Gift Of Green
The green leaf governs the economy of nature. Every living creature, with minor exceptions, is utterly dependent upon plants and photosynthesis. Powered by sunlight, the chlorophyll in leaves turns carbon dioxide and water into the sugar that ultimately nourishes all life.
Modern science, with its great discoveries, stands humbled by the awesome food-producing ability of the plant kingdom. Certainly no single chemical reaction is more vital to man than photosynthesis. Every year plants take some 200 billion tons of carbon released by decaying wastes and transform it into plant material, and in the process recharge the biosphere with life-sustaining oxygen. As partakers of these benefits we should always remember that, biologically speaking, we are plant parasites
(Our guest columnist this week is Mr. Russ P. Kaniuka, editor of
AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH, a publication of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, A.R.S., Washington,
D.C. 20250.)
although we have long been cotenants of the earth, plants existed before man and need him not at all. The earthly realities are that man cannot really hold dominion but must live in harmony with the natural world.
Many of our activities adversely affect the well-being of plants. It is a perverse paradox that we damage plant life most where we need it most, around our burgeoning population centers. We can alleviate much of this damage through an awareness of the interdependencies that make up the unity of life and acting accordingly. The building of homes and roads without regard to drainage patterns, for example, can drown nearby plant communities. Once construction is completed, the tramp of feet and the roll of traffic, often on seemingly invulnerable sites, can exact a heavy toll of plant life by compacting the soil, thereby lessening its capacity to harbor water and air. Every winter, tons of salt are spread on streets and highways, polluting the water supply of many plants and eventually killing them because their roots cannot take up salt water.
Even the mundane trappings of modern life do their share of damage. Air conditioners emit strong drafts that can rob cells of their turgidity, thus drying off the plant. And kitchen fans propel cooking fats and oils outdoors where they clog.leaf surfaces and interfere with plant respiration.
Nature's power of renewal heals many abuses. Even so, the quality of human life would gain if we realized that man lives because he is surrounded by plants. We can create harmony between man and nature by practicing the kind of stewardship exemplified by French farmers who live in graceful villages amid ever fertile fields tilled well over 4,000 years. The gift of green can be managed with wisdom and knowledge.

The article describes Atlanta's market as one of the world's largest and one of the country's most interesting. Also described in the article are several of the region's special recipes, adapted for use at home.

The law was first proposed by President George Washington in his first annual address to Congress, which had already recognized that such legislation was vital to the
progress of the nation. Just as both our first and second
Presidents realized that weights and measures play a necessary role in the

has a direct financial interest in seeing that all such transactions are fair to both buyer and seller. It's estimated that the average family of four has a stake of $200 or more per year in W & M enforcement.
Businessmen have even greater reason for making sure that their scales and measuring devices are correct. When large volume of weighing is done, even a small fraction of one percent error can give away thousands and thousands of
dollars worth of products, through repetitive use of the incorrect device.
Scale and measuring devices are widely used in retailing, in manufacturing, in processing and in packaging. For example, most food products from flour to ketchup

"Limber legs" in Jersey calves, a condition in which calves are unable to control their legs, has been found to be inherited.
The first reports of limber legs were made in 1969. Since then, the condition has been reported in several Jersey herds across the country. Both female and male calves are affected.
Affected calves appear normal, but are unable to stand, and their legs can be easily rotated or bent with no visible discomfort to the calf. Normal muscling of the legs is apparently lacking, and the joints are loose. These calves are a complete loss to the dairyman.

Dear Editor: In your February 9th BULLETIN, you had an article
dealing with curing and cooking of ham. One of the best ways to cook cured ham is to cover the
bottom of a skillet with fresh thin bacon and lay the cured ham on top of the bacon and cook until the bacon is done. The bacon will absorb the excess salt from the ham and also pick up flavor from the ham. The bacon is then equal in flavor to the ham. Of course, irish potatoes may also be cooked with ham to take up excess salt.

