the head in order to make them accept new farm legislation that would not be in their best interest and would eventually effect the bountiful supply of food enjoyed by the American consumer. In the first place the timing of the changes in the peanut program is unsound, and is so ill planned that it could wreck Georgia's peanut economy and possibly bankrupt many of our producers. The new regulations effect the 1973 peanut crop which is already being planted in Georgia and has been planted in Texas. This is in effect like changing the rules in the middle of the game. Our peanut handlers and farmers have already made their production and financial plans based on the existing peanut program. The changes in the sheller purchase program and the aspergillus flavus mold support price will certainly hamper financial backing from commerical institutions. The decision to require farmers to pay their own storage, handling and inspection costs on peanuts placed under warehouse storage loans is about the same as a further $15 discount on support prices. I am not at all sure that what U. S. D. A. has done is legal. The peanut support program is the only agricultural commodity program that is established by law, voted on by producers and was passed by the U. S. Congress. If the changes made in the support program this year are not illegal, then they certainly show another example of the present administration circumventing the power of Congress in changing the intent of the Congress. The administration is not unaware of what they are doing as volumes of testimony were presented against any such changes in the program this year by agricultural leaders

Lime Shortage The Gift Of The Honey Bee May Get Worse Belong To Timeless Heritage
Shortages of agricultural lime used by farmers are likely to become even worse unless provisions are made for stockpiling lime in the general area for later use, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
The lime shortages have been caused by a nationwide shortage of rail equipment and increased usage of rail transportation to meet the needs of greater general economic activity.
The problem has been aggravated by the demand for rail transportation to move grain and other agricultural products to ports for shipment to foreign countries, Irvin said..
The use of agricultural lime has about doubled in the past ten years with the present demand at an all time high because of increased plantings of soybeans and allowable planting of feed grains under present national agricultural programs.
There is adequate rail equipment for shipment of lime from manufacturers to dealers in a steady year round flow but not enough equipment to handle the nation's lime shipment needs during just the peak of the lime use season.
"Railway officials, lime manufacturers and distributors feel there is no immediate short range solution to the problem," Irvin said. "The best solution at this time is for dealers, and where practical, farmers, to purchase and stockpile lime during the off season so it will be available when needed."
4-H Contributions
Now Tax Deductible
Private citizens, organizations and business firms may now write off any contribution to 4-H as a tax deduction.
A ruling by the Internal Revenue Service qualifies any donation to 4H Clubs and affiliated organizations as tax exemptible. Formerly only certain types of donations qualified.
Last year, gifts and donations enabled 4-H to award $44,950 in college scholarships. Donations also provided thousands of 4-H members with project awards and expensepaid trips to summer camps, district, state and national 4-H events.
The taste of honey, the smell of wax these gifts of the honey bee belong to
a timeless heritage. Its known beginnings trace to a Spanish rock painting of
Paleolithic times which depicts a honey gatherer climbing to a wild hive while the bees swirl about menacingly. Later people of the Bronze Age used wax in
casting ornaments and weapons.

With the advent of managed apiaries, beehives supplied nations not only with an important part of their food, but also with mead for drink and candles for light.
But of all the good things the honey bee brings to man, none is more important than the gift of pollination, .n visiting flowers over vast acreages of forages and other field crops, fruits, and vegetables, little Apis mellifera, the honeymaker, does a job that neither man nor machine can duplicate.
Some 90 U.S. crops with a total annual value of $6 billion either require or benefit from bee pollution. Alfalfa exemplifies this
dependency. Without pollination by the honey
bee there would be no alfalfa, the forage crop that underpins our dairy and livestock industries.
Pollination suffers, however,
unless the beekeeping industry itself thrives. Accordingly, ARS scientists at seven laboratories conduct basic and applied research on a wide range
of bee topics. In disease research they have

Georgia farmers are urged to conserve the use of Diesel fuel as much as possible. Many farmers have said they are feeling the effects of a national Diesel shortage in that their orders have been delayed or cut.
However, according to a survey of the major oil companies in Atlanta as well as dealers in rural areas, there is no indication of a serious shortage of No. 2 Diesel fuel, the type used in most farm machinery.
In a recent board meeting of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, Commissioner Tommy Irvin and other members of the board called upon Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz to ask President Richard Nixon to establish

made in bee breeding, especially the development of a better way to artifically inseminate queens. Scientists who heretofore were limited to working with only a few lines and generations a year, can now greatly accelerate the breeding and selection of bees.
An outgrowth of this research is a line of bees tailormade to pollinate a specific crop, alfalfa. This is a boon to alfalfa seed growers in regions where other plants compete for the bees' services. Specialized bees will eventually be bred for other im-
portant crops. A few of the other ARS bee
research projects include finding ways of preventing bee losses to

Georgia Grain Program Continues To Run In Deficit
Georgia farmers need to take a serious look at their gran production programs. Grain is the basic ingredient in practically all livestock and poultry feed, and Georgia farmers can't produce enough to meet the growing demands. Even with increased yields, the deficit continues to mount.
Each year more than 100 million
bushels of grain are shipped into the state to maintain livestock and poultry industries. With expanded livestock programs, this deficit will continue to increase.
Approximately two million acres of Georgia's cropland are used each
year for grain production. State average yields are still too
low for economical production. On the average, Georgia farmers

Georgia, according to the report, is the leading hog producing state outside the Corn Belt.
produce barely half of their potential
in grain crops. For example, good corn growers have averaged more than 100 bushels per acre on their entire acreage for a number of years. Some are averaging up to 150 bushels per acre. Success stories are equally common with other grain crops.
But even Georgia's best farmers could add a few more bushels per acre by doing a little better job in some areas of production.
Seventy bushels per acre on corn would be'a realistic goal to shoot for in 1973. This would add 17 bushels

