Reaching Out
To All Homemakers
"LIVING" that's what it's all about. It's 24 hours a day, especially for homemakers. And homemakers want the best that life has to offer for themselves and their families!!!
They face homemaking decisions every minute of the day: What to
buy? How to get the most for their money? How to take care of the kids? How to do everything they do when there isn't enough time? They want to be more beautiful, too. And smarter. They want to look beyond their four walls to know more about their community, nation, and world. We've got help for Georgia homemakers - FREE for the asking in our new COME ALIVE PROGRAM for homemakers. Yes, Georgia Extension Homemakers Council has a new image; and, literally, we are reaching out to all homemakers. January, 1970, Georgia Extension Homemaker Clubs reached an

all-time low in membership. This was due to a number of reasons. Regardless of the reason, we knew we had to find a way to put new life in the program or let it fold up completely. So the Extension staff and the executive board, backed by the entire membership of homemaker clubs, decided to do something about the problem we were faced with. Georgia's Extension Homemakers Clubs are now making a dramatic comeback. Enrollment has increased by more than 38% in one year. We have four program of work areas, with very good participation statewide.
Safety, Health, Citizenship, and Cultural Arts are all organized with capable and conscientious leaders. Even though our program of work was well organized and great things were happening all over the state, we felt we were not reaching enough homemakers. The consensus was that we needed statewide emphasis based on informing the homemaker what our organization had that she needed to help her "come alive."
We realized what a tremendous task we had undertaken. It was one that could not be completed in a year, or even two or three. We have had excellent assistance from homemaker club members and leaders, county, district, and state Extension staff, as well as television, radio, and newspaper publicity. We have a new and more up-to-date name: GEORGIA EXTENSION HOMEMAKERS. New by-laws have been written and new guidelines

'" Our younger calves are eating newspaper after eating hay. Is there some

deficiency?

J. L., Dublin

Our Vet division advises that there is a good possibility of a

deficiency or maybe you are not feeding them enough hay. Try in-

creasing the amount of hay fed until they are getting all they are able to

consume.

***

Is it possible to get rid of sparrows by the hundreds in the barnyards,

buildings, and adjacent trees?

R. B., Poulan

The Game and Fish Commission advises that it is almost impossible to

get rid of sparrows on a large scale. However, they recommend a

solution of amonia and water, (half and half) sprayed on their roosting

sites just at dark (dusk). This proves effective as a repellent for both

sparrows and starlings.

I have purchased three cacti and need information on the care. D. B., Smyrna
Plant in regular potting soil and allow the soil to dry naturally bet-
ween waterings. Grow the plants in full sunlight with moderate tem-
perature and low humidity. ***

My long-haired calves are losing their hair. Can you give a remedy?

T. W., Albany

Our Vet division advises that you should have your local vet examine

these calves for a possible mineral or vitamin deficiency as well as for

evidence of lice or mites. Your veterinarian is the most qualified person

to help you arrive at a proper diagnosis and treatment for this condition

in these animals.

Tree fertilization is a step that may help pecan trees reach top production and may even bring some trees back into production.
Apply fertilizers to the soils underneath pecan trees about six weeks before the trees bud and leaf out. t
Since the trees will start budding and leafing out about the first of April, they should be fertilized in February, say University of Georgia horticulturists. Contact your county Extension agent for the latest fertilizer recommendations.
Home EC Leader
Retires In Feb.
Martha H. Jones, state home economics leader with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, was honored at a retirement luncheon marking 30 years of distinguished service in Extension work.
Mrs. Jones became state home economics leader in 1969 and retires from that position.
As she retires, Mrs. Jones leaves behind many significant contributions to Georgians and the Cooperative Extension Service.

Enclosed is some sort of scale which keeps stopping up the drain on my washing machine. Where is it coming from and is it harmful?
B. F., Rocky Face The sample you sent was analyzed in the Water Supply Laboratory of the Public Health Department. The material is calcium carbonate which is a natural product in water coming from a lime"stone formation. The scale is harmless. Other than placing a water softner prior to your hot water heater, the only suggestion is to flush your hot water heater at intervals. The scale is coming from the water as it is heated and tends to pop off the interior of the heater. From there goes into the hot water line where it plugs the drain. By opening the drain on your hot water heater, you may be able to flush out any loose material and prevent it from stop-
ping up the strainer on your washing machine.

We Get Letters

Dear Editor: We would like to tell you about our community project
that has solved a problem for our old folks, especially those that can't work but are still able to do craft.
We talked it over with our friends and neighbors and decided to build a community handmade gift shop that was for the purpose of using the talents of the people in our vicinity. These people bring their crafts to the store on consignment and we in turn mail them a check when their items are sold. By them lowering their prices a little and us raising ours a little, we have been able to sell their crafts.
Fannin County officials have been so wonderful to us. They have encouraged us and helped in every way possible. By tourist season, we hope to have a beautiful community store. We hope this plan will be of benefit to other communities as it has been to ours.
Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Spencer Spencer's Stop Route 1, Box 171 Morganton, Ga. 30560

(Editor's note: This sounds like a fine community project and, of course, the MARKET BULLETIN is always happy to help individuals sell their handmade items which are usable in the farm and home.)
Dear Editor: I would like to know how to prepare beef tripe from time
of butchering all the way to cooking. We are familiar with the canned tripe, but would like to try some fresh.
Mr. D. F. Perkins 1025 Pecan Avenue Clarkston, Ga. 30021

(Editor's note: We have asked your county home economist to send you the detailed instructions on this process. Also we have a recipe for cooked tripe in our "Recipes" column this week.)

