Veterinary Medicine
Safeguards Public
Have you ever stopped to consider why veterinary medicine has been able to make the contributions that it has made to society and also has been able to enjoy the position of trust and respect that the profession has? I believe there are two primary reasons.
The first reason is that the veterinarian is a learned per-
son. In addition to his regular college education, he has receeved an , additional four syears of proifessional ediucation. The 'veterinarian has been and continues to be the most broadly trained and analytical biomedical scientist present in society. The second reason is that
(Our guest columnist this week is Richard B. Talbot, Dean, University of Georgia, School of Veterinary Medicine, Athens 30601.)
the veterinarian must be not only learned but he must also be ethical in his use of knowledge.
The veterinarian is religiously guided by a code of ethics that he honestly believes in and, therefore, is able to apply. As a scientist the veterinarian has been able to deliver and as a professional he has been worthy of the public trust.
Most citizens understand the significance of a scientific education and the fact that a professional must be a learned person. Many, however, are unaware of the high principles of veterinary medical ethics.
Briefly stated, the veterinary medical code of ethics is the foundation of the profession's individual and collective efforts. The entire code can be summarized very briefly by stating that it is based on the Golden Rule.
The code as described in the 1970 revised edition of the Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics includes six general sections which provide simple, understandable, ethical principals such as the following.
"The principle objectives of the veterinary profession are to render service to society, to conserve our livestock resources, and to relieve suffering of animals."
"A veterinarian may choose whom he will serve. Once he has undertaken care of a patient he must not neglect him. In an emergency, however, he should render service to the best of his ability. He should not solicit clients."
"A veterinarian should not employ his professional knowledge and attainment nor dispose of his services under terms and conditions which tend to interfere with the free

Increase In Acres Planted To Cotton
There will be a definite increase in the acres planted to cotton in Georgia in 1972.
In years past many of Georgia's allotted acres have gone unplanted. Even acres which had been released to ASCS went unclaimed. This year is a different story.
Growers from cotton growing areas are buying and leasing allotments from those counties which do not plant all of their allotments. Already many counties have transferred to other counties all of the acres they do not intent to plant.
Good yields and higher prices in 1971 have stimulated this activity. Currently, a farmer with a base yield of 500 pounds per acre will get a price of approximately 45 cents per pound or better on his price supported cotton.
According to the latest Georgia Farm Report the estimated yield is 449 pounds per acre. With the current supply of cotton short of the needs of the industry, prices should remain favorable in 1972. Those farmers equipped to grow cotton are increasing acreage to take advantage of this situation.
The chance of increasing Georgia's farm income is greater with cotton than with any other crop. Where peanut and tobacco allotments have been fully planted,

Can you tell me where I can get plastic Purple Martin gourd houses?
Mrs. A. C. Newnan Mrs. Catherine Day, P. O. Box 3973, Hill Station, Augusta 30904, has these gourds for sale.

We have a raccoon we captured in the woods. Is there a law that prohibits keeping raccoons as pets?
H. S., Dallas The Game and Fish Commission advises that it is unlawful to keep raccoons in captivity unless a permit is obtained from their office. However, at this time they are not issuing any permits since public health officials advise that raccoons are carriers of rabies. Usually a vaccination will n t prevent their carrying this disease.

I have a pecan tree that hasn't had any nuts in several years. Can you tell me someone who will buy this tree to make furniture?
Mrs. J. M., Wrightsville The Forestry Commission mailed you a pamphlet, "Wood Using Industries," that may help you locate a buyer for your tree. However, may we suggest that you first contact your county agent for assistance in making your tree bear again. He can suggest a spray or fertilizer that will help. If you cannot use the tree and cannot sell it for furniture, maybe some local barbecue house would like to buy it for cooking barbecue.

Consumers Assured Quality By Georgia's Egg Industry

If you're a buyer for a volume feeding institution or for a family of four, do

you have a problem always getting the quality you want in certain foods?

Today, very few housewives have this problem with eggs and for good reason.

If you purchase eggs in a retail outlet, you can rest assured they are fresh,

wholesome, and top quality.

$170,000,000

Eggs are candled to determine grade. Candling is the process of holding an egg, mechanically or by hand, in front of a strong light that penetrates the shell and membrane and shows the interior content of the egg.
In Grade AA (or Fresh Fancy), the egg covers a small area, the white is thick and stands high, and the yolk is firm and high.
Georgia Producers Part Of USDA Survey
The U. S. Department of Agriculture will conduct a survey of farmers' production expenditure patterns in Georgia starting in February. The survey will use a scientifically selected sample of farmers to represent the total farm sector of the country.
In Georgia, producers in 13 counties will be asked to cooperate by supplying interviewers with farm production expense data for 1971. The counties to be included in the Georgia Survey are Chattooga, Hall, Madison, Jasper, Jones, Rockdale, Newton, Dougherty, Baker, Macon, Schley. Thomas and Tattnall. There will be 10,000 interviews in 396 counties nationally.
The survey will indicate current buying patterns of American farmers. It will show the types and amounts of goods and services farmers buy to produce their crop and livestock products.
No survey of this type has been conducted since 1955. Producers purchasing patterns have changed a great deal in the intervening 16 years.