Among bedding plants, the summer flowering Tuberous Begonia provides the longest-blooming, largest and showiest flowers in the widest color-range of all. What's more, they reach and keep this peak in places where sunlight is often too scarce for ordinary flowers to bloom at all. Begonias are not just a shade plant; they are one of the greatest shade plants of all.
Available in hundreds of different configurations, many of which bear a striking resemblance to other existing flowers, the plant has been called the "King of Imitators".
All of them are a far cry from the original small-flowered South American native Begonia, of the equatorial Andes in Bolivia. First noted by the Spanish conquistadoes, they were first identified in 1690 by a plant hunter named Charles Plumier, who gallantly named them after the then French Governor of San Domingo, Michel Begon, who had helped cut the red tape involved in getting Plumier's expedition underway.
The seeds of the plant are smaller than specks of ground pepper, but only dedicated hybridizers ever start with seeds. It is better to wait a few years and invest in the plant when it is in the "tuber" stage. From this point on, cultivation is easy.
When Begonias, are actively growing, they must be fed regularly with liquid manure or plant food as well as plenty of water. When growth stops, they require a short resting period during which water is reduced and feeding is stopped entirely.
Although Begonias are usually thought of as outside summer plants, they can also be successfully brought into bloom indoors. All they need is good light, humidity, and plenty of water.
Begonias are among the easiest plants for even the novice gardener to cultivate. They will put color in your garden in the summer and beauty in your home during the winter.
Electronic Calls
Banned In Ga.
The State Game and Fish Commission passed a statewide regulation in its meeting January 27, making it illegal to use recorded or electronic calls for fox hunting.
Electronic and recorded calls are illegal for use in hunting any game species. They may be used for hunting crows. The regulation becomes effective 30 days after being posted.
There is no closed season or bag limit for hunting foxes.

Can you tell me how to tell the difference between male and female guineas? When do they lay?
B. T., Omaha

The poultry people told us that guineas lay their eggs in the spring for a

very short period. The only difference between the male and female

birds is the male bird has a larger cone or gill and is a fraction larger

than the female.

Lately most of the milk I get tastes like it is watered down. I sent you the names of the dairies in my area. Can you check and see if they are watering down the milk?
M. A., Cordele
Samples are collected and tests run in the Department of Agriculture's laboratories monthly. The minimum butterfat allowed in Georgia is 3.25% and all the named processors have 3.25% or better in their milk. However, we do appreciate your letter and our inspectors will collect samples in your area again in the near future for testing.

When is the best time of year to cut pine trees for making log buildings? Any information on curing and treating them would be appreciated.
J. R., Blue Ridge
The Forestry Commission advises that the best time of year for cutting trees for log buildings would be in the winter months. This is when the sap content is not running and trees can be handled easier. They may even be somewhat lighter in weight. There are several preservative chemicals available on the market for a farmer to obtain in small quantities. Mr. Paul Butts, Utilization Forester, Macon, is sending you additional information on preserving, rings per inch, cutting time, seasoning, etc. that you might need. There is also a pamphlet put out by the University of Alaska on "Building A Log House", available at 2 cents per copy. That address is College, Alaska 99701.

My brood sows are eating live chickens. I want to keep the hogs but they have got to stop eating my chickens. What causes this and what can I do?
C. S., Metter The Vet division advises that your problem probably starts from a mineral or protein deficiency. Over the years it becomes a vicious habit and is hard to stop. You might try some tankage. Give this to them free choice and see if it will break them from eating your chickens. The only other suggestion is to dispose of these sows, get more and be sure they have ample animal protein supplement in their rations.
***
My class is studying germination and I need to know the length of time these seed will keep before planting: corn, flower, lettuce, mustard, apple, pear, plum, and apricot seed.
C. S., Trion Mr. Elmo Winstead, State Seed Analyst, gave this information: corn, three years; flower, one to three years, depending on the kind of seed; lettuce, not more than one year due to their short shelf life unless stored in hermetically sealed containers; mustard, three to four years; apple, pear, plum and apricot, not very well for more than one year in most cases unless under controlled conditions. He advises that it is impossible to give the life span for seed unless you relate to specific storage conditions such as temperature and moisture.

Gardening
(Continued From Page 1)
other mimosa relatives do not react as dramatically to touch, but seem to actually go to sleep when the sun sets or retreats behind a dark cloud. With much slower motion, the leaves close tightly together and re-
open with the return of the sun. As children mature and pass
through the ages in which they are interested in such subjects as history, archaeology, dinosaurs, and the like, it may no longer be necessary to acquaint them with gardening through exposure to sensational plants. Instead, stories about the plants of the Bible, those on which prehistoric reptiles grazed, and those from which the drugs doctors use come from may stimulate more interest and, at the same time, further a child's appetite for scientific knowledge.
Even the most feminine of little girls will often learn to appreciate the garden herbs which accent their mothers' cooking and the flowers which add so much to a table setting or coffee table.