Also known as castor oil and mole bean plant, the beautiful an nual is grown for its handsome foliage during summer months and also as a deterrent in gardens to moles.
This plant is a member of the Ricinus species of the Spurge family. There are many varieties of castor bean ranging from the solid green palmate leaves to the blackish purple leaves and the most unusual red foliage with metallic luster.
The castor oil plant is a native of tropical Africa and is grown primarily for its ornamental value. However, many people plant mole bean plants to rid their gardens of moles. Because the plant itself is very toxic, the root system can kill moles when the animals burrow through the garden chewing their way through any roots that get in their way. The roots, however, con tain their own toxin and do not emit poison to garden vegetables.
The castor oil plant got this com mon name from its importance in the manufacture of the well-known medicine by the same name. The beans or seeds of the plant contain the oil which has brought the plant notoriety.
When this plant is found in the tropics it often reaches a height of 40 feet or more. The castor bean plant, however, can not be planted outdoors in non-tropical climates until all danger of frost has passed.
Seeds are contained within the flower capsule and are sown as soon as the ground is warm and the weather settled. The seeds should be soaked in warm water overnight before planting. If you want to get a jump on summer, you can plant the seeds in separate small pots and transplant them outside as soon as the weather is favorable.
Caution: while the castor bean plant is one of the most beautiful foliage plants, one of the most easily grown and certain to be a focal point in your summer garden, every part of the plant is extremely poisonous and children should be warned to respect it and leave it alone. Although the plant is not poisonous to the touch, if any part of the plant is eaten, especially the seed, severe poisoning will result.

Grain Program
(Continued From Page 1)
per acre over the 1972 crop. The increase would have great impact in livestock production and additional agricultural income. Only 17 more bushels per acre would mean a whopping 30 million bushels of grain over the 1973 yield.
In planning your 1973 grain crop, check the following points: These measures, applied correctly; promise yields well beyond the 17 bu/acre goal.
1. Check soil pH. It should be between 6.2 and 6.5 for good corn growth. If less than 6.0, add lime. Low pH is one of
the most common factors limiting higher corn yields in Georgia. 2. Have your soil tested and apply the recommended amounts of plant nutrients. Check with your county agent for soil testing information. 3. Select well adapted, high yielding hybrids and plant to a uniform stand. 4. Prepare a good seedbed and plant early. Early planting
results in higher yields, shorter plants, stronger stalks, and less disease and insect damage. 5. Control weeds by herbicides and/or cultivation. Check with your county agent for the latest information on weed control in corn. 6. Harvest early before lodging occurs. Harvesting efficiency is
best with grain 25 to 28% moisture. Georgia has never been a large
grain sorghum producing state, but this crop has practically the same nutritive value as corn. Since we now have adapted grain sorghum hybrids, many grain farmers should consider its value as a new grain crop.
In many respects, grain sorghum has some advantages over corn. It can be planted much later than corn which means that it could be doubled cropped with small grain.
Grain sorghum does not have a
critical drought stress period as does corn, and it could be a more dependent grain crop on some of the lighter soils in the state. Since adequate markets have been established, prices should be competitive with corn.
Check these production points for higher yields: (1.) Use a bird resistant adapted hybrid seed; (2.) Plant to a good stand (about 6 Ibs./acre) (3.) Fertilize and lime ac-
cording to soil test; (4.) Control
FLAME PROOF FABRICS NEEDS SPECIAL CARE
If you have children's sleepwear of a fabric which has had a flame retardant finish applied, the following guidelines should be considered in care:
1. Do not use bleach. Chlorine bleach, chemically attacks the flame retardant finish and renders it ineffective.
2. Do not use soap or nonphosphate detergents because they tend to deposit on the fabric surface a new chemical build-up which burns despite flame retardant properties of the underlying fabric.
3. Do not send to a commercial laundry since the strong chemicals often used in these laundries can attack the flame retardant finish.
Chemically-treated polyester and nylon do not have the restrictions indicated above.
weeds and insects; (5.) Harvest early, use a dryer.

Peanut Program
Agricultural Calendar
(Continued From Page 1)
throughout the peanut producing areas.
Peanuts produced about 196 million dollars of farm income in Georgia last year. Some of our 25,000 peanut producers derive as much as 95 percent of their income from this row Crop. In addition, it is estimated that each peanut dollar generates about 3 more .dollars to the economy of our peanut counties.
Financing this crop is always done on a seasonal basis. The changes in the program will so effect the collateral offered by peanut producers and shellers that the entire economy of these farmers and their communities can be wrecked.
I have discussed this matter with agricultural leaders from throughout Georgia and other southern states, including some of our neighboring Commissioners of Agriculture and Senator Herman Talmadge, Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, pledging any possible assistance this office can give in order to have this decision altered.
Diesel Shortage
(Continued From Page 1)
diesel fuel and gasoline to assure the American farmers of enough fuel to meet the needs of increased production in order to adequately supply the nation with foods.
The dealers state that they have been able to take care of their old customers but are not taking on any new buyers. Some farmers may not be getting their full order, the dealers say, but they are not being required to do without fuel.

pesticides, cutting honey production costs through mechanization, and managing bee colonies for better pollination.
Research will foster the well-being of the golden "hive-people," long celebrated in poem and prose for their industry and their remarkably organized society and economy. The welfare of these hard-working insects is of inestimable concern to mankind.