Several years ago, Georgia upgraded its egg marketing law. There have been two important results of this action: Georgia went from 23rd in the nation to second in the production and exporting of eggs. Today the egg production industry brings $170,000,000 into Georgia's economy.
Secondly, and of importance to the cook, every egg sold in Georgia must bear, on the carton or case, the producers name and address, the date the eggs were packed and the grade and size.
Candling for Grade The grade of an egg is determined by a process called candling. Every commercial egg producer in Georgia must pass an examination on candling and be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Every egg sold in Georgia must be candled to insure proper interior and exterior quality and graded. In addition, the Georgia Department of Agriculture checks all retail outlets and producer operations for sanitation and refrigeration.
6,000 to 8,000 Holes An egg shell is full of little holes, 6,000 to 8,000 of them. If it were not for the inner membrane, the egg white and yolk would run out of these little openings. Therefore, it is not the shell that protects your egg, but the inner lining. There are two important factors that affect the quality and taste of an egg. Inspectors check carefully on these two points, but often the housewife is not aware of their importance or forgets and destroys the quality of the eggs she has purchased after she gets them home.
Tips to Housewife These two factors are refrigeration and odor. An egg kept without proper refrigeration for three days will drop from "A" quality to "C" quality. The housewife should remember, do not leave your egg carton out of the refrigerator while cooking breakfast or baking a cake. Get the eggs you need and return the carton to the refrigerator immediately. The

In Grade A eggs, the egg covers a moderate area, the white is reasonably thick, stands fairly high and the yolk is firm and high.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
THE AGRICULTURAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF THE UNIVERSITY
OF GEORGIA, INC.
District Meetings

Disregarding its exotic appearance, its politically minded 18th century discovers named this tropical plant Strelitzia regina - in honor of the Queen Charlotte Sophia of England, wife of George III. A German, her maiden name was Mecklenburg-Strelitz. But anybody with half an eye has since rarely referred to the plant by anything other than its most common name, Bird of Paradise.
No other name fits it as well. The strange blossoms, with orange sepals and blue-tinged petals rising up from a beak-shaped pod, immediately remind the viewer of some mysterious feathered creature from a far-away land perhaps even the mythical Phoenix. Commercial growers refer to them simply as "Birds".
Exposed to the sun in rich moist soil, the plant produces no true central stem, but rather a number of stiff, foot-long leaves growing on stalks up to five feet high, topped with blooms like that of no other plant in the world.
Relatively disease-resistant and immensely decorative for years, the "Bird's" unusually long-lasting flowers hold their form well. In the South they are in wide cultivation, grown in greenhouses and outdoors. They can survive outside if the temperature does not drop below 50 degrees.
For all their fantastic appearance, they are not difficult to raise as house plants. All they need is a warm, humid atmosphere, plenty of water, and as much sunshine as they can get. If you plan to grow these tropical beauties indoors, see that they are in a room where the winter temperature is 55 degrees to 65 degrees. In the summer, their temperature tolerance is between 65 degrees and 90 degrees.
The soil mixture needed by "Birds" is 2 parts sharp sand, 2 parts loam, 2 parts leaf mold or humus, 1/2 part dried cow manure and a five-inch pot full of bone meal to each bushel of the mixture.
Birds of Paradise last for years, getting progressively busier, bushier, and more floriferous.
Handclasp
Don't mourn the passing of time; Love the years! They bring age ... yes ... They also bring wisdom, Love, consideration, kindness. They bring a greater understanding; The handclasp is warmer, Thy labor more sincere.
Mrs. Otis Sims Route 1 Dacula, Georgia 30211

Egg Industry
(Continued From Page 1)
eggs will not spoil this quickly of course, but the thick inner white and the yolk consistency will break down and possibly make the egg runny.
The second factor is odor. Remember those little holes in your egg will quickly absorb odors from your home or refrigerator such as onion, oranges, stale celery and lettuce or ammonia. Never store your eggs near an odoriferous food and remove them while cleaning with strong compounds.

exercise of his judgment and skill or tend to cause a deterioration of the quality of veterinary service."
"The veterinary profession should safeguard the public and itself against veterinarians deficient in moral character or professional competence. The veterinarian should uphold all the laws, uphold the honor and dignity of the profession, and accept its selfimposed discipline."
"The responsibilities of the veterinary profession extend not only to the patient 'but also to society. The health of the community as well as the patients deserves his interest and participation in non-professional activities and organizations."

Cotton Increase
(Continued From Page 1)
Georgia could have planted approximately 100,000 more acres of price supported cotton in 1971. While it is possibly too much to expect that all of this available acreage will be planted in 1972, present indications are that a high percentage will be.
Where Georgia planted 420,000 acres of cotton in 1971, it is not unreasonable to think that 500,000 acres will be planted in 1972. Should this be done Georgia could increase its income from cotton from $80,000,000 in 1971 (in-
cluding price support payments) to $120,000,000 in 1972.
Since cotton is going into the hands of farmers with the equipment and the "know-how", yields per acre may be expected to increase. Under average conditions most farmers can average a bale per acre if they follow the recommendations for producing cotton. Too many farmers and too many counties are exceeding this to doubt that it can be done.
Several months ago the Commodity Commission for Cotton adopted as its slogan "a half million bales on a half million Georgia acres". Present indications are that this goal can be approached.
Holders of allotments who do not intend to plant should lease or sell their allotments for income or release in order to protect their farm history. Closing date on transfers is
March 17.

Ga. Farms Decline
The number of farms operating in Georgia in 1972 is estimated at 75,000 by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. The total is 1,000 fewer than 1971 and continues to trend downward.