Dear Editor: Could you please tell me how the southern cornmeal
"hoe-cake" got it's name? Mr. Clyde Thompson Route 1 Dublin, Georgia

(Editor's note: Hoecake is the cornmeal cake of the early American settlers, which often served as bread. The cooking facilities of colonial households were generally primitive, and ovens, even when existing, could not be heated easily. The inventive settlers baked a cornmeal and water mixture on the blades of their hoes on hot coals in front of a wood fire and called them "hoecakes".)

COOKED TRIPE
For 2 pounds of fresh honeycomb tripe, trim if necessary, wash it thoroughly, soaking overnight, and blanch it for a half hour in salted water. Wash well again, drain and cut for cooking. When cooked, the texture of tripe should be like that of soft gristle. Cut it into 1 1/2 to 2 inch squares. Have ready a heavy pot that you can lid tightly later. Add the following ingredients to the cooking utensil:
Enough water to cover 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon sugar 1 clove garlic 2/3 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped mixed celery and parsley 4 peppercorns Bring to boil and add the tripe. Reduce the heat at once. Seal the lid with a strip of pastry or tape and simmer for 12 hours. When the tripe is tender, you may serve it with pan gravy seasoned with salt, 1/2 teaspoon mustard and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce.

A descendant of the largest and most spectacular vine in ancient China, Wisteria is one of the few plants that can be trained as a vine or as a tree.
As a vine, it grows very luxurious and quickly. Long-established specimens have produced trunks as much as a foot thick, and have covered the sides of two-story buildings with royal purple.
Pruned back consistently when young, however, Wisteria becomes a free-standing tree, up to ten feet high, with a broad and graceful silhouette.
Either way, Wisteria produces hundreds of long, loosely clustered blooms which are in full color in late May, at the same time or even before the leaves unfold.
These plants are probably the most desirable of all hardy woody vines and are not difficult to transplant. However, it is quite common for them to be without flowers for the first few years unless certain precautions are taken. Before planting your vine, dig out about a barrelful of dirt and replace it with rich garden loam, about 1/3 of which is well-rotted manure. Be sure that your Wisteria gets plenty of water during trie first growing season and that its roots are not injured while planting.
It is most popular in the South. However the "Queen of Vines" is very hardy and will do well anywhere that the minimum temperature remains no less than 10 degrees below zero.

Review Policies Now For Farm Insurance
Farm insurance policies should be carefully reviewed at least once a year to bring protection up to date.
Make sure any new equipment or buildings are covered by your present fire insurance policy, and know what you would collect in case of fire loss.
Extension farm management specialists say a good insurance program should also include adequate liability insurance that would cover any injuries on the farm, auto insurance and life insurance.

Damaged Heinz Products

130,000 Pounds Of Food Dumped By Department

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin Tuesday sharply reprimanded

local representatives of the H. J. Heinz food company and the management of

an Atlanta warehousing firm for selling an assortment of Heinz food products

that "threatened the health and welfare of the public."

In a letter to Jay R. Burns,

Earthworms Aid Atlanta Distribution Center
Manager of H. J. Heinz Co. and R.

Georgia Farmers L. Graham, Manager of the Atlanta
Distribution Center, Irvin said it

was inconceivable to him that a company as large and respected as

Earthworms may provide Georgia dairymen with a sufficient means of

Heinz would allow its representatives or its affiliate representatives to attempt to pawn off such products on an unsuspecting public.
In his letter Irvin called attention to the fact that the Georgia Department of Agriculture bears responsibility for the quality and purity of food sold in Georgia and cautioned that he would use the power of his office "in every conceivable way" to exact severe penalties should either of the two firms attempt to sell unsalvagable or contaminated food products in the future.
In further action Irvin instructed the Consumer Protection Division of the Georgia Department of
Agriculture to carefully appraise all sections of the Georgia Food Act
concerning salvagable food.

disposing of cow wastes. University of Georgia dairy scien-
tists began 20 beds of worms and placed them outside in a shaded area, unenclosed. A three-inch base of cotton molts was placed at the bottom of each bed, then a layer of worms was added, and three inches of cow waste filled out the top.
The worms ate completely through the layer of waste in three to four days. New waste was
deposited about twice a week to keep the top layer even.
The obvious benefit of this
method is that dairymen have an inexpensive way of disposing of wastes. It also saves the time and expense of hauling the wastes to a field.
Another benefit is that the worms
